PREMISSION>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(TSV IXtar - Deck 1- Bridge- Commanding Officer - Commander Quarfle Taregot - 0946)

Quarfle Taregot had been grumbling all day. This was not his kind of survey. Using untried equipment
to find a needle in a haystack was tedious and time consuming. He was paying minors to sit around
and clean their teeth while these… scientists did whatever they did. It had been days, and he was
beginning to wonder if the risk was worth it.

Then he considered what they might find and decided that he would give them one more day. Then he
was going to deposit them on one of these barren rocks and go find a nice yield of duranium to
excavate.

A smile was just starting to form on his lips she a cry shot out behind him.

“I think we’ve got it,” Ghorg said. “There.”

He pulled up a chart of the area and circled where he wanted them to go.”

“There?” Ghorg replied. “There’s nothing there but class L planets and protoplanets.”

“I’m telling you, it’s there,” Ghorg assured him. “I’ll bet my shares on it.

Quartile grunted and turned to the Tellarite at the helm. “Get us over there. Now.”

If Ghorg was right they were all about to get very rich.

=^= Success! =^=

The report from the miners was already coming in. They had found what they were looking for and had
already started to harvest their findings. Quarfle was no scientist and had little patience to understand
them. But he did understand the importance of what they were looking for. It could change the
economic structure of the quadrant if the Tellarites had control of the supply of the ore.

“That is excellent,” he grunted. “How long before you can start transporting your load to our cargo
bay?”

=^=Soon. Maybe a couple of days. We’ve had a few issues to be sure. Equipment malfunctions.=^=

The miner began to scratch at his ears, like a dog after a flea. He suddenly became aware of his action
and stopped.

“Is the atmosphere causing the problems?” Quarfle asked.

=^=Can’t say. I wouldn’t think so. We protected our equipment from any radiation that might create any
interference. The atmosphere should only affect us, and we have taken all precautions. If I didn't know
any better I’d say it was sabotage. But who here would do that? =^=

~Yes, but you are an idiot.~ He did not say that out loud. “Let me know if we can assist you in any
way.”

=^= Snort, I seriously doubt that you are qualified, Commander. I’ll contact you at our next window.=^=

(Tellar Prime - Shirgat- Tellarite Science and Engineering Command - Head of Special Missions -
Karran - 1627)

The buzz of activity through the room felt like insects on the skin of Karran. He was already irritated by
the fact that stocks on this mission were already plummeting. But it had been nearly two Tellar cycles
since they’d heard from the Ixtal. It didn’t matter that the captain of the ship was an idiot. It was one
thing to be drunk for a few days, but for two weeks.
“This is Tellar calling the Ixtal,” the continued hum droned through the room. “Come in Ixtal. Report
your status.”

It was no longer a live voice. After two days they had recorded the message and set it go out on a
continuous loop. Periodically he asked for the feed to be turned up so that they were certain the
message was going out was consistent. Tellarites were known for their gruff attitudes, but they were
neither foolish or careless.

“Any response, at all,” Karran growled.

“No, sir,” came the immediate response.

Then from the other side of the room there was a snort of someone trying to get attention. “Wait… I
have something coming in.”

“Put it on the screen,” Karran ordered.

The screen flickered and a grainy image came on it. “The feed is being affected by the gravitational flux
created by the proximity to the gas giants of the Zertos system. Trying to clean it up.”

Soon the image became clear enough to see. What they saw was a shock. A single Tellarite was
sitting in the command chair of the ship. He looked more dissheveled than usual. But it was the look in
his eyes that was most concerning. That and his surroundings. There were Tellarites laying on the
floor behind him. The bridge of the ship looked like something had exploded. Then the message
began.

=^= Ha ha, we found it. Orichalcum… and more. But the more… it was so much more. W’ve had
malfunctions. We’ve been out of contact with the survey team for days. I sent down a team to contact
them, but they were nowhere to be found. Ha ha ha. It’s almost funny, don’t you think. We have the
answer to all of our questions and then… =^=

The message stopped and the screen went blank. Karran looked around the room at the others. He
took a deep breath before speaking.
“Lock down this room,” he said. “Nobody leaves. Until we have more information anybody with any
information about this message can leave the room.” He turned to the communication technologist. “I
need to speak with Governor Taarg, now.”

DAY 1 - Stardate 2446.06.01>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(USS Illuminar - Deck 1 - Bridge - CO, Captain Sekal - 11:00)

“Incoming transmission, Captain,” operations officer Menzi said, his Saurian hisses and clicks
translated by the universal translator. “It is eyes only,” he added.

“I will take it in my ready room, Lieutenant,” Captain Sekal replied.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(USS Illuminar - Deck 1 - Ready Room - CO, Captain Sekal, Commander Sienna Verin, Commander
Dieter Gregory and Commander Quinna Solice- 11:03)

Sitting behind his desk, the Vulcan turned the screen on, “Begin Transmission."

The screen changed from black and Sekal saw the images of Admiral Forrester and a Tellarite with an
ambassador's symbol on his chest.

