(USS Illuminar —Deck 14, Brig — ACONN Ensign Alexander Dyson — 1303)

 

“Please,Temas,” Laredo began. “Even though I have a doctorate in InterspeciesPsychology, I also have one in Intergalactic Law, so when someone calls medoctor I’m never sure which one is being referenced.” ~Makes senseto me.~  

 

“However, I’mcurious why it is that you seem to feel the constant need to supply people withyour resume of traumatic experiences?  It’s almost as though you havesomething to prove.  Whether it’s to others or to yourself.”

 

“I’m thirty-six, I’ve reached the ‘exercise your demons’ stage of mylife. And that involves listening them.” He said, taking another bite of themeal. “Between the orphanage and the things I’ve seen out there, I’m afraid thelist is long.”

Alex scratched his beard. “Temas, I left Mars at age twenty-one. I haven’tbeen around the block once, or twice. I was on my third, heading towards myfourth. After fifteen years, I needed something different. The longest I hadbeen aboard a single starship was just over three years. Starfleet provided away to settle, while still seeing the galaxy.” He paused. “That and I felt I hadlearned all I could learn in the civilian “field”…” He used his fingers to makequotation marks. “…so to speak.”

“I’m not going to lie, I’m still getting used to being part of a Fleet.The ships I served on operated alone. We had to survive alone, depend on ourselves.It was do or die. And do it by yourself.” He scratched his beard again. “Iguess I might be stuck in that mindset.”
