They began to wander as a group down a corridor. As they walked the scratching sound
seemed to intensify in T’Mur’s ears. She came to a sudden stop and the others stopped as well.

“I hear it too, Lt. Commander,” MacGuyver declared.
Then there was a flash of movement. The Vulcan turned her head and saw something skittering
in the darkness of a room. Suddenly specks of black moved across the floor.

“Back down the corridor,” T’Mur ordered.

Slowly they all backed up the way they came. The black marks followed them, followed by more
and more of them. T’Mur scanned them. At first they didn’t show up as anything known. Then
she magnified the view of the. To note that they were actually some form of insect. Suddenly the
scan showed what they were and where they were. She moved her tricorder up the walls as the
insects seemed to pour out of the seams.

She looked at the others and said softly, “Run.”

The group turned and began to run down the hall, back towards the transport box. As she ran
she looked over her shoulder. The entire hallway was now coated in a solid layer of black that
was following them, like flood water. And it was getting closer. The corridor intersected where
the transport box was.

Now the problem was where do they go and how do they get there. She looked at the controls
of the box and sighed.

“We can’t go back to the library and that is the only coordinates we know,” MacGuyver said.
“Anywhere is better than here.”

T’Mur looked at the controls and noted a blinking light. The words were incomprehensible but
the diagram was clear. That would set the machine to take them to where whoever last used
the box to leave went.

She looked at the others, “Is there any opposition?”

The noise that the swarm was making was now a roar. There was no option. She hit the button
and took a deep breath. Stepping in she felt the electromagnetic tingle and stepped out of the

The team had spent the last 15 minutes exploring the workings of where they had wound up. It
appeared that the transport box had sent them to ringworld which the Illuminar was
investigating. The fact that they traveled so far, in a manner so instantaneous was astounding.
Her first order of business was to contact Lt. Corday. To her knowledge he would still be orbiting
the asteroid waiting to hear if they had survived or not.

Unfortunately the distance was too great for their suit comms system. However, they had
access to the Illuminar.

“Away team to Illuminar.”

(reply Illuminar)

“We are now on the inside a maintenance area for the ringworld. It is difficult to explain how we
got here, but suffice it to say we have discovered how they transport from one place to another.”

(reply Illuminar)

“You will need to contact Lt. Corday. He is orbiting the asteroid and will need to be recalled.”

(reply Illuminar)

“We have lost the entire marine contingent of our party. Lt Corday has more details on that than
I do. We are attempting to find a way out of this area for an extraction.”

(Ringworld -Inside – DCO Ensign James Shaw - 1135)

The library's defense mechanisms were a marvel of unknown engineering. Floating discs
patrolled the airspace, each armed with a particle weapon distinctly unlike anything in the
Federation's arsenal or the Klingon Empire's disruptors.

One such device swooped perilously close to Ensign Shaw, obliterating the tricorder to which he
had attached an optical scanner. As the threat escalated, the security officer retaliated, firing
upon the intrusive drones as they swarmed into the room.

In a flurry of action, Shaw scrambled to gather his remaining equipment. He snatched up
another tricorder and hastily bundled his kit, crouching low to sprint towards the exit while
Boyles provided covering fire. "That's done it! Get to the rest of the team!" Boyles shouted over
the chaos.

James Shaw needed no further prompting, darting to the exit and pausing momentarily for the
cadet and Boyles. The cadet, paralyzed by the sudden onslaught, required Boyles' urging to
move. Shaw reflected grimly on the harsh realities of field experience; it was invaluable, yet
perilously fatal for some.

Regrouping with the Commander amidst the unfolding pandemonium, their hopes for a tranquil
exchange of knowledge were dashed. The library's serene pursuit of wisdom had rapidly
devolved into chaos.

Finding temporary refuge on the ringworld, the team sought momentary respite. While the
Commander attempted communications with the Illuminar, Shaw distanced himself, engrossed
in the data salvaged from the spared tricorder. He pondered the extent of the information
successfully transmitted back to their shuttle.

Absorbed by the enigmatic sphere of knowledge within the tricorder's data, Shaw was
particularly intrigued by the unusually high concentrations of quarks detected on the system's
surface. The complexities of quantum physics eluded him, hinting at a level of quantum
computing far beyond the Federation's current understanding.

Surveying their surroundings, Shaw likened the expanse to the interior of an immense Jeffries
tube, its walls festooned with pipes and conduits adorned with inscriptions in an ancient script.
"Is the atmosphere breathable here?" he mused aloud, his question hanging in the unfamiliar
air, a reminder of their alien surroundings and the endless mysteries awaiting them.

With away teams out exploring, if fell to Ssvresh and the slightly reduced engineering staff to
keep the Illuminar ready for action.

Resisting his usual urge to be in the thick of whatever repairs and diagnostics were the order of
the day, the Selay Ensign made for a striking visible presence in the engine room. This more
static role suited his natural temperament to conserve energy, but he still felt the desire to be
doing something.

