(Starbase Geneva, Park Deck - OO Crewman Montro - 09.00)

It had been a long shift and it had taken quite a while to clean the mess
in the waste recycling center, but it was finally done. Montro couldn't
imagine how the banana peel had gotten on the floor or how slippery it
turned out to be. Who knew? He fished inside of his large pouch making
sure that he had everything he needed. Gerty would be terribly upset if he
didn't. He tapped his left foot absent mindedly, while his tail wagged as
he waited for the turbolift to finally open up.

As the doors finally slid open, he bounded out quickly, shouting out
"Thanks" to the turbolift, after all turbolifts had feelings too, and began
searching for Gerty. He ran down the field and up the hill to get a better
vantage place. For a pony her size, it was amazing how easily she could
hide herself amongst the vegetation of the Park Deck.

He stood atop the hill looked over the pond trying to spot the grey pony or
any of his other pets. He scanned the area below, but his attention was
caught by the sound of two squeaking.

~Boris and Doris!~ Montro though, ~Finally. Now what are they saying?~

He turned just in time to see Gerty charging up at him and push him in to
the pond.

"OWWWWWW!!!!!!" he howled as he fell into the wet mass below.

As he fell he saw the pair of Macaws land upon Gerty's hat and say, "We
told him."

Soon there was a loud splash and Montro spluttered, as he began to tread water.

"Gerty!!!!! It's not my fault!" He yelled, as he made his way toward the
nearest edge. Montro pulled his slight, furry three foot frame out of the
pond and rested facing the holographic sky. He breathed heavily as he
tried to catch his breath. Moments later, he was joined by Gerty who began
to lick his face.

"Stop, Stop, Gerty!" he said playfully as he batted her away and tried to
sit up. Already he felt a tugging at his pouch which was slung around his
body. "Cut it out Iggy. They should be here."

Pushing the nosey squirrel out of the way, he opened the pouch and pulled
out a container of nuts, which he placed in front of Iggy. He then pulled
out another container, this time filled with seeds for Boris and Doris, who
quickly landed nearby to come for their feast. As he was feeding the
others, Gerty impatiently dug her nose through the pouch.

"Hey!!!" scolded Montro. "I'll get to you."

Taking out a couple large carrots, he had found he offered them to Gerty,
who quickly ignored him and continued to rummage through the bag looking
for her treat. Dropping the carrots to the ground, Montro wrestled to get
the pony to let go. "Okay, okay. Here." he said, producing the sought
after container. Slowly opening it, he offered it to Gerty, when he looked
down.

"Oh, I'm sorry." he said. "But it's your own fault. You shouldn't have
pushed me in. You can lick it if you want. It's still sugar!"

Gerty bowed her head, as though she was sulking and went over the fallen
carrots. Sugar water somehow just wasn't the same as sugar cubes. She
took the carrots in her mouth and slowly munched on them.

"Maybe later," said Montro as he got up and stroked her mane.

"You should wear a chronometer, Montro." said a crotchety voice.

Montro smiled. "I do, Mr. Dickens. You know that." he replied, as he saw
the old Terran walking over.

"Yeah, so why are you always late?" Dickens replied, as he reached the
strange menagerie.

"Time always seems to be running away from me." Montro answered with a
toothy grin.

"Yeah, like everyone else." said Dickens, under his breath.

(Corridor - OO Crewman Montro - 11:10)

After exercising with the brood, Montro was on his way to pay a visit to
his friend Quirk. If Trog was in a good mood, maybe he'd let them have
lunch without taking the paint brushes with them. But then Trog was never
in a good mood. Montro skipped along his way, having mostly tried
out. His fur was still quite matted down. As he moved along, he left a
very wet trail behind him.

As he moved in and out of the bunches of people, he heard the sound of crying.

~What's that?~ he wondered, as he homed in on the sound.

Soon he found a little girl crying on the floor.

"Oh, what's the matter, little girl? Are you lost?" asked Montro.

(Starbase Geneva, Conference Room - TAC/ASC Vladek Rofellian -
2405.08.27.15:25)

"It would be my pleasure; my shoulder is fine now. I will organise a bay to
be cleared right now if that is all Captain?" Wilson asked ready to get on
with Vladek's proposition concerning the transfer of his ship to the station.

(Reply Aragorn)

The Captain began then to talk with the Counsellor, Vladek was listening
distractedly, he was thinking at all the time he had spend to fix his ship
but all hies efforts were rewarded, The Remark was going to be part of the
station's fleet and Vladek was in a sort proud of it.

After the Captain had given instructions to all the others officers
concerning the repairs of the Nimitz, the welcome of her crew, the security
measures,... he ended the meeting. Each attended to the task he had been
assigned.

"Shall we then Mr Rofellian?" Wilson said gesturing to the door.

"Sure Mr Wilson, let's go." Vladek replied in following Wilson who began to
walk out of the room

(Starbase Geneva - Conference Room - Commander Actun - 15:40)

The meeting was over and as usual, everyone was talking to everyone about
things that they didn't want to say in front of everyone. The CSO
approached Actun.

"Hello Commander, when or how do you wish me to assist with your
investigation?"

"Ensign, my main interest is in the origin of the sphere if we can link it
back to the Romulans or someone that works for them. Of course any
information at all that you can process from it is valuable. I have several
task to perform right now but if you need any assistance in Science feel
free to ask."

(Reply Lee)

Actun nodded. "Don't forget that your investigation is forensic in nature.
Security would want to get any information you find as well in order to
catch the perpetrator. There are several parallel investigations going on."