=^=Captain Sekal, Can you please summon your command team so I can give this briefing once. It is
code word clearance only.=^=

He gazed at the Admiral for only an instant before tapping the comm key. "Commanders Verin, Gregory
and Solice to the Ready Room."

A few minutes later, Commanders Verin, Gregory and Solice arrived and took seats. The images were
transferred to the main viewer in the ready room.

=^= I want to remind you all that this is classified material. I will let you know what you can tell your
crew and department heads shortly. First, let me introduce Ambassador Crasos lorin Brunn, Tellarite
ambassador to the Federation. He will be providing some of this briefing. Ambassador,=^= the Admiral
said.

The Ambassador began, =^=As you know, next to dilithium, the metal oricalcium is considered
especially important. Using it, we can increase the storage capacity of power cells 100 fold or more.
Of course, like dilithium, it is very hard to find, and until recently, it was discovered more by
happenstance.=^=
=^=Recently a team of our scientists, using new algorithms developed a predictive model of likely
sources of oricalcium. One such source is in the uncharted star system Zertos 81. A prospectors ship,
the Ixtal, was sent to this star system with a new detection system to see if they could confirm the
findings of our scientists. They succeeded,=^= he concluded simply.

Sekal folded his arms across his chest and settled in to ascertain what difficulties were to be involved.
This briefing was not being given just to share 'joyous news'.

=^=But that is when the trouble began, and we have lost contact with the Ixtal about two standard
weeks ago. They were prospecting on the third planet, an L class planet with a narrow band of
vegetation and little else to make it unique. They had reported the ionosphere was highly charged.
And while the ship was capable of planetary landing, there were no indications what had happened.=^=

Logic has served Sekal well it would seem.

The Admiral broke in, =^=Sekal, I know you and the Illuminar have been fielding some tough missions,
but your ship is the best science ship we have. I need you to go there and figure out what happened. If
this planet does have deposits of oricalcium, we need to get a mining colony set up so we can extract
this metal.=^=

=^=Under the direction of the Tellar government, Admiral. This is still a Tellarite operation. Our
governments have not yet entered any kind of formal negotiations with regards to this find and our
method of detection.=^=

Sienna raised an eyebrow as she listened to the Admiral compliment the crew. She kept her mouth
closed though.

=^=Your cover story is a simple search and rescue of the Ixtal. Confirming the metal is present is
paramount. The Tellarite have agreed to share their findings with you, so that you can confirm if the
metal is there. The cover, however, is that it is a new seismic monitoring device we are testing in areas
with high ionospheric disturbances.=^=

“=^=Do you have questions? =^=

"Negative, a comment only. As we are dealing with highly classified material and secrecy is paramount
I assume we will be enforcing an interdiction zone about the system to any unauthorized vessels.
Should we encounter a hostile craft Illuminar will be prepared to deal with it. And as Illuminar has
planetary landing capability, conducting the search from the surface as a mobile command base would
appear to be the logical recourse.

“Why the secrecy?” Commander Gregory asked.
The Tellarite ambassador frowned. =^=This is proprietary Tellarite technology. We do not want
everyone having it for free.=^=

=^=If there are no more questions,=^= the Admiral said, =^= Carry on. Make sure to check in with me
every 12 hours.=^=

The Captain gave him a look of interest at that order just prior to the transmission ending. Sienna took a
deep breath when the transmission ended.

Gregory spoke, “So what do we tell the crew? We’ll need Science and Engineering read into this, at a
minimum.”

“Not to mention our local Tellarite,” Quinna added. “Class L planets tend to have higher Carbon
Dioxide. Though livable, if respirators are not working appropriately, it can be easy for Carbon dioxide
poisoning to many oxygen dependent species. But also the easiest type planet to create Class M
environments.” Quinna supplied.

“Isn’t there a drug that we can inject crew with?” Gregory asked, “And what about Dr. Penn, he is a
Benzite and I thought they could deal with higher CO2 levels?”

“Well as for the injection, recent research has shown that use can lead to long term effects which
include irreversible respiratory damage, immune system deterioration by killing out bone marrow, and
some minor issues as well,” Taking a deep breath, “I for one am not willing to risk the crew medically.
Need I say more?”

“You’re the doc, Doc,” Gregory replied. “So respirators it is.”

He turned to the Captain, “Sir, how do you wish us to proceed?”

“Summon the department heads to the conference room for a preliminary mission briefing at 1300,” the
Captain replied. “In the meantime, Mr. Gregory assemble an initial away team and begin training with
the respirators and other equipment you may need in an initial survey. Dr. Solice will brief you on other
items you may need for survival on an L class planet. Lieutenant Commander T'Mur will head the
security preparations in concert with the marine contingent.” Sekal said.

Sienna nodded, “We are going to need the marines as well as security. This will be the first time the two
have worked together, so I anticipate some friction.” Her mind was working through the mess that had
just been dumped in their laps. “I wonder what they are not telling us.” She mused quietly, taking notes
on her padd. She looked over at the other two commanders and nodded.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(USS Illuminar - Deck 1 - Bridge - CO, Captain Sekal - 11:25)
Sekal took his seat. “Helm, plot a course to Zertos 81, warp 9.”