In between reviewing reports from a couple of minor repairs, Ssvresh had pulled up what limited
data was available on the structure the away teams were now surveying. The ability to create
on such a scale wasn't unheard of - it had been within thought about in various scientific schools
of thought on dozens of worlds for centuries - but to have actually done it, to have engaged in a
project on this scale... it was incredibly rare and Ssvresh almost felt a tinge of jealousy.

"Computer, of the remaining shuttlecraft aboard, how long has it been since their last inventory
and diagnostic testing?"

(Ringworld -Inside - 2O/CSec/Tac - Lt. Commander T’Mur - 1315)

The exploration of the inner workings of this ringworld was amazing, and yet similar. It was as if
they were moving through the underground infrastructure of a city, only with much more
sophisticated systems. They had to stop several times for the engineers of the group to look at
equipment and take readings. However, they all had learned to be careful about what they
touched from their experiences on the asteroid.

As they walked T’Mur picked up the sound of scraping metal. It was not the typical sounds that
they had become accustomed to hearing. She led the group towards the origin of the sound.
As they rounded a corner they met with the one thing she had not expected. The other away
team.
"Commander T’Mur," Torak called out. "Where did you come from?"

T’Mur had spent enough time among humans now to not answer this question in the most
obvious fashion, as he did not really mean her origin, but more immediate events and
circumstances. In an effort to be brief she replied, “We were transported here from the asteroid
we were investigating. I can clarify more later. What is the situation here?”

There was a strange transporter-like sound and all heads turned to see Quinna disappear. Trei
cried out, stating the obvious. Both Torak and T’Mur had their tricorders out and began to scan.
"Elevated lepton fields detected,” the Klingon reported, “alongside a muon flux registering thrice
the standard level, accompanied by tau neutrino decay."

T’Mur noted the same on her tricorder but had already begun scanning for Quinna’s life signs.
Pushing the tricorder to scan for its maximum diameter there was no sign of her life sign, nor
any other for that matter, besides those in their immediate vicinity. Oddly enough, there was no
reading outside the shaft that they were in.

“I have no readings for Commander Solice anywhere,” T’Mur stated. “Logic would dictate that
she has been transported outside of the range of our tricorders, or to a location that is shielded
from them.”

She looked around, “Meanwhile, we have not been in contact with the Illuminar since we
entered the complex on the asteroid. Have they heard from you?”

(reply any on the landing party)

T’Mur considered their options and finally decided, “We already know what is back that way. I
suggest we go back the way we came and go deeper into this maintenance area. We will
continue to search for Commander Solice and see if we can find a way to communicate with the
Illuminar.”

Lieutenant Trei spoke, “If what you say is true then CDR Solice is in a room by herself losing
contact with the team. Is there a way we can contact her to help her get out of there?"

“I have no readings for Commander Solice anywhere,” T’Mur stated. “Logic would dictate that
she has been transported outside of the range of our tricorders, or to a location that is shielded
from them.”

Torak's tone was grim, adding to the tension, "We're flying blind here, Lieutenant. All clues point
to Commander Solice being snatched away by an unknown force, a transporter-like anomaly.
And without her biosigns, she's a ghost to us."

Eager to cut through the despair, Shaw interjected with a spark of hope, "Commander, shall I
engineer a miracle with our tricorder? I bet we have enough odds and ends to cobble together a
signal booster—a trick I learned from O'Brien’s history of Deep Space 9."
(Reply T’Mur)

As they awaited the commander's decision, Torak broke the silence, "Our link to the Illuminar
has been dead since we docked at this alien asteroid complex. Have they reached out to you?"
"We encountered a beast at the entrance—Lieutenant Trei and Galk might recount it better. But
down here, our tricorders are as good as stones against the metal-laden walls," said the Klingon
officer, hinting at the dangers they faced.

“We already know what is back that way. I suggest we go back the way we came and go
deeper into this maintenance area. We will continue to search for Commander Solice and see if
we can find a way to communicate with the Illuminar.” T’Mur said.

“Commander, building on Mr. Shaw's brainwave, why don't we rig up a signal amplifier? With
Lieutenant Pex and Mr. Shaw, I can tackle this. A stronger link could leverage the Illuminar's
superior tech, flooding the shadows with light in search of Commander Solice—provided she's
still within our cosmic neighborhood,” the Klingon said.

Ariel agreed with the suggested action from T'Mur but before that she tried to scan for any
presence of Quinna. The effort proved futile for she sensed absolutely nothing. She should
relay that to T'Mur but T'Mur is a telepath too so she probably has felt the same thing. Still it is
better to be informed than not.

"CDR I tried to scan for any presence of Quinna and the effort provided nothing. What is my

Quinna managed to get the team back at the base of the stairs. Things were bad and were
getting worse by the moment. Quinna indicated that a couple of nondescript officers carry the
box. She had Galk and a couple of his team members bring up the rear. Torak, Bohb, Ariel, and
a couple of security take point. She was not into the debate on why she could not go first. Pex,
and Piripi entered with Quinna.

