Keira had arranged for Kellis and the Stewarts to ensure there was a decent continental
breakfast, coffee and tea waiting for those showing up for the meeting. She showed a little early
to be ready for what was to come. She strode through the doors the scent of hot Raktajino
wafting through the sliding door. She was carrying a series of small boxes in one arm. She
placed them neatly near the head of the table. Discreetly she peeked into each and then
rearranged them in a particular order. She also saw the other package she had arranged to
arrive was there as well, wrapped snugly in packaging to prevent any marring to its surface
waiting for its eventual reveal.

(Reply any)

Keira walked over to the refreshment table and poured a raktajino, placing a spoon full of
sweetener and enough cream to lighten it by several shades. She swirled the teaspoon three
times adding momentum as a catalyst to mix the ingredients. Soon she found herself sitting at
the head of the table coffee, cup, and saucer waiting for others to arrive.

The first mission was always the hardest. It was something that always set the tone for officers.
A test of metal that could not be avoided.

Ainia sighed behind the tactical station while bringing stuck on the bridge was not she came to
enjoy. It was a welcome respite from the chaos of the last mission. She watched as the senior
staff walked into the Observation Lounge she understood the importance of an after mission
briefing, and that the next mission might be coming down the line, It was a welcome thought.

Turning to the console before her, hand flying deftly over the controls as she imputed the
commands for the computer to start the scheduled diagnostic processes to insure that the
shields, weapons, and tactical systems were all operating at peak levels. While she waited the
computer response and reports from the automated systems. She looked over the bridge at the
other officers that where currently on duty.

Tinmanrion Jayc tapped several entries into his trusty collapsible padd to make sure his
department reports were ready and submitted the last few with his log. They would head to the
captain and then to Starfleet Science sans the omega particle information, as the captain had
ordered.
In his other hand he held the mocha latte Semaj had replicated in a travel mug, since he’d been
up late and needed the extra caffeine. The milk clearly was that plant version Semaj favored
from Vulcan with that strangely salty hint. Must be because it grows in the planet's small seas.
The turbo lid opened and he strode down the short hall and into the lounge for the meeting.
“Good morning Captain,” he said, realizing he was the second in.

Ire stepped into the Observation Lounge and nodded at Merek, Jayc and the others that were
sitting at the table. He had been through the ship going from department to department and
checking how repairs were proceeding. He had all the data on his PADD which he placed on the
table as he sat down in his chair.

As was his custom, Cal waited to be last to enter the room. He was well aware that his presence
filled a room. Stepped inside and stood to the side of the door, choosing to not sit down.

He nodded to the captain and took his position with his hands behind his back. He had to admit
that he was curious how Captain Merek would debrief this mission. It had had several levels of
success; or lack thereof.

He looked over at Jayc and nodded. The two of them would have a discussion after this
meeting. There was something odd about the readings he took of the ship they had
encountered and he needed the scientist’s help.

The captain began tapping her cup to get everyone’s attention.

After the Captain exchanged pleasantries with all those in attendance, she got everyone's
attention by tapping on her coffee cup with the spoon she had stirred the sugar and creamer
with, "Let's begin."

"Our second mission as a combined crew." She paused after her preamble, gathering thoughts.
"Was interesting. We saved as many Federation citizens as possible, we even, I think," she
looked to her Chief Science Officer.

(Reply Tinman)

"...made some friends along the way." she finished with a smile. "We watched the destruction of
a Federation Starbase," There was another pause for emphasis, those who knew, knew why.

(Reply Williams, Tinman, Dogan)

"Encountered another ship, shy or aloof, whatever the reason, didn't want to talk." She said.
"We salvaged the information from the station. So as far as Starfleet is concerned, mission
accomplished." ~Was it really? Someone would have liked us to save the station, surely.~

"Doctor Dural, let's start with you." Keira said before taking a sip of her Klingon beverage. "How
are our evacuees?"

"Those that weren't gone before we arrived," the Doctor began. "Over eighty percent should
make a full physical recovery. Fifteen percent may have some minor disabilities correctable with
further treatment. One still in critical condition."

"Counsellor?" Keira sensing Dural's report was finished moved to the next.

Navi adjusted her seat, feeling a little nervous with all eyes now on her. "We've made initial
contact with all of the walking wounded. Greater than fifty percent of those refused counselling
services, of those that accepted we've arranged with foundation sessions, grief counsellings,
abandonment syndromes, and advocated better coping strategies. Doctor Illandrid is finishing
up some of those sessions now."

"Very well. Ire. Our ancillary craft?" Keira asked.

(Reply Williams)

Keira listened to the report that her friend and First Officer gave. "Thank you. Lieutenant Jayc,
sciences?"

(Reply Tinman)

"Thank you Lieutenant, let's have Ensign Imka give her report." Keira said. She felt a little guilty
putting her on the spot, but part of her job as Captain was to evaluate the officers on her ship
and how they handled pressure. She had performed well in her duties as long as she's been on
the ship, there was no reason in Keira's mind that she couldn't do this.

(USS Hades- Deck one Observstion lounge - CSciO/20, Lt. SG. Tinmanrion Jayc-0803)

The captain’s call to begin caused the small murmuring in the room to die down and come to
order. “Aye,” was almost entirely the choral response.

The second mission had been a cohesiveness to the crew. He could sense a shared
consensus of purpose and a feeling of trust.

