Roger stepped onto the platform. He had trained many times in phaser ranges while in the academy, but the one on the Exeter was slightly different, though the test was basically the same.

"Computer, begin program."

[[Your task is to hit the blue targets.]] said the computer. [[Program beginning.]]

A round blue shape moved slowly in front of Roger. He easily hit the target. Sensing movement to his right, a blue and red ball were moving in opposite directions. Firing again, he hit the blue ball.

Turning to the left, he saw a blue, a red, and a yellow. They were beginning to move faster. A quick shot and he scored another blue.

As the exercise progressed, shapes were popping up from all directions and moving at different speeds. Roger was feeling the excitement of an adrenaline rush.

[[Program complete.]]

Roger was surprised at how quickly three minutes had passed. Though he missed several targets, he was confident he did well. Stepping off the platform, he rejoined Lieutenant McCoy.

"Sir," said Roger, nodding.