Before entering the room, Quinna could make out that there seemed to be various racks of
spare equipment and a door at the other end of the building. Familiar faces were in front of her.
A curious look dashed through her face as she saw a member of Commander T’Mur's team in
the room. As she passed through the threshold, a sensation of her molecules disassembling
and reassembling came about her. She that feeling all too well as she felt it every time she was
transported.

The team made their way back to the base of the stairs. They were on the move to meet up
with the other away team. Torak, Bobb, and her took point. She did not question the logic of
this and why Quinna stayed in back. She would learn this when it was her time to command but
her experience was always to take a head on position when facing the unknown with people
protecting her at her sides. They entered a maintenance room with a door at the end of the
room. Quinna passed through this door to where she did not know. Ariel consulted Pex and
Bobb to find out what happened.

(Ring World of Rephaim -- Base of Stairs – Ensign Torak, Operations -- 1335)

Upon successfully prying the door open with their quintessential Engineering Mk 1 prowess,
Ensign Torak, gripping his Mek’Leth with a silent gratitude for its formidable strength and
versatility, ventured into the corridor. His flashlight sliced through the semi-darkness, unveiling
the alien pathway ahead.

The air was tinged with an unfamiliar scent, peculiar even to Torak's keen Klingon senses. He
meticulously ensured there was ample space for the remainder of the away team to safely
withdraw into the newly discovered corridor, then unfolded his tricorder to assess their
surroundings. The walls, composed of a dense, enigmatic material, defied the tricorder's
attempts at penetration, suggesting the need for more advanced, potent equipment to breach
the alien alloy.

As the away team regrouped, following the doctor's directives, they pressed onward. The
corridor meandered left, flanked by an assortment of equipment, piping, and conduits—possibly
a storage area, Torak speculated. His eyes caught a door at the corridor's distant end.
The sudden appearance of another away team, led by Commander T’Mur, startled him; they
seemed to materialize out of thin air. "Commander T’Mur," he called out, seeking clarity, "Where
did you come from?"

Before a response could be offered, a peculiar, discordant hum—a transporter's call sign, yet
strangely altered—captured his attention. Torak turned just in time to witness Commander
Quinna's figure begin to fade.

In the wake of this unsettling development, Lieutenant Trei posited, "Commander Solace has
been transported elsewhere. We must ascertain her location. Any insights?"
Torak, eyes glued to his tricorder, announced, "Elevated lepton fields detected, alongside a
muon flux registering thrice the standard level, accompanied by tau neutrino decay." His
expression, a mix of concentration and concern, deepened as he monitored the rapidly
diminishing signals.

This revelation underscored the urgency of their situation, pushing the away team into
uncharted territory, both physically and scientifically, as they navigated the alien corridor in
search of their vanished commander and the secrets it held.

She listened to the information Torak was providing. She didn't understand all the science terms
but understood it enough that suggestested Quinna was in a room by her self and losing contact
with the team.

"If what you say is true then CDR Solice is in a room by herself losing contact with the team. Is
there a way we can contact her to help her get out of there?"

She could try to contact her telepathically but experience trying to contact one that is not
telepathic is futile. Quinna does not like to have her mind read or messed with empathically so
that option is out. She will have to get more information on the situation.

"Commander,” it was Shaw who broke the silence, “shall I engineer a miracle with our tricorder?
I bet we have enough odds and ends to cobble together a signal booster—a trick I learned from
O'Brien’s history of Deep Space 9."

T’Mur raised an eyebrow, dubious about the success of such an endeavor, but her crew needed
something to hope for, as most non-Vulcan’s did. It was an emotional condition that even she
had found herself clinging to at times, especially with Sienna’s health conditions so recently.
Even now she hoped that her mate could sense her and know where she is.

Torek added their own inability to contact the Illuminar since they entered the shaft. He added to
the engineer’s plan to build a signal amplifier for communications. It was a more logical
suggestion.

Finally she nodded, “Proceed, Mr. Shaw and Mr. Torek. Use Lt. Pex and Bohb to help.” She
turned to the security officer, Fredricks. “Ensign, go back up that ladder with Ensign Piripi and
check the path to the shuttle. Once we find Commander Solice I want to get us off this world
with as much haste as possible. We can regroup and try again later.”

“Yes ma’am,” Fredricks said and tapped the pilot and motioned her to follow him.
She looked at Galk, “Scout ahead, Lieutenant, take Ariel with you. Look for a likely path that
might lead us to where Commander Solice was taken. But do not go too far away. Check in

Quinna looked around the dark room. Suddenly a picture of T’Mur and her team was seen on a
dark wall. “Who are they?”

Quinna looked at the picture and then it animated into a video. They were in a room. She could
not hear anything but it did look like they were looking around and talking. “They are my
friends,” Quinna said. “We are from the same place.”

