Mission: Prelude to a Broken Promise Pt.2

Day: 1

Stardate: 2446.04.23

( Norian system- Pirate vessel - Mess hall- Varro Kasha- 0840)

After months of building their armaments, stockpiling supplies and
clearing out the competition in the lawless reaches of Federation space the
time to take the next step was at hand.

With the crew assembled in the mess hall of the ship formerly known as the
USS Brutus, recently acquired from the shipyard in the

Re'Kellian system, Varro Kasha stood in the center of the room and waited
to speak. Once everyone had arrived he looked around the room.

" This ship is one of several we have acquired. This ship itself was once
in the service of starfleet. " His muffled voice rang loudly as he slowly
turned in place, his eyes meeting those of the crew.

" Starfleet." He scoffed.

" Most of you are here because of their negligence, their incompetence. The
Federation failed so many of you and through their inaction allowed many
more to die in the lawless reaches of space." He said, as he stopped
turning and approached Lamena, one of the Orion females he freed from the
ferengi moonbase.

" You are just one example of many here who know the price of the
Federation's blind eye, your family was taken hostage. Your father and
mother were slain in front of you. You and your sister were sold off like
property to the highest bidder, then transported lightyears away from your
home, across Federation space no less. "

Lamena looked at him and clenched her fist and straightened her posture as
she forced herself to hold back tears.

Varro turned his gaze to another individual, a young human man.

" And you Kalen, your civilian transport vessel was attacked on its return
to Earth from Risa. Pirates stormed that ship and killed most of the
occupants…including your wife."

Kalen looked down.

Varro stepped closer to him.

" Eyes up." He said sharply

Kalen looked back up and stared at the masked face of Varro.

" You lost the woman you loved and witnessed others die on that day and
where was the Federation ? Where was Starfleet? Did they even bother
looking for you ? " Varro asked.

Kalen shook his head.

" No , they said it was up to the Risians because they didn't have the
resources."

Varro laughed maniacally and turned to the others in the room and raised
his arms to them.

" They didn't have the resources, did you hear that ?" He asked
rhetorically as the assembled members of the crew exchanged glances with
each other.

" They had the resources, they've always had the resources, but they
lacked priorities. " Varro declared as he turned back to face Kalen.

" They were too concerned with building a starbase in the Trill system.
Starfleet's response to the ever growing threats facing the Alpha quadrant
because of their own failings was to send small detachments of Rangers out
into deep space and crew ships with captain's who hadn't even celebrated
their twenty-fifth birthdays. They placed lives in the hands of graduates
straight out of the academy. They were too concerned with portraying the
image of Starfleet's rise from the ashes to worlds they had lost to even
care about those still under their PROTECTION."

Varro yelled.

The crew members began mumbling amongst themselves.

Varro looked at them.

" How many distress calls went unanswered? How many lives were lost, how
many more were stolen and sold off like cattle? "

He paused and looked at the Lamena.

" Too many." She said, and looked at the others around her.

" My sister took her own life because she couldn't deal with the trauma
that she went through. "

Varro approached her.

" So if no one else is looking out for us then we must look out for each
other. " He stepped back and once again turned to those around him. Raising
his arms as if he were beckoning to them.

" Starfleet is just as guilty as those that we have taken the fight to. "
Varro stated.

Viktor Yergo, a human male and one of Varro's most trusted Lieutenants,
stepped forward.

" We are less than a light year away from the Tellar ranger outpost. Long
ranged sensors have determined that they have no more than nine attack
fighters and two, maybe three type 14 shuttles. " Yergo explained.

" We could take them out before they even knew what hit them."

" But they are Starfleet, should we really be picking a fight with them?"
A member of the crew asked with concern.

Varro looked at the crew member.

" They have already made a move on us."

Without hesitation the doors opened and a man was dragged into the room by
his arms and tossed to the floor at Varro's feet.

Yergo pointed to the man who was wearing a starfleet uniform and whose face
showed the signs of being roughed up.

" This is one of their reconnaissance pilots. He opened fire on one of our
ships. His attack killed three people. "

Varro crouched down next to the starfleet officer.

" Lieutenant Branson."

" Lieutenant Edmond Branson 7751-20-1358" The starfleet officer said over
and over again to himself.

" Ah yes the old soundoff. Your mumblings don't dishearten me. " Varro said
as Lieutenant Branson continued to repeat himself over and over.

" You killed three of our people and wounded four others, one of them might
not survive the day. So I'll tell you what. You killed some of ours and now
we'll kill all of yours, how does that sound ? " Varro asked.

Lieutenant Branson began to sob as sweat poured down his face, but
continued to repeat himself. " Lieutenant Edmond Branson
7751-20-1358…Lieutenant Edmond.."

Varro stood up and looked down at the officer.

" I want him to watch."

Yergo stepped forward and picked up the officer and shoved a dirty cloth in
his mouth to muffle his insufferable starfleet incantations.

" You're going to have one hell of a view Lieutenant " Yergo said mockingly
and led the officer through the assembled officers and out of the mess
hall.

Varro looked around one final time.

" We have less than an hour before they realize he's gone. All hands to
battle stations." He ordered and took his leave.
