Pihi lay staring at the ceiling. She was basically cargo, being taken to her first assignment
onboard the USS Raptor. With no on-board assignments, she had spent her time in the
holodecks running simulations and getting acquainted with the helm station of the USS Raptor.
It was lonely, boring work. The lonely part she didn’t mind.

Her mind was wide awake, replaying the scenarios in her mind. How she perceived this, what
she did in that situation.

Being cargo, she didn’t have the best quarters. A bed, a shower, a closet. Not that she didn’t
travel light. The special cube was up, projecting images that were important to her, but in
wavelengths only she could see. She was a private person, and this was one of the best ways
to stay private.

Still, she needed to see space. That was her home, her element. Getting dressed, she decided
to head to the ship's lounge.

(USS Canopis – Deck 5 – Lounge – Ensign (jg) Pilot Pihi “Kestral” Piripi – 2320)

The lounge was quiet. The crew was busy with whatever tasks they were up to. Piri found a
table by the window, sipping a hot tea while studying space.

Her reverie was disturbed and she heard a voice, "Hello Ensign, you're the new assignment to
the Raptor aren't you?"

Piri turned to face the voice. She noticed the man’s pips. “Yes Sir,” she said in a monotone.

"Nav/Conn right? That's a brand new ship I hear, and a tough bird. Did you do simulation
training on an Inquiry class at the academy?"

“I have been availing myself of the holosuite on the ship to familiarize myself with the details of
the Raptor, Sir.”

"A famous class of ship I hear which they've revamped and re-imagined technically even though
it's only what? A few decades old? Since the Vanguard class grew out of it, I'm surprised they
circled back around."

Pihi shrugged, “I don’t know sir, I just fly them,” she said.

(USS Raptor - Deck 1 - Bridge - Ops, Ensign William the Android - 2306)

"The first wave of marines and security have transported down sir."

"Acknowledged Mr. William."

The android looked back to his board and was monitoring activity of subsequent transports as
well as communications between the teams. This was far different from Illuminar due to that
ships small crew. Raptor had a far greater capacity in both men and equipment and nearly 100
available would be "boots on the ground" which was nearly a third of the marine, security and
medical contingent.

=^=Temerity to Raptor. Come in Raptor.=^=

"This is Raptor, reading you clearly 2nd Lieutenant. Report please."

=^= LZ (Landing Zone) secured with a confirmed breathable atmosphere. Establishing a
circular perimeter, one quarter klick out from LZ with overlapping fields of fire. Request update
on enemy movements. Currently tracking formation 12 klicks due south heading north by
northwest. Over. =^=

"Acknowledged, stand by."

(Reply: Temerity)

The android turned. "Doctor Gralen, the marines report an enemy formation 12 kilometers South
of the landing zone and request further information."

"On it!" Holis called out and focused one of the sensor arrays to the immediate area in and
around the capitol city. The data wasn't long in coming. "I read 25 unidentified alien entities in
formation. They appear to be increasing their pace and have turned toward the rescue teams.
No other aliens groups in evidence."

William turned back to his board. "Lieutenant Temerity, you have 25 hostiles closing on your
position, approximately 5 minutes to your position." He heard commands ringing out behind him.
"The captain has ordered additional reinforcements, 10 more marines heading down, their eta
is 2 minutes and an additional 10 behind them."

(Reply: Temerity)

"The captain has authorized all available force to maintain your position. Do you require the ship
to saturate the area with phaser fire to attrit their numbers?"

(Reply: Temerity)
(Posted by Charles Gatling)

Tempest laughed as her aft shield lit up and goosed the nimble fighter once again as she
spiraled to the left. Knight 1 made a fast spin and turn which left it eating her space dust and
she was soon behind it and sighting in once again as her opponent struggled to turn toward her.

 (USS Raptor - Deck 1 - Bridge - CO, Captain Sekal - 2307)

William was communicating with the marine commander on the ground as the CO addressed
science.

"Doctor Gralen, give me video of the enemy formation."

"Aye sir, on screen."

A picture of the Norkan's surface came up and zoomed toward the ground until the perspective
changed to give a close view of the Xenolithe column. The perspective appeared to be from 10
to 15 meters above them.

The group was moving fast, very fast, weaving between and around obstacles such as
shattered domiciles and other, slightly larger buildings. The Vulcan leaned forward in the
command chair and studied their movements and equipment, 20 carried or had some type of
energy weapon slung across their back and five carried tubes around 1 meter in length. These
also had heavy looking bags slung in place of the rifles.

"Analysis of their equipment Mister Galk?"

The klingon growled as he looked them over. "Most carry energy weapons, certainly, the others
appear to be mortars sir."

"As I thought."

"I could burn them down with the ships phaser banks sir. While resistant to energy weapons
they are most certainly NOT resistant to 14,000 terrawatts of energy. One blast over the area
they cover should leave no evidence they had ever existed."

"As well as completely obliterate what might remain of romulan colony possessions in the area
Lieutenant. However if 2nd Lieutenant Temerity requests fire support I will certainly reconsider
your offer. Doctor Gralen, is there any sign of support elements or craft in the area?"

"None yet sir."

"Captain, the fighters and shuttle are approaching. I'm seeing considerable damage to the
romulan craft."

"Noted. Signal permission to dock."

"Aye sir."

"Still no evidence of xenolithe ships in the area but telemetry from the fighters suggests that
they are difficult to scan, there may be more out there that we don't know about."

"Thank you Lieutenant, continue to scan and notify me if you see something unexpected. Are
you scanning for Nageri slipstream traces?"
"Yes sir, no sign of them."