“Why are they here?” The voice asked.

Quinna thought for a moment. Why? What was the why? “Curiosity.” She started, “We are
explorers.”

“Explain,” the voice came out.

“We desire to find and learn about new places,” Quinna answered. “You are new to us and we
wish to know you.”

Unbeknownst to Quinna the Voice started to ask the same questions that the other team asked
in the library.

“Who is your creator?”

”My parents are my creator,” Quinna said.

“Where are your creators from?”

“From a planet called Earth,” Quinna replied.

“Are your friends from Earth?”

“Some of them,” Quinna said. “I would like to go back to them.”

Suddenly a red light flashed. It seemed to cause a slight headache. Quinna closed her eyes as
it was a bit bothersome.

“Why did you harm our menagerie?” Suddenly a picture of the dinosaur-like creatures dead on
the surface.

“They attacked us. They killed a couple of members of my team.”

“You were not invited. Time for you to go.”

This also sparked the memory of Shaw’s recounting of the automatic defense system that he
activated when he was digging into the workings of the library on the asteroid. Of course,
looking around where they were now it was less obvious. “Automation?”

"Yes, I did say automation. There are a number of automatons in a facility beyond this that we
investigated but avoided contact with. It is possible that some may be programmed to resist
intruders and we had no way of knowing what type of weaponry they might be armed with."

“Due to our previous experiences, I would imagine we should take great care in what we get
into,” she said looking at Shaw.

Then she looked at the size of the group. There were the eight that had come with her from the
asteroid. Then there was the group that Quinna had brought with her. There was enough crew
here for a small starship.

“The good news is that this maintenance area is quite large, and we all fit comfortably,” she said.

“I can imagine the size of whoever built this.”

“And their raw intelligence,” Bohb added. “A structure of this magnitude, and the complexity of
the systems needed to support life that we have already encountered is astounding. The fact
that, clearly, this world, or at least this part of this world, has been unmonitored for a long time,
and yet the creatures… what did you call them… dinosaurs?... are still thriving. Amazing, that
level of automation. They must still be getting fed, unless it’s a true self-sustaining ecosystem.”

The circles of life were not nearly as interesting to the Magillan as was the engineering of such
an artificial habitat.

The conversation was cut short but the interruption of a beep on T’Mur’s comm badge. The
sound that came through was static, with a few discernible words. But the one word that was
clear was =^=Illuminar.=^=

"Mister William, have you received a communication from the away teams?"

The android turned from the Operations console. "Only from the Magellan as noted before
Captain. The pilot had to lift off from the surface to avoid a confrontation with what appeared to
be a dangerous wave of small insectoids though scans were inconclusive. The away team on
the asteroid has transported away and their location is unknown at this time. Attempts to reach
the team on the ring have been to this point unsuccessful."

"You have detected no signals from the asteroid team within the system?"
"No sir."

"Doctor Gralen, your hypothesis? Could Lieutenant Commander T'Mur and her team have been
transported to the ring?"

Holis shrugged as he turned his head. "Possible but unknown. If they did then they could be
anywhere within the trillions multiplied by trillions of square miles of habitable surface area
within the ring."

The captain stood to his feet, crossed his arms then looked back at the betazoid.

"If we were to use the tractor beam to lock onto the metal surface of the ring, would it then be
possible to tie communications through it in order to reach those there?"

Holis' face grew a big smile. "Like a radio voice transmission you mean? Using the graviton
beam to cause vibrations that could be picked up by our transmitters..." the man laughed. "...
theoretically yes, it can be done. I should be able to send a carrier signal that will activate their
comlink. Give me thirty minutes to set it up."

"You have fifteen doctor."

Sekal hit the comm. "Ensign Ssvresh, assist science with setting up a communication signal link

Holis piped up from his console. "Fifteen minutes? What do you think I am sir, a miracle

It had taken a few minutes longer than the Vulcan demanded but not by much.

"Open the frequency Mister William."

"Open sir."

There was no initial reply, he looked to Holis who was already fine tuning his adjustments.

"Try again sir."

(Ringworld - Maintenance Area - CMO Commander Quinna Solice - 1415)

“Anyone Miss me?”

Quinna stood there. Galk had turned to see her. Quinna was curious why there was so much
more to her team than when she left.

"Yes Commander,..." He stepped toward her as he gazed about intently, "... you have been gone
a half an hour or more. Who abducted you? Did they identify themselves?"

As Quinna was about to answer, Quinna was taken aback by the embrace of T’Mur.

“Quinna,” she called out, holding her tightly, “are you okay?”

T’Mur released her. Quinna needed a moment to recompose herself.

“What happened?” T’Mur asked. “Where were you?”

“Ok, one at a time.” Quinna started. “I am fine. I was not hurt. I was transported to a dark
room.” Quinna took a deep breath. “The AI just asked me questions about who I was and what
I was. It showed me,” Quinna turned to look T’Mur and pointed at her, “Footage of you and your
team asking questions to an AI interface.”