(Reply Lee)

"Very well Ensign, keep me posted." Actun concluded and left for his
quarters. Finding a hole in the Captain's schedule would probably take some
time.

(Geneva - Conference Room - Lt(jg) Walker Isengard - 15.45)

  "Sir,"

Walker stopped, and turned to the very familiar voice. ~I don't need this.~

"I know we didn't get off on the right foot. I would like to apologize and
start over. I'm Francais De L'Arc du Pounte, Acting Chief Medical Officer."

Walker looked at the hand for a moment, and wondered at his honesty for a
moment. The Chief didn't dare take down his shields to sense the feelings
emanating from the Doctor, not with Arianna still in the room. He was torn
apart already, he didn't need her obvious feelings sending him further into
a spiral. Walker extended his own hand and grasped the doctors. "Walker,
Security Chief." Walker broke the shake, and stepped tot he side to let
another exiting officer past. "Do you care for a drink, doctor? After
everything, I feel I could use one."

He didn't add that the sooner he got away from the First Officer, the more
stable he would become.

"Do you care for a drink, doctor? After everything, I feel I could use
one." Walker offered.

"Yes sir, I would enjoy that sometime. I'll hold you to that offer."
Francais said energetically as he left the Conference Room.

(Starbase Geneva, Shuttle bay 1 - TAC/ASC Vladek Rofellian - 2405.08.27.15.55)

Wilson and Vladek walked along the shuttle bay heading towards the control
room;

While Wilson was giving orders to a crewman to clear the main area of the
Shuttle bay for the Remark, Vladek noticed that he was still holding the
PADD with all the informations regarding the ACMO. He was supposed to talk
to Isengard about it after the meeting but the Dr. was just talking to
Isengard. ~ And I think it isn't the appropriate moment, with all the
injured crew members of the Nimitz who will arrive soon, Du Pounte is the
only Doctor we have. but I'll keep an aye on him anyway.~

Then Wilson turned around to face Vladek.

"I am clearing a space on this deck if you have got no problem with that,
this deck is already Federation only and we can have security brought down
here if you want to be safer." he yelled over the noises.

" Kind attention Mr Wilson but there is no need for extra security
measures, my ship has her own defensive systems, I'll show you, you'll be
surprised." Vladek replied

Wilson pointed towards a door to the back of the hangar they began to move
off towards it.

(Starbase Geneva, Shuttle bay 1, Control Section - TAC/ASC Vladek Rofellian
- 2405.08.27.16:00)

As they entered the Control Section Wilson moved over to the computer panel
over looking the bay and sat down, he keyed in a command into the panel and
the doors began to open, he then pushed another button and spoke.

"All hands clear the Flight deck," he said over the comm. link. The Danube
shuttle began to take off and head out of the bay, it slid out of the doors
and out into space.

~ he is only here since a few days and he is already familiarized with all
the systems, I think I've came across an very efficient guy.~ Vladek's
thought were interrupted by Wilson who asked "Right Mr Rofellian, do you
want to go and get your ship then?".

"You can say so Mr Wilson, I can't wait any longer,I'm so excited, the
faster it will be, the better it will be." replied Vladek with an
enthusiastic tone.

"Good we will take a shuttle pod there is a couple moored in this section;"
Wilson motioned towards the door.

(Starbase Geneva, Shuttle Pod , on-route to USS Boudicca - TAC/ASC Vladek
Rofellian - 2405.08.27.16:05)

While Wilson was sitting in the pilot's seat, keying in commands, looking
forward out into space, he began to engage conversation with Vladek.

"So raised by security, that had to be tough," he said.

" Yes, with my parents dead, I had no family left on Romulus and the TAC/SC
of the ship didn't want to leave me in a orphanage, his wife and his son
had died in a shuttle crash few months ago, so naturally he adopted me. And
to thank him, I've decided to enter in Starfleet Security, it was the best
gift that I could do to him." Vladek replied

"Well, what do you know about this scout ship, I have never come up close
with one in real life." Wilson said.

" Well, the scout ship is the Romulan equivalent of an Federation
Danube-class Runabout but is more powerful. The engine his a quantum
singularity warp drive that allows to attain a maximum speed of warp 7.5
for 2 days, making it an ideal reconnaissance vessel due to its range, size
and speed. The scout ship is armed with 2 disruptor arrays, but this one
has been refitted to carry also a plasma torpedo launcher and of course a
Cloaking device." explained Vladek like he was repeating a lesson.

"Is it totally operational?" Wilson asked.
"Yes, except for the warp drive, for the moment it can only attain warp 4,
I've asked Ensign Edwards to take a look at it when we were on the Boudicca
but then we were send to find a crashed Runabout so we didn't get the time
to fix it" responded Vladek a little disappointed.

"Can I ask you for a favour then?" Wilson spoke again

~ he seemed so exciting as me ~ thought Vladek in replying " sure, what do
you want ?"

"Can my lads have a look at your shuttle and scan it do tests all of that
only if you approve, Feel free to say no but they would kill me if I did
not ask at least ask you," John said awaiting a response.

Vladek thought for a moment, he wasn't very incline to let strangers
looking at his ships but Wilson had been so kind to help him and Vladek
couldn't anyway repair the warp drive alone "Yes but I prefer to be with
you when you'll do it, there is some security systems inside it and you may
trigger them inadvertently"

" Oh and call me John, Wilson is so Erm... Impersonal," Wilson said

"All right John, at the only condition that you called me Vladek"

John turned the shuttle pod and they saw the USS Boudicca.

