Mars Base - An Overview
Admiral Remae Ktell has been assigned to command the newly reinvented Mars Defense Perimeter (MDP). The Federation has decided to rebuild from the inside out, starting by protecting its core assets in the Sol System. The Admiral is tasked with not only overseeing the combined station but building a team to restore Starfleet's presence in the Alpha Quadrant.
The new team must investigate the status of the fleet, outposts, and allies of the Federation, determining who remains a friend and who has become an adversary.
With the loss of Andorian (and other worlds') knowledge and assistance, Starfleet must access the remains of its primary defense, scientific, construction, and research capabilities.
The Mars Station that formerly housed the Mars Defense Perimeter will become the first in the effort to reconstruct Starfleet's ability to not only defend Earth but to also go back out into the stars after a period of contraction.
Battle History: The Battle of Sector 001
During the Federation Civil War, Task Force Alpha mounted a critical defense of Starbase Valhalla—the command node of the Mars Defense Perimeter. The battle saw the 52nd Fleet and their Klingon allies mass for an attack on the MDP, which was controlled by Admiral Doenitz's forces. The USS Boudicca successfully breached the defenses, bringing down the defense stations and securing victory for the 52nd Fleet.
Andorian Technology: The Rebuilding Challenge
When Admiral Ktell arrived in 2444 to take command of the Mars Defense Perimeter, he discovered that much of the Andorian-designed sensor technology had been stripped by departing loyalists. This technological gap explains the current "Rebuilding" status of the MDP. The loss of Andorian expertise has forced Starfleet to rebuild sensor networks and defensive systems from scratch, significantly impacting operational readiness.
Why Mars? The Strategic Choice
Mars was chosen as the Federation's first rebuilding effort for several critical reasons:
- Proximity to Earth: Protecting the Sol System is the Federation's top priority after years of contraction
- Utopia Planitia Shipyards: One of Starfleet's most important shipyards, capable of constructing and repairing vessels
- Strategic Location: Mars serves as the command center for the 52nd Fleet and coordinates operations throughout Sector 001
- Existing Infrastructure: The Mars Defense Perimeter facilities, while damaged, provide a foundation for rebuilding
- Symbolic Importance: Rebuilding from the inside out demonstrates the Federation's commitment to protecting its core worlds