Quinna then heard Galk. "I have no way of keeping someone from being transported away... or
determining who is at risk."

“I am afraid not,” Quinna said. “I was also asked about the death of certain creatures.”

T’Mur stepped back and looked at the Klingon, now fully in control of herself, “Indeed. However,
something must have activated the transport or someone. What did you find on your scouting
mission?”

Galk motioned Kisha over, took her tricorder and passed it to T'Mur, speaking as he did so.

"These tunnels and chambers run for many kilometers, more than we can scan. There are pipes
and conduits containing at least a dozen varieties of fluids, among them water, coolant and
lubricants. The mechanisms are at least as varied and appear to include fabrication and repair
systems."

“It is almost like it was created to make things self-sustaining,” Quinna added.

"In my opinion then a maintenance and repair level that may span much of the ring. The
automation is on a scale beyond my comprehension and the available energy within the
accumulators and live circuits could run dozens of starships."

“Automation you say.” Quinna seemed to state quietly, “Not surprised.”

“Automation?” T’Mur said.

"Yes, I did say automation. There are a number of automatons in a facility beyond this that we
investigated but avoided contact with. It is possible that some may be programmed to resist
intruders and we had no way of knowing what type of weaponry they might be armed with."

“It did seem like the system was more of a Deep Learning AI. There did not seem to be any

Andy Taylor had been diligently monitoring the progress of the away team until it had
disappeared from his sensor readings. Everyone had been on edge since they’d received the
news of the Magellan crew disappearing and fate of the marines on the asteroid. Then it
became scramble to reestablish the connection. With the help of the science department they
were able to reconnect communications with the team, but they were still unseen by the sensors

When he heard that T’Mur and her team were now on the Ringworld he breathed a sigh of relief,
sort of. The fact that they appeared to be trapped made him wish he’d gone with them. They
could have used his particular set of skills. However, he did recognize that he had to make a

He opened a comm channel, “Illuminar to Magellan.”

=^=Go ahead, Illuminar. Still no sign of the Lt. Commander and her team. I’m beyond a little

“Then good news,” Taylor said. “We know where they are. Somehow they managed to

T’Mur led the team through the complex labyrinth of the maintenance level of the ringworld.
She had been able to deduce the function of most of what they had seen. But many items were
outside of her area of expertise. Even with the eye of a collector of antiquities it was difficult to
really know how old this was. However, one thing that was noticeable was that nothing seemed
untended. Everything looked in good repair. There wasn’t even dust settled on any of the
equipment.

“I wonder who, or what, cleans this area?” she said to Quinna. “Other than the well kept
equipment there has been no signs of life.”

She watched as Bohb suddenly stopped. He had started to look at a piece of equipment, as I
big smile grew across his face.

“Commander Solice, Lt.Commander T’Mur,” he sounded excited. “I know what this piece of

Suddenly Bohb disappeared with a pop and a flash.

Bohb was walking along with Pex, discussing the technology that they were seeing on their way
to… wherever they were going. He was hoping that it would lead out, but in the same line, he
really wanted to dig into the equipment that he was seeing.

They had been discussing what could power such a tremendous undertaking of a…for lack of a
better term… station the size of this ringworld. Was it possible to transfer so much power
throughout the millions of miles that world encompassed from a single source. The easiest
source would, of course, be the solar power of the star that the world encircled. Collecting that
power in several capacitors in sections of the vessel would make sense. That was when he
noticed one of the panels between a set of tubes. His curiosity got the better of him and he
moved away from the group.

Pex watched him as he stepped towards the panel. “Tegian, I know what this is.”

Then he called up the two command officers. “Commander Solice, Lt.Commander T’Mur,” he
sounded excited. “I know what this piece of equipment is. It’s…”

Suddenly there was a pop and everything looked dark.

(Ringworld? - Location Uncertain - CSRD Lab - CSRD - Lt. Bohb - 1423)

“... a power transfer relay.”

Blinding light suddenly flashed in his eyes. When his eyes adjusted and the throbbing in the
back of his brain subsided, which took a minute, he didn’t realize where he was at first. Then as
his mind cleared… he still had no idea where he was. It seemed to be an empty, white room. It
was as silent as it was stark. He felt that there should be an echo as he walked around. But all
sound seemed to be baffled.

His first instinct was to tap his comm badge, but from Dr. Solace’s account, that effort would
have proved fruitless. Instead he pulled out his tricorder and started the auto-record. Then he
began to scan. There was nothing beyond the room. In fact, the room barely recorded. He
scanned himself, just to make sure that the device was functioning properly. It was. But all of
his scans beyond that seemed to be reflected back towards the tricorder.

[You are different.]

The sudden sound of the voice was almost deafening. Bohb looked around and began to scan,
looking for the source. “What?”

[You are different. From the others. You are different.]

“Well,” Bohb shrugged, “we’re all unique individuals, aren’t we?”