Vladek was touched in seeing her ~ so a fine ship and condemned to stay here ~

"Is the Ship in bay one or two, Vladek ?"John said.

" Bay two, John " Vladek replied

"Right Two it is," John spoke and keyed in the docking protocols the
shuttle pod slid into the ship gently and came to a stop.

(Starbase Geneva - Ready Room - Walker Isengard- 1602)

"Computer, name the command crew of that ship."

<<Captain Eva Straton, Commander Richard Ian Lee, Lieutenant Commander
Shondar Dorkin.>>

Walker frowned deeply, this was an interesting line of questions coming
from the suspect. Walker opened up his mind, and read the man before him.
He felt, disdain, exasperation. Nothing like guilt, but he did have a touch
of panic... thought that could have come from anything.

Walker had indeed studied the past history of Geneva, he did remember
reading about the Paladin, and the temporal anomaly it had popped out of.
He had glanced over it, but he did remember a 'Straton' and 'Lee' being
part of the command crew.

After a few seconds, when the computer was done, he felt pure anger out of
'Lee'. His phaser inched up on reflex, as the Commander proceeded to call
the CO an idiot, among other things. Walker opened his mind more, and
caught fragments of thoughts, pre-echoes of what the Commander was going to
say. There was no subterfuge about it, just a harsh speaking command
officer who seemed to have been snubbed, and what Walker considered a
healthy bit of rage and possibly being thrown in the brig and interrogated
when time was of the essence.

Walkers doubts mostly evaporated when Lee said "Contact the admiral, read
that PADD. In the mean time.." he turned to look at Walker. "Lead on, but
don't get any funny ideas."

Walker kept the phaser generally in his direction, and said. "Captain
Aragorn, he speaks the truth."

He took a breath, and considered. There was always a possibility..."At
least, he thinks he does." Walker smiled grimly to the commander, "Your
interrogation has already begun, commander."

(USS Boudicca, Shuttle Bay Two - TAC/ASC Vladek Rofellian - 2405.08.27.16:30)

They both stepped out into the Shuttle bay, while John was looking around
Vladek was already over at his ship.

John walked over to him."So that's the Lady I have herd so much about,"

"John, may a present you the Remark, isn't she beautiful ?" Vladek opened
up the vessel and they both stepped inside of it

"Did I fail to mention that my Romulan reading skills are lacking," John
said looking down at the panel.

"Don't worry about it, I'll show you what key to hit, it's approximately
the same configuration that we have on our shuttles and Runabouts, you'll
get use to it rapidly" Vladek replied with a little smile.

John sat in the pilot seat and Vladek explained him the working of the
control panel then he contacted OPS for the launching procedure. "Uss
Remark to OPS, require permission to launch and to dock in Shuttle bay 1"

The response came immediately "USS Remark you are free to launch and to
dock in Shuttle bay 1".

"Ok John let's go." and The Remark then cut through into space and towards
the Geneva.

John moved his hands over the controls gently maneuvering the vessel
through space carefully watched by Vladek.

"Easy John, the controls are more sensitive than in a Runabout." but
Vladek's worries were useless, Wilson was a good pilot and he gently landed
the ship on the shuttle bay.

(Starbase Geneva - CO's Ready Room - Commander Actun - 16:35)

Aragorn smiled.

"I am aware of certain difficulties, Commander. But, like you, I am sure
that we can work something out. I must admit that I like the idea. However,
you cannot serve two masters. SF Intelligence put you on this base for a
reason. And, seeing that I am not really if the Intelligence loop, I doubt
SFI would be very happy if I stepped in and took you over. So officially
you will still be an SFI-officer. However, if you have some time to spare,
and especially if both the interests of Starfleet and SFI overlap, I would
like to be able to call upon your services. So, officially you are not part
of the command structure of this vessel, like a lot of civilians on this
base. But that does not prevent us from working together."

"There have been many instances where non-Starfleet personnel have been
involved with Starfleet operations. And if they can't work together, I
can't see a reason why we couldn't. Working together, Commander, that is
how we are going to play it."

"That is, if you can live with it."

Actun rose from the chair and walked towards the window, looking out.
"Mr. Rofellian and Mr. Wilson is out there at USS Boudicca as we speak. Mr.
Rofellian offered me the information stored in his Romulan scout ship's
computer banks but for some reason I'm no longer in question to visit the
ship."

Actun turned towards the Captain.

"A small thing Captain, they will probably bring the Scout vessel over to
Geneva where I may access it more easily than on Boudicca but it
illustrates what can happen and will happen with officers from different
command chains. That is one thing."

"The other is that what I have seen of SFI activities have all been based
upon secrecy, lies, cover-ups and right-out treason. Many of the crew on
Geneva has served under me on Boudicca, they trust me and I trust them. My
loyalty is to them and that means to you Captain and the base as a whole.
Starfleet as such and the SFI has lower priority and if the Admiralty have
a problem with that they will have to transfer me to different position.
Meanwhile, I intend to do what I can to establish an open SFI presence
here, where my main task is to provide Starfleet with intelligence about
this sector, especially regarding the Xenolathes."

Actun sat down again.

"I will never lie to you Captain or withhold any information that I find
regarding this base. As long as I'm here, I will be working for you, under
your command or not. As an SFI agent I have both the ability and
authorization to perform tasks that no one else on this base have. Yes, I
think I can live with working together with you." Actun concluded with a
hint of irony that very well may have been unintentional.

