(Earth - Starfleet HQ- Cmdr Ailynn Bracken and FltSrgGen VAdm Aimee Bracken
1130)
The tall amazonian-like figure stepped through the entrance to Starfleet
Headquarters. Whereas some would hesitate, momentarily awed by the
magnificence of the Atrium, she wasn’t. Nothing deterred the young
Commander’s fixed, steely gaze as she swept through to the long corridor
that lay behind the reception desks, leaving whispered conversation in her
wake.
“Commander, they’re waiting for you. End of the Corridor. Welcome Home.” A
voice came from the desk, Ailynn needed no introduction, recent events had
catapulted the Exeter into the full eye of a large proportion of the Fleet.
“Thank you Lieutenant, got to get back to get ready for the next adventure
yes?” She smiled pleasantly in reply, without breaking step.
“Quite so Commander, Quite so.” He answered the retreating figure with a
smile and a small shake of the head.
“Was that…?” a young cadet fourth class who was stood at the desk asked.
“Yes Cadet, it was.”
“Daaamn.” He managed. “Talk about having stones of brass.”
The Lieutenant looked up in shock, but then looked at the situation from
the Cadets point of view. All of this was so new to him.
“You’re not wrong, not wrong at all. You need the third door on the right.
Student Admissions.”
To say that Ailynn was in her element was an understatement, as she strode
down the ornate corridor, she could feel as much as hear all the questions
and comments that swam around her. She smiled as the bustle of people
parted, making way for her.
“That’s her…”
“...Exeter…”
“Andromeda...bloody Andromeda I tell you”
“Computers went utterly barmy, had to limit the data transfer rate to
capture it all properly”
“Barely twenty six too.”
And so it went for the entire length of the corridor.
Finally Ailynn saw what she was headed towards a small group of Officers,
all of flag rank. Unafraid, and without breaking her step, she strode
towards them. “Admirals, Commodore.” She nodded a greeting as she addressed
all their ranks.
“Commander.” They replied, some with a smile, others with a stoic nod.
A tall figure stepped from the back of the group, it was a figure that
Ailynn had been familiar with all her life, but had never been stood in
front of in this manner. The expression on the older woman’s face was
almost unreadable, there was a terseness around her mouth that might
suggest that a royal dressing down was on the cards, this was held at
counterpoint though by the hint of proud amusement around the eyes.
“Admiral.” Ailynn said formally.
“Don’t you ‘Admiral’ me Commander. You’ve stirred up a bloody hornet’s nest
this time my girl.”
Ailynn turned to the Commodore stood near her. “The prophet’s did I do this
time?”
“I’m not sure,” he said quietly, she’s been in this mood all morning.
“Mummy?”
“Don’t…” The Admiral stepped forward, Ailynn noticed a small tear in her
eye, she then pulled Ailynn into a tight, bear hug. “Don’t you ever do that
again. You’ve aged me twenty years. I’ve been so worried about you. I am so
crazy crazy proud of you my baby girl.”
“Muuum! Don’t be such a dippy cow, not in front of all your friends. I
haven’t been far…twenty-first century Toronto, the seventh circle of hell
and Andromeda, all in a day's work.” Ailynn shrugged dismissively.
Aimee released her daughter. “Haven’t you lot got jobs to do?” she asked as
she led Ailynn into her office where she motioned to the sofa in the
window.
“So…I saw your sabbatical request. I’d kind of like you about here too,
whenever you can.”
Ailynn nodded, “We’ll see, it isn’t something I asked for because I just
wanted a change, I asked for it because I came really close to losing my
mind mum.” Ailynn poured a glass of water from the jug in front of her and
sat back, taking a sip. “There’s so much I need to talk to you about. We
haven’t got on well since I was posted to Mars, and I don’t want that, I
want a mum that I’m really close to and that I can spend time, and have a
laugh with, that I can share all my problems.”
“I know, and you have. I haven’t dealt with things well. You’ll be at the
Villa?”
Ailynn nodded. “Caity too. Otherwise, for the moment I’ll be in between
here and Mars, at least until the Exeter leaves dock.”
“It will be nice having you about. I’ve missed you. We are overdue a lot of
long chats, the villa is the best place for them.”
“Yeah…I have so much to tell you.” She smiled gently, her view pulled
toward the golden gate bridge.
“I know you do Ailynn, I know.”
