(USS Raptor - Deck 5 - Bridge - 2O/CSec/Tac - Lt Commander T’Mur- 1015)

T’Mur had been running a series of pre-planned drills, to prepare the crew for the eventuality of
contact with the Xenolithe. Today’s first drill was going to be a little different. The only person
who knew what was going on was Luma. First of all, it would be nearly impossible to fool her.
And secondly, she did not want to spook the Lenai with what was about to happen. It took a bit
of convincing to get her to agree to keep the drill a secret from everyone, including Sienna. She
couldn’t be certain if Luma had informed her big brother about it. If she had, Sekal showed no
signs of foreknowledge.
She slowly circled the red button with her right ring finger, watching the chronometer. Then she
tapped it. The lights dimmed slightly, the klaxon rang out, and red lights flashed. She tapped
her comm channel.

“Red alert,” she announced. “All security and marine teams to their stations. Borders have
been identified on decks 2, 5, 12, and 16.”

This sent teams the bridge, sickbay, main engineering and environmental controls, and
antimatter storage. T’Mur began to record the reaction times.

Moments later Cal Dogan was standing on the bridge, directly in front of the turbo-lift. Anyone
coming on the bridge from that route would be blocked. The security team on the bridge had
already drawn their weapons.

(USS Raptor - Deck 5 - Sickbay - ACMO - Dr. Kyllee Stev -1016)

When Stev heard the red alert he wasn’t particularly taken by surprise. This had been their third
drill and each drill had been a stop up from the one before. I the past drills their routine had
been to prepare for casualties. However, this time, there were intruders on deck 5, which meant
that they were in imminent danger. This changed things a little.

He turned to watch the medical staff go into action. They were already breaking into teams and
preparing the trauma centers as well as the triage center. He had started his own timer when
the drill had been announced. A minute later everyone looked ready for what was to come,
although he knew they would never be truly ready for the real thing.

He watched as the first triage team approached the door to meet potential patients.

“Freeze,” he shouted. “There are intruders on our deck. We may be a target. Nobody is to step
out of that door without my expressed permission.”

There was a brumbling but everyone moved back to their places. The tension was think, and
Stev could hear some the heavy breathing from his staff. The protocol was for a security team
to come into sickbay within two minutes, then to take security measures.

Once a trio of security guards arrived Stev tapped his comm badge, “Computer, erect a level ten
force field around the entrance to sickbay. From this moment forward casualties will be beamed
directly to sickbay.”

[Awaiting authorization code.]

“Authorization, Kyllee alpha 853 gamma 2, execute.”

[Authorization code accepted. Containment field established.]

Kyllee tapped his badge again, “Kyllee to bridge, sickbay is secure. Inform all teams that
casualties will be beamed directly to sickbay.”
=^=Affirmative, Dr. Kyllee. That is the protocol. Teams have already been informed.=^=

“Well folks,” Stev said, turning the medical staff, “here we are at hurry up and wait. Expect worst
and hope for the best. I don’t want to lose anyone because we weren’t ready.”

They all stood around expectantly when something new happened. An alarm rang and three
holographic casualties appeared on three biobeds. This part of the drill Stev had programmed
himself. He wanted to give the medical staff an indication of what they might face in the event of
a real attack.

The first victim had an open chest wound. The second had an abdominal rupture as well as
various deep lacerations. The third was missing her left arm and had a gouge in her cheek.

Kyllee walked behind the team working on the chest wound. One of the younger medics was
looking a little… green. He stepped up to medic and whispered in his ear.

“If you think this makes you feel sick just think how he feels.”

The medic looked at Stev for a moment, took a deep breath and nodded. He stepped back up
to the biobed and got back to work.

He wasn’t at the third table soon enough before one of the interns stepped to the side and
began to heave the contents of his stomach on the floor. The others, conveniently, ignored him.
Stev didn’t have that luxury. He moved over and pulled the young man aside.

“Stevens,” he tried to remain calm, “pull it together. Everyone needs you now. Nobody more
than the patient.”

Stevens shook his head, “I know doctor, but I just…”

“I get it,” Stev said. “Your first trauma is always the worst. Clean up that mess and get back in
there. I’ll cover for you until you do.”

With that Kyllee stepped up to the table. The team had managed to control the bleeding from
the removed limb. Two were working on the face. He checked the IVs and blood type and then
looked at the wound of the arm.

“What do you think, Dr. Abrhams?” he asked.

“I think,” the doctor replied, “that she’s lucky to still be alive. We’ve learned a lot since leeches
and rubbing feces in eyes to cure blindness, but I’m pretty sure that the only answer here is
prosthetics.”

“Dr. Penn has been working on regenerating whole limbs,” Kyllee said, more as a passing
thought. “But I have no idea where he is in his research. He did tell Quinna that he was looking
for a live subject.”

Abrhams shrugged, “I hate experimental medicine. To be uncertain with someone’s life in the
balance.”

Stev nodded, “I agree. Let’s get that sealed and we can start looking into prosthetics later.”
Abrhams nodded and got to work. Stev looked around at the controlled chaos. And this was
only three casualties. What’s it going to look like when there are more? He was going to have
to have a word with Quinna. Time for her to get back into the game.