(Reply Aragorn)

Actun stood. "Yes Captain, agreed. Thank you for your time, I know you have
a lot on your mind right now. I would need an office to work from, I take
it I can work out the details with the Geneva administration?"

"So John, what do you think of her ?" Vladek asked, impatient to have
John's impressions.

(Reply Wilson)

"Thanks, John " Vladek replied and he enchained "Sorry but I've to leave,
I've an inquiry in progress and a surveillance to organize."

(Reply Wilson)

They both stepped out of the ship and Vladek engaged the intrusion
defensive systems. "Concerning our little tests in the ship, we can arrange
that for tomorrow, if you want, my inquiry will probably take the rest of
the day ? " Vladek asked.

(Reply Wilson)

" Ok see you tomorrow and thanks for you help." and Vladek headed for the
exit ~ Damned I've just the time to get back to my quarters to get dressed.~

"So John, what do you think of her ?" Vladek asked,

John turned to face Vladek, John shook his head.

"Well, Vladek she is Erm BRILLIANT," John said putting allot of
significance on the last word.

"Thanks, John " Vladek replied and he enchained "Sorry but I've to leave,
I've an inquiry in progress and a surveillance to organize."

They both stepped out of the ship and Vladek engaged the intrusion
defensive systems. "Concerning our little tests in the ship, we can arrange
that for tomorrow, if you want, my inquiry will probably take the rest of
the day? " Vladek asked.

"No problem, I have to con my boys into getting their shuttles ready, Ill
speaks to you later Vladek and don't be a stranger you are welcome here all
the time. Were you not supposed to be organising a tour for the Capt and
Cmdr? Its all right I will delay them.

" Ok see you tomorrow and thanks for you help." Vladek said walking out
like he had something on his mind.

"Right Ladies, you lot can get out here now!" John said shouting at his
crewmen hiding behind a bunch of canisters.

"Sorry Boss," Parak replied.

"There she is, You may look but no touching or fiddling you know how
Romulan ships are it will be booby trapped up the ying yar," John said not
wanting his crew to blow up the station on his first day.

"Were you lot not suppose to be doing checks on your shuttles!" John said
rising his eye brows. "Well don't look at me GET ON WITH IT!" John ordered
them.

"Aye Boss," They replied scurrying of the flight deck only Parak remained.

"What is it Parak I know that look," John said?

"What looks John, Just because I spent a year with you on that deep space
voyage doesn't mean I know you," Parak replied grinning.

"Speak," John said.

"You told the Captain yet or any one," Parak asked.

"No I have not," John replied.
"Do you not think you should?" Parak asked.

"Listen the chances of them finding us are remote and that was taken fair
and square," John said.

" It could give us a edge though, if anything does happen, Just saying, you
have your something is going to happen face and I know you still have the
dreams John, I still do," Parak stated and then began to walk off John
yelled to his back.

"WHAT FACE," John yelled Parak just shrugged his shoulders.

~I hate it when that guy is right, well I will have to find the Captain, ~
John thought.

John tapped his badge, " Wilson to Captain Aragorn, could you please come
to shuttle bay one." John stated into the comm.

(Reply Aragorn)

"At you first convince if you do not mind Sir, it is important." John said.

(Reply Aragorn)

"Thank you sir, 17:30 would be fine, Wilson out." John finished the COM and
walked towards his office above the flight deck.

(Starbase Geneva, Shuttle Bay 1 / John's Office, Conn Ensign Wilson, 17:00)

John sat at his desk reading the Romulan Padd he held in his hand.

~We should not have done it we had no right~ John shook his head and began
to daydream the Padd fell on to John's lap.

NRPG: This will make sense later on hopefully lol

RPG:

"They are coming from all sides they can't beam us out, There are too many
of them." Parak said.
"Get ready are the women and children out?" John shouted.
" Yes but that is not going to do us much," Parak screamed at John fear
apparent in his voice.
"Damn they set us up, this place is crawling with them," John shouted and
hit his head against the barricade Disruptor fire flying over the top. And
smoke clouding the vision of the men.
"Parak get out of here," John shouted Parak then ran out towards the door,
John got ready to run but the ceiling in front of him collapsed. John sat
back and cradled his Rifle.
"Well I am not going out sitting down, The device is out now and He is
safe." John stood up and began to open fire at the droves of Jem' Hadar
coming into the complex they fired back and John flew back from a blast,
John lay back and looked up at the now open hole in the roof and looked up
at the stars above him Ready to die.

"Sir," The voice snapped John back to reality and he sat up in his chair.
"What time is it?" John asked.

"17:30 Sir, Captain Aragorn is here," The crewman stated John looked at him.

"Thank you," John said and then got up and picked up the Romulan Padd and
placed it in his draw. John then walked down on to the flight deck to meet
with the Captain.

(Starbase Geneva, Counsellor's office, ACOUNS Ensign Roft, 17.25)

Tap listened to Vicki's distorted description of her problem. When she was
halfway through, Tap realized that he didn't have a clue what she was
talking about.

~Tap, don't interrupt her. It'll only make her mad. That's to say that
anger isn't already one of this
apparent hurly-burly of emotions.~

Vicki went on: "...husband's due to arrive soon, and... and... I'm going to
be in sooo much trouble. He's going to be really angry, it's all my fault,
I..."

~If only she would sit down, she's making me nervous.~

"...FOR GOODNESS SAKE, she's ONLY EIGHT YEARS OLD!!!" Vicki said in a
volume which knocked Tap right out of his daydreaming/inattentive
state. Then, Vicki took a semi seated semi lying down position on the sofa.