The voice was silent for a moment. [Unique? Different?]

“Yes,” Bohb continued, “all living things are unique. They all have their differences, even within
their species.”

[Mmmm… yes, we have noted that. But you. You are… more different than the others.]
Bohb had to acknowledge the fact that he was of a unique species in the group. “Yes. I am a
Magillan.”

[Magillan? I have no record of that species.]

“I bet,” Bohb said, more to himself than whoever was talking.

[What is bet? Is that your… name?]
Bohb chuckled, “No, my name is Bohb. And a bet is a wager or estimation of probability that an
occurrence will happen. Some species play games of probability, they call it chance. They offer
an exchange of chattel in the probability that a certain sequence of events will occur. It’s called
a bet.”

[So you will to… place a wager with me on what I have record of?]

Bohb laughed, “No, not really. It was merely an expression indicating that I doubted that you
had information on my people. We have been a reclusive people on Magilla Prime.”

Bohb could sense that the voice was contemplating what he had just said. It was a feeling that
seemed almost palpable. He found it strange, wondering if this was some kind of empathic
sensation. But was it from himself or from the voice? Magillans were not known to have any
form of telepathic ability.

[The Quinna stated that she was with people, and that she was with people. But you are not
people.]

“People is a broad term in our world,” Bohb explain. “I am not human.”

[You are Bohb?]

“Yes,” Bohb nodded. “I am Bohb.”

[Why are you, Bohb.]

Bohb thought hard about the question and suddenly realized that that pause, that comma,
changed what was asked. He smiled remembering the statement that commas can save lives.
In this case it just saved confusion… well, sort of.

“Explain,” Bohb said. “What do you mean by why am I?”

[Why are you here?]

“We’re here to learn,” Bohb said simply.

[What would you learn?]

“We want to learn more about who built this place,” the Magillan continued. “Your people. We
want to know who your people are, or were.”

[My people?] It was as though it were the first time that the owner of the voice put those
thoughts together. [Bohb, what are parents?]

Well that was an interesting turn. “Parents?” he questioned carefully. “Parents are the people
who create new biological offspring. Offspring are progeny of the parents.”

[You speak of procreation.]

“I do,” Bohb said.
[I would like to witness this… procreation to understand it better.]

Bohb just about swallowed his tongue, “That is not how it works. It takes time for a relationship
to build before two people are even willing to create a life form. There are lifelong expectations
for such an endeavor in most species.” Bobh thought for a moment. “Who created you?”

[I was created by… those who create. Those who gather and watch. We observe and take
note of behaviors. Your species is different. Unique. We would add you to our collection.]

Bohb frowned, “Well I don’t like the sound of that. I am a sentient being of free will. You would
imprison me as though I were a criminal?”

[Criminal? What is criminal?]

“A criminal is a person who commits unlawful acts,” Bohb explained. “That means the perform
acts that are counterproductive to the well being of society.”

Silence. A wall flashed and an image of the group appeared. He could see the obvious concern
on their faces. And T’Mur’s resignation to continue moving without Bohb. It was, after all, a
logical choice. The image hovered on the Vulcan.

[This one. What is she?]

“T’Mur?” Bohb said quizzically. “She’s a Vulcan”

[She is unique as well. Not as different as you. But different. She requires more observation.]
There was a flash and a pop.

(Ringworld - Maintenance Level - CSRD Lab - CSRD - Lt. Bohb - 1430)

Bohb suddenly reappeared with the group. Besides being confused he was curious. He believed
he’d learned much more about this place and those who created than the one who had pulled

“Artificial Intelligence!?” Pex exclaimed. “What makes you think that?”

“Some of the responses and next questions took, in my opinion, too much time to ask. They
had to calculate the next response if what I said didn’t make sense to them.”

“And what, exactly, did you say to them?” the Security Chief asked.

Bohb smiled, “Nothing that would compromise anything, Lt. Commander. They seemed more
interested in my species rather than what I actually knew. They want to… keep me… like a

“Indeed?” T’Mur siad inquisitive. “Which follows the idea that I had been contemplating since

sections of the world. Look at these power readings.”

He showed his tricorder scans to T’Mur, Shaw, and MacGuyer.

“What’s this here?” MacGuyver asked, seeing a reading in a corner of the screen.
Bohb looked at it for a moment then let out his breath in a burst. “I nearly forgot. I’d been

transported me back. It’s the energy signature of their transporter.”

Quinna thought momentarily, “You are right, based on our experiences, both Bohb and I came to

(Ringworld - Unknown - 2O/CSec/Tac - Lt. Commander T’Mur - 1437)

As soon as she had felt the pull of the transport wave T’Mur had activated her tricorder. She
hoped that it had activated fast enough to get some reading as to where she is now compared
to where she was. All she knew about where she was was that it was a stark white space. She
began to explore the space. It was so stark and bright she could not, subjectively, recognize the
perimeter of the space. So she decided to walk forward, straight, while scanning with her
tricorder.

