Fresh out of the Academy, he had been sent to Teller Prime for more training and experience. Having spent his life in space, he had not spent much time on planets. Especially since the freighter trolled the lesser-known planets, bringing necessary supplies to these places. Four years on Earth at the Academy was the longest he had stayed in one place. He learned engineering from his father, Korgath, son of Togan, of the house K’Toh-maag. He learned order from his mother, Lydia. The Academy helped him figure out his place in the universe, and how he could marry those skills. He’d spent the last two years on Tellar Prime, his first assignment out of the academy. He didn’t like the cold of the Tellarites home world. But he finally had transfer orders. He was on the next shuttle to the USS Illuminar, where he’d join the operations department. With his kit slung over his shoulder and a large held in his left hand, he entered the shuttle and took a seat, looking around at the other officers slated to transfer to the Illuminar. He’d reviewed the available information on the Bellerophon variant that the Illuminar was based on, as well as some of the mission logs. At least he’d be back in space, where he belonged, and away from this cold planet. Torek closed his eyes and let the pilots do their job and in a few hours, the shuttle docked with his new assignment. As he left the shuttle, a yeoman with a PADD assigned him to his quarters and a time to report to the Captain. (posted by Tim) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 5 holodeck – Pilot Ensign Pihi ‘Kestral’ Piripi -0730) The alarm went off at 0530 but Pihi ignored it, finally getting out of bed at 7 am. Since she had returned from the other universe, dimension, whatever it was she wasn’t too sure, she’d been having headaches and strange dreams. Usually a good sleeper, these dreams had been disrupting her rest cycle. She was now in the holodeck, trying to work out her demons with an Anbo-jyutsu stick. It was similar to the Taiaha, the traditional spear/staff like weapon of her people. She actually had a bit of an advantage in Anbo-jyutsu because of her blindness. She was used to moving around and using echolocation without her visor, and startled more than one opponent in the ring. The bout with the holograms was not the same as with a real opponent. But the bruises were real. The blows did hurt, and did remind her to not be so cocky. The timer sounded, ending the last round of the match. Sweat dripped off her face. Removing the mask, she moved of the mat to retrieve her VISOR. Clipping into place, she spoke, “Computer, end program.” The Anbo-jyutsu dojo disappeared, replaced by the gridlines of the holodeck. She took her towel and wiped her face and neck. Looking at the arch she started to leave, carrying her stick in her left hand as her stomach growled reminding her to eat. (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess - Pilot Ensign Pihi ‘Kestral Piripi – 0830) Pihi entered the Mess. She wasn’t on duty for a while, so after a quick shower and change, she was ready to eat. She still had not made any friends on the ship, and more likely blew it after the episode on Deep Space 4, so she found a quiet corner to herself, staring out the window, watching the various particles pass by. The server brought her breakfast to the table. A pot of tea, some orange juice and a bowl of granola with yogurt. She noticed he also placed a muffin on her table. “Fresh made by the cook, with real berries,” he said as he smiled at her. “Thank you,” she said as she poured her tea. (reply any if you want breakfast) (Posted by Pippa) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> USS Illuminar - Deck 2 - Officers Mess - SPA - LT Ariel Trei - 0831) Ariel usually went to the Prancing Pony for breakfast but decided to try the officers mess hall today. She saw Ensign Pirpi sitting at a table alone. The girls outing on Deep Space 4 was rough but that won't stop her to keep trying to interact with her. She saw Pirpi had a fresh muffin on her plate. The muffins are excellent. She took a seat across from Pirpi. Ariel ordered her own little pot of Earl Gray not to intrude on Pirpi's blend of tea she likes. Ariel ordered some pancakes with a nice strawberry syrup. She also ordered bacon and eggs. She did not have a muffin at this time but opted for a jelly donut instead. She took a sip of her Earl Gray "How are you doing Pihi? (Reply Pirpi) (Posted by Edward ) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess – Pilot Ensign Pihi ‘Kestral’ Piripi – 0835) Pihi heard footsteps approaching and looked up. It was Lieutenant Trei, who she met on Deep Space 4. Not her finest hour, she had to admit. The woman looked at the meal that the security officer ordered. Her headache returned at the smell of the bacon. Pihi sipped her tea and looked up when Trei asked, “How are you doing Pihi?” Putting her cup down, she forced a smile, “I am cleared for duty,” she said. “Otherwise I am fine,” she lied. “How are you doing? You missed our little adventure/predicament. It wasn’t fun. How did you occupy yourself?” (Reply Trei) (Posted by Pippa) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess - SPA - LT Ariel Trei - 0836) The tone of Pirpi's response reminded Ariel of how hard it was to deal with Pirpi. She put that aside for now and tried to respond calmly. Much of what happened is classified but she can give her an overview. "I worked with Agent Weston on the station. Something in the water I drank left me temporarily without my psionic abilities. It was difficult operating like that but I managed to get the job done. I understand you are working on becoming the helmsman for the Illuminar how is that going?" (Reply Pirpi) (Posted by Edward) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess Pilot Ensign Pihi Piripi – 0840) “Are you a secret agent?” Pihi asked. Leaning in, she asked “Section 31?” shs said in a conspiral tone. Sitting back, “Or you can’t tell me because it’s classified. You’d have to kill me if you told me,” she chuckled. “Your