The Vulcan remained in a heightened state of vigilance as he manned the command chair, why
the capitol ships had left both ground and space elements within the system was unknown at
this time, perhaps they planned to return or the forces that remained in system were due to be
recalled. Raptor was a fast ship and had been far closer than they might have expected. The
hulks of destroyed spacecraft in the system were evidence that this attack had been swift and
punishing. Or... it could be a trap, a lure, bait to bring in a ship or ships that they could then
destroy.

But this quickly? Unlikely. And the xenolithe couldn't have known that a warship had been this
close.

If they appeared Raptor would be ready for them, meanwhile emergency operations to the
Norkan colony would continue.

And if they returned?

They would find a hot welcome.

(Knight 1 - Cockpit - FSXO, Lieutenant Tempest Grey Wolf - 2308)

The green light to approach and dock lit up her board but she wasn't done yet and began
speaking.

"Raptor this is Knight 1, I will be leading the shuttle into berth, he has no communications,
requesting further orders."

=^= Raptor here, Knight 2 is to stand by. After the shuttle pilot has landed Knight 1 and Knight 2
are to proceed to the site of emergency operations and provide air superiority and ground
support.=^=

"Knight 1 copies. I won't be long Knight 2."

(Reply: Corday)

Some would consider Raptor to be a gorgeous ship, as she goosed the fighter to the bow she
noted that it certainly looked lethal. Ships of the line all occupied their own niches of functionality
and this warship had that presence of menace. She turned into the docking bay after confirming
that the shuttle was still following.

Along the way they had been forced to slow to accommodate it and she had considered putting
it in tow but they had been close so she suffered with it. It seemed to pause for an instant at the
mouth of the bay before following her in.

She fretted as she set the fighter down and waited for confirmation to depart, when given orders
she didn't like sitting around doing nothing.
It took several minutes before her comm activated.

=^= The shuttle pilot has been retrieved, Knight 1, you are cleared for departure. Coordinates
incoming.=^=

Her nav computer lit as it received the data while lifting off. "Knight 1 departing."

She turned the fighter and gave it some speed while catching a glimpse of the romulan engineer
behind the transparent windows of flight control. He pumped his fist at the fighter and she
smiled before increasing speed, Knight 1 obediently shot through the portal and back into
space.

She was turning around the ship and toward the planet as she spoke.

"We are back on the job Knight 2, follow me down."

"Raptor here, Knight 2 is to stand by. After the shuttle pilot has landed Knight 1 and Knight 2 are
to proceed to the site of emergency operations and provide air superiority and ground support."
Ensign William had passed along the orders given by the CO.

Sekal was looking toward Lieutenant Commander T'Mur as she exited the turbolift, what had
been found during the autopsy was second in importance to current operations.

"Mrs. T'Mur, your presence is required on the surface to coordinate security efforts, the marines
have incoming hostiles and I wish to have a robust secondary defense to assist in maintaining
order for the rescue teams."

(Reply: T'Mur)

"Have Lieutenant Trei accompany you to assist."

(Reply: T'Mur)

"Captain, I volunteer to accompany the security team."

The vulcan's eyes returned to the security station. "Not at this time Mr. Galk, if xenolithe ships
appear I will need an experienced tactical officer."

Galk tried to hide the sour look as he turned back to monitor the board.

"Knight 1 and 2 have left the ship and are on their way."

"Thank you Mr. William."

The vulcan returned to monitoring the situation as his orders were carried out.

T’Mur and Dogan stepped off the bridge to be met by the captain.

"Mrs. T'Mur, your presence is required on the surface to coordinate security efforts, the marines
have incoming hostiles and I wish to have a robust secondary defense to assist in maintaining
order for the rescue teams."

T’Mur nodded, “Yes, sir, Captain,” she replied simply.

"Have Lieutenant Trei accompany you to assist,” Sekal told her.

T’Mur lift an eyebrow but tapped her comm badge. “T’Mur to Lt. Trei, meet me at transporter
room one in five minutes to render support in a rescue and recovery on the Norkan colony.”

(reply Trei)

"Captain,” Galk interjected, “I volunteer to accompany the security team."

"Not at this time Mr. Galk,” Sekal replied, “if xenolithe ships appear I will need an experienced
tactical officer."

T’Mur had a sense that there was more to that refusal than a simple matter of experience, as Lt.
Taylor had ample experience at the tactical station, perhaps even more on the Raptor. But she
looked over at the wounded looking human and held up her hand. She would leave him there,
again, just in case.

Taylor shrugged, feeling bolstered by his chief’s confidence, and continued monitoring the
information from the colony and the fighters.

“I will report on our initial findings with the autopsy when I return,” the second officer said. “Since
Galk will be remaining here you are with me Mr. Dogan.”

Cal nodded, looking more like a bow, “Ma’am.”

As she stepped back into the turbo lift she tapped her badge again. “Security team 3, meet me
in transporter room 2, full tactical gear, immediately.”

As the door closed she gave the order to deliver them on deck 2. She had taken the precaution
of moving her tactical suit to her personal quarters for expediency in just such an eventuality.

 (USS Raptor - Deck 1 - Bridge - FO, Commander Sienna Verin - 2314)

Sienna had spent the last several hours on the Bridge. For the first time she found herself
actually liking all these screens. She was an old fashioned officer, and she really preferred her
seat next to the Captain. She'd felt like she was off to the side, an after-thought, but the screens
were becoming really useful in her organization of resources to help with the rescue. She'd
raised further holographic screens around her,

Sienna's Mother was the Admiral in charge of the Strategic Operations department and had
been for most of her life. She'd learned a lot in watching Sophie Verin at work, and Sienna put
that knowledge to good use.