(USS Raptor - Deck 16 - CEO Office - CEO - Lieutenant Jg Tegian Pex - 1017)

Tegian was chafing at having to be on the bridge as often as he was. He missed the freedom
that he'd had on the Illuminar where his rotation on the bridge was expected just for momentous
occasions. Now, the Captain wanted him on the bridge most of the time. He felt like he had to
make excuses not to be there. Frankly, it felt silly. Most of the engineering work happened
elsewhere than the bridge.

This morning, however, he'd escaped. He'd had the engineering teams running drills on
everything. And Lieutenant Commander T'Mur had been good to her word and had her teams
training with engineering on key repairs of the Raptor. All in the holodecks, hallways, main
engineering and cargo bays. Wherever they could find space to create the drills for teams to
work together and learn the new systems.

Tegian was sitting at his desk reviewing four day's worth of drill assessments, noting where they
still had issues. All the teams needed another round of drills in repairing the phaser array.
Raptor's was different from Illuminar's and that seemed to be tripping a lot of the teams up. He
was just making notes in the schedule of the drills for today when the red alert sounded.
Tegian checked his monitor to see if the ship was under attack and realized it was another drill,
but this time, it was a ship-wide one. He realized he needed to play his part. He headed out of
his office to see people running around, many with no clear direction.

"To your stations!" yelled Tegian. "You know what to do. Get the security fields up around all
entry points to Main Engineering and hand out phasors to all personnel. Make sure all of them
are set to maximum stun."

Phasers were quickly handed out. Tegian let Ensign Ssvrech assign his team to cover the entry
points. Tegian grabbed another phaser as he was ambidextrous. He was more used to fighting
with an epee', but he'd been practicing with a phaser knowing that with the Xenolithe, his
weapons would be useless.

He stood in the middle of the room, where he could watch the multiple teams, ready to step in
where needed.

He watched the marines pin four Xenolithe against the security field with some of the marines
winking out in the firefight. The only scare they had was when the Xenolithe somehow
managed to get in through some one of the Jeffrey tubes. They were so big, they had trouble
getting out quickly and multiple phaser beams arced out to it including two from Tegian. As a
precaution more beams were fired down into the tube, removing two more holoprojections from
the tube, harming none of the engineering team.

"Lock the tubes and set the locks on a 64-bit encrypted rotating access that can only be
unlocked from one of our terminals in this room," ordered Tegian. "And then stand far enough
away from the accesses in case they try to blow them, but close enough so that you can hit
something trying to get out."

USS Raptor - Various location starting on Deck 1 -- 3O/ CMO Commander Quinna Solice -
1018)

At 1000 Quinna’s bridge shift was over which meant that it was time for Medical administrative
duties. She had been able to pull reports from both left the bridge as she completed the third
shift on bridge duty. When her relief entered she smiled at her friends. Then she went to the
Bridge pool room. The last couple of days she had been making it a habit to enter and learn
about the new faces. Some of the older faces had acquired full positions. Truth be told, she
went to replicate herself a cut of coffee to drink as she walked around the ship.

Her next goal was to walk through the sickbay and the counseling suites and check up on
everyone. She had been reading and compiling reports during her early morning shift. She was
all ready to make her daily report but felt like she needed that last stroll, just in case.

“Red alert,” she announced. “All security and marine teams to their stations. Borders have
been identified on decks 2, 5, 12, and 16.”

Today she would not make it that far. After Quinna had left the bridge pool room, she entered
the turbo-lift. Just as the lift started to descend down the shaft, the red klaxons went off. “Oh,
Crap,” Quinna commented to an audience of zero. “Computer, Bridge” She ordered.

“Access Denied.” The Bridge had already been on lockdown. So would be decks 2, 5, 12, and
16.”

“think, Quinna, Think.” She said to herself. “Deck 3,” Quinna called. From there she could
meet security teams and make their way to the second floor. Protecting the Bridge was the
main goal and securing the crucial decks would be in order.

The turbolift opened at deck 3 and there was a security contingent already there to meet her.
“Stand down. It’s Commander Solice. Ma’am.”

Quinna reached out her hand and the guard gave her a phaser rifle. “Do you have any
information at this point?” "
"No ma’am. The deck is secure.” The security officer said.

“Good, We need a team to secure Deck 2. After we secure deck 2, then we can make our way
down.”

(USS Raptor - Deck 12 - Security Office - SecO , CPO Steven Hammons - 1019)

Steven didn't have rounds currently so was sitting inside one of the offices with his feet propped
up on the desk and sipping from a mug of coffee, regular coffee mind you as in Kona, a
Hawaiian bean. There had been numerous variations of the original item discovered around
New Zealand many hundreds of years ago, Arabica which most closely matched the original
strain, Columbian which was grown in a tropical rain forest environment and on mountain slopes
and finally this variety which was cultivated among volcanic soils. Of those traditional earth
varieties a Kona single estate was the smoothest, least acidic and with the most 'kick'.
Hammons had become an instant fan upon discovering it. Note that we are not talking about
one that had been strained through the digestive system of a mammal and recovered from its
waste, the very thought gave Hammons the willies.

Now, many species had their own variations on a hot, caffeinated beverage and while Galk was
most fond of raktajino as many now were (he was a Klingon after all) Hammons viewed himself
as a traditionalist. There were as many varieties as there were worlds, heck he could pick from
several dozen including the first officers chocolate monstrosity if he wanted but death by sugar
was not on his bucket list. Compared to that, Alaya's super rich hot chocolate was tame.