work honestly sounds more exciting. A chemical in the water? That must have been scary. I know if I am without my VISOR, it’s unnerving. I mean, I didn’t get it till I was 5, so I learned a lot of ways to compensate, but still now, I see so much. The universe is so beautiful when you sit and look.” She sipped her tea, “I’ve been flying since I was a teenager. My grandfather taught me, it was a way to free myself from the ground. Right now I am trying to learn the unique characteristics of the ship. Every ship has its quirks, and a good pilot knows what those are.” “How long have you been on the ship?” (reply Trei) (Posted by Pippa) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess SPA LT Ariel Trei - 08.41) Ariel cracked a smile at the old spy line "If I tell you I have to kill you." That line is partially true but not really. The less divulged the more safe the one being divulged to will be for their own sake. She technically was not a secret agent. Weston was most likely a secret agent. So in that sense working with Weston could be perceived that she is but she isn't. She basically monitors cameras all around the ship and most of that is classified so in that sense Pirpi is right. She can't tell her about any of that. "Technically no. I am not a secret agent but when I work with Agent Weston I most likely am. I monitor the cameras all around the ship. That is classified so read into that what you will. I have been with the Illuminar since it launched about a year ago. Are you enjoying your muffin? They are excellent." (Reply Pirpi) (Posted by Edward) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess – Pilot Ensign Pihi ‘Kestral’ Piripi -0845) Lieutenant Trei mentioned she watched cameras around the ship before telling her it was classified. Why would one monitor cameras, didn’t the ship have a security computer program to do that. She shrugged, above her pay grade. “I have been with the Illuminar since it launched about a year ago. Are you enjoying your muffin? They are excellent,” the woman said. Pihi was getting confused by the conversation. “This is my first posting so I am learning everything they didn’t teach at the Academy,” she said, “so are there any traditions that the Illuminar crew have that a newly posted ensign should know about?” (Reply Trei) (Posted by Pippa) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess SPA LT Ariel Trei - 0846) She was asked if there were any traditions on the ship to know about. There really wasn't any just to respect the chain of power and such. Ariel Liked to sing Karaoke but suspected that Pirpi did not share that interest. It would be good to get her to loosen up but Ariel did not know what would do that for her. "There are no traditions that I know of. I mainly follow the Betazoid traditions. You can do what you wish in that regard. I follow some of the Klingon traditions too. Perhaps we car spar together." (Reply Pirpi) (Posted by Edward) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Iluminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess Pilot Ensign Pihi ‘Kestral’ Piripi – 0850) Ariel noted there were no specific traditions on the ship before going off on her following Betazoid and Klingon traditions. “I am sorry, perhaps I misspoke. I am curious if there are Illuminar specific activities or things that are part of what makes the ship unique? For example, I see lots of roses around the ship. Why? “ she asked. “Does the Captain hold an officers mess? What about departments? Do they all participate in some activity together? That is what I am curious about.” “As for sparing, I do participate in Anbo-jyutsu. It was the only martial art that my lack of sight was not a detriment. Mostly I prefer yoga and tai chi. Running for endurance, since swimming wrecks havoc on the VISOR. What sort of sparing do you do?” (Reply Trei) (Posted by Pippa) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Iluminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess SPA LT Ariel Trei - 0851) She didn't know of any specific activities on the ship. The roses in the ship she didn't have an answer for. As far as places where the officers eat their meals, she understood Captain Sekal usually ate in the officers mess. Ariel really didn't have a specific style of martial art she practiced. It was more a mix of hand to hand fighting. "There are no specific department activities that I know of. I don't really practice a specific martial art. It is more a mix of hand to hand fighting styles. The roses are a mystery to me as well. My guess is it has something to do with Luma. I presume you have met Luma." (Reply Pirpi) (Posted by Edward) Mission: Soliloquy Day: 9 Stardate: 2446.07.13 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar - Deck 2 - Officer’s Mess - CSRD - Lt. Bohb - 0852) The good news about being the chief of a department that has a very small roster is that Bohb could eat whenever he needed. His need rarely coincided with the ship's routine schedules. He liked to eat in a more relatively private setting so he often waited until after the shift change at 0800. Then, only the stragglers were left behind and they usually left him to his meal. However, today he felt the urge for some company. He had gotten his greens and his fruit bowl and looked around to see Ariel Trei, sitting with a new crewman he didn’t know. What he did notice was that she was wearing a visor over her eyes, indicating that she was, most likely, blind. It was odd to see such a device in a time when cloned replacements and more natural looking prosthetics were available. His curiosity was peaked and the Magillan made his way over to the table. “Good morning, ladies,” he said with his most polite but gruff voice. “May I join you?” (reply Trei, Piripi) “Ariel, it is wonderful to see you,” he bellowed and struck Trei roughly on the shoulder then mussed at her hair. The big chimpanzee looking Magillan looked over at the new person and asked, “And who is your friend?” (reply Trei, Piripi) “I hope you don’t mind,” he said as he picked up a piece of leafy