Then the captain mentioned the new friends Jayc nodded at her gaze on him. “They were
grateful for the rescue of their children and then grateful for the removal of the threat to their
children from the nebula.”

The doctor reported and then the counsellor. As she shared the status, he almost chimed in with
the sense of their presence on Hades.
The rescued felt safe even though they were recovering from their trauma. Jayc wished he
could do something for them but he was not a counsellor, he was a scientist. And his insight
might come off as a violation of the telepathic ethics. What non telepaths often didn’t realize
was that living things projected their thoughts and experience like voices in crowded rooms.
Some was going to be heard whether one listened or not.

Keira pulled him from his ponderings . "Thank you. Lieutenant Jayc, sciences?"

He slid his padd forward slightly on the desk.
“Science departments stand at fully operational. We have been asked to help identify the
unexpected cause of a misalignment in the warp coils in the lower port nacelle. We will be able
to correct the issue at starbase Freedom much easier than in free space. Other than a life
science concern and the data from an induced micro cingulsrity we are normal functions.”

The captain asked Imka to give that report and he turned to his very promising scientist to await
her statement.

Ire listened intently to what the others said during the meeting.
"Very well. Ire. Our ancillary craft?" Merek asked.

Ire nodded.

“The ships small craft are working and ready to go. Saying that I have put the craft involved in
the mission into a repaid maintenance cycle. To make sure that they are no unknow issue with
being in the station vicinity and in the nebula. This will mean that most of those craft will be out
of circulation until this is done but our fighters and the Cheron will be back in rotation before we
get to Starbase Freedom. I will also request a list of stores for when we dock so that we can
make sure that we have all the spare parts that we need.”

"Thank you.”

Ire nodded to Merek.

“Lieutenant Jayc, sciences?"

He leaned back in as he listened to Jayc’s report. Knowing that he had to be up to date with the

Cal listened to the reports of the others. He began to adjust his own report in his head but there
was much to be discussed. He just wasn’t sure if this was the time. Jayc alluded to the creature
that was brought back from the base.
"Please liaise with Lieutenant Dogan with any needs you might have for securing the lifeform,
Merek said. “Based on your report, that's not a lifeform that we want wandering around the
corridors."

“I do not believe that it would wander through the ship, Captain,” Dogan replied with his usual
stoicism. “It did not appear to have legs, and from my experience seemed to be able to fly. So it
might fly through the corridors.”

(reply Imka, if you want)

"Lieutenant Dogan, ship's security and tactical status?"

“The ship's security and defensive systems are fully functional,” he reported. “All crew from the
Hades have been accounted for, with no severe injuries. The science base, however, is another
matter. They lost more than ¾ of their crew and staff. Unfortunately the survivors, as yet, have
been able adequately answer my questions about what had been going on on the station. But I
have not questioned everyone.”

(reply Merek)

“The only remaining security point are the questions around the as yet identified spacecraft that
had entered the system and then withdrew,” the Brikarian said. “I may have some answers

After discussions ended Keira stood and picked up the package wrapped in the corner and
placed it on the conference table in front of her.

"Our ship hasn't been complete, we've had all our required systems, sure...." the Romulan
explained while she deployed a small hidden blade and precisely cut on the packaging, opening
it in to two separate packages one a great deal bigger than the other. She moved the smaller to
one side and worked on the larger.

"First a parting gift from Mister Sytuk." She peeled the plain paper protection, revealing a canvas
painting stretched across a frame, nearly one meter by one and one half meters on the other.
She tossed the waste paper aside before turning the painting around so the gathered could see
the painting. A stylized version of the USS Hades that they were standing on seemingly
zooming through the cosmos.

with similar deft movements of the small blade. "This one I worked on personally," she began.

Cal did not share the captain’s optimism that they had a “good idea of what went on.” In fact, he
was of the frame of mind that they had just scratched the surface of a much larger issue.
However, the immediate problem had been alleviated and, for now, he’d have to be satisfied
with that.

"If there's nothing else?" Merek looked at him.

“No ma’am,” Dogan replied.

The captain moved in to a couple of presentations. The first was a painting of the ship. It was a
stylistic interpretation. Brikar were not well known for their appreciation of art but it seemed to
please the others so Cal was willing to live vicariously through their enjoyment.

The second was more up Dogan’s alley, in that it was functional as well decorative. It was the
dedication plaque of the ship. His eyes perused the names and then the inscription.

“For even bold natures flee, whenever they see Hades close to life. - Sophocles"

It was an intriguing quote, to be sure, and he pondered its meaning. Even the most daring
should be afraid when death approaches. Intriguing indeed since they were supposed to be an
exploratory vessel. However, exploration needed to have its teeth.

It was even more interesting when Merek announced that she would install the plaque herself.
Just another example of her as a hands on CO.

“Captain, if you would like assistance in putting the plaque in its place I would be honored to
help,” he offered.

He let out a slow breath. The ship was settling down after the concerns, the creatures in the

amalgamation of tools, some Federation Standard, some Romulan and a smattering of Klingon.
She grabbed a Federation tricorder, at least a decade old. She flipped it open with a flick of her
wrist and scanned the blank space measuring distances precisely, then turned to the plaque and
took equally precise measurements.

"Mister Dogan, were you serious with your offer?" Keira asked.