~Finally. I really should remember to tell people to have a sit down
before doing anything else.~

"Alright." Tap said cautiously, "Let's take that from the top, shall
we? Um. Why is it such a big problem that your husband will be arriving
soon? Won't he be able to help you in your situation?"

Tap had to think hard to remember other things that wasn't clear to
him. He knew he didn't know what she was talking about, but he felt he had
to prioritize rather than asking Vicky to explain everything one more time.

"Oh, by the way, my name is Tap Roft, the new counsellor. But, you
probably knew that. That's why you came to me. Uh, what's your
name? Also, who's this 'they' you left your daughter with? Is your
daughter a dealer or a user or both?"

Tap tried his best to ask the questions with as much sympathy as
possible. It was the first time he heard of eight year olds in drug rings.

"Forgive my nosiness, I just want a little more info to work from."

Tap looked at the 'patient' and realized she was in quite an emotional
mess. He reached to a bag he brought to the office and pulled out an
horrendous looking soft toy resembling some alien creature. He offered it
to Vicky, "Would you like Drachon for some comfort. It's a little
something I brought along to decorate the office. He's great. You can
punch him or kick him or throw him around. Or, you could just hold him.
Whatever you prefer."

<<reply Vicky Sevant>>

Tap thought to himself, ~Ah, great. You have just done the most corny
thing in the history of counselling. What's next? The guilt chair? The
'don't step on me' zone? The hat of truth?~

"Okay, so tell me all about your situation."

"Thank you for coming Captain," John said bolting upright.

(Reply Aragorn)

"Well sir, do you want to come up to my Office it is a bit quieter than
this deck." John shouted over the Noise of the flight deck.

John gestured over to the desk for the Captain to have a seat, Aragorn took
a seat at the desk. John sat at the other side.

"Captain, starbase Geneva has 2 Danube Class Runabouts, 6 Type 7
Shuttlecraft, 4 Travel Pods and also a Romulan Shuttle craft and the USS
Phantom. Therefore sir may I make a request." John asked.

(Reply Aragorn)

John reached for a Padd from his bottom draw; John then passed it over to
the Captain.

"It is my official request for the transfer from the USS Boudicca, 1 Danube
class shuttle and 2 Type 7 Shuttlecraft. The shuttles are in desperate need
sir." John stated not sure if he had over stepped his mark.

(Reply Aragorn)

"Thank you sir, Also if you do not mind may I run combat drills for the
Flight team externally of the Station to practise externally in real life
conditions the Holodeck is good however they do not get the same effect
they would from flight and launch procedure in a emergency just to be safe

would not be annoyed by John's request.

(Starbase Geneva, Guest Quarters, SPC Louise Palmer and CO, Captain
Aragorn, 17:58)

"Hi, stranger,"she called as she straightened up. "You call this a decent
time, then?" she added, laughing.

"Sorry, busy day at the office," he replied.

Louise set the apple pie to cool and, stripping off her apron, went to
greet him.

She gave him a kiss, full on the lips.

"So how was your first day, then?"

Holding her for a few seconds, Aragorn nodded at the little table.

"Your first day seems to have been alright," he replied, "You obviously
heard about my re-installment then. And that's a new outfit too, if I am
not mistaken. You know, they really don't pay me that much."

Louise smiled. The sculpture didn't cost anything, well, only a few
holodeck hours. And the dress was really cheap, considering."

"Considering?" Aragorn said with a little frown.

"Considering how hard it is to find something really nice and in my size.
Besides, I wanted something special to welcome you home with in your first
day."

"You're sweet," Aragorn replied, "Costly but sweet." He pulled her closer
again and buried his face in her hair.

Then he stepped back.

"Oh, before I forget, apparently the CO's quarters are going to be cleared
tonight. They had to do an investigation there and now that's complete, we
will have to move again tomorrow. Oh, and I have a meeting at 7 with the
Admiral. Apparently she wasn't too happy with me doing my duty."

Louise pulled a face.

"I was hoping that we could have this first evening to ourselves. Meh'Nor
is spending the night with a friend and once Jenny is asleep...."

"And stays asleep," Aragorn interjected with a smile.

"... and stays asleep," agreed Louise. "Then we could have spent some time
together, just us."

"Sounds like a plan, kiddo," Aragorn replied. "But don't worry, I doubt
that the meeting will take much time. A quick in, blasting the Admiral and
then quickly out again, before she realises what happened."

Aragorn broke in a big grin.

"And then ...."

Louise pulled back smiling. "Good, so while I set the table you can tell me
all about your day."

Aragorn pulled a face.

"Nothing much happened, really. Just a standard day. I get installed as CO,
I play Counselor to my FO, nice girl though. I think you'll like her. Had a
bit of a rotten time. Seems that she was slapped in public by her
boyfriend, the then CO. Which is why I got the job, I think. After that, I
did some research, had a meeting with the new staff, got a peck from Lise,
my new FO and had a bit of a row with a newly arrived officer. That's
basically it."

"Oh, that reminds me!" Louise shouted out. "People on the station are
gossiping about that."

"They are? What are they saying then?"

"Let's just say that they were less than complimentary about the sexual
morals of your new FO." Louise replied, which made Aragorn growl.

"I thought you ought to know because we both know how gossip, even
unfounded, or perhaps, ESPECIALLY unfounded, can spread and cause damage."
Louise finished.