lettuce and stuffed it into his mouth. Bohb was very self conscious about people watching him eat. They often thought it would be like watching the gorillas at a zoo eating, but he was actually quite dainty with it. He smiled and made a yummy sound. “I am Bohb,” he said, striking his own chest. “I am the chief of the research and development department here on the Illuminar. It is a genuine pleasure to meet you.” He held out his right hand, palm open and facing up. (reply Piripi) (posted by Al Muir) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess – Pilot Ensign Pihi ‘Kestral’ Piripi - 0855) Piri looked up and a Gorilla in a Uniform approached the table. There were Lieutenants pips on the collar. “Good morning, ladies. May I join you,” he said. Pihi was intrigued. It was never a dull moment in Star Fleet. The creature sat down “Ariel, it is wonderful to see you. And who is your friend?” he asked. “This is Ensign Piripi. She is learning to be the helmsman for the ship. I will let her talk about herself,” Trei said. He started eating some lettuce, “I hope you do not mind.” Pihi shrugged. “It doesn’t bother me.” She sipped her tea as she scanned the newcomer to learn his aura, for lack of better word. . “I am Bohb. I am the chief of the research and development department here on the Illuminar. It is a genuine pleasure to meet you.” He held out his right hand, palm open and facing up. “I am Kestral, “ she replied, placing her hand up like his. It was comical the size difference between the two hands. “What does the chief of research and development do?” she asked. (Reply Bohb). (Posted by Pippa) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar - Deck 2 - Officer’s Mess - CSRD - Lt. Bohb - 0856) “I am Kestral, “ the woman said, smiling. “What does the chief of research and development do?” she asked. Bohb returned the smile and laughed loudly, “Oh little bit of everything. My team and I create and test new technology that we might use on the ship. I’ve done some work with the personal security fields, or the use of quantum batteries in some of our equipment. I know it sounds dull but it’s quite fascinating, actually.” (reply Piripi) He stopped eating and stared at the woman’s face. “Might I ask you a personal question?” (reply Piripi) “That visor,” he off handily motioned at the device with a piece of melon before putting it in his mouth, “is there a reason you wear it rather than something that more advanced. With today’s technology I would think that implant prosthetics or even bio-engineered nanotechnology eyes would be far more efficient.” He paused for a moment then added, “I don’t mean to be rude. I still don’t get all the human body language cues.” (reply Piripi) (posted by Al Muir) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess – Pilot Ensign Pihi ‘Kestral’ Piripi – 0900) Pihi noticed that Lieutenant Pex had entered the mess. She had been avoiding him since they were rescued from the shuttle. He had done some brilliant engineering that helped them get rescued, but it had rendered her unconscious, and she didn’t want him to feel guilt. “Good morning. May I join you three, please?” he asked. Pihi pointed to the open seat next to her. “Of course, Lieutenant,” she said. “Are you only having tea this morning? That hardly seems enough. You need a good traditional New Zealand fry up. Assuming you are not averse to meat.” “Myself, I prefer something less heavy before shifts, and save the heavy meal for dinner,” she continued, unusually animated. (Reply Pex, Bohb, Trei) (Posted by Pippa) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess SPA LT Ariel Trei - 0901) Ariel didn't know of this new Zealand fry up but she did love meat so she is always game to try new things. She mainly likes cheeseburgers but will have steak from time to time medium well. Her Klingon side would probably like the steak rare but her Betazoid side prefers it cooked. She imagined herself as a werewolf killing a deer and eating it on the spot. That kind of savage behavior was unsettling but she could see some of her Klingon friends do something similar to that. "I would like to try a New Zealand fry up sometime. It sounds good." He slid the chair back and slid his tall form into it, careful not to bump his legs into anyone. He motioned to his tea as he smiled at Kestral. "I don't know what consists of a 'New Zealand fry up', but I have no aversion to meat. If you're offering, I would love to take you up on it. But, yes, just tea for the moment. I've been up for hours working and just needed a break." Tegian motioned to Bohb. "I'm afraid my mentor there has installed some work habits that have me arising way too early and staying way too late. And constantly tinkering to make things better." "Which is why it's fortuitous that both of you are here. Ensign Piripi, I've been studying your VISOR schematics and your implants and I understand now what happened back in the shuttle. There was nothing I could have done to prevent it, but if you still want to continue to wear a VISOR and not change to a different technology, I've come up with some additional designs that will never put you in harm's way again." "This would totally be your choice and I would first have Lieutenant Bohb here review all the schematics and study your implants to understand what is required. But, it's possible to provide you a wider spectrum and greater distance with less energy requirements than the current model you're using. The VISOR would also be much smaller than your current one." I do have the replicator recipe with my gear. Perhaps in the coming days.” Tegian spoke up again, " Ensign Piripi, I've been studying your VISOR schematics and your implants and I understand now what happened back in the shuttle. Pihi chuckled, “I was born without an optic nerve and most of the current technologies require an optic nerve to connect to. I don’t understand what the doctors did, but this one works just fine. I really appreciate you looking into it, and your designs, but for now, I’d rather not be trying to relearn now to ‘see’ as it