Mission:  Death in the Shadows

Day: 9

Stardate:2446.02.09

(USS Illuminar- Deck 8 - Science Lab 2 - Science Officers  - Dr. Julian
Penn and Dr. Teller - 1357)

Word of the Captain’s abduction with other Vulcan crewmen went through
the ship quickly.  Although Penn and Teller had no real emotional
attachment to the Captain, the scattering field that was preventing them
from getting anything or anyone to and from the planet did pique the
interest of the scientists.  But this was really more Teller’s field of
study than Penn’s.

Teller pulled up the data coming in from the ship's scanners.  On one
screen, he put a display of the planet and the standard atmospheric layers.

A second screen focused on the D and E layers.  “Bob Ross in front of
the easel,” he said as he adjusted the view.  As he did, different
colors began to play over the screen.

As he observed the pattern, he began writing down mathematical equations
that started popping up on a third screen.  He pointed to one,
“Apple-Haken color the map.”

More equations started to appear.  “Lorenz’s butterfly,” he said excitedly.

Penn went to the screen and circled a portion of the formula and made a
few adjustments, “Doppler dropping a rock. Marconi from Cornwall to
Newfoundland.  Bruce Banner to the Hulk.”

Teller looked at the formula and Penn’s adjustments.  “Dirac’s sea.
Schrodinger's wave,” and the equation changed again.  A few more
keystrokes and the pattern on the second screen began to change again.

Watching as the readouts began to fill a fourth screen.  The image of
numbers rolling down the screen appeared. Slowly the numbers started to
separate into distinctive columns.

“Look,” Penn pointed to the screen, “Moses at the Red Sea.  Donald Trump
at the convention.”

Teller nodded.  “Fermi offers a wager?”  Teller quickly started typing
some more mathematical equations.

Penn watched as the numbers came together to create a mental image and
he saw what his partner was up to.  He went to the second screen,
circled an unknown quantity in the particle collision equation to
produce a quantity of quarks to make the equation real, then he began
his own series of equations.  Suddenly a beep came from the fourth
monitor and he went back to the screen.

“Sokath, his eyes are opened!” he exclaimed with a smile.  “Roger with
Jessica.”

The Tamarian let out a belly laugh, “Archimedes in the bathtub.”

Penn tapped his comm badge, “Penn to bridge, we have a little trick we’d
like to show you?”