Aragorn sighed. "I know," he said, "I know. I'll have a word with her about
it tomorrow. Poor kid."

"OH! And they also know about you kissing the admiral!" Louise grinned.

"They do? My, my, words spread fast around here. I wonder who leaked it."

Then a boyish grin broke through. "And what were they saying about that?"
he asked.

"Oh, nothing much, just that you did it." Louise smiled again. "Perhaps the
Admiral enjoyed it?"

Aragorn cast his mind back. "Well," he said slowly, " I think at first she
was a bit upset but laughed about it later. Naaaah, I don't think she would
be the one to tell. Besides, she is getting on a bit. And still single,
from what I could gather. So people are bound to talk about that."

"Just don't go kissing too many of the female staff on this station,"
Louise teased. "I don't want to overhear that I am married to the Casanova
of Freedom Squadron."

"Like I would," Aragorn muttered.

(Starbase Geneva - Admiral's Module - CO - Captain Aragorn - 19.02)

  After Lise ha entered, Aragorn realised that something was amiss. The
serene surroundings suddenly seemed filled with bad vibes.

The way that his FO said: "Admiral, has your lighting generator gone
offline? I could see to its
repair." made Aragorn's hair in his neck stand on edge.

~What's going on here?~ he thought. ~They didn't behave this way this morning?~

Eyeing the Admiral wearily, he noticed how disgusted the Admiral looked
towards Lise. Just as Aragorn was about to step in and find out what was
going on, he heard a familiar voice behind him.

"I'm sorry to interrupt-" he heard Louise say then fall silent. Aragorn
turned round and was flabbergasted by the look on her face. He had never
seen so much anger in that, normally lovely, face. He saw her look at the
Admiral, then turn towards him and Lise.

The hatred in her eyes stunned Aragorn, his mind unable to cope with that
unsuspected emotion in his wife's eyes. And what made it even worse, was
that the anger and hatred seemed to be directed at him!

Aragorn, unable to control his stupefaction, saw how Louise said something,
rather than hear the words she said.

He heard the words, but his mind was too busy working out what had
happened. He saw how Louise turned and left but instead of 'seeing' her
leave, he still saw the look of anger and hatred that Louise had given him.
HIM!

His heart told him to go and run after her. To find out what had happened,
to make sense of this crazy situation. But his mind, still occupied by the
look Louise had given Aragorn, simply refused to follow any orders. He
stood there, like a stone sculpture, a look of complete shock on his face.

"LOUISE" his mouth formed the word but his vocal cords did not join in. His
mind refused to let in anything that could distract from the mental
processes going on in his head, all directed towards finding an answer, THE
answer. ~What happened?~

But unable to come up with anything, Aragorn remained standing there, the
expression on his face changing from confusion to shock to utter bewilderment.

Only when he was knocked over by somebody, did, at least part of, his
senses return. Suddenly overcome with rage, he jumped up and turned around.
"STOP IT!" he bellowed as he saw his FO get up and lunge at the Admiral.

But she didn't and Aragorn took two steps closer and grabbed the back of
the FO's uniform, pulled her off and flung her to the other side of the room.

Then the Admiral got up, ready to lunge at Lise, but as she ran past
Aragorn, he grabbed her as well. Unfortunately the fabric of her garment
was less strong that that of a Starfleet uniform and it ripped with a
sickening sound, falling apart completely. Still that didn't seem to stop
the Admiral, and quickly grabbing the Admiral's hair, he pulled at it with
all his might.

That DID stop the Admiral and gave Aragorn time to grab an arm and sling
her on her couch.

"STOP IT! D**N YOU!" Aragorn bellowed again, breathing heavily.

"HOW DARE YOU! DON'T YOU REALISE THAT AT THIS VERY MOMENT MY SON COULD BE
DYING?!"

Suddenly Aragorn's face ashened. He had heard the words he spoke and was
able to comprehend them, where as before his mind had just stored the words
that Louise had spoken. Suddenly Aragorn was overcome with extreme sickness
as his fear for his son erupted.

"I...I... I have to go!"

Aragorn slapped his commbadge.

"MISTER ROFT! GET YOUR BUTT OVER TO THE ADMIRAL'S MODULE! .... NOW!"

With a look of sincere disgust for the women, Aragorn turned round and ran.

(Starbase Geneva - Sickbay - SPC Louise Palmer - 1913)

Louise stopped running as she got to the entrance to Sickbay, and brushed
the tears from her face. She glanced around quickly, hoping to see Aragorn
following her, but there was no sign of him. No one was in sight at all.

~Nice of him to show such concern!~ she thought, angrily as she turned back
to the doorway. Entering quickly, she grabbed the nearest person she saw.

"Where's my son? Where's Meh'Nor?"

She saw the look of incomprehension on the nurse's face and shook her arm
impatiently.

"The little boy who was brought here! He had an accident - hit his head!"

At once the nurse nodded. "He's over here, in Emergency Trauma," she said.
"The doctor's with him now."

She took Louise over to the emergency room and said, "Dr Thorne? This is
the little boy's mother."

Louise, already sick with worry for Meh'Nor, was even more scared by the
words Emergency Trauma, and had to swallow twice before she could stammer,
"H-how is he? I - I came as quickly as I could."

Dr Thorne looked gravely at her.