Dogan had allowed the others to file out of the room then followed the CO as she left with the
plaque and a tool kit. The others found a place and formed a semi-circle around the the
bulkhead that was clearly where the brass plate had been designated to be placed.

There was a bit of a commotion and the captain brought it to an end with an, “As you were.”

She prepared her tools and the plaque then turned to him. “Mister Dogan were you serious
about your offer.”

Dogan nodded, “Indeed, Captain. It would be my honor.”

If there was one thing the Brikarian could appreciate it was military traditions. He stepped
between the others, his massive form creating a bit of a wedge, and gently picked up the
plaque. As he held it he rubbed his thumb along the letters, thinking about the words they
spelled out.

"For even bold natures flee, whenever they see Hades close to life.”

The importance of this ceremony was not lost on him.

In his hands the plaque was practically weightless. He easily held it out the bulkhead, keeping it
in place and waiting for Merek to complete the task.

Dogan nodded, “Indeed, Captain. It would be my honor.”

Before handing the large officer the plaque to hold in place Keira grabbed a rust colored metal
pair of pliers that looked like they had one tooth or fang. She pressed a button on the handle
and the fang on the plier began to glow an orange-red. She squeezed the pliers down on four
separate spots near the corners of the plaque, punching mounting holes. She placed the pliers
carefully in a bracket to keep the heated metal portion away from anything it would melt.

"Over here, center it as best you can." she advised.

~It must weigh nothing to him.~ She mused to herself, knowing full well her thoughts were true.

A handful of rapid movements with a hand held rivet gun she fastened the brass plaque directly
to the bulkhead.

"That's not going anywhere." Keira said with a smile. "You can let go now Lieutenant.

"Thanks for your assistance." Keira said while putting away her tools.

"OPS, ship-wide." Keira ordered.

OPS nodded as the three toned Bos'n's whistle sounded.

"This is your Captain speaking. I've just mounted the dedication plaque, here on the bridge. It's

it's been an honor to serve as your Commanding Officer. I look forward to the missions ahead of
us, and I know you'll make me and your fleet proud. As an Escort vessel, many of our powerful
systems are designed for war, as I think about that, I think back to the old Human proverb, "It's

Once she had welded the plaque to the bulkhead the captain asked Dogan to let go of it. He
released the pressure and almost smiled at the sight of the now sealed dedication inscription.

“Thanks for your assistance,” Merek said as she packed her tools.

Dogan bowed, nodded, and replied, “My pleasure. I am always at your service.”

He chose his words carefully, realizing the importance of his own pledge he had just given to his
Captain. He wondered if she were aware that from this point forward he would give his life in her
service, if needed.

Merek announced the mounting of the plaque and gave a short speech. Cal wondered if it was a
commonality that Captains do such things. If that was the case he may never make Captain.

Once she ordered everyone back to their duties he turned to her. “Captain, I have need of
Ensign Semaj. It is about a matter that I added at the end of my report.”

(USS Hades - Bridge - Commodore Ailynn Bracken and Captain Kiera Merek - 0858)

Ailynn heard the three tone Captain’s call as the doors opened, not wanting to intrude on Kiera’s
moment, she hit a hold button to the right of the door, seeing that Kiera was about to address
her ship. That was something that did still sting, she admitted to herself, but her time as a front
line Officer had long since passed, she wasn’t that person any more, and she was glad that she
could hand over this beautiful, amazing ship to someone that she deeply respected.

"This is your Captain speaking. I've just mounted the dedication plaque, here on the bridge. It's
strange we never got the opportunity until now." Keira said with a pause. "These last missions

Noting that the Bridge was settling down slightly, and Kiera had finished her address to the ship
and stood quietly beside the dedication plaque.

“Funny, this is a career and adventure, but the plaque also made it feel very much like coming
home.”
“It does, doesn’t it.” Keira managed to answer while lost in thought at the plaque.

The security chief made a request, “Captain, I have need of Ensign Semaj. It is about a matter
that I added at the end of my report.”

Keira silently nodded in response. As the pair of security officers left, another assumed the
tactical station on the bridge. They managed to key the bosun call just in time.

Exiting the lift, hearing for the first time the Bosun’s call announcing the arrival of one of the
Admiralty, she stepped across the bridge, her slow measured stride carrying her easily across
the deck.

The whistle was just enough to gain the Captain’s attention. She watched her friend and mentor
move across the deck toward her.

Slowly she ran her finger over the motto as she stood next to Kiera. “I'm going to miss her,” she
gestured around them. “Miss all this. I'm confined mostly to HQ now. Especially after this.” She
touched the Commodore pip at her chest.

Kiera smiled indicating to the entire bridge, still at attention., “They’re waiting for you.”

Ailynn blushed gently, turning to the bridge. “My apologies everyone, thank you, as you were.”
She smiled warmly, watching as they all stood down from attention and relaxed back into their
jobs.

The bridge resumed their duties after being given the word by the Flag Officer who just stepped
onto the bridge.

“You traded four for one, but it looks good.” Keira said with a smile.

Thank you.” She said, chuckling to herself, “the young man in the bar yesterday didn’t notice the
box around it, tried chatting me up by congratulating me for making Ensign s.g.” She rolled her
eyes.

“Hazards of being probably the youngest flag officer in history.” Keira smiled, “In his defense
Commodores are usually pushing their fourth decade.”