The industrial replicators in the cargo bays were put to work at Sienna's behest, one was
replicating the nutritious but miserably tasting ration bars that the Federation had come up with
to provide the nutritional sustainment of life. Sienna had the idle thought that her Mother had
ongoing research to try and make the ration bars taste better, but they were terrible. Every
Starfleet Officer ate them during survival training.

She had another replicating the ideal hydration solution. This was an inoffensive, bland tasting
drink that was as close to neutral as it could be. It did slake thirst. Pallets of both were being
made, cargo and operations ensigns in each cargo bay were preparing them, staging the cargo
transporters with supplies for when it was safe to send them down to the colony,

Sienna's eyes were tracking the data from the sensors, the pockets of the survivors, mostly in
underground bunkers. She organized marines to protect those areas, and vaguely she was
aware that T'Mur was going to the planet in order to help. Sienna spared a moment for T'Mur, a
shaft of love and pride. The need for her mate to return to her. ::Parting and never parted.:: She
sent as T'Mur transported to the planet.

Sienna turned back to her work, helping to recalibrate the sensors to be able to track the
Xenolithe.

(USS Raptor - Deck 4 - Transporter Room 1 - 2O/CSec/Tac - Lt Commander T’Mur- 2315)

T’Mur and Dogan entered the Transporter Room to be met by the team. She looked at each of
the team members. Carol Lannis, her assistant chief of security, was the first to greet them.
Behind her were Ensigns Jacob Roberts, Lucas McQuire and the Andorian Shosl Koks. The
final two members were the second Andorian, Pevn, and Ensign Kelly Long. Long stood in the
background, looking very uncomfortable.

Since the incident on the Klingon homeworld she had participated in counseling sessions with
Quinna, and retraining by T’Mur, herself. She had worked hard and earned her right to be
appointed to this team. But her level of discomfort was not lost on T’Mur. T’Mur walked over to
Long.

“Ensign Long,” T’Mur said, “is everything alright?”

Kelly looked shocked. It wasn’t their first interaction, but it was their first on duty interaction.
“Uhh, no Lt. Commander. Everything’s fine.” She lied.

T’Mur put a hand on the taller woman’s shoulder, “Relax, Kelly. You’ve earned this. You are
ready for it.”
Kelly took a breath and relaxed notably. “Yes, ma’am.”

She looked around the room. One person was missing. Trei.

“Okay people,” T’Mur said, “let’s get ready. As soon as Trei gets here we will be beaming down.
This is a mop up and rescue mission. We may, and most likely will, meet up with an enemy that
we have little information about. What I do know is that they have an exoskeleton that is
extremely hard. The weak points will be in joints and where their plating meets. Phasers on full
power will slow them down but will not kill them. This is why we have spent so much time on
hand to hand combat training over the past few days. Any questions?”

Ariel entered the transporter room in a body armor suit. She looked like a mix of the old Teran
character batwoman and the female version of black panther. The suit was pretty snug against
her skin but gave her plenty room to move so it was very comfortable. She had a batt'leff
strapped to her back along with a dagger clipped to her belt. Her phaser was secured to her
belt as well but she probably will be going hand to hand dominantly because she is better at it
and well trained to do so. She approached T'Mur for further instructions.

Trei was the last of the party to arrive. She walked over to T’Mur and said, "I am ready
Commander. What are the objectives Ma'am,”

T’Mur looked at the woman and replied, “We are there to support the marines and basic search
and rescue. We may, most likely, run into hostiles. However, Lieutenant, since you have had
very little training with the team your role will be strictly search. I will need you to find any
survivors that you can. I do NOT want you to engage the enemy unless absolutely necessary.
Do you understand this?”

(reply Trei)

“I understand that you are a trained fighter,” T’Mur told her. “However this operation will require
cooperation and working together. This is not what you have trained for. I don’t want you to get
killed, or worse, cause anyone else to get killed because of you. If you do not follow this
directive at any time I will send you back to the ship. Is that clear.”

(reply Trei)

“Ok everyone,” T’Mur spoke to the group, “ step up and prepare for transport.”
Everyone stepped onto the pads and waited. Once T’Mur was satisfied that they were all ready
she nodded to the transporter chief. “Energize Chief Martin.”

She felt the tingle of the transporter effect take hold.

(USS Raptor - Deck 1 - Bridge - CO, Captain Sekal - 2318)

"Security support teams have departed. Knight 1 and Knight 2 are closing on the enemy
formation."

The captain gave a firm dip of his chin as he continued to watch the main viewscreen closely.
The xenolithe had slowed to a crawl and now began to hunker down as the 5 tube bearing set
up their mortars then un-slung the bags from their shoulders in preparation for softening up the
marine lines.

He tapped the comm. "Lieutenant Grey Wolf, target the rear elements of the xenolithe column."

=^=Aye sir, coming within range in 15 seconds. Knight 1 will engage first followed by Knight
2.=^=

The Vulcan folded his arms as he mentally counted down incoming time to the nano second,
before he hit 10 the xenolithe had focused at a point above them and begin firing their energy
weapons. At 15 the screen brightened as phased energy blasts began churning up the ground
in the enemy rear, throwing projectiles of jagged rock and twisted metal through the air.

2 of the xenolithe mortar men disappeared amidst the chaos, devoured by the phased energy
before sight was obscured of the area accompanied by secondary explosions from the bags that
they had worn slung over their shoulders. Visual identification of the area was now impossible
until the air cleared a bit.

"Mr. Galk. Tactical scan."

"Four life signs extinguished, twenty one remaining."

=^=Knight 1 assuming overwatch, Knight 2 is clear for run. Air superiority established.=^=

(Reply: Corday)

He settled back as the dust settled and the second fighter began its run followed immediately by
photon grenades landing with extreme precision as the marines focused their own mortar fire
into the chaotic scene using telemetry and coordinates provided by the tactical station.