were. Bohb - 0906) Before “Kestrel” could answer his question about her prosthetic Tegian Pex arrived and garnered everyone’s attention. He had had conversations with Tegian about the woman across from him. However he was disappointed that his inquiry went unanswered. “Good morning. May I join you three, please?” Tegian asked. “Of course, Lieutenant,” Piripi replied, indicating the seat beside her. Bohb couldn’t help but be amused at the friendship that had already started to form between them. They began to talk about food, and Bohb politely followed along as he ate his own breakfast. Then Pex changed the tact of the conversation. “Ensign Piripi,” the Trill began, “I've been studying your VISOR schematics and your implants and I understand now what happened back in the shuttle. There was nothing I could have done to prevent it, but if you still want to continue to wear a VISOR and not change to a different technology, I've come up with some additional designs that will never put you in harm's way again.” He paused for only a moment before continuing, “This would totally be your choice and I would first have Lieutenant Bohb here review all the schematics and study your implants to understand what is required. Then he added that everything would be checked over by Dr. Solace. Pihi chuckled and explained that she had been born without an optic nerve and that added complications with the connections to any other device. “I really appreciate you looking into it,’ she said, “and your designs, but for now, I’d rather not be trying to relearn now to ‘see’ as it were. Besides, I think this one goes with my tattoo, don’t. you?” Bohb frowned at her acceptance of her “fate”, as it were. To some people, he had come to realize, the idea of something new, or change, was difficult. As for her last statement… he did not want to insult a new friend, even by accident. Looked like the lessons on cultural sensitivity were paying off. He shrugged, “I would still like to have a look at the device and see what can be done. If for no other reason, than to be able to replicate another if it became necessary. As for how it looks, I personally enjoy looking at your tattoos. They are intriguing, with or without a visor.” Then he looked over at Tegian and tried to wink at him, “Perhaps you and Tegian can discuss the matter further over dinner some time?” (reply Piripi, Pex) (posted by Al Muir) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officers Mess – CEO - Lieutenant Jg Tegian Pex - 0907) The very attractive Ensign enticed him further over a possible dinner meal by listing the ingredients for a New Zealand Fry Up. “Bacon, eggs, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, and toast. None of that black pudding or baked beans the Pom’s like so much,” she said. “You can have normal bread, but it’s best with a Maori fry bread, in my opinion.” She told the table. “I’m not much of a cook, my mum didn’t let me in the kitchen, and with replicators, it’s a bit easier. I do have the replicator recipe with my gear. Perhaps in the coming days.” Tegian nodded. "If that's an offer, Ensign, then I accept." Tegian's pitch for a change in her VISOR, however, didn't go as he had hoped. If for no other reason, than to be able to replicate another if it became necessary. As for how it looks, I personally enjoy looking at your tattoos. They are intriguing, with or without a visor.” "I'll have my proposals sent to you, Lieutenant. Thank you," he replied to the Magillan. Tegian nodded, to both Bohb and Piripi, noting how the tattoo melded perfectly with her VISOR. "I apologize that I hadn't noticed." He spent a long time studying her face closer before he realized what he was doing and cleared his throat in embarrassment. Continuing, he said, "Any newer models could be of the same size. As far as needing to relearn to see, has that been a problem in the past?" he asked with some concern. "I worry because if this VISOR gets damaged, I will need to repair it and I want you to have something to use. So, perhaps a compromise? A backup VISOR? Same spectrum, distance and size as your current one, but with a far less energy draw. And you'll have backups in case anything happens to the one you're wearing. With all the additional safety precautions so there's no repeat of what occurred on the shuttle." Sekal and his officers were once again in their accustomed places, Verin sat to his right while Commander Solice and Lieutenant Commander T'Mur were to his left. T'Mur was at the tactical board scrutinizing the transfer of personnel while Quinna sat beside the captain. There was still much left to do even beyond bringing over Illuminar's crew since Luma had to be returned as well. Would Luma even want to return to Illuminar? Her bond with the Raptor had been a success but she had also missed her roses as he had been often reminded. He tilted his head at the memory. “Ensign Torek, requesting permission to come onto the bridge." Not that Steven had anything against Illuminar, she was just ... smaller. Cozy, yes. Comfortable, yes but after working and living on the Inquiry class he couldn't help but feel closed in a bit. The corridors were shorter, the work spaces felt miniscule even though they really weren't. Illuminar wasn't tiny by any means but she wasn't a major capital ship either. He stood up and stretched which caught Carol Lannis' attention, she was sitting at what they referred to as the "call desk" which was a throwback to an earlier age since it was the central security operations control work station. Not to be confused with the work station the second officer manned on the bridge which also served a tactical purpose. T'Mur could monitor security operations and issue orders but anything that wasn't a direct order, security chief to crewman was handled here along with patrols and check points. Not to mention guarding the armory and brig. "Tired already Hammons?" "No, maybe a little too comfortable. With very few exceptions we are back with the smaller old crew which is very familiar. Heck! The crew complement is only a