Roger stepped into the phaser range after being summoned by Lieutenant McCoy for a practice session.

A few weeks had passed since leaving Vandalos and the Exeter had been assigned to study a nebula. The science types were happy and busy. The engineering department was taking advantage of the time to run diagnostics and make any needed repairs. The rest of the crew, with little to do other than the daily and mundane routines, seemed to be getting bored. At least that's what he was sensing. He had become thankful for security drills.

Roger adjusted to his new duty shift. The people he was getting to know were the same people that were there previously, but going from the night shift to the day watch, was almost like being on a new ship.

"Good morning, Ensign. Are you ready for your assessment?" said McCoy.

"Yes, sir," said Roger.

McCoy explained the parameters of the assessment. "You can choose from three different types: phaser rifle, and the dust buster style phaser, or a pistol style phaser. Whichever one is more comfortable for you. Any questions before we start?"

Roger chose the 'dust buster'. "I'm ready."