Speaking of Galk, the old reprobate had just returned to the fold and immediately been assigned
to bridge duty. Steven found himself grinning at the thought. The Klingon had killed a high
ranking member of the Council, split a little of his holdings off to Lieutenant Trei for his own
reasons which Steven believed to be a reward for her services as cha'dich and was still
essentially numero dos in the klingon hierarchy as he understood it. He had been catapulted
into the past, died and then resurrected in their current timeline. Why the heck had he stepped
down from command of his own flagship to return to this crew? That baffled Steven. Galk had
promised to explain it when he had time, he was still settling in and getting acquainted with this
new ship and their current mission.

The jarring sound of the alert klaxon startled him and he nearly dropped the mug in surprise,
most importantly he only just refrained from unloading the hot contents of the mug full in his
face.

"Thank God for lids!" He quipped as he sprang to his feet and slapped it down on the desktop.

=^= Red alert. All security and marine teams to their stations. Boarders have been identified on
decks 2, 5, 12, and 16.=^=

"Now isn't that a pickle!" There had been no warning of incoming ships at all and you don't
transport to a ship from a cloaked vessel, the particle interference from the cloak wouldn't allow
it. That spelled another drill, and make no mistake there had been many security drills up to this
point, the chief of security seemed to take malicious delight in figuring out new variations to run.
"Oh well, we will be as prepared as her fiendish vulcan mind can make us." He had already
drawn his hand phaser and was hurrying through the door as he spoke.

Security central had become like a bee hive, Carol Lannis hurried by as he stepped out.

"Deck 16?" He shouted at her.

"Yes! Move your feet Hammons, you know main engineering is a critical point!"

"Do I ever!" It was also the closest to the security deck. He was right behind her and a half
dozen others as the ran from the security hub to the nearby turbolift.

"Lift is shut down!"
"Of course it's shut down Byers, it's SOP so the enemy isn't able to move about freely."
Hammons growled as he slid inside. "Security override, alpha 3. Deck sixteen, main
engineering."

The computer, referencing the override code and Hammons voice print quickly closed the doors
and began moving. A good thing he had added the specific location too, Raptor was nearly
twice the length of Illuminar and they could have had a heck of a run through enemy forces to
get there.

"Heavy stun, all of you!"

"Hammons, Xenolithe won't even feel that!"

"If they are Xenos yes, but if holograms it doesn't matter what setting you use. Just remember to
keep firing until they are incapacitated. If they are Xenos we have a lot bigger problem such as
no sensors and the entire bridge crew is asleep on shift. Besides, do you want to accidentally
vaporize a buddy?"

There was no answer to that, anyone with half a brain knew to keep their mouth shut and while
more brawn than brain ofttimes security officers were not dummies.

The lift stopped abruptly, the door opened and they were greeted with pandemonium.

Ariel heard the red alert and saw the red blazing klaxons. She jumped into action. She gathered
a security team of 6 and headed to Deck 3 with 1 charged phaser in hand, a dagger on her belt,
and some other utility items that can be of use. She had body armor on and set off to find
Quinna. When she found her, she was told by the security team on deck 3 that the deck is
secure. She nodded that she understood. She relayed the plan to Quinna.

" We have to be ready when we go to deck 2. My security team will protect us but look alive
when we step off the turbolift. It will be a hot situation. You are with me. Set phasers to high stun
and stay low. When we clear and secure the deck we will assess the situation from there. If you
are ready Lets rock."

(USS Raptor - Deck 3 - Corridor - SO- Ensign Larry ‘Lucky’ Day - 1021)

It had taken time, months, in fact, but the reintegration of the friendship between Larry Day, Ned
Neiderlande and Dusty Bottoms was finally starting to move together. They weren’t the theee
amigos they used to be, but it was a start. To be honest Dusty was the curmudgeon. He had
always been the practical one. He just could bring himself to fully trust Lucky, or believe that in
some reality they had been as close as brothers. Closer.
Still, they had been moved onto the same shift, and Larry was pretty sure that someone had
arranged for them to be on the same team. When the read alert sounded the quickly came
together and were at the turbo-lift when it opened, depositing Commander Solice with them.

They had reported to Solice that the deck was clear and she nodded, “Good, We need a team to
secure Deck 2. After we secure deck 2, then we can make our way down.”

A moment later Lt Trei arrived. Apparently she had gathered up the rest of the security team on
the deck. He wasn’t exactly sure why she would do that. Now there we eleven of them all in the
same area, blocking the corridor.

She must have heard what Solice had said and replied. "We have to be ready when we go to
deck 2. My security team will protect us but look alive when we step off the turbolift. It will be a
hot situation. You are with me. Set phasers to high stun and stay low. When we clear and
secure the deck we will assess the situation from there. If you are ready, let's rock."

Larry looked at Trei in disbelief. “Excuse me ma’am, but I believe that Commander Solice is the
ranking officer here. And you may not have noticed, or been at the briefing where we were
informed that the turbo lifts would not be able to access deck 2 from the turbolift as it has been
compromised already.”

He turned to face Solice, “Commander, if I might suggest, there is a turbolift maintenance area
over here. I suggest we use the access hatch to the shaft and climb our way up to deck 2. If we
can be a little stealthy we might get lucky and catch the intruders by surprise. Ma’am.”