third of what was on the Raptor. Illuminar is a great lady but I'm beginning to wonder if we've outgrown her." Carol got a guarded look. "Careful what you say Hammons, someone might take exception to that." Steven laughed. "She isn't aboard yet and would know I didn't direct that at her. Hmm, she might get pouty though since her roses are here." Carol consulted the roster. "Another hour and a half it looks like then we can look forward to having her cavort around the ship again." "I'm sure she will be squee'ing about the flowers, get ready for singing and music on the intercoms." Hammons chuckled. "Boyles wanted to talk with you before you get off shift." "Sure thing." Hammons turned to move out just as Galk walked in. "Lieutenant! Good to see you." "Hammons." Galk rumbled as he stopped. "I was just about to make a round of decks one and two. Are you otherwise busy?" "Nope!" Steven lightly slapped his sidearm. "I'm good to go." "Good." Galk turned and walked ahead as they left the control area. "Glad to be back home Lieutenant?" Galk glanced back at him. "It is good to be home." "Wouldn’t you rather be on a big warship?" Steven's tone was wheedling. The klingon stopped and turned to the human with a guarded look. "You are joking, yes? Illuminar destroyed three heavily armed klingon warships, have you forgotten? It is respected within the empire for its exploits and its warriors are likewise respected. The Raptor showed its teeth against the xenolithe but such a ship is expected to crush and reign. This ship enjoys almost mythical status among my people. Do I miss the larger complement of warriors aboard the Raptor? Yes. But make no mistake, this ship has earned its status." Steven held his hands up before him. "I understand sir, thanks for putting it into perspective." Galk made a noise. "I find your use of the word sir to be mocking." "How well you know me." Hammons snickered. "Shall we continue from where I rudely changed the subject?" Galk growled then turned and walked away, a rumbling laugh following in his wake as he stepped into the turbolift. All that was left was to make sure all of the crew that was leaving the Illuminar had vacated. He had started at the bottom of the ship and was going deck by deck to the top. Suddenly the turbolift halted at deck 14 and two security officers stepped on the lift. One he knew by name and his service record, but had never met. The other he was very familiar with. Galk, son of Jos. He stood up a little taller and nodded to the Klingon, “Galk.” The Klingon had been fighting a smile as he stepped into the lift but at the sound of the voice he spun to face the other. The look he gave him was respectful. "Commander. I am pleased to meet you outside of battle." “I was unaware that you were back on the Illuminar,” Karnovskyy stated. “You have come back to the fleet?” "Yes, I returned recently." Galk snapped a salute. "That's high praise from the Lieutenant." Hammons held the salute until he was noticed. "This big brute doesn't respect many he's crossed blades with so to speak. Steven Hammons, Chief Petty Officer at your service sir." Karnovskyy returned the salute and then smiled, offering his hand, “Chief. I am familiar with your service record. If you are a friend of Galk, then consider yourself a friend of Sasha Karnovskyy.” "Excellent. I love having friends I can booze with outside of hours." Hammons shook his hand then stepped back, he knew Galk's impatient look. “It is a truism that you never truly know anyone until you fight them,” Alex said, philosophically. “If we had more time then perhaps we could have staged a sparring round.” Galk stepped forward and caught Karnovskyy's hand in a grip just short of crushing. "I would be happy to spar with you. I vow I will not break any of your bones unless that is desirable for your honor. Battle scars are prized by many." Alex worked hard to keep the pain of Galk’s grip from showing and used his strength to squeeze back, as best he could, as he replied, “Although in the old days of Russian culture scars had a value, in today’s universe they are not necessary for honor to be retained. I will gain honor simply by stepping into a ring with you again.” He could feel the ache in his leg resurface since his last fight with Galk. At that time the Klingon was fighting for honor. This time they need only fight for fun. “I would be appreciative of you not breaking my back again.” He had scars alright, except his scars were not visible to the eye. Galk released his hand and rumbled a laugh. "You forget, or perhaps you are being sarcastic, I deliberately stepped away from breaking your back and released you immediately afterward. Then I surrendered to your men, my honor had been satisfied." Steven fought to keep from dissolving into gales of laughter, Karnovskyy's discomfort at the handshake was obvious though he fought back valiantly and they were chatting about broken bones after the Klingon offered to refrain or snap, depending on the Commander's decision. Then, finally Galk let the man go and Hammons was able to swallow the hilarity before it manifested. Hammons turned a bit to his left as though he was watching the lights of the decks whiz by. Galk had offered to spar with Steven a number of times in the past, the first time he had accepted but faked an injury not long in, the Klingon went about sparring with the same gusto he went to war. The human however valued self preservation above all else in a sparring match. And that was before Galk had come back, somehow he had bulked up while retaining his speed. The klingon warrior was a terror before, what would he be like now? Alex smiled, “No, I did not forget. It was more of a request to maintain that level of control. For me, there is no loss of honor to lose to a better opponent. Just a call to train harder.” The turbolift slowed and the door opened to the bridge. Alex looked at Galk and then at Hammons. “Perhaps you might want to fight with me as well?” He poked the smaller man’s arms, “You look fit enough.” "Best shape of my life." Hammons grinned. "I'm always