“Not even probably, I’m twenty-eight.” she chuckled. “Should have seen his face though when
he realised, I think he’s considering a posting to the delta quadrant somewhere.” She chuckled
again, then gestured toward Kiera’s ready room. “Shall we?”

“The Bridge is yours Ire.” Keira said as they walked to the ready room.

Ire nodded as he and then rest of the bridge crew began to get back to work. He slowly moved
around the bridge glancing at the readouts getting the status of the ship.

“The Bridge is yours Ire.”

Ire nodded as Merek and the Admiral entered the ready room.

“Yes Captain.”

He took the few steps to the command chair and sat down in it. It always felt a little unsettling
when he sat in the command chair. Even though he knew that the captain has final responsibility
for what happens on the ship, but he did not want to be that person who had to explain to the
captain what happened to the ship. He glanced at the arm rest monitor to make sure that
everything was still as it was and then settled back into the chair and waited.

(USS Hades - Deck 14- CSec Office - Lt. Cal Dogan and Ensign Semaj - 0909)

As they entered the Security Chief’s office Dogan indicated to a chair in front of his desk.

“Have a seat, Ensign Semaj,” he said, emphasizing the word Ensign.

Semaj nodded in recognition of the instruction and looked around the basic set up of the office.
Most of the species filled their work areas with something personal. The Brikar had as of yet,
not. It was almost a Vulcan aesthetic. He checked the chair and waited.

Cal moved around to the desk and sat on the other side. His office was still rather spartan, as he
had not had the time, nor the inclination, to decorate it further. He was not really a being of
creature comforts, but he was aware of how those trappings eased the anxiety of others.

After the chief sat Semaj sat.

As he sat down his reinforced chair still managed a small groan. “So Mr. Semaj, I would like you
to evaluate your own performance on this last mission.”

Semaj recalled his report he had composed during his shift.

“I followed Starfleet protocols, and your orders including not leaving the station until the XO had
done. I was prepared to return to the station when the commander left for the unexpected
second round, until overridden by the captain. When required to make personal choices on
action protocol and your example guided my choices. No members of my team were injured or
unduly unsafe during the mission or separated by proximity or comms. Evidence suggests all
requirements were met.” He paused, “But there is a nagging, feeling I suppose Those with
emotion would call it.”

Dogan looked intrigued, “A nagging feeling?”

“I did not want to overstep your orders to leave you on the station, sir. I obeyed, but I had an
almost emotional desire not to leave you in danger,” Semaj admitted. “I prefer your command
style to previous security chiefs.”

Cal leaned forward and put his hands on the desk. “A most logical preference.” The Brikar was
not being egotistical. He was more straightforward than most beings on the ship. The term
“brutally honest” had been used in reference to him. It was a trait that Captain Sekal had
appreciated in him. “And I can appreciate your dilemma. You could say that I faced a similar
issue with the First Officer.”

Then he changed his tact. “How long have you been on the ship?”

“Since first launch. Lt Commander Jayc, came aboard together from our previous ship.”

Cal pulled out a PADD and brought up his data on the Vulcan. “And that is where you were
bonded?”

Semaj raised an eyebrow. “No we bonded on this ship before you’re posting, sir.”

“Indeed,” Dogan said, curious how that all came to be, especially since they are in different
departments, and their rank difference. But that was a recent change. “It must be awkward for
you, being an ensign, while you are still an ensign.”

“It has concerned me that my performance has not merited further advancements and the
position it places on my mate. However, I am determined to succeed professionally.”

“And that is why I’ve asked you here,” Dogan said, standing up. “Please stand.”

Semaj obeyed the instruction, standing and facing his superior officer.

The Brikar carried a small, black box in the palm of his hand. He stepped up to the Vulcan and
opened the container. It contained a shiny gold pup with a black center.

“With the authority invested to me,” he began, “I hereby promote you to the rank of Lieutenant,
junior grade, based on your service record and your performance during our past mission. You
are afforded the rights… and responsibilities.. of this new rank.”
He held the box out to Semaj, knowing well that his fingers would only fumble over placing on
the man’s collar.

Semaj breathed to tame the emotions attempting to unveil themselves. “Thank you Lieutenant.”

“Captain Merek was made aware of my intentions,” he added. “But I believe that your spouse
may only now be sensing this event. Yours is not the first Betazoid/Vulcan union I have had
experience with.”

Semaj nodded. “Indeed, I may have questions for those unions in future.”

“Commander T’Mur, from the Illuminar was a formidable Chief of Security and her union with
Commander Verin was quite strong. I would happily answer those questions if I can. Before I
excuse you I would like you to know that I have also expressed an interest in moving you to my
command structure in the future as my Assistant Chief of Security. But only if your future
performance warrants it.”

Semaj nodded. “I will endeavor to earn your trust and respect, Lieutenant. Personally, I am
grateful for this promotion and your mentorship, sir.”

“On Brikar, acceptance of a promotion is a blood oath. I will perform my duties, or die in the
attempt, or until you find someone better than I. I understand that you are not required to make
such a promise. However, I accept your willingness to be mentored and continue your career.
Dismissed… Lt. Semaj.”

“Sir,” Semaj responded. “Vulcans have a similar and logical view.”

With that, he did a smart about face and walked out the door.