“Good, We need a team to secure Deck 2. After we secure deck 2, then we can make our way

Quinna turned at Trei's arrival. She had taken charge. "We have to be ready when we go to

Quinna turned to another voice behind her. Larry Day spoke up. “Excuse me ma’am, but I

Quinna shook her head. This drill was a mess. She needed to get back on track. She knew
what to do. She turned to Mr. Day. “Alright, this is what we are going to do. We are going to
turn this around. We have a perimeter established here on Deck 3. We need to retake deck
two. Then we secure doing down. Mr. Day, I need you to check deck 2 and make sure there
are no intruders in the access area you suggested,” Quinna turned to Trei, “ Ms. Trei, when we
move to deck 2, I need your team to take point. We are going to need your abilities to sense out
any intruders that will be a potential problem in accomplishing our goal.

“Is everyone clear about their duties?” Quinna said. “Let’s do it.”

“Yea ma’am,” Larry said and nodded to his compatriots.

They led the group to the access hatch and opened it. Day pulled out his tricorder and scanned
just to ensure the shaft was empty, then slid inside. As he began to climb up the ladder he
wondered how it was that those who installed the lifts knew that at some point in time somebody
would have to climb up the inside of a turbolift shaft. It only took a couple of minutes to clamber
up the level to deck 2. Larry looked down to see Ned and Dusty below him.

Leaning against the edge of the ladder he scanned again. He put his finger to his lips to make
sure they stayed quiet then gave a thumbs up. Then he unlatched the hatch. Slowly he opened
the hatch and peeked out to the corroder. It was clear and silent, which was eerier than he had
expected.

He moved out of the shaft, phaser drawn and stood with his back against the wall. Then he
leaned forward. At first he didn’t see anything. Then he noticed several packages laying on the
floor. At a second glance he realized that they weren’t packages but bodies. He nearly jumped
out of his skin whenNed bumped into his arm.

Larry gave Ned a look of warning then indicated that there were four dead in the corridor.
Otherwise the corridor was clear. He nodded to Dusty who leaned back into the shaft and
motioned the others to continue their climb.

It didn’t take long to realize that they all weren’t going to fit in the tiny space around the shaft so
Larry motioned for Ned and Dusty to take up a position on the far side of the corridor while he
and the next security office took a post on this side. The four of them covered both directions of
the corridor while they waited for Lt. Trei and Commander Solice to exit the shaft.

Steven shrugged. "It was a good drill and exposed some holes in our SOP, I'm betting we will

(USS Raptor - Deck 3 - Corridor - SO- Ensign Larry ‘Lucky’ Day - 1034)

Once everyone was finally out of the access tube Solice took command of the team. She led
them down the corridor and Larry brought up the rear. He split his attention between what was
ahead of them and what might be behind them. Where were the intruders?

At an intersection she motioned for a team to go on ahead. Larry stayed with Solice and Dusty
and Ned, as well as Trei. She brought them together and whispered, “There is an access to the
bridge this way. We need to secure that access.”
Larry looked at his partners who all nodded, “We’ve got that, Commander.”

As they prepared to move forward, Solice held up a hand. “Did you hear that?”

Hey all stopped and Larry cocked his head, to listen more carefully. He could hear it too. It was
like a guttural trill. But he couldn’t just hear it. He could feel it. In his head. Solice took the
initiative and moved closer to the source of the sound. She looked around the corner and held
up two fingers. Larry nodded. He looked at Ned and nodded.

They both moved to the far side wall while Dusty moved in front of Solice. They inched forward,
each step taking him closer to the fear he was feeling. But he had already not existed once.
How much fear was anything capable of producing in him beyond that. Now focused he could
see the movement around the bend of the corridor.

Counting down with his fingers from three he knelt and rolled into the corridor firing. It was a
distraction. He knew his phaser, even at full strength would only serve to get the Xenolithes
attention. That was when Dusty and Ned jumped out. Three phasers at a single target. The
Xenolithe targeted fell back against the wall.

The second immediately attacked. With a single shot, fired its energy weapon, hitting Dusty
Bottoms. Dusty immediately disappeared in a transporter beam. He was, in a sense, dead. It
pushed past Day and Ned and attacked the group behind them. Trei immediately stepped
forward to block its path, with a Klingon knife in her hand. The Xenolathe reached out for her,
and as it touched her she also disappeared. The others all fired their concentrated weapons on
the last Xenolithe and it also disappeared.

Time to mourn their losses later, Larry headed to the access hatch. He opened the hatch and
looked back at Solice. “Access hatch has been secured, Commander.”

Quinna was bypassed by security officers doing their job. Little did they know that their job was

Day confirmed.

“Nice, Protect the Hatch and keep it sealed. Good job. We need to finish securing the Deck
and then work our way down.” Quinna moved to the hatch and inputted her security code. An
indication that it was secured.

Not too long it was reported that Deck 2 was secure. Quinna turned to Day, “We need to secure

“What next?” Day asked. He was beginning to wonder what happened to the other team.
Moments later their comm badges beeped. =^=All hands, Deck 2 is secure. I repeat, Deck 2 is

The others rounded a corner and Larry smiled a relieved smile. Solice turned to Day.

“We need to secure all access points and start heading down to the next floor that needs to be

“Deck 3 only has a handful of access panels and they’re all in this main corridor. Why don’t we
continue down this way and Ned and three men can go the other way and we meet at the turbo
lift juncture?”