The surviving xenolithe, what few there were broke formation and ran in several directions,
ineffectually attempting to avoid the follow-up fire from the fighters as they hunted them down
relentlessly. Unless the surviving members of the force managed to convey a surrender they
would be annihilated with extreme prejudice.

None did.
"Knight 1 and 2, I want the field entirely cleared for emergency operations."

=^= Understood sir, search and destroy mission ongoing. Corday take the south and work your
way to the west, I'll take the north and work my way back toward you. Friendly elements are to
the east.=^=

(Reply: Corday)

The captain switched the comm. "Lieutenant Commander, the sortie has been broken, we will
be monitoring the ground for further activity."

(Reply: T'Mur)

Nodding, he switched again. "Lieutenant Pex, we have a shuttle in the bay which requires
repair, please give it an assessment and report back to me, the pilot has been rescued and will
need his craft back in working order."

(Reply: Pex)

"We have an incoming ship."

His head snapped toward William. "Xenolithe?"

"No sir, the Canopis according to its transponder."

This had not been expected, the Commodore had stated that it and the Berang were due
tomorrow. But... it was nearly midnight so apparently his wording had been lax.

"Acknowledged. Continue to monitor its approach."

"Aye sir."

The approach to the colony was uneventful, but Snoopy knew that it would, most likely, not
remain so. Their orders were clear, maintain air support for the marine forces.

=^=Knight 1 assuming overwatch, Knight 2 is clear for run. Air superiority established.=^=

“Roger that,” Corday replied. “Knight 2 is in position and clear for a run.”

He looked at his sensors and angled the fighter to cause as much damage to enemy forces as
possible. Red triangles were Xenolithe, green circles were marines. As long as the marines
maintained their BDU transmitters there should be no collateral damage.

The marines had done a good job of driving a wedge through the Xenolithe line of attack, but it
had left them open to a flank attack.
He opened a channel to the marines, “This is Knight 2. You have movement to your 9. I’m
incoming “

“Lucy, activate phase cannons and load up a compliment of torpedoes.”

[Roger, Snoopy. Cannons are charge and torpedoes are loaded.]

As he approached the ground he began his strafing run. The ground exploded as he fired and
he watch red triangles disappear from his monitor. He turned for a return run and released
torpedoes, following jump with and run with the cannons.

He opened his channel to the marines, “Left flank is clear. I see minimum stragglers.

Then he opened he spoke again to Grey Wolf, “Knight 1 to Knight 2, looks like it’s rabbit
season.”

He was referring to the scattering survivors.

The eam rematerialized on the planet and T’Mur surveyed the area. The dimming light gave the
area an ominous feel. It might have been that on top of the smell. She could smell the
expended energy from weapons and she could smell the blood of the dead and dying.

A fighter craft flew overhead and began to fire in the direction that there was the greatest
Xenolithe activity. The sound of explosions and dirt and burnt flesh reassaulted her olfactory
senses.

T’Mur pulled out her tricorder and began to scan. The area. Carol Linnis made her way ove.

"The xenolithe just got punched hard and are scattering Lieutenant Commander, reading 10 life
signs heading away from our position. Op area is clear."

“I concur,” T’Mur said with a nod. “Which is a relief and a concern. I expected them to put up a
much better fight, even in such small numbers. However, stay on high alert.”

Linnis continued her scan and reported, "Bunker is in that direction, eighty meters, looks like a
collapsed building is blocking their egress."

T’Mur nodded, “Then that is our target.” She turned to Trei, “Lt Trei, are you getting anything
from that bunker?”

(reply Trei)

"If I may give my opinion?" Carol offered. "We use phasers to tunnel to their position and depth
at a 15 degree angle. If we try to use the original tunnel it's liable to collapse again under the
rubble. Using a pristine shaft should circumvent that and allow us to extricate them."

“A logical course of action,” T’Mur agreed. “Ms. Linnis I want you to organize the operation. Mr.
Dogan, run the perimeter with Koks. I’ll join you after I contact the bridge.”

“Yes, Lt. Commander,” Dogan rumble. He moved over to the group growling. “Koks, with me.
Set up a perimeter. Scan for 5 kilometers. Anything closer than that inform
me immediately.”

The pair moved off as T’Mur reported to the Raptor.

“T’Mur to Raptor,” she opened the comm channel through her helmet. “Our landing area has
been cleared. We may have found some survivors. Trying to extricate them from some rubble
right now.”

(reply Raptor)

With that done she joined the formation of Dogan and Koks to create a triangle of protection
around the team creating a tunnel.

(USS Canopis - Deck 5 - Lounge - Quartermaster, Lieutenant Daniel Rodriguez - 2325)

The lounge was sparsely populated due to all hands being on deck and preparing to assist the
Raptor at the Norkan colony. Daniel had staged food, water and medical supplies a half day ago
in preparation for this so that when it hit the fan he had all bases covered. In addition the teams
had been assigned equipment for their tasks. Shuttles were stocked, you name it. The brazilian
was as ready as ready as could be.

About twenty minutes to orbit so he had just enough time to grab a lunch before chaos ensued.
He replicated a tall sandwich of ham, cheese and turkey with tomatoes, lettuce and a tangy
spread, grabbed a tall glass of iced tea with mint, lightly sweetened and made for one of the
tables, but not before he spotted a new face. He took a quick bite then walked toward the
window.

"Hello Ensign, you're the new assignment to the Raptor aren't you?" Even though they were
getting close to the planet the ship wasn't in evidence, around the curve of it no doubt.