“Aye, Sir. Course to Zerto 81,” Montero bent over the starcharts, “Course identified, Sir. It will take us a
little over 3 days, Sir.”

“Noted, Ensign,” the Captain replied. “Set course and engage.”

The Captain turned to operations, “Notify all department heads and their staff that there will be a
mission briefing at 1300 hours."

“Yes Sir,” replied the Saurian.

Sekal settled back in the chair as the ship completed its turn and increased speed.

He could hear Commander Gregory over the shipwide comm making an announcement of the meeting.

(USS Illuminar - Deck 14 - Gym - FO Commander Sienna Williams-Verin and CSec/Tac Lt.
Commander T’Mur - 1128)

Sienna’s recovery had gone slowly but steadily. T’Mur was still not happy by her limited progress. Still,
everyday she got her up and into the gym. She was impressed by the increase in muscle tone. But
with her … appetite for sweets it was always a task to make sure that the calories went to the right
places.

T’Mur looked at the sheen of sweat that now soaked through Sienna’s shirt as she worked hard to do
the exercises that her mate had given her. Now was the fun part, combat training. T”mur made sure
to make her moves slow and deliberate. She wanted to build muscle memory. This was not a sparring
match with the marines. It was more like a dance.

Punch, kick, turn, Sienna slowly went through the motions with her mate. She hated the gym, hated the
workout that was required. That it was her mate that was torturing her, helping her to rebuild her body
was the only good part of all this exercise.

Sienna lay on the floor, her arms spread open in subjugation. T”Mur shook her head and smiled. She
leaned in to get her reward.
Suddenly their comm badges beeped.

=^= All senior officers to the briefing room at 1300 hours. =^=

T’Mur looked at Sienna with a touch of regret. “We must postpone the rest of this until later.”

Sy wanted to scream. Instead she held up her hand, needing a shower at the very least before this
meeting.

(USS Illuminar - Deck 5 - Sickbay - 3/O/CMO Commander Quinna Solice and SFI Lt. Michael Weston -
1130)

Michael had spent the best part of the last month trying to track down any mention of this Tholian Brief
with very little reward. He had to work slowly in order to avoid any suspicion as to what he was looking
for. That kind of patience was giving him a headache. He had gone to visit Quinna in sickbay for his
usual multiple reasons. Initially, the excuse, was relief from his headache. The second was he needed
a distraction, and Quinna fit that bill just right. And third, he just wanted to see her.

He entered sickbay and nodded to Kyllee, who gave him a half salute. Micheal couldn’t help but
chuckle at the doctor’s little reminder of their time together on the Rhyne. Stev indicated with his head
to the office. Michael nodded and moved over to the CMO’s office. He poked his head in the door.

“Ehhh, what’s up doc?” he asked.

Quinna turned his head. She had been working in medical files. Well she was pretending to be. "Hey
there." Quinna stood and moved over to Michael. "What to I owe the pleasure your handsome face in
my my office?"

Michael kissed her on the cheek, “Do I have to have a reason to see my best girl?”

“Oh your best girl huh?” Quinna gave Michael a wink. “I promise not to tell all your other girls.”

“To be honest,” he said, “I have a headache and hoped you could help me out.” He could already feel
the pressure behind his eyes to alleviate.

Quinna took a small breath, “Ahh I am your best girl at the moment.” Quinna went to her desk and
grabbed a hypospray. She then got Michael a glass of water from the replicator. Making her way to her
favorite chair she motioned Michael, “Come and sit down.”

Quinna followed him and handed him the water after he sat. “I want you to drink.” She commanded as
she moved behind him.
Michael took the glass and sat down on the chair. He took a long drink from the glass and felt the cool
liquid go down his throat.

“Now lean your head back and close your eyes.” But this time, Quinna had a bit of a pudge for him to
lean his head on. Quinna administered a pain killer through a hypospray. She put it hyperspray down
and then put her fingers on Michael’s temples. She slowly messaged them at the pressure points.

Michael allowed himself to relax as much as he could. Even after all these months on the Illuminar he
still maintained a sense of readiness and caution. But here, with her, was when he let his guard down
the most. He just enjoyed the feel of her rubbing his temples.

“Mmmm…” he moaned softly. “You’re my best girl for so many reasons. No matter what the others say.”

He turned his head slightly so his ear was pressed on her tummy and listened to the sounds of the
baby moving around.

“An active little tyke today,” he said dreamily. “She’s gonna be a gymnast.”

“She huh? You missed the major kicking to the spine. He may be a soccer player.” Quinna just said
he to contradict Michael. She really had no clue. Quinna then leaned over Michael’s shoulders and
kissed him. Quinna continued on her massage. “Michael, have you ever thought about making a more
permanent…” Quinna stopped. “Nevermind.”

“A more permanent what?” Michael asked.