“With Deck 2 secured, we have created a buffer between the intruders to the bridge. Our next

Lucky nodded to Ned and sent him and his contingent on their way. “Well the next level needing

When the Commander stopped at deck 4 Larry couldn’t help but wonder why. He stuck his head
out the hatch and looked at her quizzically.

“Can we get a better idea of where the intruders are on the deck?” she asked.

Larry looked up the ladder and made a hand gesture for the others to wait. He pulled out his
tricorder and began to scan the deck below. The range was limited by the ships functions but he
could not detect any unknown life forms.

“From here,” he said, “no ma’am. It could be that, partially, I have no idea what to look for.
Maybe the Xenolithe can’t be scanned. Some kind of natural dampening field. Unlike ship
sensors our tri orders don’t have the same sensitivity. Sorry.”

He could see that the news disappointed her. “I’ll go down to level five and see if I can get better
results.”

Before anything more could be said he was already moving down quickly. When he arrived at
deck 5 he looked at the tricorder again. This time with better results. He could detect three
unidentified life forms, he could only assume they were Xenolithe, congregating near sickbay.
There were no other life signs in the corridor, which concerned him. There were life signs in
sickbay, which was promising. And there was a level ten force field around the

Tapping his comm badge he reported his findings to Solice, and the others, who soon joined
him. As stealthily as he could he opened the hatch and the security team proceeded out first.
Setting up a similar strategy as before, Day and two others moved to the far side of the corridor,
while Ned and the last officer remained with Solice.

They made their way down the hallway until they couldn’t get any further. The strategy was a
risk, as they learned before, but they had few options. Lucky set his phaser on wide dispersion
and fired as he rolled out in the corridor. This caught the attention of all three Xenos. Two
turned to fire but he was already moving, adjusting his phaser to full power and narrow beamed.
The others began to fire, three on one.

The first invader was rocked and stepped back. The second bounced off the wall and came at
Solices team. They all fired at the same time. Lucky turned and fired at the creature's back,
and it dropped to the ground. The first recovered and dove towards Larry. Six phasers fired at
once, and the second Xenolithe disappeared. The third had disappeared. They all looked at
each other and Larry stood up. That was when it reappeared and its claws reached out for
Larry.

“Damn it,” Larry exclaimed then disappeared in a transporter beam. He could only hope that the
others had gotten the last one.

(USS Raptor - Deck 13- Main Shuttlebay - SO- Ensign Larry ‘Lucky’ Day - 1050)

Larry looked around the bay to find about twenty people there, all of whom, apparently, died at

Larry had opened the way to the deck. After he assessed the situation, Quinna headed down

(USS Raptor - Deck 1 - Bridge - SecO , Lieutenant Galk - 1055)

The klingon had been manning one of the stations as part of the bridge tactical team, there was
a lot of ground to cover in getting familiar with this new/old Federation ship class design and he
had put every available moment into becoming conversant with it.

The Raptor was a powerful vessel, there wasn't any doubt about that and he was impressed.
Sekal's comment about the political ramifications of this security officer hadn't been errantly
made, there were some security concerns (no pun intended) about having someone with as
much political clout within the empire having access to potentially sensitive, classified material at
the Lieutenant level. This didn't extend to command level data such as that available to the
security chief obviously or much less the captain but still ... merely having his knowledge of this
particular ships technical specifications could be the source of a damning leak, no government
outside of Federation member worlds was allowed this kind of look into starfleet technology. If
there had ever been any doubt as to how much Sekal trusted Galk this would have allayed it.

His head snapped around as T'Mur announced the boarding operation, his board was clear
which marked this an unannounced drill, the door to the ready room opened and the captain
promptly emerged and strode to where the security chief was stationed then took up a position
to observe, allowing her to continue the exercise without interference.

(Reply: T'Mur iyw)

Galk turned his head back to the board and began monitoring the operation. "Security teams
have been directed to the affected decks, clashes have already been reported on deck sixteen."
He entered the proper input and watched the tell turn green. "A security field has been
established outside of engineering as an additional defensive measure. Energizing fields
outside of the torpedo magazine, phaser control and primary computer core. Turbolift operation
has been interrupted above deck three and set to security override access elsewhere. Major
Murphy reports that marine units have been scrambled and are moving to engage."

T’Mur called the drill and Stev took a breath. He didn’t stop the work being done by his medical
staff. However he noted that security had dropped the containment field.

Most of the hard work with the “patients” had been done and no “life” had been lost. Still, he
wondered how this team would react o a death. He saw the door open and Quinna came in.

“All right, that’s enough,” he said and ended the simulated traumas. The patients disappeared
along with their holographic gore. The physical cleanup was easy. Now he would have to deal
with his staff. But not right now. He moved towards the CMO.

“Dr. Kyllee,” Quinna said. “Looks like we have a little more to our daily report. Coffee?”

“No thanks,” he replied, following her to the replicator.. He’d never really gotten the taste for the
human beverage. “But I would have mint tea.”

“How did the staff perform in the drill?” Quinna asked.

“They did as expected, mostly,” he said. “The two newer doctors had a bit of trouble dealing with
the more gruesome traumas. But they were able to pull it together. We didn’t lose anyone.”

