Mission: Prelude
Day: 1
Stardate: 2446.03.23
(USS Illuminar- Deck 2, Office - FSXO, Lieutenant Tempest Grey Wolf – 1138)
Tempest raised the mug and took a sip as Montero spoke.
"If I may remind you, Ma'am, of the words of General Dwight Eisenhower who
once said, 'Plans are useless, but planning is
everything.' Unfortunately we didn't have a good planning session, perhaps
part of your plan for this exercise. The objective
was to beat a superior force, which we did. Mission accomplished."
"As for the particulars, there was some minor instrument trouble, that was
sorted out. My role was to fly circles around the opfor while Snoopy and
the kid took the opportunist shots. In fact, the kid got one and a half
kills, damned good for his first time in the MK III. When we lost him, it
was still controlled chaos. It wasn't till Deuce hit below
the belt that it went to the free-for-all. I got him in position and
Snoopy got the shot, we'd of had Snake Eyes too, except for that little
thing of an explosion."
He looked at the others."I miss anything?"
"I agree with Raid that Dyson did a great job, considering his
inexperience," Corday added. "But I believe that putting him in that
situation was inevitably going to turn this fight into a "free-for-all", as
you put it. Six Bravo Squad fighters against the three of us would have
been a tough fight with three experienced fighters. Two fighters and a
rookie... it was as if you expected us to lose. What was the fatal flaw?"
He gave Dyson a look. "Sorry Alex, but you were the flaw in our strategy.
It was great that you got the kill, and that you helped with the other
fighter, but the truth was, once my distraction from protecting you was
gone Vic and I were free to fight the way we knew how."
"You are a good pilot, Alex. Don't throw that away because you were put in
a position that you never should have been at this stage of your training.
You don't trust the ship. You don't understand the tech. There was no way
you could have survived this fight."
Then he turned back to Tempest, "You were originally going to be Knight 3.
What would have been your plan?"
She gave him a slight quirk of her mouth that might have been a half-smile.
Dyson had kept his mouth shut and let the more experienced pilots speak
which showed he had good sense.
"That was the whole reason we do these debriefs Corday, so that all can
learn from their successes, and their failures."
He eyes swept over Alex Dyson. "It isn't about how well or how badly you
did but how you worked as a unit." Her attention returned to Corday.
"The only thing I would have done differently is kept my attention on those
two pilots, you don't know them like I do. I trained Deuce and he trained
Snake Eyes so I know what they are capable of. The rest are decent pilots,
their kind are all over the fleet. They will do a good job, use solid
tactics and get splashed after they do some damage. They are ...
predictable...." She let the word hang in the air. "It's the ones who are
unpredictable ... like you two, Corday, Montero who can turn a battle."
She turned her attention fully on Dyson this time.
"This exercise was for you Ensign, did I hang you out to dry? Yes I did.
Did it hurt your pride that you got taken down because you weren't ready?
Certainly. Those holodeck simulations will only take you so far, mock-up
ace or not. You need to get all of the experience you can flying with
someone who can show you not only how to take on others but survive by
working together, even when it all goes to hell."
(Reply: Dyson iyw)
"So you can run off to some other post if you want or you can tough it out
here and find your potential ... and live up to it. Will you get some
ribbing? Jokes at your expense? Sure you will but you will find that
everywhere and if you can't take it then you will wash out of the fleet.
You've got too much potential Alex, I'd rather see you rise to it."
Her mug clapped down on the desktop as she looked over all three.
"As for your win, just be glad you weren't in a Mako."
(Reply: Any)
She snorted. "When Deuce and Snake Eyes dove into the sortie and started
lighting up two of you I expected an early exit, it's why Deuce was so
wroth after he got splashed, he knew he had f..... up. Had this group been
in Makos it would have been 5v1." Her eyes narrowed as she leaned back.
"Those hits would have taken down a Mako, it's what they are used to flying
and flying against. You can bet Deuce learned a lesson today and he won't
repeat the mistake. The Void/Sphinx is a tougher craft with better
shielding so you can thank your fighters for the win. Next time keep your
eyes open and your head on a swivel."
(Reply: Any)
