Stardate: 2445.10.29

(USS Illuminar – Bridge – COps Lieutenant Dieter Gregory – 1000)

Standing watch when on station around a planet was like watching paint 
dry.Sure, he understood that not every day was going to be as exciting 
as it could be. In fact, after the efforts on the Sharlayan ship and 
Operation New Hope, some downtime was good.

So, sitting on the command chair, he was busy catching up on 
work.Reviewing the final reports for what was done support the 
Sharlayan.He also had sent his recommendation that now Ensign Oda Berr 
be admitted to the MIT accelerated program, sending the work he had done 
for the reactor redesign.His former advisor would get the paper, and 
with all expectations, Berr would be on his way to a degree.He expected 
great things out of that man.

Crewman Beaumont came up to him.Gregory looked at the young man. “First 
cruise Crewman?” he asked.

“Yes… Yes Sir.”He replied.

“It’ll get better.Once you get used to the hustle and bustle.What do you 
have there.”

Beaumont handed over a PADD.“CPO Ywan asked me to do a sight inventory 
of our self-sealing stembolts and the left-handed arc welder.However, I 
can’t find any of them, Sir.”

Gregory chucked to himself. A little hazing of the new kid on the 
crew.“Very good Crewman. Please report to CPO Ywan, with my complements 
and ask her to show you where they are.”

Beaumont snapped to attention, dropping the PADD in the process.“Aye, 
Aye sir,” he said.

“Don’t forget the PADD, crewman, its not like they grow on tree’s.”

Gregory watched the nervous young man take his leave.

Toggling the recorder, “Personal Log, Stardate 2445.10.29. Chief of 
operations and 3^rd officer Lieutenant Gregory recording.We remain 
stationed around Vulcan while the Captain and CMO are assisting one of 
the crew get necessary medical treatment.We are cycling crew down to 
Vulcan for some needed shore leave.The Sharlayan operation was an all 
hands-on deck, and the crew has earned some downtime.On a personal note, 
I would have preferred Mars, but that is for another time.”

“We have been taking on new crew and cadets to fill billets as current 
members rotate off.Operations will be swamped with three new cadets.I 
will be having them shadow Ensigns Chifukukku and McFry initially.I hope 
to have one on one meetings with them in the next few days to assess 
their qualities, and how best to use them.”

“I remain trepidations as the Captain as promised there is a simulation, 
he wants to run me through.He is a creative genius, and I only hope to 
rise to his level when it comes to command.In the meantime, I will have 
to book some holodedeck time to visit my little green mentor for advice 
and discussion.End personal log.”

“Sir, incoming transmission from Mars,” Ensign Kud called out.

“Put it onscreen.”
