Mission: Space was cool before it mattered
Day: 1
Stardate: 2446.04.25

(USS Exeter -Observation Lounge - CO, Captain Trip Williams, MCO/3O
Lt.Colonel Tyrek Na’Rel - 1840)

“Nevris, are you up for this?”

Tyrek raised a brow at the captain's mention of his true name. At that
moment it felt like it wasn't a captain asking him, but a fellow officer.
" Yes, I've had to deal with much worse during an undercover assignment.
Nothing like being undercover for a year and thinking every minute of
everyday could be your last. The things I had to do to maintain my cover.
Let's just say a group of tactically proficient individuals will be one of
the more welcomed challenges in my life, Captain Williams. "

“I dunno man. It’s gonna be nuts. And the thing is, while you and Ravok and
Keira were met with open arms, I’m afraid what folks might think with
highly trained Romulan soldiers on board.”

" Well if it brings anyone comfort, I'm going to personally vet the
individuals coming aboard. I have several reliable points of contact in the
republic and you have my word if anything comes back as questionable a full
inquiry will be had. The benefits of having a father in the senate." Tyrek
replied.

Trip smiled. “I Think Starfleet probably vetted them before they were
commissioned. They would have needed a captain’s endorsement.”

" I do see your point though. It is risky but these individuals are no more
trained than I am. The only difference is these individuals will wear their
capabilities on their sleeve and I'm more discreet, plus it's bad manners ,
Captain."

“Yeah, well be careful. A discreet Romulan is more dangerous than one who
wears everything on their sleeves.”

" No more dangerous than a Terran with ambition, unconquerable and
unstoppable. " He smiled.
" I'm glad that those days are over."

“But seriously, if you want, I can take this up the ladder and get the
order rescinded in time. File something with the JAG corp or something.”

Tyrek shook his head, dismissing the captain's offer.
" No captain, I think this will bode well for both of us. It will add
another step to my journey and will add another mark to yours. I'm sure one
day your name will be synonymous with the best who has ever done it."

“I fail to see how this has anything to do with me. Nor do I really want to
be synonymous with the best who has ever done it. I’m no Pike, Kirk,
Picard, or Sisko. I’m not a Riker or Janeway. I just want to do the best I
can and right by my crew.”

" That's what they did. The best , the true best , never set out to achieve
glory or notoriety. They do what is right when it matters most for the
people who matter most. " Tyrek said and looked down shaking his head.
" I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I wanted to be posted to the Exeter.
Solid crew , Solid commanding officer.
I've drawn the short straw often in my life. So when I was posted to the
Exeter it was nothing short of a privilege."

"Please, please stop." Trip pleaded. "I didn't set out to make history or
get noticed. I'm not the person you think I am. This is ship is great
because of her crew, not because of me."

Tyrek nodded his head.
" I will stop as ordered. Apologies Captain."

“No, not its fine.” Trip paused. “It’s just, with great power comes great
responsibility. Due to my age, my position, my fast track. I’m under a huge
microscope and a lot of scrutiny. At times I don’t even know if I am
allowed to feel proud of my accomplishments, because even the slightest bit
of an ego will get me a reputation with those who are jealous of my spot.”

Tyrek listened to Captain Williams.

“So, I just….I don’t even take compliments any more, because I am afraid of
being known as both the wunderkind but also an egotistical jackass.”

" When I joined the exchange program and came to Earth. I was afforded the
opportunity to read preliminary service records of assignments that would
be open to me and only one stuck out. I read about the planetary defense
grid established around Mars by a half Romulan engineer, I read about
numerous incidents surrounding a nova squad pilot, I read about one of the
most brilliant neurosurgeons in the fleet. I even read reports on the
fighter wing." Tyrek shrugged.

“I see.” Trip replied.

" I do my research, Captain Williams. The most interesting thing of all was
the fact that all these great things were accomplished by Ensigns and
junior Lieutenants. Then to find out that these individuals were united on
one ship, under the command of a fighter pilot turned fighter wing
Commander…I knew I had to be a part of this." Tyrek paused and drew a deep
breath.
" And being that my life will be over before any of you will have the
chance to see your hairs turn grey. I knew I had to make it to this crew.
You have all done so much in so little time, and if since my time is
precious to me. I didn't want to waste it serving anywhere else." Tyrek
explained.

“Well I appreciate that, but it seems I have you stuck here on nebula duty.”

" Well you cant expect to be chasing Pah Wraith cultists and traveling to
the Andromeda galaxy all the time, Captain." Tyrek laughed.

“It has been entertaining, overall, I think. I’m pretty sure I had sex with
a Q. Well sort of. I was brainwashed and she may have been inhabiting a
mortal body. But still counts I guess. Not sure if it means I cheated on my
wife…..And we went to a whole different galaxy. So I guess thats two fun
stories.”