[You are not like the others.]

T’Mur chose to ignore the voice as she continued to explore the room. Instinct made her stop
before walking face first into the wall. She reached out gingerly and touched it, inches from her
nose. Then she randomly turned to the right and traced the wall with her hand as she walked
forward.

[We wish to learn more about you.]

T’Mur remained silent. She continued to walk for several minutes, without hitting a
perpendicular wall. Stopping, she pulled a knife from her belt and laid it on the floor. Then she
began to walk again.

[The one called Bohb said you want to learn about us. Why!]

“Because that is what we do,” T’Mur said. “We are curious about others. I have observed that
many species have a need… a drive… to be part of something bigger. To make sense of their
place in the universe.”

She continued her path, touching the wall as it continued, still hitting no corners. “Why do you
want to know about us?”

[We too wish to learn. And to teach. So others might now what is. What was.]

“For whom?” T’Mur asked.

As she walked she noted something that marred the stark whiteness of the chamber. As she
approached it she recognized the knife she had dropped. She calculated the length of her stride
and determined that the room was about ten meters in diameter. Putting her back against the
wall she moved to her estimated center of the room and sat on the floor.

[For those whom wish to learn. To see. To know.]

“I understand that,” T’Mur said, almost challengingly. “But when was the last time someone has
come here.”

[Here? Only the evaluated are brought here. And much time has passed since the last. Over
one hundred spans.]

~Evaluated?~ T’Mur considered that a curious term. How, exactly, are beings evaluated. And
to what purpose? This… program… seemed to exist to create more questions than answers.
Direct questions were deflected. Inferential questions were ignored or worded around. Perhaps
a different tact was required.

“Show me my evaluation,” she ordered.

The wall flickered and showed the scene of the group on the asteroid. It showed Shaw digging
into the library access panel and their escape. Then it showed them escaping from the
infestation in the living quarters and figuring out the transport box. It focused on her face as she
made decisions to keep moving after Bohb’s disappearance. The scene flickered and she was
surrounded by the bridge of the Illuminar. It closed in on Sienna, sitting in the FO seat on the
bridge.

“Why do you show me this image?” she asked.
[This is something that seems to occupy a great deal of your attention. Why is this?]

“That is my life mate,” T’Mur answered. “We linked by a telepathic bond.”

[Telepathic?]

“Yes,” T’Mur said, realizing she had to explain telepathy, “our minds are connected. We know
how each of us feel and can communicate when we are close enough.”

[Interesting. You are different from the others. Not as much as Bohb. But still different.]

“Yes, we are all individuals,” T’Mur explained. “Bohb is from a different world. He is a Magillan.
I am Vulcan.”

[You are T’Mur from Vulcan?]

“I am,” T’Mur acknowledged, wondering how he knew her name, since she had not offered it.
[We wish you to stay with us. We will give you an appropriate biome in which to live.]
The screen changed again to show a hot desert. Not just a desert of sand but also of rock and
volcanic activity. It resembled the Forge on Vulcan, a place she knew well.

“I do not wish to stay,” she replied. “I need to return to my mate.”

[We could bring your mate to you.]

“No, that would not be satisfactory,” T’Mur stated. “She would not survive in that harsh a
condition. She is not Vulcan.”

Silence.

[Will you be harmed by not reuniting you?]

T’Mur nodded, “Eventually.”

Silence.

There was a bright flash and a pop.

(USS Illuminar - Deck 1- Bridge - 2O/CSec/Tac - Lt. Commander T’Mur - 1445)

When T’Mur’s eyes refocused she found herself on the bridge with Sienna’s arms wrapped
around her. The touch of her skin sent their connection into overdrive, and the Vulcan fought to
maintain her composure.

She managed to look around the bridge to see the stunned reaction of the others and that of
Captain Sekal. She managed a nod as she tried to extricate herself from her mate’s hold.

“Captain Sekal,” she said, “it appears that I have been sent back.”

Tavay and BJ were looking around together. BJ was walking around with her tricorder when
Tavay stopped her. “You might want to try and broaden your search parameters with the
tricorder.”

“Excuse me?” BJ asked.

“You are only scanning for life forms, but there are many things to be looking for like extra
energy signatures, unusual heat signatures, and other things that could indicate life other than
an actual beep of organic residue.” Tavay conveys.

“Thanks,” BJ replied and took a step away to scan using the broader scan. Her foot caught
onto something and landed on her face. “Ugh!” She cried out.

“Oye,” Tavay said under her breath. “Are you hurt? What happened.”

“Only my poise and grace are hurt but since I did not have much of that, I am fine. I tripped on
something here on the floor.” BJ said.

Tavay bent over and pulled on the object, but was thought to be a small thing, but ended up
being a handle to a door on the floor.

“Another layer,” BJ said.

“Another opportunity for trouble,” Tavay reached down and extended a hand to help BJ up from
the floor. “Let's tell the Commander.”