up for a bit of physical exercise, name the time and place…," he winked, "...sir." Karnovskyy threw his head back and laughed, as he stepped off the lift. “I will have to talk to the Admiral to see if we cannot delay our departure. If not, we shall meet again. "Nice guy." Hammons noted as he and Galk exited the lift. "An exceptional fighter." The klingon replied. "Oh?" "He broke one of my ribs." Galk was smiling as he walked away. Steven hurried his pace to catch up. This was more like it for him. This bridge was the bridge of a warship. You could feel the potential violence that was within her; the sheer destructive power; and he like it. It wasn’t as if the Illuminar would have been a slouch in a fight. The ship had already proven itself several times. However, it was obvious that the Illuminar was built for exploration, and its defensive capabilities stemmed from that perspective. But in terms of sheer brute force, the Raptor was much more impressive. And he had to admit that the modern amenities were aesthetically appealing. “Hail the Illuminar,” he ordered. “On screen, Commander,” announced the communications off8cer. She had let her temporary first officer monitor the orderly transition of people and material from one ship to the other while they orbited Tellar. She had arranged a large blanket on the grass, and a picnic lunch of her children's favorite things. Ketal was due to join her, and both of her children were off shift finally. Vanyssa recalled what her life as a newly commissioned Ensign had been like aboard the Paladin, and then the Spectre and the Nimitz. it had been difficult, a hard transition from Cadet Counselor to Ship's Counselor, and then on to First Officer during the War. The death of David Dark, and the killing of their two babies in the bombing of Betazed. Vanyssa had vowed that her and Ketal's offspring would have safer, kinder lives. She trusted Saleke's son with her children. She had made sure that both were assigned to the Illuminar. Vanyssa looked up as the doors opened. She sent a quick probe to see if it was her mate or her children appearing for this long awaited reunion. Skashe smiled and waved at his mother as the door opened. He stopped inside and snapped a salute. "Greetings admiral!", then dissolved into laughter, the tips of his pointed ears getting a green tinge for a moment then straightened back up. "On a more personal note, hello mom. Any fried chicken in that basket?" He had walked up and gathered her in a big hug. Vanyssa watched her son with an indulgent smile and nodded, “At ease, Ensign.” Her voice held amusement and she held her son close. They were a very demonstrative family. Her mind touched his as she held his hand. ::Of course there is southern fried earth chicken for you, and catfish and shrimp for Celiste. Oh, my Sky. I have missed you. What mischief are you keeping your Sister out of?:: Vanyssa's smile widened as she felt the touch of Celiste, that she was on her way, a few minutes late as always. “Your Father was on the Raptor still but promised to be here.” She opened the basket and the smells of several galaxies began to waft out. Her children were a blend of betazoid, human and vulcan, raised in safety on Betazed. "What have I NOT had to keep her out of?" Skashe made a rude noise. "She's at least as stubborn as you and maybe worse." He turned as the door opened again and Commander Ketal stepped in, there were no hijinks from Skashe this time, he snapped a salute and held it out of respect. His father was more civvy than military and preferred it that way but he had stepped up for the mission and Sky was well aware of how much that … and his past had cost him. He held it for several seconds beyond his father's nod then stepped forward and gave Ketal the Vulcan salute. "Live long and prosper, father." Skashe, Celiste and their mother were the more demonstrative ones usually but sometimes Ketal threw a curve. He stepped forward and gripped his son's arms. "You as well my son." He pulled Skashe in until both hands were on his son's shoulders. "Space is vast and fraught with danger, never let down your guard." Sky nodded. "We weren't on that shuttle but I understand father, I'll keep my eyes open." Vanyssa frowned slightly, but pat the spot next to her on the blanket as Celiste blew into the Arboretum. “Dad!” She cried out, running across the grass and enthusiastically hugged Ketal, trusting in her Father to catch her. Vanyssa continued unpacking the food, all of it real, unreplicated. A luxury. ::Your Father had to take over sensors, and reinstatement of his commission was difficult. Don't cling too hard, dear.:: Celiste kissed her Father's cheek, as impulsive as Her Mother was at her age. The smile was genuine if small, Ketal was still working on it. He held his daughter close and strong for an instant as she kissed his cheek then released her to her mother. "I took care of the sensor logs, combined and downloaded them to the planetary bank for dissemination to the fleet. That area is too close to established travel routes not to be considered a danger." He moved over and sat close to Vanyssa. Vanyssa put her hand on Ketal's left knee and their minds merged for a moment in mutual support and love. Celiste dropped next to Sky and took a handful of walnuts and popped them into her mouth. Vanyssa handed Ketal a plate and a napkin before filling her own plate with fried betazoid clams, filets of the sweet tropical rainbow fish and candied flowers. ::So. Tell me all the news. Has Sky found a mate?:: Celiste snickered. She eyed her brother and decided to bail him out, “Nope. But I have been working with Luma on trying to breed a rose from the Lenai homeworld. Well, it won't be exactly the same, but based on holos and her input we are close.” Skashe rolled his eyes, having caught the edge of his mother's thought. "I've dated a few times since I got on the ship but Vulcan ears intimidate girls as much as they feel the challenge of getting close to one so I guess you could say I confuse them. Add to that the fact that I'm just about