Mission: Space was cool before it mattered
Day: 1
Stardate: 2446.04.25

(USS Exeter -Observation Lounge - CO, Captain Trip Williams, FO, Commander
Alex Jones, CEO/2O, Commander Keira Merek, and SOPS/3O Commander Tyrek
Na’Rel - 1800)

Trip sat in his chair fuming. He was not happy with the orders he had
received. That they neglected to tell him before executing the orders
pissed him off, but what else did he expect from Marines. He had already
relayed the orders to Commander Jones, but he felt it was important to
share them with the rest of the command staff, especially commander Na’Rel.

“Thanks for joining me on this impromptu meeting, I guess the universe
deemed fit to give us some more excitement.”

~Good thing my dinner plans were for later.~ Keira thought but said nothing.

“I just spoke with the Starfleet Marine Corp. It seems that they neglected
to tell us that we will be receiving a detachment of 25 Marines to serve on
the Exeter in an infantry capacity. They will be arriving tomorrow on the
USS Pete Mitchell. Well 24 of them at least.”

"Why only twenty-four?" Keira asked.

Tyrek kept his eyes on Captain Williams. Feeling something borderline
outlandish was happening.

“I’ll get to that in a moment. Apparently after Commander Na’Rel went full
starfleet, some of his comrades decided they would do the same. 8 Romulan
Centurions, 2 Reman Centurions, and a Romulan science officer all joined
Starfleet and were able to achieve full commissions. Starfleet didn’t know
what to do with them. The centurions entered the marine corp. But there are
still those who distrust Romulans. So they decided to make them part of a
pilot program to see how well Romulan officers can integrate into the
fleet. And since we have two active duty officers with Romulan heritage,
one Reman NCO, and had two other Romulans serve on board in the form of
Ravok and Nesha, well they decided to send them our way, since we have the
most experience.”

" A training ground for Romulans…" Tyrek remarked.

"Or a dumping ground…" Keira mumbled.

“Hey…be nice…” Alex chided, “Might not go totally wahooney shaped…” He was
in whimsical humour.

“Oh, and here is the kicker, Commander Tyrek Na’Rel, pursuant to Starfleet
Order, protocol number 62222, you are hereby officially transferred from
Starfleet Unrestricted Line Officer to a Member of the Starfleet Marine
Corp at the rank of Lt. Colonel, effective immediately. Your official title
will be Commanding Officer of Exeter Marine Detachment. They felt with your
experience you were the only person fit for the job. Needless to say, I’m
not too pleased, but congratulations I guess.”

Tyrek rocked in his chair, as he struggled to hold his tongue.
" I hope this decision is solely based on my experience and not because I
happen to be the same species ? They do know we aren't…made in a cookie
cutter fashion , right?"
Tyrek stopped himself and raised his hand to the Captain.
" I'm sorry Captain, I have spoken in a manner unfit for my station.
Apologies Sir."
Tyrek's concern was based on a mix of things. One of them being the feeling
that he was being moved because of what he was and not who he was, and the
other because Captain Williams was someone who he had come to respect a
great deal and didn't want the young , but capable Captain to be a
continuing test ground for new ideas. Captain Williams already faced the
day to day struggles of being a commanding officer and on top of that he
still had a family to take care of.

“Relax Commander.” Alex said warmly. “If I’ve learned anything in my years
in the Fleet, it’s that contrary to Fleet and Federation Doctrine and
policy over the last ten to fifteen years, it’s that actually, they usually
do things for a good reason. Where one has a square peg for instance, one
can possibly make it fit an octagonic hole large enough, given time, and
enough of the right specialisms, one may encounter a bunch of square holes
that the peg may fit.” He smiled once more. “Short version, you’ll do fine.”

“You’re race, may be the reason why the marines are coming here, yes, but
not why they picked you. You are someone people will follow into battle,
someone people will look to for inspiration and leadership, you are a
solider and a leader, and scored extremely high in all your equivalency
tests. You are chosen because of who you are not what you are.” Trip
contributed.

Tyrek looked at both of them as the rocking of his chair came to an end.
" Thank you Commander, thank you captain." Tyrek said, getting ahold of
his emotions.
" What of my status as a member of the command segment aboard this vessel ,
Sir ?"

“You will remain a member of the Command staff and Third officer, as to how
you and the marines interact to the chain of command, we will figure that
out as we go. You will have your own detachment Executive Officer. But you
answer to me, so at least that doesn’t change.”

" Good , I was beginning to worry, Captain." Tyrek replied with a warm
smile.

“As for other matters, Keira, I need you to prepare the shuttle bays for
some changes. Our Delta Class Shuttle, the Two Five type 20 shuttles, the 2
Type 21 cargo shuttles, and the two type 22 shuttles are being removed and
will be transferred over to the Pete Mitchell and her sister ship, the USS
Tom Kazansky. We will instead be receiving a second Cheron Class, the NX-04
Cerberus, a fourth Red River Class, the Texoma, a second Argo Class
shuttle, a Texas class armored vehicle, and a Yellow Jacket class Marine
Dropship, the Blackstone. The Armored vehicle can be stored inside the
Blackstone. So there ya go. We need it done before 0900 tomorrow, that is
the arrival time of our new guests.”

"Cutting the time table a little close…" Keira said.

“Is that doable?” Trip replied.

~ How's that saying go? Twice your weight in cargo…if you keep half the
canaries in the air, you're all right…~

"We'll keep half the canaries flying, and get it done." Keira said.

“AJ, anything you’d like to add?” Trip asked.

Alex paused for thought. “What facilities are they going to need for
training, kit storage, quartermastery and the like? If it’s on a holodeck,
great, but we’ll need to look at the power draw.”

“That we can figure out, I’ll need to get with the quartermaster and figure
out room assignments. My guess is we are going to have to start bunking
folks together and transfer some of our civilians off ship. Which sucks,
because they are family. But that is something I can figure out tonight.
All of you are dismissed, except for Colonel Tyrek, whom I’d like to have
dinner with so we can start figuring out or little curveball.”