(USS Hades - Ready Room - Commodore Ailynn Bracken and Captain Kiera Merek - 0910)

As the doors closed behind them, Ailynn undid the top button of her uniform, and sat on the
chair opposite Kiera’s desk. Never one for particular formality in general, she was always
absolutely relaxed with those that she loved and trusted, Kiera being one of them.

“How are you doing? It’s never easy inheriting things the way you did, dead man’s shoes and all
that.”

Keira’s brow furrowed, “We lost some people.” Keira admitted, “Left when you did, requested a
transfer.”
“Oh?” Ailynn said genuinely worried. “Leaving because I did or leaving because you took over?”
She asked, admittedly unfairly, so waved aside the question. She was suddenly irritated, her
innate Bracken temper bubbling slightly at the thought of the disrespect.

“It's alright.” The blonde assured her friend, “If they want to leave, I'm not going to stop them.”

“Maybe so.” Ailynn stood, and walked over to the replicator and ordered their favourite drinks.
There were a lot of the Admiralty who would sit, prim and proper, awaiting service, Ailynn wasn’t
one of those, she didn’t surround herself with so called ‘yes men’ those that clung to every word
and applauded every action or thought. Ailynn detested from the very bottom of her soul that
type of behaviour. She supposed it was genetic in some regard, though had been reinforced by
countless hours in trauma wards, diagnostic meetings and who knew wherever else, but she’d
always surrounded herself with the best people, all of whom would call her a silly arse if she
was, indeed, being one.

She passed over Kiera’s drink, and taking a sip of her coffee, sat back down. “If you’re sure, if
it’s a case of ‘Bracken’s my Captain, not her…not Merek,’ then I will have heads mounted on
pikes in the rose garden at HQ by nightfall. I will not have that disrespect.”

“I don't believe any was intended,” Keira admitted. “I've learned sitting in your old chair to
choose my battles. Even if they had meant it as a slight, leaving is their choice, but the
classification and non-disclosure orders still apply. It can only bother me if I let it.”

She relaxed, a sense of self reflection settling on her. Leaning back in her chair she crossed her
legs, resting her cup in her lap, pausing before speaking, then gestured once more to the rank
pip at her breast. “I never wanted this, you know.” She snorted a self-deprecating laugh. “Not
even as a kid, when I was surrounded by who knows what level of Senior Officers. I fought it,
with every fibre of my being, Hell, I even explored the very deepest darkest realms of very
serious addiction to avoid it.” She couldn’t remember at that moment if she’d ever opened up to
Kiera about her teenage battles with addiction.

“You can see more from high up. The broader strokes, make Starfleet better.” Keira encouraged.

“Fate finds our path I suppose.” She said. “My point is, that…I suppose I figured we had more
time to have fun, you know? You and I, I mean, as a team, just sail away and find shit. My critics
used the injury to ground me, ‘I was a danger at the front line, I could die at any point…security
risk. My supporters see me as who knows what, so now they want to keep me at HQ.” She
sighed, but there was a twinkle in her eyes, a hint of the woman she was. There was a certain
look that Ailynn possessed, her Academy roommates had known it all too well. It was the look of
a woman who was watching dice being thrown, some of them were rolling seven or eleven on
the pass line, but Ailynn seemed to be holding Aces over eights and no-one knew how they’d
gotten to this point or even more importantly; how to get out of it.
“They see you as a problem in the Captain's chair?” Keira grinned before the delivery. “Become
everybody's problem. They didn't like the way you do things, they gave you more power? Their
mistake, your benefit.”

Ailynn smirked, then sipped her tea, the wry smile reaching her eyes, She’d had the same
thoughts, of course, but it was always a comfort to know that her thoughts were mirrored by
others. She mocked shock as she spoke. “Captain Merek to suggest such a thing…” She rolled
her eyes gently. “You are right of course, if they thought that I was too much of a problem out in
the black…talk about a powerplay.” She winked.

“Being half Romulan does have advantages.” Keira said.

“They won’t know what hit them. Mum becoming an Admiral was one thing, she’s the precise
person that you need as Fleet Surgeon General. Me?” She chuckled. “They haven’t precisely
decided where to put me yet so I’m working with a few departments, mum mentioned Chief
Surgeon, which I can do, but too much in my comfort zone. Last few days I’ve been associated
with StratOps and CounterIntel.”

“Counter Intel?” The spoken words were such a surprise Keira almost spit out her drink.
“Interesting choice…”

“I know right? Thought I was a problem on the frontier, so let's give the crazy bitch access to
who knows what.”

“I have an idea..” Keira alluded to things she saw in her recent mission.

She nodded simply, then changed the subject only slightly, “look, we’re still friends, you’re one of
the godmothers to my daughters, I’ll always have your back. You do need to be careful though.”

“Why’s that?” Keira played coy. An Omega incident and discovery of other clandestine
operations in one mission was concerning.

“Already heard your name mentioned, make too many waves and you’ll have a flag of your
own.” She winked playfully. “Tell you what. I’ll race you to Fleet FO.”

“You can have it.” Keira joked, but shifted to a more serious tone, “I like being out here. I think
I’m where I need to be, at least for now.”

Ailynn nodded, knowing the feeling all too well. “I know that feeling,” her look growing distant as
she sat next to the woman that she considered a friend, but regretfully hadn’t worked alongside
enough due to their work patterns.