Before Quinna could respond both of their comm badges chirped.

=^= All senior officers to the briefing room at 1300 hours. =^=

Gregory’s voice broke the mood.

“Well that is that. How’s the head? Any better?” Quinna asked as she moved around and sat on the
couch across from Michael. She put her feet on the coffee table.

Michael stretched his shoulders and neck, “Much. Thanks. I have a feeling this is a conversation we’re
going to have to finish, sooner or later.”

“I have no idea what you are talking about.” Quinna quipped. “Say, we have a few minutes. Want to
join me on the couch and make out?”

Michael’s eyes narrowed slight as he looked at the doctor. Suddenly he stood up.
“Doctor… move over.” He slid into the seat beside her, wrapping his arms around her.

(USS Illuminar - Deck 2 COPs Office - 2/O&COps CMDR Dieter Gregory - 1145)

After the briefing by the Admiral, Gregory had gone back to his office to start preparing for the away
mission. He grabbed a quick lunch while researching what he could find about Zertos 81. Next he
reviewed what was in the library about the metal oricalcium. He'd read about it in one of his classes at
MIT, but he was more focused on high energy particles. There was a professor there, but he probably
couldn't reach out to her to get more information, especially noting how testy the Tellarite ambassador
was.

He thought back to the comment Commander Verin had made about possible friction between the
Marines and Security. He had seen the two groups working together, so thought that might not be
such an issue, but this was more in the Marines wheelhouse than necessarily Security. He's have to
meet with T'Mur and the Marine Major Murphy to talk about a structure and the mission parameters.
He hoped everyone could be professional.

Next, he took one of the holodecks off-line for the away team to work together. Nothing like getting a

He ideally stirred his tea as he read and made notes before sending a dinner invite to Aggie.

Major Murphy was reviewing the latest results from the exercises that the Lieutenant had been running.
Things were looking good and the team was ready to take on most of the missions he had outlined in
his brief to command.

A message came in about a mission briefing at 1300.

He called out, "Temerity, we got an invite to the big dance. Shall we see what the fleet is up to?"

(temerity, IYW)

"Yes, I want you there with me, 'cause four ears are better than two. Go get ready," he said with a smile.

The Major headed to his cabin and checked his uniform, making sure his sidearm was charged, but on
safe. Wouldn't do to have any accidents.

“Look, I get it, its frustrating as hell to be a Marine wearing Fleet department colors instead of ours. I
know from personal experience what a pain in the butt it is when the only way to tell the difference
between Fleet and Marine ranks is the shirt color. And I know it sucks and feels disrespectful when you
are wearing fleet colors you get addressed by the wrong rank.” Then after a sigh that was a mix of
resentment and frustration he continued, “Screw it, wear the green instead of the gold, but keep the rest
and just blame me. But you let ME deal with the powers-that-be about it, Understood.?!.” Without
waiting for a response from the Marines about to go on shift in the Security Department, Charles
finished, “Now get your sorry butts to work, I’ll catch y’all later.”

Just then he heard Major Murphy’s voice come from his office, "Temerity, we got an invite to the big
dance. Shall we see what the fleet is up to?"

Charles stepped into the doorway of the Detachment Commander’s office, “Sir.?.” he started to question.
“Isn’t crap like that usually for department or section OICs only?”

"Yes, I want you there with me, 'cause four ears are better than two. Go get ready," the Major said with a
smile.

With a nod of his head, Temerity simply replied, “Yes, Sir. I’ll be there.” And turned and started
walking off singing an ancient Earth tune from the later 1900s with “I’ll be there” as lyrics.

“Major, Lieutenant,” T’Mur said softly, “it is agreeable to see you both again. I hope our training

Charles simply grinned. To get a comment like that out of a Vulcan to a human was often considered

Their conversation was suddenly interrupted by Sekal, who began to explain the purpose of the
meeting. When he mentioned Tellarites he gave a little inward shake of his head. He considered them
a most distasteful group of people. To their credit, they were honest about how they felt. A little too
honest. But usually they were just a gruff species and often argued just for the sake of the argument.

He remembered a time at the Vulcan Transportation Hub when he helped repair a computer system for
a Tellarite ship, and the captain kept arguing that the modifications were not what he had asked for.
Bohb had pointed out that he had improved to output of the computer by 18% by his modifications and
that it did not cost any more, The Tellarite walked away huffing that he hadn’t asked for better, just
fixed.

When Sekal mentioned a highly desirable material Bohb was intrigued. The list of those kinds of
materials was small, and hearing about the system he had already eliminated all but three of them.
However, so far, engineering and particularly R&D had not been mentioned yet. However, his
department was more of one that simply inserted itself, and he thought of something that might provide
help to the security forces.

Then it was Gregory’s turn to talk.

The Captain welcomed all as they entered, sipping on a glass of cold water as they took their seats. The hum

(Reply: Bell and Surak)

He signed off after the acknowledgements but time was passing them by and he wasn’t going to delay the
briefing any longer. Turning his attention to those gathered he began.