"He has a greenstick fracture on his right arm, which is no problem, that's
a simple matter of fusing the bone again, which only takes a short time.
However, he also suffered a fractured skull, and although we have fixed
that, there was already a large amount of blood inside his skull. We
managed to drain part of it, but not all. Unfortunately we cannot assess
what damage may or may not have been done to his brain already. Only time
will show that, I'm afraid. Once he wakes up we'll have a better idea."

Louise went even paler than she had been already.

"He - he will be alright?" she asked in a low tone.

The doctor's face took on a sympathetic expression. "I'm sorry," she said
gently. "We really can't tell yet."

"C-can I see him?"

Dr Thorne nodded. "But not for long. We want to get that arm fixed while
he's still out. And then, well, there's nothing much you can do but wait."

Louise stepped quietly over to her son's bed, and stood quietly beside him.

"It's alright, sweetheart, Mummy's here," she whispered, swallowing hard to
prevent the tears she could feel about to spill over from doing so.

She sat down on a chair beside the bed, looking at his face, which seemed
almost deathly still, and took hold of the hand of his uninjured arm.

Dr Thorne looked at Louise for a moment, then said, "You can stay whilst I
fuse the bone, if you like."

Louise nodded, unable to speak, and quietly the doctor began her task of
fusing the bone in Meh'nor's other arm, and when she had finished, she said
quietly, "You can stay for a while. Does his father know?"

"Oh yes," Louise said bitterly. "He knows, I told him myself. He just
hasn't found the time to tear himself away yet."

The doctor just nodded and left.

(Starbase Geneva - Sickbay - SPC Louise Palmer and CO Captain Aragorn - 1925)

Louise sat immobile, holding Meh'Nor's hand, her brain wheeling with a
kaleidoscope of thoughts. Fear for Meh'Nor was uppermost, but underneath
ran a searing red-hot rage that Aragorn - ARAGORN! - would prefer to stay
with those floozies than come to be with his son.

~He's obviously so taken with them that nothing, not even Meh'Nor, can drag
him away~

It was bad enough that he had apparently decided to deceive her, but to
behave so callously to his son.....that above all she could neither
understand nor forgive.

~And he always made such big thing out of his Vegan upbringing, how deceit
was abhorrent to him!~ she thought angrily. ~I would never have thought
this of him, NEVER!~

She decided then and there that he would never take her in like that again.

Just then, she heard someone hiss in the other room, "Get out of my way!"
followed by a lot of "hush!"s and inaudible words.

Then Aragorn burst in, but stopped as he saw his son.

"Meh'Nor," he said almost soundlessly, too scared to step closer. Too
scared to find out the truth. That his son was dead? The way he lay there,
his face ashened. His chest seemingly not rising.

"Meh'Nor," he said again.

"How nice of you to spare the time to see your son," Louise said
sarcastically in a low tone. "I hope he didn't ruin your plans too much!"

Aragorn, not understanding what she said, turned towards her.

"F*** off, Louise. I don't know what I did that upset you so. But PLEASE
knock it off! How is he? Is he.....?"

He couldn't bring himself to say the word.

"Dead?" Louise finished for him. "No, he's not dead. Not yet," she added,
unable to stop herself from saying what she knew would hurt. "Not that you
seem to have cared whether or not he was till now. Spare me the fake
concern, if you really cared abut him you would have come with me there and
then, instead of waiting so long with *them*."

She let go of Meh'Nor's hand almost reluctantly, and stood up. "Come
outside," she said. "I don't want to say what I have to say in front of
Meh'Nor!"

Aragorn regarded her as if he saw her for the first time. And indeed, it
was for the first time because this Louise was a complete stranger to him
and not the woman that he loved and cared for. He closed his eyes and
sighed. He walked over to the bed and brushed his hand against the
youngster's cheek.

"Hang in there, son, hang in there."

Closing his eyes again, Aragorn tried to suppress all emotions. He felt
sick, weak and powerless.

"Hang in there." The words a mere whisper. Then he turned and walked out.

With a last look towards her son, Louise followed him out of the room,
closing the door behind her.

"How dare you!" she said angrily, careless of the curious glances coming
their way. "How dare you behave like that!"

"Behave like what? A concerned father?"

Aragorn shot her a glance. "Just tell me one thing, Louise. Why? What did I
do to deserve this? Am I to blame for Meh'Nor's accident?"

Louise stared at him. He really seemed to have no idea what was so wrong.
That only fuelled her anger.

"What did you do?" she repeated. "What did you DO?" Her voice rose as all
the pent-up emotions of the last hour spilled over.

"I catch you with that - that slut of a woman who calls herself your FO,
and - AND the Admiral wearing NOTHING but the flimsiest of transparent
clothing, in a darkened room, with drinks and - and candles and all this is
supposed to be a regular work meeting? - and I'm expected to believe
there's NOTHING WRONG??? Then instead of showing one iota of concern about
your son, you instead finish up whatever - whatever I interrupted, before
deigning to come and see how he is, THEN you pretend to be all concerned
and fatherly? Cut the cr*p, Aragorn!"

An overwhelming urge came over Aragorn to hit her, to hurt her like she
hurt him. His mind went back to the meeting as he tried to link what she
said to what really happened. Then a passing thought stuck into his mind.
She wouldn't think - she couldn't think - there was no reason to think...

With a whitened face, he looked at his wife and remembered the look that
she had given him in the Admiral's module. She DID think...

Aragorn had no idea what had driven his wife to think that he was having an
affaire. And apparently an affaire with his superior and with his FO at the
same time?

~Surely~ he thought to himself, ~Surely she can see the illogic of it. As
if I would ever - ~

But the more he thought about it, the more confused he became. The more
difficult it became for him to find another reason.