The two of them moved over to where Commander Solice, Lt. Trei, and Lt. Bohb were standing.
They seemed to already be in some sort of conversation.

“My apologies for interrupting but ...” Tavay said.

Bohb only cursorily listened to the coversation between Solice and Trei. He was intrigued that
Trei was sensing life, but there was no telling what kind of life it was, nor any evidence that it
was T’Mur. He had been under the impression that he had been transported much further away
than Trei would be able to sense. Now Mr Laredo, perhaps, but she had never displayed that
level of awareness in front of the Magillan.

He was more interested in seeing if he could figure out more from the readings he got from
T’Mur’s abduction. This was science he could rely on and use. He was feeling pretty confident
that he’d be able to hone in on a source when the second office was returned.
His attention was disrupted when Tavay spoke.

“It seems we found a door,” Tavay said.

“Yeah, there are a couple around us,” Quinna only stated the facts.

Solice’s quips, perhaps an effort to keep the situation light hearted, did not help to comprehend
what was being said.

“Although that is true,” Bohb added in, “I am certain that this door was probably more hidden.
Where is this door?”

“This one is in the floor,” Dr. Honeycutt said.

“Maybe we can find more answers on the next level. It is worth taking a look.”

“Agreed,” Bohb said.

“Lead the way,” Quinna said to Tavay

They followed the pair to an access port in the floor. Bohb took a knee beside the port and felt
around for a way to open it. Surely it wouldn’t be on the floor as well. Someone might open it by
accident simply by stepping on it. He pulled out his tricorder and found the power signature that
he had seen before.

He followed the signature to a plate on the wall. He gingerly touched around the plate, looked at
the others and shrugged. It was a rather large rectangular plate that looked as though it was a
pressure pad. He placed his large hand in the middle of it. It tingled on his hand and the door
slid open.

At that moment T’Mur’s voice came over the comm lines.

extricated herself from her mate’s grip. She made her way to the tactical station.
“I need to contact the away team and let them know where I am.”

She opened the comm line that they had set up to follow the tractor beam. It took a little
adjustment to make contact again.

“T’Mur to away team,” she started.

(reply Quinna)
“I am fine,” T’Mur reassured her. “I am back on the Illuminar. I cannot explain why, or how. In
my interview in the room I let them know that I would languish if not rejoined to my mate.”
She felt her cheeks warm slightly as she looked over at Sienna. Then she refocused.

“The next thing I knew I was back here.”
(reply Quinna)

“I have Bohb’s readings and my own from this experience,” she told them. “It will attempt to find
the source of the transport signal. If there is another abduction let me know.”

(reply Quinna)

The channel closed. She pulled out her tricorder and began to upload the data into her tactical
computer. She began to look for any pattern to the power fluctuations during the transport
system that had been used.

After eighteen minutes a pattern began to emerge. By the time twenty minutes passed she
began to see points of condensed energy throughout a network across the ringworld.

“Captain, look at this,” she said and displayed the network on the main viewer. “This is a
network of power nodes throughout the ringworld. But it’s not quite right. I can’t see it just yet,
but something is missing.”

After she had extricated herself from Sienna's embrace he walked to them.
"Doctor Gralen has taken a shuttle to the ring to begin a full anthropological investigation. Do
you deem the world safe enough for this?"

(Reply: T'Mur)

He nodded as he turned his attention to Sienna, she was going to be surprised at the
assignment he had received for her from command within the last hour which he had not
relayed yet due to the current situation. She had distinguished herself less than 2 years ago in
eradicating the Trill virus and another crisis had arisen which required her attention. A hospital
ship had already been dispatched to rendezvous with them which she would be commanding
during that mission as Illuminar continued hers.
"Commander Verin, I will need to speak with you shortly."

He turned his attention back to T'Mur. "You will direct the withdrawal from the ship and recall
Gralen's shuttle, I want the teams extricated immediately. There has been too many lives lost at

methods of gaining access to the ring safely."

T’Mur shook her head, “It was not by design, Captain. Whoever, or whatever, is controlling that

detrimental effect on my health.”

"Doctor Gralen has taken a shuttle to the ring to begin a full anthropological investigation. Do
you deem the world safe enough for this?"

She shook her head again, “Negative. Although I do not believe that anyone was harmed
intentionally, I believe that we are not yet prepared for what we might find over there. It is my
belief that what we encountered was, what we call in your Forge simulation, level one. If we had
known what to expect I do not believe the results would have been as catastrophic.”
She paused for a moment then added, “I would not make the same assessment about the
asteroid. There was no way of knowing what we were going to encounter there. To be honest
I’m uncertain what we encountered. A more detailed look at our scans will Feb highly
informative.”

He nodded and turned his attention to Sienna.

"Commander Verin, I will need to speak with you shortly." T’Mur raised an intrigued eyebrow.

"You will direct the withdrawal from the ship and recall Gralen's shuttle,” said turning back to