“How are you doing, Stev?” Quinna asked, handing him his cup of steaming tea.
Stev held the cup up to his nose and took in the smell of the mint, and closed his eyes for a
moment. Then he looked at Quinna.

“Who, me?” he replied “I’m fantastic. This all has the air of the Rhyne on it. That feeling of
being in perpetual danger. But what can you do?” Then he took a good look at Quinna. “How
are you doing?”

"I Am ok. Ended up in the corridors during the drill. Ended up retaking Deck 2." Quinna
reported. "I will check the med logs in a few, for the report."

“I’ve already got that covered,” Stev said. “Unless you’re looking for something to do.”

"What is needed for the next drill?" Quinna asked. "Or God forbid in the actual event of a real
invasion."

“To be honest,” he said, “I need another set of calm hands. If this were the real thing I’m worried
how they’ll hold up.“ He nodded towards the staff as they cleaned and restocked. They all
seemed the picture of calm and collectedness. “Anything worse than what I devised for this one
might send someone over the edge.”

He turned and looked into Quinna’s eyes, “We need you.”

Quinna was just starting to feel a bit normal. But she was not ready for this. But if she was
honest with herself, she was still in limbo. “I am not sure if I am ready.” she paused a bit, “With
that being said, When push comes to shove, I’ll do what I have to do.”

Stev nodded. He didn’t want to push Quinna back into a position she wasn’t ready for. But he
also knew that the medical staff drew emotional strength from her. Much more than they did
from him. He also knew that she needed to feel needed.

“Maybe you can help out a little here and there,” he said. “Just being a presence in sickbay.”

“Ok. I can take alpha back in sickbay and gamma on the bridge. It should help you get more
rest as well.” Quinna just conceded.

Stev chuckled, “There’s no middle ground for you is there? Maybe we can both be here for the
alpha shift. I know how important it i for you to get your command training in. Even if I do think
it’s a damn waste of a great doctor. But it’s what you want.”

“Why not go and get some rest. I can deal with sickbay for now.” Quinna said. “I have to write
reports anyway.”

“Let me do the report for the drill and I could use a nap before T’Mur’s debrief. Those can be a
little… dry.”

He had worked at avoiding a derogatory term. He had no love of tedious red tape.

“That is ok. I can do the reports. You should take off and have a little fun.” Quinna took a long
sip of her coffee. “Who knows when there will be time, again.”
Stev couldn’t help himself but laugh. Quinna had been trying to convo him to have “fun” almost
since the met. “Fun? Have we met? This…” he gestured around the sickbay, “is what I do for
fun. You go have fun.”

“Fun in not in my vocabulary anymore. But anyway… We should plan to have multi shift drills.
And vary the duty roster. Put everyone on shift rotations. That way everyone is prepared at any
time.”

“It’s almost like being an intern again,” Stev commented. “72 hours shifts. Stealing cat naps
whenever and wherever you can. Those were the days.” His voice dropped with sarcasm.
“That’s how my wife and I met.”

As quick as it came the happy memory soured and his smile disappeared. Even after all this
time the pain was still too much.

“You have a man who loves you, Quinna Solice. And he is still here.” He took the PADD from
her hand. “Go find him and remind yourself what fun is. Before it’s too late.”

If looks could kill, then Stev would have been a dead man. But Quinna took a deep breath
before she talked to Stev again. She did not want to convey a ‘What the hell’ feeling. “Michael
and I are working on things at our own pace.”

Stev had stared down worse looks. Quinna knew he was a man who spoke his mind, no matter
what. He didn’t care if it wasn’t popular. However, she should also know that speaks from his
heart with care and love. He sighed.

“I hope you have the time for that,” was all he said and handed her back her PADD.

“I will make the time. I still have 8 hours where I am not on duty.” Quinna said, “Besides This is
what Starlfleet expects of me.”

Stev leaned into Quinna, looking conspiratorial, and said softly, “Screw Starfleet. You also
deserve to be happy. That’s how the fleet keeps the best people.”

Quinna thought about it. “Look, I just have personal issues that I need to work out. Yes, I can
be more attentive to Michael, but you know as well as I do that once we have come back on this
ship, we have hit the ground running.”

“That’s true,” Stev had to agree. “I just don’t want you to miss out.” He left the comment
hanging.

“You know, you have mentioned about Michael and me. What about you? Maybe you should
let someone in with you.” Quinna started, “Don’t you miss being intimate with someone?”

The sudden change of subject took the Bajoran by surprise. However it was a fair question.
“Are you making me an offer, Doctor Solice?” A wry smile crossed his face, then he looked a
little more serious. “There are times that I wake up and still feel Linda’s body next to mine.
Apparently there are emotional ghost sensations as well, like when a patient has a limb
amputated. It will take me a moment of feeling around in my bed to realize that it isn’t real.”
He paused for a moment as he felt his emotions begin to well up. Then he took a deep breath.
“No, I’m not ready for that. Not yet, anyway. I’m afraid that everyone I would be with would be a
comparison, and that’s not fair to them. And I’m not one to have… casual dalliances, if you
know what I mean.”

“Intamacy is not always physical.” Quinna mentioned, “That is of course you feel like you can
never love and let someone in again.”

“No,” he said, “my faith in the Prophets may be shot, but I still believe that love is as much an
act of fate as it is of faith. The right person will come along when I least expect it.”

“During our epidemic, you seemed rather obsessed to with Tavay. Though obsessed may not
be the right word. You seemed especially dedicated to her than others.”