"You don't trust me," he said, shocked. "You think I've had an affaire
behind your back." The truth of his assessment hit him like a ton of
bricks. "You don't trust me," he repeated, more shocked about this
revelation than the last time. "You don't trust me."

And he found that THAT cut more into his soul than anything else. Him, a
Vegan, a race known for their honesty and trustworthiness. She didn't trust
him, and had perhaps never trusted him fully. The mental shock he received
was almost too much to bear. He wanted to flee, run away from the eyes
filled with anger and distrust, hide in a little corner so that she
couldn't look at him, accusing him like that. He stared at his wife.

"Inform me of any progress of my son." Having said that, he turned round
and walked out of Sickbay, desperately in need of a hideout.

Louise watched him go in silence. She had seen the shock in his face as he
had repeated the words, "You don't trust me." She knew that lack of trust
to a Vegan was the worst insult you could give them. Could he be such a
good actor? To fake such shock? But then the evidence: the Admiral, the FO,
the negligee, the kiss - the kisses, she reminded herself - and the
lipstick. It all added up and was compounded by his tardiness in coming to
Sickbay. Closing her eyes, she shook her head sadly. Then she pushed aside
the almost overwhelming grief, the pain, the emptiness she felt inside at
the destruction of their love, and forced herself to think only of Meh'Nor.

Quietly, head held high, she returned to her son's bedside.

(Starbase Geneva - Park - CO - Captain Aragorn - 2100)

Aragorn sat under the tree and listened to the twitching of the birds
occupying it. ~How free of care they must be~ he thought. ~How utter
blissful they must be in their unawareness of human emotions~

It had taken him some time, to find a quiet spot where he could sit in
quiet, desperate to find the answers to the hurt inside him.

~How can she?~ he repeated over and over again. ~What did I do that could
warrant such a vicious attack?~

How could she even THINK such a thing of him? What possible evidence could
she have? His mind went back to the meeting, where everything seemed to
have started, but that confused him even more. What could have made the
Admiral and Lise go at each other's throat with such venom?

He thought back on everything that had happened that day and suddenly he
realised what HAD been going on. Lise's reaction to the book, the Admiral
waiting for him wearing practically next to nothing, the fight between them.

"Aragorn," he spoke out loud, "You are a bl***y fool!"

Almost everything made sense now. Lise and the Admiral had been madly in
love with him. And by taking Lise to see the Admiral, when the Admiral
obviously wanted to seduce him, he himself set off the fight for Aragorn.
He still had no idea what had changed the perception of the Admiral, or
indeed Lise. But somehow, that didn't matter any more. The answer was an
answer to an irrelevant question. The only question in his mind really was
~How could she?~

Sighing again, he tried to go over every little bit of information that
might have borne relevance to the case.

Suddenly Aragorn looked up, his peace disturbed when he heard somebody
shout, "Gertie! Gertie! Where are you? I've got some new sugar cubes for you!"

 From behind a small group of trees, he saw a three-feet high crewman
appear. The crewman, who wore a Starfleet uniform of sorts, walked over to
Aragorn.

"Hello," he said. "Want a sugar cube?"

Mission: Inalienable Rights, Day Ten
Stardate: 2405.08.28
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Starbase Geneva, Nicklaus' Quarters - OO Crewman Chrystine Nicklaus - 07.00)
"Oh, I don't want to get out of bed." moaned Chrystine, as she stretched
out on her bed.
The day before had been well spent, as she had had the day off.  But now
she had to go back to work.  She stared up at the ceiling as though
beseeching some galactic power that would let time stretch and let her stay
in bed forever.  Finally giving up, she dragged herself out of bed and
hopped into the shower.  Moments later, she appeared feeling much better
and singing a happy tune.
"Always look on the bright side of ......" she sang as she slid on her
uniform and began doing her hair, placing a couple pins in place.
She hummed as she went into the living room.  "Breakfast>" she said to the
replicator, which promptly produced a glass of orange juice and a slice of
toast.  Grabbing both, she downed the orange juice with one gulp and headed
out of the door with toast in hand.
(Command Deck, Yeoman's Station - OO Crewman Chrystine Nicklaus - 07.30)
Chrystine sat down at her desk and quickly began looking things over for
the day before the commander came in.  However the first thing that caught
her eye was that there was a transfer of command order to a Captain Aragorn.
~Huh? What happened?~ she wondered, as she began pouring through things and
tried to figure out what had transpired when she had had her brief holiday
on the holodeck yesterday.  ~Serves me right for not checking last
night.  So just who is this Aragorn?~
Chrystine sighed.  ~Another one.  Maybe it's something in the air.~ she
wondered, as she began to read what she could about Aragorn.  ~Well, the
job's gotta be done.  No matter who's there.  I'd better talk to Lise about
this.~
Putting aside the conflicted feelings, she got as much information as she
could, putting together a new log for this new commanding officer.  When
she felt ready, she got up and headed for his ready room.
(Captain's Ready Room - OO Crewman Chrystine Nicklaus - 08.00)
Pressing the enunciator button, Chrystine waited patiently for the door to
open.
"Good morning, Captain." she said, as the door opened.
~Not bad.~ she thought, as she took the look of the man in.  ~Too bad, he's
not younger.~
"My name is Chrystine Nicklaus and I am the CO's yeoman, which I understand
is you." she said, as she presented her shiniest smile and the day's
schedule to Aragorn.
"Is there anything I can do for you?" she asked.