“We have received orders from command to divert to Zertos 81 and are en route to that system. A Tellarite
survey ship has gone missing and we have been tapped to locate it. Its mission is of a sensitive nature
therefore we have also been ordered to safeguard that secret as well. Any ship entering the system will need
to be contacted and diverted, by force if necessary. It must be noted that Illuminar’s sanction is to maintain
the peace however, as always, we must be ready to exercise force under extreme conditions. The material
that the ship was attempting to locate is of a highly desirable nature and the Federation requires its
existence and location to be classified. Commander Gregory will brief you on the material in question.”

(Reply: Gregory)

“The planet the ship was believed lost on will have to be searched thoroughly for signs of a Tellarite
presence and its atmosphere will pose a considerable challenge to operate in. Doctor Solice is aware of
these challenges and will make that information available here along with the necessary equipment and
specialized training needed in its use.”

(Reply: Quinna)
His eyes turned to his first officer then back to the group. “Due to the possible dangers present on this
mission security will liase with the marines to provide tactical overwatch of the landing parties Security’s

them an advantage should conflict arise. Lieutenant Commander T’Mur will be in direct command of the

Gregory listened to the Captain's introduction and waited till he turned the floor over to him.

Standing up, he activated the screen and an image of a bluish-green streak on an otherwise
non-descript rock took center stage. "This is raw Oricalcium ore. It is extremely rare, difficult to find
and highly prized for use in power packs and batteries."

Another image came on the viewer, "As you can see, powerpacks containing this metal can store 10 to
100 times the power of standard power cells."

"The Tellarites believe that this metal can be found on the third planet of Zertos 81, a relatively
unmapped and uninhabited system. As the Captain said, one of their vessels, the Ixtal, has gone
missing and we have been asked to locate the ship, as well as locate and confirm if this ore is on the
planet. We also know that the plant has a strong ionic field in the atmosphere, making transportation
down near impossible," he added.
Taking a sip from his cup, he continued, "I will be leading the away mission, starting at the last known
location of the Ixtal crew. We will be taking the Hillary down. I expect a 8 person security crew to begin
a perimeter search for the Ixtal crew," he said, looking at T'Mur. "I will need two science officers to
assist in screening for this metal, as well as two to three engineers to help lay out probes to see if we
can break through the atmosphere and begin transportation between the planet and starships. Add two
pilots and two medical staff, we have quite a crew. Specific assignments will be going out. Department
heads should make recommendations of possible crew to be included in the away mission."

He paused again, "Since the atmosphere is L class, we will be working in respirators. Dr. Solice will
provide details on the dangers of the atmosphere. I have also reserved holosuite one for the team to
practice working in respirators."

(USS Illuminar - Deck 1 - Briefing Room - Marine - 2LT Charles Temerity - 1306)

Once the briefing began in earnest, Temerity mentally took notes and prepared questions. Despite his
best efforts, Charles was not a note-taker per-se. If he was writing notes, he wasn’t paying attention to
what was said. If he paid attention to what was being said and note write down any notes, he could
confidently recall almost 85% of what was said.

So far, as the briefing proceeded, there was something that made Charles uneasy. It wasn’t the inherent
danger of the mission, that was just par for the course, but the information that was given so far. The
format and how as it went on more and more of what was deemed classified or secret than wasn’t. In his
mind, the whole thing reeked of SFI tomfoolery.

Charles took a moment and reminisced about his last mission before he retired from the corps. It was
supposed to have been just another run-of-the-mill disaster relief mission that SFI had made
predominately classified or secret. Roughly half of his detachment had been killed because vital
information had been kept from those on the ground. The very next mission, Gunnery Sergeant
Temerity insisted that the analyst that worked the intel join the mission. The analyst was killed,
amazingly it was not by friendly fire. Though, at the time, Charles would have happily murdered the
idiot. It was then he had decided intel analysts were like meteorologists of the 20 and 21st centuries; able
to get it completely wrong and still have a job.

As the briefing continued Charles viewed out of the corner of his vision T’Mur lean over to Murphy and
he overheard their interaction. After which, Charles watched as Murphy leaned back in his seat.

Before he had retired from the Marines, Charles had been trained for a variety of types of combat but
built a career out of taking part in Search and Rescue (SAR) and Disaster Relief operations.
Unfortunately, there was always one thing that always managed to fall short to insure 100% of his fellow
unit members made it home alive and well. Starfleet Intelligence always considered themselves the
pinnacle of their profession; one could always tell by the sheer arrogance when they dealt with anyone
outside of their professional community. They were notorious for withholding some piece of vital
information that would be needed to ensure everyone’s safe return from a SAR or Disaster Relief
mission. And Temerity was afraid it was happening again. Only difference is now he felt he MIGHT be
able to do something about reducing the SFI induced hazzard.

"What is the time frame before we reach the system?" the security chief asked.

The commander replied, "Approximately 2 days."