Stev put his face in his palm and shook his head. He should have known that was going to
come back to bite him later.

“That was complete innocent based on a comment made by the captain. We both joked about
being married. No, there was nothing serious between us. At least I hope she saw it that way.
Not that I don’t find her attractive. I could spend time with her, but nothing more, as you put it,
intimate.” He paused then looked at Quinna, “Why? Did she say something?”

“No, I have not really talked to her. I just based it on the observations.” Quinna said. “And a
one time observation at that. Forget I ever said anything.”

Kyllee knew better than to believe that for a moment. Quinna was scheming. He just didn’t know
how. He just shook his head. Quinna was becoming the little sister he never had. “Yeahhhhh,”
was all he could say.

“Maybe I will get with Michael about a Beta Shift date. But for now, maybe you should get some
rest. We can work on the logistics of sickbay later. Take the rest of the day off.”

“Right after I do this report for T’Mur,” he said. “The last thing I need is a Vulcan on my back.”

(USS Raptor - Deck 17 – Recreation Room - Marine - 2LT Charles Temerity - 1530)
All the platoon leaders and platoon sergeants sat in plush lounge chairs that were arranged in a
circle with drinks in hand. The room looked as if it had been intended to function like a 17th
century social club with card tables, and billiard tables. Gentlemen’s games his mother had
referred to those as.

Temerity sat in one of the lounge chairs, almost as if it were a seat of power, and he was a
member of an ancient war council. He figured in many ways he had become such. The odd
thing was, he was not the senior ranking Marine officer, and yet the others had followed him. It
reminded him of something a Sergeant Major had told him when he was just a Corporal, “Rank
has nothing to do with Leadership ability.” With the ‘Myrmidon’ detachment he had taken the
lead at his Major’s behest. Now with this company of Marines, he is again taking the lead. This
was not intended to think or speak any ill will of Major Murphy. In fact, Charles respected the
man and appreciated that the man could delegate tasks without micromanaging. A rare quality
in modern commanders, Charles reflected.

The subject of discussion; the A.A.R. (After Action Review) of the day’s earlier battle drill. “Yes,
most of us are combat veterans, but with only one or two exceptions, we all had superior
numbers, better equipment, and actual battlefields.” First Lieutenant Erco Okeme had declared.
Before she continued, “But simply as a matter of official record, Temerity has never been in
combat.” And then turned to Charles and finished with, “No offence, Chuck, but I don’t think you
should be the one calling the shots if we get boarded.”

Charles held up a finger as he responded to the Bajorian’s comment, “Other than myself, who in
this circle has ANY actual, practical close quarters combat experience?” Two NCOs raised their
hands. “And who did it against superior numbers and weaponry?” The two NCOs lowered their
hands. “Erco, I have and continued to do so up until I got recalled to duty. If you question my
qualifications, M’Melar has perused my files along with the court-martial transcript.”

“We all know that the only reason Murphy gave the lead to you was because you were with him
aboard the Illuminar.” Erco declared as she sipped on her drink as if she had a decisive victory.

“That is the reason why in the beginning, because I was the detachment XO. None of you had
arrived yet and we were still on the Illuminar when we started putting things together. After the
company had been assembled Murphy held a meeting that we all attended. Do you remember?”
Everyone nodded agreement before Temerity continued, “If you recall, after he explained why
M’Melar and Dave were not to call the shots; Murphy asked you to take charge of this because
you were the senior ranking line platoon leader. You never gave him a definitive answer. After
a week of you not saying ‘Yes’, he told me that I would retain authority and responsibility
because I was the next in line.” Charles explained.

The Bajorian would not let up on the topic, “Well why weren’t either of them put in charge?” she
exclaimed.

M’Melar retorted “What Dave and I don’t have enough on our plate to get you what you need to
succeed?” Looking at Erco in disgust.

Then David Poole chimed in, “Look, the major isn’t one to give orders or commands just for the
sake of doing so. He wants people in positions that want to be in those positions and are willing
to take the responsibility for what goes wrong in addition to the willingness to accept authority to
take the risk. Chuck has that kind of experience as a freighter captain, and for what he did on,
and because of Grayson.”
Then a new voice chimed in, “Chuck, I’ll agree that you may suck as a Soldier and as a Marine,
but you are one hell of a leader.” Staff Sergeant Lilith Morgan, the platoon sergeant for Erco’s
platoon, said with a smirk and Charles simply smiled. “But you got us trained, you figured out
ways for us to survive, you not only listened to what officers and NCOs had to say but the junior
enlisted as well. And you incorporated all that was said into an effective battle plan along with
your own unorthodox experience.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, Lilith.” He then focused his attention on Erco and declared,
“Erco, do not let your bruised ego jeopardize this mission. Is that understood?” he finished in a
menacing tone of voice. Erco’s eyes got big as she swallowed, and with short jerks of her head
nodded in understanding. Suddenly, Temerity’s tone of voice changed again into a lighter kinder
tone, “Good. And by the way, great idea you had during the drill about the anti-personnel mines
in the Jefferies tubes around the engine room. Great Job.”

It had been a long day and Quinna was happy to have time with Michael. She needed this.
They needed this. The two of them entered the Recreation Room. Being with others and not
sequestered in their quarters was a good step. It was time.