“Who’d have thought they’d put a surgeon in the Admiralty, twice?” Keira shot back.
She chuckled but carried on. “I remember being at med school, being a surgeon was all I
wanted you know? To be the big person in that room, especially in neuro when someone’s entire
psyche was literally in your fingertips.” She snorted, half derisively at the naivete of her younger
self, younger? Barely six years now she actually counted them, but on the obverse she
regarded all the growing she’d done in those years, and now really looking at herself, she
realised that that was never who she’d been, she’d always been the person that stared back
judgmentally six inches from the other side of the mirror, she’d always been the person that she
was in danger of growing into.

“Mars was fun, but any moron can build a hospital, anyone can push their vision on hundreds,
thousands and reform what was broken.” She chuckled again. “It was when we went on to the
Exeter that my view changed. I loved it out in the black.”

“It is fun out here.” Keira agreed.

“You know Dale of course,” she said, referring to her grandmother Admiral Dale Bracken,
ostensibly Fleet Aeronautics, but the brains behind the Underworld class ships that they now sat
on one of. Together with Jav Pros they’d created the greatest heavy tactical cruiser ever put to
paper.

“Not as well as you do.” Keira answered. While Ailynn’s kin was familiar to the Romulan woman,
not so nearly familiar as her own family was with her, but a sight more than the rest of the
Admiralty.

“She always had a look in her eye when she came home, we’d sit on the patio at San
Giamangino,” Ailynn smiled, thinking of the countless times that her senior staff had taken
breakfast, or dinner on that patio at the villa in Tuscany. “You and Kelis were there a bunch of
times.” she smiled, remembering happy times seemingly an age ago.

“Quiet, serene, beautiful.” Keira recalled what she could of the place, hand in hand with Kellis,
the memories had an emotional quantity that made them more vivid.

“She said that there was a pull, she’d look to the horizon, and you’d see a twinkle, a fire in her
eyes, a yearning to…to see what was on the other side of that hill, and when you saw what was
there, you’d look to the next hill and begin to wonder…what’s over there? I never understood
that until I was out there in the black, but it seeps into your soul, people like you or I aren’t
supposed to be caged.” She sighed, open only to her friend. “Our souls look to the black, look to
the deep, we yearn for what we can’t see, we long for what we may not understand.”

“Curse of the explorer, was what my father called it.” Keira commented. “He grew up in a
different time. The Romulans of his era were fiercely patriotic, and those that weren’t were
deathly afraid. Mother tells me he never understood that part until the colony was forced to
become self-sufficient. Though I suspect it might have more to do with “forcing Romulan will” on
the flora and fauna.”
Ailynn half chuckled. “Yeah, I can imagine. Thankfully things have changed at least a little.”

“Not that I don’t have plenty of time, and I do love catching up and reminiscing. What brought
you here, A?” Keira attempted to cut through any pleasantry. “There is at least a reason you told
everyone else you’ve come here. Surprise inspection? Flag Officer tour?”

Nodding, Ailynn drew a careful breath, her playful carefree manner dropping immediately as her
more formal Command psyche took over. She paused, and lifting her right hand up tapped her
ear and then pointed to the ceiling before pulling a small disk out of her pocket and activated it,
tossing it onto the desk between them.

Keira nodded. ~ Even an empty room can listen ~

“Dampening field, it’ll distort what we say, and provide the microphones that are undoubtedly
recording this with something far less interesting.”

“What is this all about A?” Keira said once she was sure that the field was up. The Romulan in
her would be quite insulted at someone she didn’t know assuming there were listening devices
in her ready room. She knew Ailynn fairly well, and she wouldn’t assume without a damn good
reason.

“I’d like to say this was purely social, but I need to give you a heads up. Like I said, I heard your
name mentioned in hushed tones in out of the way corridors, couple of times actually.”

“I’m sure my name has been said quite a few times in command. Why your mother placed me in
charge instead of a Captain the Admiralty had say in. I bet their knickers are in a bunch about
it.”

“That’s the problem, Kee. I wasn’t in Command, that I could have fished about with, found
something out.” She shifted in her seat, leaning forward slightly. “I was in JAG.” Ailynn’s face
was deadly serious, an expression that she knew her former FO would know all too well. “Kee,
you have problems, extraordinarily serious ones.”

“What about?” Keira asked. “Is this about my last mission?”

Ailynn shrugged gently. “I don’t know Kee. When I say details are sparse I literally mean that.”
She said gently, then probed gently. “Why? You do something that may be noteworthy?”

“Well we did pick up some things that seemed very classified.” Keira said.

“Seemed very classified?” Ailynn said with a half chuckle despite the seriousness of the
situation. “You want to elaborate?”
“I don’t want to implicate you too…”

“I’m not certain you could if you wanted to, everyone seems to want me where they can keep an
eye on me, they’re not about to start mudslinging with me. How about you tell me what you
can.” She paused. “If you want to. If not that’s fine, no harm no foul. I’m only here to give you the
warning that I have.”

“Since you, being the former Captain of this vessel, I know you've been briefed,” Keira started.
She looked to the distortion device put in between the pair, verifying an indicator light was
active. “We discovered an Omega event. Hidden in the station, A.”

Ailynn nodded. “I remember, all too well. What did you find? What happened? Things of that
level…” Ailynn visibly shuddered, “Doesn’t bear thinking about.”

“Results were not completely conclusive, it was hidden behind a Tholian dampening field,
practically invisible to standard sensor settings. If it was all on the up and up why would they
hide it?”