Glancing from T’Mur to Murphy and back, Temerity raised his hand to ask a question not sure if it was
his place to do so. As an NCO, Temerity always felt it was part of his mission to ensure the safe return
of all the people deployed with him, and Fleet Intel (or lack of availability thereof) always worked
against him. Once called upon, Charles stood up straight and asked Captain Sekal directly, “Sir, does all
this information come solely from official Intelligence services such as SFI? Personally, I’ve been on
too many missions in which intel services decided to classify some smidgen of information that would
have been vital in the preservation of life.”

Nodding his head in acceptance and understanding that the captain can only use the information he has
been given, Temerity followed up with, “I understand, Sir. When this mission is complete, may I get the

truly knew what the Marine’s actual request was.

Michael sat back, listening to the briefing. He was reminded harshly about his current situation. He
was on the outs with the intelligence community, so his access to information was limited to what he

changing the economic politics of the Federation, giving the Tellerites a strong foot hold. Then the

T’Mur asked a logical question, of course. He had two days to find out what he could. Looks like he

he began, "I would appreciate that you discuss issues with my marines with me. Mr. Temerity has the
right to ask questions of the mission briefing, and I would expect you, Sir, would respect that." Standing
up, he turned to his Lieutenant, "Mr. Temerity, let us let these officers finish their briefing while we
prepare for the mission. I am sure," he said, glaring at Gregory, "That more information will be
forthcoming before we will be deployed. By your leave, Captain," he said, coming to attention and
performing a perfect salute. Holding it for three seconds, he drops his hand and headed out of the
briefing room.

She needed to use the Ladies Room pretty badly so she entered the restroom and went into an empty
stall. She asked Quinna to come with her. She had a few questions about how the ore will affect her.
She tried to relax and started to pee. It was a strong stream. While she was going she asked Quinna
her questions.

"How is the ore going to affect me with my unique physiology ?"

She reached mid stream and started to sigh in relief.

The Captain stood to his feet as the Major saluted then snapped, "you are not dismissed."

His eyes roved about the room, some had been in the process of standing and had dropped back into
their seats. Commander Gregory was bristling as was Major Murphy who had turned back toward him.

"Commander Verin has not spoken and neither has Commander Solice. As for where the order for this
mission emanates..."

He looked from face to face. "This mission was presented by a member of the Admirality and a Tellarite
ambassador and must be considered legitimate. Unless and until I have evidence to the contrary we
will fulfill our mission objectives and as for transfers from this ship...", he looked from Gregory to
Temerity, "transfers go through the Captain of this ship and no one else. I trust I have made my point
clearly."

(Reply: Gregory, Temerity)

"Major Murphy return to your seat please." His eyes softened not the slightest.

As the Marine sat he crossed his arms and looked to the doctor. "Dr. Solice do you have anything to

"Thank you Doctor. Commander Verin, you have the floor."

DAY 2 - Stardate 2446.06.02>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(USS Illuminar -- Sickbay -- Deck 5 -- CMO/3XO Commander Quinna Solice and Dr. Kyllee Stev-
0927)

Quinna walked around sickbay taking inventory. She had backed additional respirators for the journey
and felt she needed a few other things. She had one thing she needed to do before the mission.

Looking around the quiet sickbay she noticed Dr. Kyllee. At this point, she felt familiar enough to call
him by his given name. "Stev, you have a few minutes."

Kylee had spent most of his time since the announcement of the mission ensuring the respirators were
in perfect working order. It had been a task, but he didn’t want to leave it to chance. It was too
important. Fortunately, there had been no serious medical cases. Mostly bruised security and marines
from the training programs T’Mur had been putting them through. The one person he hadn’t seen was
T’Mur herself. For someone so small, she was one tough woman.

He looked over at Quinna and smiled, “Sure. What’s up?” He moved over to her.

"Everything has calmed down and we are healthy, right?" Quinna asked about herself and the baby.

Now he was curious, “If we’re talking about what I think you’re talking about, then yes, you and the
baby are perfectly healthy. You’ve been getting the rest I recommended, as far as I can tell,” he looked
at her suspiciously, “and the baby’s life signs are good. Why do ask… well, right now? What are you
asking at this moment?”

“I wanted to verify with you.” Quinna was glad that he just confirmed what she already knew, “Then
during this mission, I will be going with the away team. I need you to run sickbay.”

Stev stopped. His over-protective sense began to ring in his ears, “And you have, of course, lost your
mind.”
“Excuse me, Old Man!” Quinna quipped. “What is this? The Dark ages?” she knew he was referring
to the baby.

“You may be healthy, Little Girl, but that is no reason to send you into a hazardous environment when
you have a perfectly capable minion in your employ who can suffice,” he said. “You do think I’m a
capable doctor don’t you?”

“Oh, trust me, you are. So hear me out. An L-class planet is hardly hazardous. The Respirator is
more than adequate. I can physically handle the mission. The little jelly bean is safe with me. But to
top it off, it is the first mission with our medical shuttle. I am not going to miss it, but I am also not
planning to leave the shuttle either. Mr. Bell can be doing the grunt leg work.”

