Mission: A new day dawns
Day: 2
Stardate: 2446.01.29
(Earth - Santiago - Cortez Ranch - CSO Lieutenant Erin Cortez -1645)
After talking to the Vice Admiral, Erin had realised that she had needed
time to think. Knowing that there was a senior officer get together at the
Williams/Bracken Ranch later that evening, Erin had gone to the one place
that she knew she would be able to clear her mind and way up her choices.
Erin had gone home.
After the initial hugs and how are you’s, Siobhan, Erin’s mother had seen
something in her daughter that she knew was weighing on her and, prying her
away from her father who was seeming like he would never let her out of her
sight again, the pair had gone for a walk towards the stables on the family
property.
Looking at her daughter, she smiled softly, “Come on bean. Tell me what’s
on your mind.”
Erin shook her head and sighed, “Mom, don’t call me bean.”
“Force of habit. Sue me.” Siobhan replied with a wink. “Talk to me.”
Looking towards the horses in the stables, Erin turned back to her mother
and said, “I spoke with Vice Admiral Williams earlier today….” and the
whole story of the incident at the baseball pitch and what had happened
earlier came out.
Siobhan listened to her daughter talk and took a moment to consider what
she had said before replying, “So, if i understand you right… the Vice
Admiral offered you a teaching post and lab time to work on what ever this
mysterious project is?”
Erin nodded. She knew that part of her wanted to stay on Earth, to help
develop a potential vaccine against the borg but there was a part of her
that wanted to be out there with the Exeter.
Siobhan, watching her daughter, could see that she was torn. A dichotomy of
things her daughter was. One side wanting to be at home and safe, the other
to be out there with not knowing what could be around the next corner. She
also knew that there was something else tearing at her daughter. From what
she understood, her department had lost two of their own. Siobhan knew from
bitter experience, what that could do to a leader. Taking her daughter’s
hand in hers, she looked into her eyes as she spoke, “Only you can make
that decision. What i can do is tell you what i see. I see a woman capable
of doing what ever she sets her mind to. Someone that has been through the
mill more times than anyone should have been but has come out the other
side.
Now you need to decide what you want in life. Do you want to just settle
for a cushy job or reach for the stars? Do you want to walk where others
haven’t or walk where many have?”
Erin looked at her mother and gripped her hand, “The stars have always
called to me, you know that. Pop knows that too. He is going to hate me for
going back out there again after what happened recently…”
Siobhan laughed as she spoke, “He isn’t. You are just his little girl and
he loves you. He wants what or who will make you happy.”
Shaking her head, Erin smiled, “Always the romantic, Mom. You sure you
aren’t descended from those Irish Matchmakers you told me about.”
Siobhan pulled her daughter into a hug and sighed happily, “You know where
your heart lies. Now you need to go grab it with both hands. Go be the
woman we know you can be.”
Erin closed her eyes in her mother’s embrace and sighed happily, “That
means i have to go to that get together at the Captain’s ranch doesn’t it?”
Siobhan nodded and said, “Yep, Senior officers parties are always fun.”