"Nav/Conn right?" His eyes swept over the visible details of the landmass which was growing.
"That's a brand new ship I hear, and a tough bird. Did you do simulation training on an Inquiry

He smiled and gave a chuckle. "A famous class of ship I hear which they've revamped and

(USS Canopis – Deck 5 – Lounge - Head Nurse - Lt Dixie McCall– 2326)

It had been a rough day for the medical department. They’d all worked round the clock to
prepare for the mission to assist the Raptor and Dixie had worked harder than she pushed her
nursing staff to. She was ready for a little down time.
As she stepped into the Canopis Lounge she looked around and smiled, when her eyes fell
upon Danny Rodriguez. They’d been awful flirty with each other as of late, and she was in a
mood for some of that.

She sidled through the few populated tables towards them before she realized that he was
already talking to somebody else. Somebody she didn’t recognize. Her beautiful blue eyes
narrowed as she scanned this newcomer.

She she was a little thing with a little darker than fair complexion. She also wore, what appeared
to be an optic visor. Dixie hadn’t seen something like that is some time. With the current status
of medical magic she was surprised the… ensign chose to wear a prosthetic rather than chose
the option of ocular implants available. Perhaps she should find out.

She walked over to the table and smiled at Danny. “We’ll if it isn’t my quartermaster. I was
thinking that by now you could have at least been a half master.”

He turned to see Dixie had arrived. "Always at full mast for you only." The eye not in the pilot's

“And who’s your friend?”

""This is the transfer to the Raptor we have been ferrying. I've been told we will be doing a swap

He looked back to Piripi. "It was nice meeting you Ensign. May you ever have fair winds at your

Making his way back to the nearby table he picked up the very good sandwich and took a huge

Tegian strode into the shuttlebay and picked out the Romulan shuttle from the others right away.
His team was already climbing over the shuttle. Ensign Zowie had recognized the priority and
had sent a team of six. Panels on the outside of the shuttle were already lying on the ground as
he walked up. He could see score marks all over the shuttle.

He walked into the shuttle and saw Ensign McGuyver sitting next to a Cadet's name he couldn't
remember on the floor with more panels strewn about. He hadn't realized he was on the Beta
shift, but he'd let the shift leaders reorganize the Illuminar crew to balance it out with those that
came with the Raptor. "Ensign, can you give me a preliminary report? Or should I make my

(USS Raptor - Deck 14 - Main Shuttlebay - EO - Ensign Angus McGuyver - 2333)

Angus had arrived with his team, including Charlie Waffles, Priscilla Zowor, and the ever serious
Wednesday Adams. They immediately went to work. There wasn’t much to the scanning. It was
easier to say what was still working rather than what was wrong.

“This poor little lady has been through the wringer,” he said, the Scottish brogue thick in his
words. “Time to see what we can do.”

By the time Tegian made his way to the shuttlebay they had pulled most of the unrepairable hull
panels off. They lay strew across the deck of the bay and Angus had gone inside to start
working on the systems.

He was talking to Cadet Ziddu, and the sound of frustration was starting to strain at his voice.
They had pulled apart several control panels and had equipment to monitor the energy flow to
and between the panels.

“Look, Uc,” the Scotsman said, in a forcibly controlled breath, “it’s not that difficult. You need to
remodulate the phased energy inverters and change out power node converters, as well as
replace the power conduits here, here, and here, before we can reroute power to these
systems.” He pointed to points in the diagram on the cadet’s PADD.

Ziddu still had a lost look on his face. “Look, I know that these are very old school systems, but
surely you had some education on them in the academy?”

The Bajoran shrugged, “I really, well most of us, to be honest, don’t pay too much attention at
those lectures since we figured we’d never see them.”

“We’ll, you were all wrong, weren’t you,” McGuyver said with disgust. He looked around and
then called out, “Wednesday, Wednesday, be a luv, and help this … gentleman out.

Wednesday Adams came around a corner and rolled her eyes at Uc. He was not the brightest
tack in the box, but he would work till he dropped.

“Fine,” she sighed and grabbed his hand. “Come on then. We’ll start over here.” Then she
dragged him away from McGuyver before the Scotsman did something bad to him.

Angus looked up to notice Pex coming towards him.
"Ensign, can you give me a preliminary report? Or should I make my own assessment?"

Angus shook his head, “One would be as good as the other. It is exactly as bad as it seems. It
would be easier to tell you what still worked. And it doesn’t help that this technology is…
ancient, even by my standards.”

Tegian sighed and looked around. "I'm really tempted to build the pilot a new shuttle. If we had
the luxury of time, it'd be easier. Okay, you're in charge of the shift here. I saw the exchange
with the Cadet. If anyone isn't useful in this repair, send them back to Priscallia back in Main

the Captain's going to want this repaired as soon as possible, so we'll be working around the

He was still in flight control, having answered a number of questions concerning the shuttlecraft
and outpost he had been assigned to. Every so often one of them would add an additional query
as they received instructions. Hestin felt pumped dry of information though each time queried he
seemed to find a little more to tell them, an "I don't know" was seemingly never an obsctacle as
they managed to find ways around blocked information.

His eyes swept over the bay again and he noted that a number of individuals were crawling over
the shuttle with more having just arrived.

He stood to his feet. "Is it permitted for me to take a walk?"

The second flight officer looked over at him. "That isn't a problem, you aren't in custody. Just be
advised that this ship has a number of sensitive areas and as a civilian you should have an
escort. Where are you interested in going?"

The romulan pointed to the shuttle bay. "The craft I came in on. I can see that you have some
people looking at it and they may have questions."
The officer looked out and nodded. "Are you sure you wouldn't rather have a meal and a bunk?
They are assigning you a room now."

Hestin gave a tired but grateful smile. "After I talk with them would be good."

The crewman got out of his seat. "I'll walk with you." He motioned to another one of the four who
were currently on duty. "Take overflight operations for a few minutes."

