Mission: Space was cool before it mattered
Day: 1
Stardate: 2446.04.25
(USS Exeter - CSO office - CSO Lt Erin Cortez - 0802)
Sitting at her desk and looking through the data that they had collected on
the nebula overnight, Erin rubbed her eyes, sighed and got up from her
chair and wandered over to her replicator and ordered a strong coffee. As
she felt the warmth of the cup in her hands, She sighed and wandered back
to her chair.
Nearly two months had passed since the end of the mission that had taken a
turn. Two months since her talk with the Princess and the rather eye
opening conversation at the end of the mission with Lieutenant Roberts.
Smiling to herself as she sat back in her chair, she took a sip of her
coffee and sighed. The past three days had been interesting to her and her
team but she also knew that the same could not be said for the rest of the
crew.
Doing scientific study of a Nebula had brought a welcome change in the
energy in her department. Everyone was working hard and together. A
cohesive team of people working towards a common goal and Erin could not
have been prouder of her team. She knew that they had been through some
changes over the last few months, losing people and nearly losing her as
well in the incident on the holodeck, they had banded together and were now
more like a family.
Smiling as she glanced at the early team working hard in the main lab, she
also knew that they had seen a change in her. None of them knew the exact
reason for the change in her demeanour but the ships gossip tree had been
keeping them up to date. Mostly, all they knew was that she and Commander
Jones had been taking lunch together for the last month or so pretty much
every other day. She had even caught a couple of them trying to take
lunches at the same time to be ‘conveniently’ in the mess hall at the same
time.
To be honest, she couldn’t blame them at all. She was happy and, although
they had yet to take their official first date, she had enjoyed Commander
Jones’ company. Even just for an hour to talk whilst they ate, she had
found herself looking forward to those moments, just to relax in his
company and talk about things not work related had become a safe port in
the storm. Now, the last couple of days had been filled with work and she
had barely had time to even grab a quick meal before returning to the lab.
Taking another sip of the coffee, she turned her attention back to the data
streaming through overnight. Reading through some of the information, she
knew why Starfleet had been so interested in the radiation streaming from
the pulsar but she also knew that she needed someone with a medical eye to
go over the data with. That had lead to another thought that had been in
her mind for the last couple of weeks. Something that she had finally
worked up the courage to look into.
~But that can wait for now, right now the main focus is the Nebula.~ Erin
thought to herself as she drained the coffee from the cup and took a
breath. Looking out of her office again, she saw West and Parker talking.
~an odd couple to be talking but i am glad that they are~ she thought to
herself as she stood and stretched. ~Oh back to it.~ she thought to herself
and walked out into the main lab and headed for one of the main consoles.
Nodding to both men as she walked past, she did not want to interrupt their
conversation and knew how people got when the boss walked past. So, with a
smile to herself, she sat at another console and began checking the current
scans with those that had been taken over the last evening to see if there
was any change in the radiation or infact anything that would provide at
least some nugget of excitement to give her team.