“Beats me. Those kind of things are rarely fully above board, there’s always a layer of intrigue,
and not in the fun, interesting way. Any idea why it was there? By whom?”

“Don't know who.” Keira said shaking her head. “Tons of dead people when we got here.”

Ailynn swore with a sigh. “I saw that part of the report, troubling to say the least. Look,” She
said, “I’ll try to poke about, see what’s what. Like I said though, you’ve brought attention on
yourself, I’ll do what I can, I have some inroads to intel, so I’ll see what the scuttlebut is saying;
try to keep you in the loop. I imagine that you’ll be hearing from JAG fairly soon. They never
mess about on these things.” She gestured to the device on the desk, “I should think about
getting back to the office. I have a fairly long leash, but my ADC has a nasty habit of keeping a
diary of my movements.” She shuddered.

Keira toggled the interference device to the off position.

“Since you’re here, A, you should join Kellis, Rayna and me for dinner.” Keira offered.

“That would be lovely, thank you.” She replied, honestly, “Be good to see you with your hair
down too, I know how hard it is, but you have Raena too.”

“I’ll figure something out.” Keira said. “Always do…”

Ailynn nodded, glad for this opportunity to genuinely catch up with close friends, such time was
rare. “You have a spare room I can commandeer? Doesn’t need to be fancy, you know me.”
“Quarters have been arranged for you on deck three.” A smile crept across Keira’s face, “you do
remember the way? Or should I arrange an escort?”

Ailynn laughed, shaking her head. “Cheeky, good job we’re friends. I’ll find the way, I’m sure.”

“Just messing with you…” Keira held back a chuckle, “ Will you be joining us at 1900?”

“I’ll be there. Thank you Kee.” She smiled happily. “I’ll bring a bottle or two of the wine that I
know Kelis likes.” She stood, and moved toward the door, “Thank you for this, genuinely,” She
said, then with a nod and another amiable smile, she left the ready room, headed briefly back to
her office.

“Yes that does seem to be a good idea. I guess its something that we would have to place some
where secure rather than just dumping it out the air lock?”
“Out an airlock would make it a danger to any vessel unlucky enough to snag it. They can
apparently survive in space hybernstion as long as a tardigrade.”

“Is there anything we can do to keep it more secure. Do you want to evacuate the surrounding
sections?”
Jayc gave an excited look.
“Well Ensign Kovich and I have been contemplating. We could rig a medical transporter bank
and triple encoded and powered with its own power source. We can transport the e creature and
its stasis smvontsinment in perpetual transport. If it isn’t specifically reenergozed it just stays in
there unable to harm anyone else. Kovich wants that over species extinction.”

(USS Hades- Deck one Deck 9- Security Department - CSciO/20, Lt. Commander. Tinmanrion
Jayc and Lt. Cal Dogan - 1400)

Jayc walked into the security area after his meeting with Commander Ire. The chief had
requested a meeting via calendar and Jayc found that interesting when the topic line of the
meeting was Concerns. He nodded and smiled at members of the security staff as he moved
through the security repartment.

The latest mission had been alarming and dug into the depths of the corrupt “tail side”, if he
remembered the human expression, and it had left many questions. Jayc was almost certain
there was at least one other area of the station that likely was hidden by the cloak and dagger
tech.

There were definitely questions and concerns. He stopped in front of the Brikar’s office and
reached out to touch the and tapped the announcer. He waited to be admitted.
Cal sat behind his desk looking at the reports that had started to come in. He found his mind
continually distracted by the nagging thoughts of the readings that he’d taken when the alien
ship left the scene of the science base. He was, by nature, a suspicious being. He was certain
that there was more to the appearance… and subsequent disappearance of the ship that made
him think that there was more to it than it appeared. But nobody else seemed to think that it
was an immediate concern.

When the door chime rang he absent mindedly called out, “Come.”

The door opened and admitted the CSO. He looked up then rose to his feet. His seat almost
audibly sighed at the relief from his mass.

“Lt. Commander,” he said stoically, as though he had been expecting him, but he had not.
“What brings you security?”

Jayc smiled at the mention of the new rank.

“Hey, two things actually,” he gestured at the chair on his side of the desk showing his request to
sit. “First a big thank you for Semaj’s promotion. He’d never demonstrate it but I could sense his
satisfaction and pleasure through the Bond”

Dogan shrugged as he lowered himself back to his seat. “Thanks are not necessary. He earned
his rank.”

Jayc nodded.

The second. “You’d mentioned wanting to talk about readings you took.” - Was it about that
stealth ship that had almost muted impulse signature readings?- Jayc wondered to himself.
The Brikar could not hide his surprise, “Indeed? I did.”

“Do you have time? Or would you like to schedule a chat?” The Betazoid asked. He pulled out
his trusty foldable padd to bring up some of the data he’d analyzed if his friend wished.

Cal nodded, “I have the time. In fact, I was just looking at the data.”

He activated his own PADD and shred the data with Jayc’s.

“If you note, the reading I got of their ion trail showed signs of Benamite. The traces show that
the Benamite is partially consumed. The only known use for Benamite crystals as a power
source is Quantum Slipstream Drive. And if that is powering their drive, who knows what other
uses have been found for it, which might explain their ship’s stealth capacity in power
production. If you weren’t looking for it you might not find it… unless you get lucky.”

