Mission: Space was cool before it mattered
Day: 1
Stardate: 2446.04.25
(USS Exeter - Holodeck 2 - FO Cmdr Alex Jones & CSO Lieutenant Erin Cortez
- 1901)
Alex drew a breath, and let it out gently, wishing not for the first time
that evening that he had opted for something simpler, and he had in
actuality enjoyed himself finding this simulation. He’d been worried about
it actually existing, but this era seemed very popular, and there were
numerous programs, all of them very highly rated, the one that he had
chosen, the simulation that he stood in now, had been the winner of some
prize or other for the richness of it’s depth, character, and the sheer
atmosphere of the world.
The bustle of the streets swam around him as he stood on the promenade next
to the river, aware of the door to the holodeck had opened and Erin stepped
through. Alex felt his mouth dry at her presence, a single glance beget
another longer lingering one. He made a mental note to thank Ailynn, the
dress made Erin look utterly resplendent. Gorgeous simply wasn’t the word.
Feeling his hands go sweaty and his mouth still dry, he stepped forward the
crowd splitting as he approached her. Slowly regaining his composure he
removed the bicorn hat that was part of the uniform that he wore and bowed
slightly.
“Miss Cortez, If it’s not presumptuous, may I say you look utterly amazing.
Please forgive the deception, I hope you enjoy this.”
Truth be told, Erin had spent a good few minutes stood outside the holodeck
wondering whether to go in. The conversation she had had with Lieutenant
Roberts played in her mind as she stood, wondering what was on the other
side of the door.
Taking a breath, she stepped through and all her senses were immediately
assaulted with the rich variety of sights, sounds and smells. The cold air
made her shiver almost imperceptibly as she took a step forward and the
door closed behind her and the archway dissolved into the scene around her.
Taking in the hustle and bustle, Erin felt two things immediately. One,
marvel at the simulation she found herself in and two, utter disbelief that
someone had gone to all this trouble just for her. As she looked around,
she became aware of someone speaking beside her.
Turning, she saw Alex in what appeared to be Naval attire of the period. As
he spoke, she took a second to look at him. ~damn… he looks just.. I have
no words.~ she thought to herself.
"Mr Jones. You look…" she paused a second and felt her cheeks blush
slightly, ".. handsome. What is this? I mean you did not go to all this
trouble just for me?"
“Well,” He began, blushing at the compliment, but offering his arm “I will
attest that I’m not expecting anyone else.” He looked at her and winked
gently. “As to what this is…”
Erin took his arm and smiled at him. ~damn he is really taking this
seriously.~
He fell silent as Erin rested her arm on his and they took a slow stroll
toward the side of the river, men, women and children alike bustling around
them, but parting politely.
He gestured to the River Thames in front of them thickly frozen with ice,
and with what seemed half the population of early Victorian London walking
the ice, or skating, the air thick with the smog from factory, mill and
foundry. “Welcome…Miss Cortez…to the last great frost fair.”