"Sure thing."

Having made the arrangements he led the way out the door and to the flight deck.

Hestin followed, willing his tired legs to keep up the pace, crawling around through ducts and
vents aboard the station to avoid patrols had been a nerve wracking and draining experience,
the adrenaline of the chase and being rescued had worn off and he was due to crash soon...
hard.

"Lieutenant." His escort had made it to the target area. "Mr. Ivogny wanted to be available to

Tegian was back outside the shuttle, making notes on the Padd and reviewing everything
coming from all the other Engineers. The engines were almost shot. The coolant system had
failed a few times and that had had a cascading effect on other systems. They could repair it,
but it'd never be the same again. It'd be better to just replace it. And probably quicker, too.

Communications and sensors had been shot off. The shield array had been damaged. That
too, might be better to just replace. Tegian was half tempted to suggest providing the pilot a
new shuttle, when he heard a voice from behind him.

"Lieutenant." His escort had made it to the target area. "Mr. Ivogny wanted to be available to

Tegian corrected the man. "They are called Xenolithe. And we've already noted the missing
communications and sensor node. And the severe damage to your shield array."

Ivogny interrupted Tegian before he could continue with the list. "Yes and one other thing, the
engine coolant system nearly gave out on me. I'm not sure if it's a peripheral result of damage or
it was just being pushed too hard. The latter is a high probability."

Tegian smiled, patiently. The man must be exhausted. "Your engines are almost useless. Your
coolant system failed a few times, but somehow managed to keep going. But, there were
cascading issues in other parts of the engine. We haven't pulled them apart as of yet, but I think
you took a hit to your engines. Once I have a complete list of the damage to your shuttle, I'll

Had he been swaying on his feet? He supposed it was possible. When had he last slept?

"The insects attacked us early yesterday, just after breakfast." His attention was slipping as well,

"Once again thank you. To answer your earlier point I think I'm luckier than good or they were

He WAS swaying on his feet, he realized. He had to catch himself with one hand against the hull

The Romulan caught himself on the hull of the shuttle since Tegian's hand on his arm didn't
seem to be sufficient. He then excused himself. "I should be going now."

"Of course. You've been through quite a lot. Feel free to check back on our progress whenever
you feel up to it. I don't think this is going to be a quick fix, however," warned Tegian.

The flight officer also thanked Tegian. Everyone was being very polite. "Thank you Lieutenant,

Tegian nodded. "Good luck getting him to his quarters." Tegian turned back to the shuttle and
sighed.

He hit his combadge. =^=Lieutenant Pex to Captain Sekal. Captain, I have an assessment on

ancient. Honestly, I'm tempted to build the pilot a new shuttle. It might be easier. But, I

"Do you need assistance Ms. Lannis?"

Carol turned slightly as she focused on the life form readings using the tricorder.

"Yes Lieutenant. If you could fire here..." she walked forward twenty feet then made a mark with
her foot on a piece of ground then drew a line with her toe toward the southwest. "The first spot
is the location and the line the direction I need you to fire along. Try a full power burst for two
seconds at a fifteen degree angle please."

She didn't understand at first then figured out that the phaser blast was to make a hole in which
to start digging a trench. She executed the request as told. The blast did the job but she
probably could have dug a better trench with the Batt'leff. It didn't matter for the blast was
sufficient.

"I understand now. How do we proceed?"
Carol looked into the partial hole that was still hot, the beam hadn't been on long nor had it dug
far but was sufficient to calculate from, she rechecked her tricorder as she knelt in front of it.
"That's good. A good start."

She stood up and let the tricorder hang at her side as she turned to Trei.

"We are going to carve a tunnel down to the bunker which is 50 meters to the southwest and 20
meters deep. Their exit was blocked by rubble from that collapsed building." She point to a large
pile of synthecrete and metal to the south. "We are going to make a new entrance so that it
doesn't cave in on them."

"Like this." Carol pulled her own sidearm and set it to maximum, carefully angled it then set off a
five second burst. After taking her finger off the firing stud she lowered the weapon and
crouched to look into the smoking hole. Once again picking up her tricorder she scanned again.
"That went about twelve feet. Try another five second burst please."

Carol stepped back, out of the way and tapped her com. "Raptor, I need you to tell the survivors
to make their way to the far western side of the bunker. We are tunneling to them."

=^= I will do so immediately.=^= Came the voice of William the Android through her comm.

Ariel did as instructed. She did one 5 second burst after another until a sizable hole had been
formed. She turned to Carol for further instructions.

"How is that?"

Lannis had been monitoring her tricorder. "You're doing great. We may have to adjust a bit near
the end but you are at 20 meters. There is a dense rock layer ahead. Try two, ten second
bursts."

Ariel did as instructed. It was like a dragon trying to melt through rock. It was satisfying in a
stress relieving way but also to complete the practical purpose. She usually played a wizard in
D and D when a group was playing but she could easily play a barbarian well. A gold
dragonborn would be her choice to play. The feature of breathing fire once per encounter was
very appealing to her.

"How does that look?"

Carol nodded. "We are getting close. Once the tunnel cools down we can go in and finish the
job."

She walked up then crouched down to look inside, it angled down into the earth, the soil had
been fused and even here, at the outside edge it would take several minutes to cool enough to
enter. She stood and saw the security chief walking up as she turned.

As she went to question them her comm ine chirped. She stopped and opened the channel.

=^=Commander T'Mur, sensors show that there are about three dozen life forms, mostly
romulan in that bunker. However, Luma is telling me that there are a number of spaces where
she has no telepathic sense. She can sense the few that are above ground, but not anyone
below the ground. Can you have someone take a core sample so we can examine it at our
leisure?=^=

T’Mur was gratified to hear Sienna’s voice in command mode. She repressed a smile and
replied, “Roger that, Commander. That would explain why Trei was unable to read anyone and
yet they are still digging a tunnel down to the bunker. I will have them collect a sample for you.”