Jayc leaned forward and tapped his screen studying the data intently as he said, “I don’t think it
was luck as much as it was a very diligent and thorough tactical security chief.

The betazoid paused then looked at the Brikar in the eye. “Are you suggesting that this ship was
maybe using benamite tech for quantum drive rather than standard warp? There would be
energy and stealth benefits that would likely outweigh the negatives.”

Cal shook his head and admitted, “I’m not sure what I’m suggesting. I am only aware of a
singular use for Benamite crystals. Quantum slipstream technology has proven to be somewhat
unreliable in conjunction with federation technology. However, if someone has I cannot imagine
the possibilities.”

He paused then leaned forward on the desk, “And that is as far as I have been able to go. I’m
no scientist. I was hoping that you could help me figure out this mystery so I can workout who
those beings were.”

He tapped a button and showed the last image they had taken of the ship before it disappeared.
Jayc watched the repeated visual then studied the data. “Ok,” he paused and then studied the
data.

“Yeah that’s a slipstream vortex…..” “I need to think on this, but I can offer a preliminary
suggestion.”

Jayc tapped his comm badge, “Computer, access my padd. Is data of unknown vessels
consistent with quantum drive technology?”

[Analyzing,] the computer responded. [Data is conditionally similar to known slipstream, or
quantum drive.]

“Analyze sensor data,” was there any similar subspace vortex prior to that vessels arrival or
subsequent departure?”

[Analyzing. Two subspace aperatures one minute apart prior to ships arrival and two after ship
departed.]

“Computer, were these detections at the edge of our sensor range?” Jayc asked

[Confirmed both at extreme sensor range.]
Jayc looked at Dogan.”We can start to have the computer track when it sees these readings and
mark the time and locations. Try to build a connectable pattern.”

Cal nodded, but he liked the personal touch He tapped his comm badge, “Lt. Semaj report to
my office.”

=^= Semaj here. En route Lieutenant.=^=

Jayc angled his head curiously. “Someone’s making plans.”

Dogan tilted his head to the side and smiled, which looked more malevolent than it was
intended. When the Vulcan arrived he bade him to enter.

“Mr. Semaj, I have a task for you that might just meet your talents,” Dogan began. “Lt.
Commander Jayc and I are working on something, and I believe your analytical side can be of
assistance.”

He turned his PADD for his junior officer to look at. “Now the Lt Commander is looking for a way
to detect these readings in our sensors, but I still want to know where these beings come from.”
Semaj studied the information without anything being explained. “Benamite. Fascinating. Slip
stream drive faster than warp. Similar to Borg trans warp conduits but not using antimatter or
micro- singularity technology as the Romulans do.”

He pulled a foldable padd from within his uniform, one his mate had designed for him. It has
been impressively versatile.

“I would suggest expanding the information to Starfleet navigation buoys. They constantly
monitor and send information. It would be useful to have the computer to simply analyze data
dumps for such information as not to alert unwanted attention. In time…..”
“It may give us an idea of vessels using this tech and where they came from?” Jayc asked.
Semaj nodded.“Indeed.”

Cal sat back and said, “I don’t want the computers to do all the work here, Lieutenant. Computer
data banks exchanging information can be traced, and Inwant to keep this between us, for right
now. According to your records you are one of the best investigators on the ship. I want you to
investigate. Share what you find only with Lt. Commander Jayc and myself, unless the captain
asks about it, we

Do not need to report our findings… just yet.”

Semaj raised an eyebrow. “Acknowledged Lieutenant. It will take longer in this fashion but I will
be discreet in the manner I examine the information.”
“Cal, there are serious implications here. If someone is using benamite powered drive, up to
now they may have been operating basically unknown,” Jayc said. “I know I am speaking what
is obvious to you, but why not include the captain now?”

“I would like to have a little more information than supposition before I involve anyone else,”
Dogan said. “If the Captain asks, then of course you should inform her of what we’re doing. But
I don’t want to offer anything more than a rumor. After all, this is not an official investigation.
More of a fact finding.”

Jayc glanced at Semaj, who trusted Dogan. The statement was logical to him. “Ok,” he said.

“Let me know what else you need. The ship was either jamming our sensors or had stealth tech
but I’m not seeing signs of how yet. Nebula may have been interfering.”

“Perhaps,” Cal agreed, “and that is what I’d like to take to the captain. I appreciate both of your
help in this matter. Perhaps we can get together later and discuss our findings. Perhaps
dinner?”

He was a bit reticent about suggesting a meal as he rarely ate with others. However, he also
realized that such social interactions released some tensions and ideas tended to flow better.

“Dinner would be agreeable, we are all off duty at 1700 this rotation,” Semaj stated checking his
PADD.

“Look at you two being all social. Dinner sounds great. 1700 work for me,” Jayc smiled, folding
his PADD and slipping it in his tunic. He stood and headed toward the door, “I’ll take care of
some preliminaries in science and oh Cal, I sent you an update on the suggestion for that
creature you and sinks found. That thing is DAN-Ger-OUS! I’m awaiting Captain's approval on
putting it in a perpetual transport storage device.”

Cal nodded, “I will look at your recommendations and see if I have anything to add.”

“Thanks Cal. Semaj, I’ll see you later?”

The Vulcan nodded. “I will meet you in our quarters shortly after being released from duty.”