Stev grumbled to himself a little. He hated it when her arguments were sound and made sense. All he
could come up with was, “She’s more of an avocado than a jelly bean.”

“Soon you will be doing all the away missions. You will also be in charge of sickbay while I am on
Maternity leave. And I need to get this staff use to you in charge. I want to see any problems arise
while you are in charge so I can make sure things do not arise later when I do not feel like dealing with
them.” Quinna was positive that Aggie would be a challenge to his authority.

The truth was that he considered Quinna as much of a daughter as a friend. He really wasn’t that much
older than she was, age wise, but because of the 60 years he lost through the anomaly that led the
Rhyne into the Mirror Universe he was nearly 100 years older, chronologically. Quinna had managed to
fill the role of his daughter who died. His concern for her was real, but he knew he was being a little
over the top.

Finally he said with a harumph, “Fine. Go whereever you want and do whatever you’re going to do. I’m
only your doctor. But if you break your legs or die don’t come running to me.”

Quinna let out a sly smile. “Come come, Doctor. You know if I break my legs, I will not be running. My
Medics will be carrying me on a stretcher like I am the High Priestest of Persia.”

Stev chuckled and shook his head. He waved his hand at Quinna dismissively. “Go, have your
adventure. Just know that if anything happens to you I will only blame myself for letting you go so
easily. If you can deal with my self loathing then I won’t stop you. Just, try to be careful… your
majesty.”
Quinna turned to move on to her next task, “Remember you are only going to keep my throne warm. I
better not see my seat cushions reformed to your butt dents.”

“My butt cheeks wouldn’t be caught dead on your cushion,” Stev replied. “I’d get a new one so you
would have no idea how long I sat and lorded over your empire.”

(USS Illuminar - Deck 2 - COps Office - 3/O&CMO CMDR Quinna Solice and 2/O&COps CMDR Dieter
Gregory - 1100)

Quinna was going over the mission preps. She wanted to hold training for the away team and
respirator use. She stood outside of Dieter’s office and rang the chime. She hoped he had time for her
since she did not call ahead. She was so busy preparing that it slipped her mind.

“Come in,” came Gregory’s voice.

Dieter’s desk was cluttered with PADDs and on his screen was a mission plan. Well, part of one.

Seeing Quinna, he stopped. “Sorry Doctor, for the mess. Come in, sit down. Can I get you anything?”

“I am good. I was wondering if you had a final away team list. I want to hold a final respirator training.
Also as for Medical, I will be going on this mission.” There Quinna said it.

“Say again? What about Kylee?” Gregory asked.

“I need Kylee here. We know Agnes cannot go.” Quinna then stopped herself. “Wait a minute. Why
not me?”

“Um. Not to be indelicate, but…well, we don’t know the conditions and I would not want to risk your
child.” Gregory replied.

“As noble as that is, I am in perfect health. Being Pregnant is not a disease, you know.” Quinna
started, “Commander, do you believe that I cannot perform the job as a Chief Medical Officer? In any
way have I shown an inability to do my duty to this ship and Starfleet?” Quinna inquired in a little bit of
a stronger tone than normal.
“Not at all Doctor, not at all. I am doing a risk assessment for the mission. Why increase potential risks
that can be avoided? The regulations do recognize that accommodations should be made for pregnant
crew. And that is what I am doing,” he said.

“Oh, so I am a risk? I see.” Quinna said, “I have never asked for accommodations. This pregnancy is
not preventing me from doing my duties.” Quinna started. “But you know what really sucks…” Quinna
paused for a moment, “It sucks that I am being treated as a disabled person. As for biohazards, the
baby is more protected in me.” Quinna turned. “You of all people pulled the pregnancy card on me?”

“You are not a risk, Quinna. However, we are going to a suboptimal planet, where we have to wear
respirators. If the equipment fails, the child is at risk. I am not even considering biohazards.” He
paused thoughtfully, “I would prefer Dr. Kylee, but you are CMO and I respect your opinion.“

Quinna stepped back, she was not sure if she should be mad or hurt. Maybe it was both. She went all
professional, “Commander, I would never send a member of the medical staff to do something that I
would not do myself. You know I have poured over all this information myself. I programmed each and
every respirator for the away team and have packed 2 spares for each member. But sure take Kylee
instead of me.” Quinna turned on her heels abruptly to leave. As she thought about it, if she did not
leave, she may say something she may regret.

“One minute Doctor, before you leave. I think you may be misinterpreting my reasoning. You have a
primary duty to your unborn child. You’ve given up alcohol and caffeine as those may harm the fetus.
How are my concerns of putting you in a risky environment any less than that? And while you would
not ask anyone to do anything you wouldn’t do, let me ask this hypothetical - would you have gone into
the Sharlayan engineering room, full of radiation, while carrying a child?”

He paused, “Don’t you think I want you there? You’re the best doctor I know. But I don’t want to lose
you or lose the child. I am being selfish here, Quinna. I could not forgive myself if something happened
to either of you while we were on the planet. I’ve lost crew before, so if I can minimize the chance of
that no matter how small that risk is,” he said as he sat down in his chair. “If you feel that strongly about
it, you are on the team. I will be noting it is over my personal objections, but you, as CMO, assessed
the risk and accepted it.”