She raised an eyebrow at the word “leisure”. “Analyzing soil samples might not be how I would
choose to dedicate my leisure time. But I believe I understand what you wish.”

(reply Sienna)

She made her way back to the team digging. “Lieutenant? Chief? How is your tunnel
progressing”

(reply Trei, Linnis)

“Do you have an estimated time of completion?” she asked.

(reply Trei, Linnis)

Once again her comm channel chirpped. It was Dogan.

=^=Lt. Commander, we have some motion coming towards us. Three figures. Not
Romulan.=^=

T’Mur nodded, “I understand. Do not engage unless necessary. I wil be there shortly.”
She closed the channel and looked at the pair digging. “Keep going. Hasten your efforts. We
will do what we can to keep this area clear.”

She continued to dig the tunnel as ordered but felt she would be more useful defending their

were helping Romulans escape a bunker was not lost on her. She trusted Romulans as far as
she could spit which wasn't very far. She will help the Romulans but be guarded. She was the

The CO hit the comm once more. "Commander Solice, Dr. Stev... has the autopsy report on the

(Reply: Solice, Stev)

"Forward it to me when ready. We have received no notice of casualties from the away teams
due to the confrontation on the surface. Between fighter sorties and marine fire that enemy
contingent was quickly dispatched. The bridge has also been notified that the bunker where 37
of the survivors are trapped has been found and emergency teams are cutting a new tunnel to

(Reply: Either)

"Sir! The Canopis has achieved orbit and signals that they are ready to transport one aboard.
They request our officer be ready for immediate recall."

"Notify the Canopis that the exchange will take place in two minutes."

"Aye sir."

The vulcan actuated the comm again. "Mr. Montero, report to transporter room 2, you have 2
minutes."

=^= On my way.=^=

Sekal signed off and turned back to the viewscreen. The Canopis had taken a higher, slower
orbit and reflections from the ships metal skin winked ahead against the velvety backdrop of
deep space outside of the planet's atmosphere. The Raptor was gaining on it quickly and had
rounded the spherical curve of the atmosphere to bring it into sight.

"Transporter room signals ready."

"Energize." Victor Montero had requested a transfer suddenly, having given no reason behind it.
Owing to the fact that a replacement fresh from the academy had been en route his request had
been granted expeditiously.

"The transporter chief reports that one has beamed aboard. Montero ready to depart."

"Permission granted."

Now to turn his attention back to the matter at hand. "Have the new officer report immediately."

"Acknowledged." William the android opened a hail.

Stev had just cracked the abdominal cavity of his subject when the captains voice piped in

=^=Commander Solice, Dr. Stev... has the autopsy report on the xenolithe been completed?=^=

The Bajoran used his peripheral vision to check the chronometer and frowned.

“Kylle here, Captain,” Stev replied. “I barely started. I could probably get you my preliminary
findings within an hour. But a full autopsy report? That’s going to take some time still. What I
can send you is incomplete. Chemical analyses and deep tissue scans will still take a couple of
hours.” He paused for a moment then asked, “What’s the news from the surface? When should
we expect casualties?”

"Forward it to me when ready. We have received no notice of casualties from the away teams

Quinna sat at the nurse's station as she monitored the progress of the little girl. She had
determined that the girl was approximately 8 and a half, and a full-blooded Romulan. She
thought about calling Tavay in. Perhaps someone of her own race could be soothing to the little
one when and if she woke.

Quinna then got a call from the Captain about the autopsy. Dr. Kyllee managed to answer
before her but Quinna was able to hear the reply. She looked around at the nurse, “I am going

“Yes, Ma’am.” Was the reply. And Quinna moved on to autopsy.

Stev had removed the Xenolithes stomach and had begun to analyze its contents when he
heard the door to the room open and close.

~What is the purpose of a secure room if anyone…~ Then he heard Quinna’s voice and
relaxed.

“Dr. Kyllee, everything ok?”

“Oka?” he asked. “I suppose so. If people would leave me to my task.” He realized that his
comment was more on the rush that Sekal had unintentionally proposed with his
communication, and not with Quinna. She was, most likely, medically curious, as he was. “I’m
just trying to finish up my preliminary findings for the captain. I mean, honestly, these things
can’ be rushed. I want to be thorough and complete. This is stuff nobody has seen before, at
least to the best of my knowledge. For a Vulcan he was almost… impatient.”
“I am at your disposal.” Quinna offered.

Stev looked over at Quinna and smiled. “I’m almost finished with the abdominal cavity. To be
honest the similarities with most species digestive system is staggering, if not a little simplified…
and complicated at the same time. Three stomachs. I’m analyzing their stomach acids now.
The mesenteron is intriguing. I mean just look at the microvillae. It shows a transition from the
apterygotes to the neopterans.’ He looked at the almost lost look on Quinna. “It’s another piece
of the puzzle. I believe that the Xenolythe may have, at one time, been a flying species. For
what ever reason the wings seemed to evolve away.”

He looked at Quinna, who was looking anxious, perhaps wanting to get her hands involved. He
sighed.
“If you really want to help, maybe you’d lke to dissect the head?” he asked. “But I should warn

“Hmmm… no,” he said. “Why do you ask?”

“Looks like our friend here has some cybernetics in, under the dome here.” Quinna told him.
Now she had his attention, “What?” He moved from the abdomen up to stand behind the CMO.

“Before you ask, they are not Borg in nature,” she said, showing him the tricorder readings.