" Well you and your crew certainly defy the notion of youth being coupled
with inexperience." Tyrek remarked.
" The exploits of you and this
haven't and won't go unnoticed and that fact isn't contingent on personal
comfort or acceptance. "

“See that is the problem. I want to go unnoticed. Because what if I am a
fluke, what if I don’t pan out, what if all I am remembered for was being
one of Starfleet’s biggest mistakes.”

" Life is full of what ifs and risks. If it wasn't there would be no point
in living at all. All I'm saying is you have a list of accolades to be
proud of. Don't let humility take that from you. Because if you do you
might regret it. " Tyrek stated.

“Look, it’s not that I don’t recognize my worth and value. I have self
esteem coming out of my butt. But sometimes it feels like Starfleet screwed
me over by making me a Captain at 23, by giving me the fighter wing at 22.
Double promoting me no less. I mean, what else is there for me to achieve?”

" Tomorrow could hold something , Sir"

“The sky isn’t the limit for me because I already made it to the sky. I’ve
had a meteoric rise, which means my fall from grace could be massive. But
that’s fine, because I’m not in it for the medals, though I have plenty.
I’m not in it for the accolades, but let’s face it, if I weren’t married my
“legend” would be sufficient enough for me to get laid at every Starfleet
bar from here to the Federation and Klingon border.” Trip replied. Of
course it was also because he was as chiseled as a norse god.

" That sounds preferable to me." Tyrek said, not wanting to disclose his
fondness of the concept of being laid across lightyears due to his mythos.

“No, I know my worth, I know I have much to be proud of, this isn’t false
humility. But if I dwell on what I have done, then I fear for what happens
if I fall. Fear gets people killed. So I rather not focus on how &^@^@^@^@
awesome I am, and I am, and be as humble as I can be. Because that, that
won’t get my people killed.”

" I see, so you practice discretion just as much as I do. You know your
worth but conceal it. Back home I'm sort of a big deal myself." Tyrek
laughed slightly.
" The Pro Consul of the Romulan Republic , back before she was elected ,
sought me out several times and…let's just say I didn't have to go from
here to the Federation and klingon border for that one. " Tyrek smirked.

“Well, I’m fine being a one woman man. But between you and me, if you ended
up with someone like my wife, you’d never want to park your shuttle in
another bay, ever. I mean, if you ever saw her naked, you’d think she was
the goddess of beauty herself. But I’m probably speaking too freely.”

" My wife was of that same caliber." Tyrek said with a smile.
" A true vision to behold."

“And I do have a place where I allow myself to be showered with praise. But
hey, I do my best to be super dad and I’m not going to tell my daughter she
can’t call me the bestest daddy ever.”

" I've missed that opportunity and I'm glad I did. Considering my terminal
illness and all that. I would have been a memory before they were fifteen."
Tyrek stated.

“Why do you say that? How much time do you actually have?”

Tyrek sighed..
" With current medical technology ? Maybe 10 good years followed by about 5
years of having my own nervous system turning against me… "

“It’s neurological right? Perhaps the implant I have, that keeps my early
onset dementia in check could be adapted to attack your illness as well.”

Tyrek was shocked.
" Wait , What? You have dementia?" He asked.

“Yeah, its not common knowledge, but yeah. Was caught on my last physical.
But its kept in check, and with my implant, which constantly repairs any
damage, I’ll live a long, happy, and normal life. Maybe even get to spoil
my great grandkids some day.”

" I won't tell anyone, But yes mine is neurological in part. Tuvan syndrome
attacks the central nervous system. Currently stage 1 and 2 can be cured
thanks to the research done on Trill, but I have mid to late stage 3…"

“Well that doesn’t mean you can’t try. The Trill scientists don’t have
access to the implant or didn’t until they rejoined the federation. I mean,
there are some who view the dangers of the implant, due to the fact that it
adapted borg technology, and it could be twisted, but so can the most basic
discovery. But if it could prolong your life, beat death. Talk to Comma….er
Dr. Bracken, she’s the one who could be the most immediate help.”

" Captain forgive my excitement, but this could potentially save upwards
of a million people. We Romulans have reverse engineered several borg
technologies…this could be huge. I'm probably saying more than most would
be comfortable with, but with our understanding of borg technology we could
possibly reach a point where the risks could be significantly reduced. "
Tyrek could feel his heart racing in his abdomen.

“Well, don;t get your hope up too much, it may not work. But it’s worth a
shot right? Anyways, it’s time for me to go be super dad.”

" Yes it is…" Tyrek said, still in a state of shock
"Captain Williams, before I go there is something I need to ask." He said
as he stood up.

“Shoot.”

" The Romulan members of the marine detachment will most likely be coming
on board with their service daggers. Would you be accepting them ? " Tyrek
asked.

“No, I will not.” Trip replied,

" Oh really?" Tyrek asked.

“I am not their commanding officer.” Trip paused. “You are.”

Tyrek smiled.
" Very well Captain, go enjoy being super dad. Thank you for dinner , Sir."

Trip waited for Tyrek to leave and smiled. It was at home, with his family,
with his wife and his kids, that he truly allowed himself to relax, let
loose, and accept the accolades that he had earned.