“Look, I appreciate the concern. I had such an awful first trimester, but I am good.” Quinna knew she
was going on the mission.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(USS Illuminar - Deck 2 - COps office - 2/O&COps CMDR Dieter Gregory - 1825)

Gregory looked up at the screen showing their trajectory towards the star system. He was busy
making last minute arrangements for the away mission. Noting they wouldn't be in orbit for several
more hours, he decided that the search would start at first light on the initial search area. He had
teased it out of the Tellarites briefing material, and hoped it was not a red herring. He sent a note to the
away team members to be assembled at the Hillary dock at 0525 tomorrow.

He was still unsure who medical was sending. He's tried to veto Quinna's participation due to her
pregnancy, but she had kept showing up for respirator training along with Dr. Kylee. He'd even talked it
over with Aggie, but they had not come to any conclusions.

Hearing the Captain being called to the bridge, he stood up and headed there as well.

Walking onto the bridge, he noticed the screen was displaying the Tellarite light explorer class. He
observed it and headed over to the Operations console. The Ensign on duty stood up to give him
access. He nodded as he sat down and put a receiver in his ear. He started manipulating the systems
and scanning.

"There is too much static on all channels, Sir," he called to the Captain, "Like the scanners, we'll have a
heck of a time hearing any distress calls. Makes me concerned for the away team," he added.

(Reply Sekal)
"I plan the first search tomorrow morning, I've notified the away team members to be ready to depart
the Illuminar at 0530. That will give us the longest light in the initial search area."

(Reply Sekal)

Expecting that Commander Verin would be arriving soon to take the first officers spot, he continued to
work on cleaning up the sensors as best he could. "Sir, I recommend that we launch two class 2
probes into the system, at perpendicular vectors, with a dedicated series of channels tied to the
Illuminar. That way we can triangulate any signals and use the carrier data to help clean up the
incoming signals and sensor scans."

Following the rundown from Science Sekal activated the popup screen on the chair arm and was
reviewing the data stream from long range scans which was being crunched by Astrometrics. There
was still a great deal of raw data but an overview of current readings on the system was coming
together.

"There is too much static on all channels, Sir," the voice was that of Commander Gregory, "Like the
scanners, we'll have a heck of a time hearing any distress calls. Makes me concerned for the away
team."

"We will evaluate conditions once within the system Commander but I already have someone working
on a backup contingency." The Vulcan noted.

"I plan the first search tomorrow morning, I've notified the away team
members to be ready to depart the Illuminar at 0530. That will give us
the longest light in the initial search area."

Sekal lifted his eyes from the small screen. "Noted. I will require hourly reports from the surface
concerning conditions on the surface as well as search efforts." His eyes flicked back over the data.

"Sir, I recommend that we launch two class 2 probes into the

He looked toward Gregory, retracted the screen and leaned back. "A logical.suggestion Commander,
make it so."

Time was running out. Captain Sekal had given her the task of resolving an ionic interference problem
and the ship was nearing the planet.

Zara had different ideas and run simulations, but the results were unsatisfactory. Down to her last idea,
the computer analysis gave her hope of success, but not 100%.

Sighing, she tried one last thing. After some reading, she had it! With several modifications, they could
use the transporters.

Zara had to contain her excitement so she didn't let out an enthusiastic whoop. She had to call Captain
Sekal.

Her hand froze over her comm badge. Zara was a junior officer, the most junior on board. It would
violate protocol for her to contact him. Calming herself, she decided to use the text feature in the comm
system, sending a message to both the captain and Lieutenant tha'Lanista.

"Sirs, this is Ensign Khatri. I have a solution to the ionic interference problem. I'd like to present it to
you."

She hoped she was doing this the right way.

"Noted. I will require hourly reports from the surface concerning conditions on the surface as well as

"Aye, Sir," Gregory replied, "Hourly reports it is."
Suggesting using probes to help address the interference issue, he felt the Captain's eyes on his back.
"A logical suggestion Commander, make it so."

department was concluded. He stood to his feet.

"Commander Gregory, you have the Conn."

Gregory stood up from operations, and walked over to the command chair. Even though he had been in
the command team, and had commanded the USS Rhyne on her ill fated adventure, it still took a minute
as he sat in the chair to reflect on the awesome responsibility entrusted to him.

"Aye, Sir," he replied.

"I expect to return in forty five minutes but contact me at need should the necessity arise."

"Of course, Captain," Gregory replied.

The turbolift doors closed as he sat down. "Put up the solar system and our trajectory. Also overlay the
two probes," he said.

The screen changed and the Zertos 81 system appeared on the screen. "Now we wait," he said softly.

Zara had notified the captain and her department head that she was ready to present her ideas on

Zara was confident her plans would work, but saying she was nervous was the understatement of the
year. Her stomach felt like it was doing somersaults. Her knees were shaking. While pacing and trying