as opposite to one as you can get…", he shrugged, "... don't worry mom, the right one will come along one day. I plan on providing you with grandkids to spoil eventually." He reached into a big container and pulled out a thigh and breast, the breading was firm under his fingers and gave a satisfying crunch as he bit into the moist chicken. Vanyssa smiled indulgently at her only son and then turned to Celiste. “Jennah is studying the records of the Illuminari And the Lenai with Michaella Kirien and Riven Mias, trying to prove, or disprove that Betazed…” Vanyssa paused for a moment as she felt Luma's presence draw closer. “Was settled as a colony of the generation ships.” She offered the fruit bowl to Ketal, before taking a large helping for herself. Celiste dug In the basket, looking for the soft betazed cheese she prefered, knowing Sky didn't, she tossed a cube his direction. “Has Jennah and The Ambassadors found any correlation?” Celiste asked curiously. “I know the belief of Luma is that the Illuminari were the progenitors of the Betazed people, and it is why she needs a Betazoid mind-partner.” Vanyssa looked up in concern as the power levels fluctuated, dimming and brightening the lights several times in quick succession. ::The Captain,:: Celiste's tone was very respectful, ::Mentioned that Luma was going to be moved from the Raptor back here. She didn't much like some aspects of the ship, and was looking forward to being back aboard.:: Telepathy was very useful when eating. It allowed the family to make the most of the time together. “Ah. I suppose that makes sense. There were issues integrating her into the Mystique originally, but we never Received authorization to move her.” Vanyssa took a moment and reflected the love and contentment she had for her children. Sky swallowed the delicious bite. "The Raptor's main computer was designed to acclimate to her pretty well considering it's a near sentient positronic matrix but it was never going to integrate to her fully without a complete merge of her into the system and knowing that we were coming back here that was never the plan. The Illuminar's bio-neural gel pack computer suits her better for now and I doubt she would give up her roses willingly." He took another bite of dark meat as the others ate before continuing. "A positronic matrix computer core would be perfect for her but would also be permanent, once the sentient ship began to exist I doubt she would ever want to leave. I believe it would increase her control astronomically." Vanyssa eyed her intelligent son and was yet again thankful that he had inherited his Father's intellect and not her impulsivity. “From the communiques I have received from Luma, I believe she is happy now. Her decided unhappiness after my… accident,” Vanyssa reached for Ketal's hand and squeezed it, “I was unsure that we made the correct decision in bringing her back to Starfleet.” “Oh, she loves being part of the crew!” Celiste spoke, “And the revivification of so many lines of roses has diplomatic value, if nothing else. I am hoping that once we finish the design of her snow rose that we can work on some other projects. Commander Verin is a botanist as well and she has some awesome ideas about crop yields.” Vanyssa felt Luma's joy peripherally at Being home and her smile widened. “You both seem happy with the path of your careers. I was unsure about rejoining the Fleet, but the changes made by Starfleet command have been positive.” Vanyssa did people, not politics. “Are you happy? I can see about a transfer if you wish.” Vanyssa was not above pulling a few strings to keep her children safe. Celiste jerked slightly, then shook her orangey-red hair, “No, Mom. I am happy here. The ship is beginning to feel like home.” "A transfer?" Skashe's voice was shocked. "Why? Maybe Celiste doesn’t like it here but I'm fine. I enjoy the exploration of it all. I wouldn't think of wanting to leave." Celiste gave her brother a look, “I like it just fine, but it’s difficult being just a Ensign, a botanist and in the shadow of a much more gifted scientist.” Celiste was a soft scientist, unlike her brother the astrophysicist. Vanyssa kept her eyes on her children. They didn’t have a lot of time before the Captain was planning to leave Tellar and she would need to be ferried back to Mars by Raptor prior to it beginning its assignment. Vanyssa decided to change the topic, “We only have about another hour before we need to go back to the Raptor.” She paused and switched modes, ::I miss you two so much.:: Celiste dropped the piece of cheese she had been nibbling on and hugged her Mother. Ketal finished his salad with a variety of incorporated animal proteins and cleaned his hands and face before diving in, having seen the looks of their offspring. "If you need a CSO Admiral, look me up." Then gave a laugh. "Just kidding, I've run the department a time or two and would rather get a few years more of experience before going that route." Vanyssa grinned, “Nepotism has it's place, but I do not think you are quite ready. Thankfully there is no need for a forced maturity as there was a few years ago. She had adjusted the controls to her desired sensitivity and orientation, something she was still experimenting with, as each ship had those quirks she needed to address. This simulation was based on the data from the Illuminar since it was put into service. Behind her came the command, “Take her out, Ensign.” “Aye, Sir,” she said automatically, as her fingers moved deftly over the panel. Applying just the right amount of energy, the ship moved out of space dock cleanly. The screen changed and on her sensors came an asteroid field. “Ensign, we must navigate this asteroid to recover the USS Pegasus,” the voice said. “The Pegasus is at coordinates 135 by 25 by 63. The added complication is there is an Orion raider looking for the Pegasus to recover the ship for their own end. You must get us there first, and in one piece.” "Aye, Sir,” she said as she looked at the sensors. There was rarely a rhyme or reason to the movement of the rocks within an asteroid field. She increased the forward shields and energized the tractor beam. “Begin,” came the voice. Pihi began the course she plotted, mindful of the dangers. It was the shortest path to the Pegasus, but there were a few tricky sections, so the sensors suggested. As the ship moved forward, she used the tractor beam to push the rocks out of her way, like playing a game of pool in three dimensions. 