"Thank you, Jori," said Captain Williams.

Jori studied the captain's reaction. Deltans had a subconscious form of empathy among themselves, but over time, and with experience, they developed an enhanced ability to read people. Jori got the sense the captain viewed the ball as more than a gift because of his hospitality, that he could be analyzing and assessing her.

She was young and still learning, and was just getting to know the captain, so as usual, she was probably over-thinking again.

"So no more baseball, huh? Are you going to take up any other sports?" said Williams.

"I haven't thought about that, sir," said Jori. "Baseball is fun and I like it a lot, but serving on a ship means I hardly get to play."

Jori wondered if the captain was joking, rather than actually wanting to know her future athletic plans.

"Sir, I understand that I shouldn't have hit Josh with the pitch, but he really did have it coming." Jori paused. "I also apologize if I disappointed you."