“I am glad we are doing this, Thank you,” Quinna said.

(Reply Weston)

“Hopefully it will be eventful,” Quinna added. But any time with Michael was eventful.

As they entered the door, Quinna heard, “Good. And by the way, great idea you had during the
drill about the anti-personnel mines in the Jefferies tubes around the engine room. Great Job.”

“Sounds like a story there,” Quinna commented as they walked in.

(Reply Temerity, Weston)

“So what happened on your end during the drill?” Quinna asked. Michael and Quinna did not
have a chance to share their stories yet.

As they stepped into the marine lounge Michael looked around uneasily. He was a little torn,
excited at the prospect that Quinna was finally feeling well enough to be seen in public again,
with him, and concerned at her choice of venue for her outing. If there was one person that the
marines seemed to detest even more than T’Mur’s security forces, it was him.
“I am glad we are doing this, Thank you,” Quinna said.

Michael slipped his arm around Quinna’s waist and smiled into her face, not letting any sign of
his wariness through, “Me too. Interesting choice you made here.”

He looked around to see a lounge that seemed incongruous to what he believed about marines.
This was not the spartan lounge he had expected. It was, in fact, quite opulent. There were
very comfortable, and soft, seats set up in circles, around the room. Most were filled with
marines laughing and talking.

“Hopefully it will be eventful,” Quinna said.

“Hopefully not too eventful,” Michael added with a chuckle.

Then Michael heard a familiar voice in the crowd, “Great idea you had during the drill about the
anti-personnel mines in the Jefferies tubes around the engine room. Great Job.”

Quinna went over to Temerity and stopped beside him saying, “Sounds like a story there.”

Michael nodded, “Indeed. An interesting idea. Not sure if the Xeno’s would think to go through
the Jeffries but better safe than sorry.” He was trying to give the marines some credit for the
idea, although he, personally, was certain that such a move would only limit the movement of
the Raptor’s crew. But he wasn’t going to say that out loud.

(Reply Temerity)

“So what happened on your end during the drill?” Quinna asked.

Michael was interested to hear this story, hoping that somehow there could be a bridge between
the marines and SFI.

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, Lilith.” He then focused his attention on Erco and declared,
“Erco, do not let your bruised ego jeopardize this mission. Is that understood?” he finished in a
menacing tone of voice. Erco’s eyes got big as she swallowed, and with short jerks of her head

in the Jefferies tubes around the engine room. Great Job.”

The group turned to face the recognizable voice of the Chief Medical Officer saying, “Sounds
like a story there.”

Her companion, Weston nodded, “Indeed. An interesting idea. Not sure if the Xeno’s would
think to go through the Jeffries but better safe than sorry.”
“During the action, we had a smidgen of a SNAFU. One of the Enginemen popped out of a
large Jefferies tube and a Xeno charged into the tube. Erco there ran it down and killed it. She
then suggested we mine the tubes just in case.” Charles explained.

“So, what happened on your end during the drill?” Quinna asked.

The Marines all looked at each other before S’Ila chimed in, “Lets get a couple of chairs and
drinks for our guests.”

(Reply: Solace, Weston)

Charles started, “We were on this deck when the alarm sounded. We then deployed platoons to
different strategic locations on Deck 16 and proceeded to sweep and clear working toward the
Engine Room. Once control points were established and we controlled the lifts things were
starting to come together.”

After a brief pause, he continued, “We used the drill to test the effectiveness of our shotguns
and pistols to see how badly we would damage the bulkheads. We found that with high
powered hollow-point 12-gauge, and .357 magnum ammunition, the bulkheads are damn
strong. Worst case, the rounds left good sized dents, but didn’t puncture anything besides flesh,
and consoles.”

(Reply: Any)

“Sorry, I got sidetracked. Anyway, we were on the verge of finishing off the last of the Xeno’s on
Deck 16 when the drill ended.” Looking back and forth from Weston to Solace. “How about on
y’all’s end of the drill?”

(Reply: Solace, Weston)

As Charles listened to them speak, he also looked at his fellow Marines and then returned his
attention to Michael and Quinna. He held no ill-will toward either of their two guests and hoped
they would again call upon the Marine’s hospitality within the Recreation Room. Charles did
have to be careful not to lump Michael with Hammons even though both are SFI affiliated.

Quinna stood there and listened to part of the story.
The Marines all looked at each other before S’Ila chimed in, “Let's get a couple of chairs and
drinks for our guests.”
Quinna let out a small smile, “Bring it.”

“I did not know we had projectile weapons onboard,” Quinna said thinking about Luma, this ship
was not a living ship.

“Sorry, I got sidetracked. Anyway, we were on the verge of finishing off the last of the Xeno’s on
Deck 16 when the drill ended.” Looking back and forth from Weston to Solace. “How about on
y’all’s end of the drill?”

“I was actually caught in the turbo-lift. Exited deck three, gathered the security team, and retook
deck two creating a barrier with the bridge. We were on our way down to deck 5 when things
ended.
(Reply: Temerity, Weston)

“I have to commend you on your creativity. I was unaware that projectile weapons were brought
onboard. I was under the impression that they had been from use but then I also know the
Marines have a different guideline. I should be more familiar with that.”

(Reply: Temerity, Weston)

“Remember this is a rental. Would not want to put dents in the walls. This is also a living ship.
We should check on the ship herself and see if she felt the dents.