8-asteroid in the side pocket, she thought to herself. Things were going well, so she increased the ships speed by 10%, sliding the ship this way and that through the field. As she looped around a larger asteroid, she could feel the eyes of the crew on her. =^= Proximity Alert Starboard. Impact in 10 seconds =^= the computer reported. Pihi looked that way, her VISOR showing her what the sensors were seeing. There it was. The asteroid had a satellite that she didn’t see at first. He’d gotten used to the space from others that the size of the Raptor had given him. Now, on the smaller ship, he found that he had to be more on guard. It took him the past few days to be able to block out all of the random thoughts that would assault his mind. However, he knew that Luma was pleased to be “home” in her own skin. And that joy bled into his own emotional state. Now he was able to maintain his mental shields and begin to enjoy being able to work. Periodically Luma would play some happy starting in his mind and he’d find his head moving to the rhythm of the beat. He looked at the short stack of PADDs that contained crewmen that wanted to have counseling sessions with him. Some were still dealing with the impact of their fight with the Xenolithe. Suddenly he felt a tingling in the back of his brain, the sign that someone was communicating telepathically. The options on this ship were short. ::Temas, can you come up to my office on deck 2, please? It's not important enough for Luma to move you.:: Temas frowned. To communicate with him so directly was not that unusual, but it was also not common. Usually it was when something important was happening. ::I am on my way, Commander.:: He stood up and looked at himself in the full length mirror he usually used for counseling activities. He wasn’t fleet, so he did not wear a uniform, but he did wear what he called his counselor uniform. It was a blue tunic that had black highlights that emphasized his athletic body and matching slacks. He straightened himself out a little and headed out the door. He was already realizing what he was needed for. The real thing was better, but the recipe was close. The betazoid took a seat back at her desk and sipped her tea for a moment. Luma does not interfere with the everyday function of the ship, per se. And at the same time she monitors the function of the entire ship as though it were her body. Much the same way you monitor your heart rate or breathing. Those things are almost autonomous.” He began to walk in a circle around the commander’s desk, being careful not to slow down behind her seat. “She would never interfere with anything that you were doing,” he emphasized. “And her “taking control” would be under very rare, and unusual circumstances. The only time, to my knowledge, that she has done so was when the Illuminar was being threatened by an interdimensional anomaly and she saw the only way to save Commander Verin was to execute a maneuver that only she was capable of, and there was nothing else to be done. However, even under the most extreme situations Luma will let her small ones take care of themselves, if they can.” He looked at Piripi and smiled, sitting down in a chair, “Does that make sense?” (reply Piripi) He moved over and stood beside Luma’s purple cat persona with a smile and put his arm around her holographic waist, “And if you ever have any questions about Luma, or even for her, please feel free to drop by and see me. First, and foremost, was so that some eager beaver may want to “study” her or use her as a weapon. That had already happened to her before. Second only to that was the true lack of understanding of Luma’s nature. He smiled and replied, “I’m not much of a pilot, so I have no idea the complexities of the things that one needs to worry about flying the Illuminar. However,Luma is not someone that you should be worried about. In fact, Luma would, most likely, want to be your friend. In this case, it’s almost true. The Illuminar has a living soul. Luma.” The Lenai’s image brightened as he spoke of her. “How often, Ensign Piripi, do you concern yourself with your own soul, or that of someone else? Add to his standard work as an operations officer, he’d been seconded to Lieutenant Bobh and tasked with finding a way to help Luma to not feel pain. He grabbed a juice from the replicator and sat down to wait. As he waited patiently, he watched a group of officers in workers' overalls come into the mess hall. One of them peeled off from the others and headed to where Torek was sitting. Torek noticed the man was an ensign and the color band suggested he was operations or engineering as well. Before the Klingon could say anything, the man pulled out a chair and swung his leg over it to sit down. “Hi there, I’m James. James Shaw, damage control officer. I heard rumors that we had a new officer joining operations, and he was a Klingon, so I’m guessing you’re him.” He waved to the people who came in with him. Torek frowned. So much for a quiet time waiting. “Greetings James. He paused to consider his words when Tavay spoke again. “Mr. Shaw, do you want to join us?” she asked. James chuckled, “Thanks for the invite roomie,” he said with a smile, “The lads and I have a date in the Rec Room. A poker tournament tonight. And I feel lucky,” he added as he stood up. “Got to get my lucky hat, so have fun Torek, I’m sure we’ll see a lot of each other.” Turning to Tavay, “I still have that bottle I picked up to celebrate your promotion, if you’re not too important to be seen socializing with the lower decks.” (Reply Tavay) (Posted by Tim) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> End Compile