“We’ll, now, that is odd,” he replied, picking up his own tricorder. He was curious why they
weren’t picked up by the original scans. “There you go. They show as inert matter. There are no
electrical signals at all. Perhaps they go inert after death. That might mean that they run of the

He picked up a probe and poked at one of the implants. It, disappointedly yet expectedly, did

The orders for her to report to the transporter room with her bag came while she was still in the
lounge. It seemed her time was now.

She was sure the sight of a blind woman running down the halls caused some to be nervous,
but not her business.

Pihi arrived at the transporter room as a man appeared on the pad. She looked at him as they
passed by each other. She gave him a brief nod and stepped onto the transporter.

Before she could say energize, she felt the warmth of the transporter encompass her. She
watched the different bands of wavelengths filled her vision as she left the Canopis.

As Pihi rematerialized, her com badge chirped. =^=Ensign Piripi, report to the captain on the

She looked at her bag and shrugged. There would be time later for her to stow her gear. She
ignored the look the transporter chief gave her. Either the VISOR or the tattoo were what gave
the chief pause. She was used to the surprise and her technique was to ignore their rudeness. It
generally made them uncomfortable and Pihi was ok with that.

Pihi took the turbolift to the bridge. The doors slid open, and she stepped onto the bridge. She
scanned the bridge and looked at the viewscreen. She’d be happier when she was flying rather

He turned his head to regard the new arrival and his eyes settled upon her visor without

“Ensign Pihi Piripi, reporting as ordered, Sir."

"Ensign Piripi." He took the padd she presented and unlocked it with his biosignature fingerprint,
perused it momentarily then inputted her assigned cabin number on deck 3, entered his
command code and uploaded the contents into the ship's databank. A flashing tell showed the
upload complete so he closed it out and handed it back to her. All of Ensign Piripi's vital data
was now in the mainframe and could be accessed by the medical department as well as
Lieutenant Grey Wolf who was her immediate commanding officer.

"Your cabin assignment has been included along with the room access key. Alpha shift is 0800

Nodding, he tapped the comm. "Lieutenant Pex, are there any updates on the romulan shuttle's

He waited through the laundry list of repairs that the shuttle would need while considering his

Pihi noted that the captain’s tone was a bit skeptical. He clearly had not read her file, or did her

could not tell.
“Don’t let the VISOR fool you, Sir,” she said, “I am cleared to fly all Star Fleet craft, both small

Pihi walked into the shuttlebay and looked for the pilot’s ready room. Walking into the space,
she grabbed a locker and put her gear in it for later before walking out to the flight line.

There it was – what a lovely craft. There was something about flying a craft solo, all the control,
your skills against nature. Different set of skills when compared to piloting a Starship like the
Raptor, but that was for tomorrow.
She was ready. She’d trained for this, even if Lieutenant Cavagnaro felt she was a bit reckless.
Even he admitted, eventually, she had the touch.

She grabbed a PADD and began to review the pre-flight checklist as she headed over to the
ship and the crew chief there, “I’m Kestral,” she said, looking over the man, “Captain authorized
me to go help Knight one and Knight two on their mission.”

The older man looked at the woman, cocked his head to the side, “This ain’t a joke,” he said.

Pihi watched his reactions. Was it the visor? Her tattoo? “What? You have never seen a blind
pilot before?” she replied.

“Let me confirm this, don’t touch my ship till I do,” he said gruffly.

“Of course,” she said as she began to walk around the fighter, looking it over and making notes

Taylor had been making some fine toothed adjustments to the tactical sensors to make sure the
area around the colony and around the Typhon Expanse, was free from any traffic. It was hard
to get a clear read around the expanse, which is why it had been mostly unmapped. Then this
strange woman stepped out of the turbo lift.

She was different, to be sure. And it wasn’t just how she looked, although that was unique.
Clearly human, but the first thing that stood out was the visor. He hadn’t seen one of those
since… well… ever, in person. She was pretty enough, but then she had this… tattoo on her
chin.

~Well she should have a couple of interesting stories to tell.~

But even the way she moved across the bridge was different. Perhaps it was her size. She was
barely over five feet tall, but she moved with a confidence that was incongruous. He had heard
that many shorter people over compensate with confidence because they needed to. It was how
they got noticed.

Then Andy watched as she presented herself to the captain. Pihi Piripi? There’s a name that
just rolls off the tongue. Still, she held onto that confidence. The captain welcomed her aboard
then dismissed her.

What transpired next was astounding. At least as astounding as anything got since their return
from the Rhyne with Michael Weston as captain. The pilot asked if she could help with the
support of the offensive and Sekal… agreed?

He was sure the captain had his reasons, and equally sure they were all logical, but even Taylor
though that this was odd. But who was he to question. He may have been just a little jealous at
the idea she was going to get a chance to blow something up, and he was going to miss out.

As she headed off the bridge he watched as she smoothly moved across the deck plating.
Well… good luck to her.

The Captain didn't answer Tegian's initial attempts to contact him. It was 20 minutes later that
the Captain contacted him. During that time, Tegian had let the rest of his team work on their

the engine housing already disconnected and had anti-grav sleds positioned to pull them away
from the shuttle when Tegian's combadge chirped.

"Lieutenant Pex, are there any updates on the romulan shuttle's condition?"

Tegian repeated the litany of repairs the shuttle needed, including his estimate.

The Captain's response took Tegian aback. "A full repair would take a minimum of one full week

"Captain, if we relaxed, yes. I had assumed that we would work around the clock with a six
member team. If we did that, I believe a day and half at the earliest, but more likely two days.
I'm pulling the engines at the moment, Sir," explained Tegian.

The Captain's next response really surprised Tegian, considering that Tegian had fixed another
