Stardate: 2408.01.06

(Romulus - Senate Building, Private Office - Senator Terrh - 1054)

The Uhlan had scurried the stone floors as he moved to deliver his news. He
had heard it from another advisor on the way to speak with the
Vice-Proconsul. Certain that his own master had not yet heard, he would
bring the news personally, and without delay.

As he entered the private offices, the robes character quickly closed the
door behind him and turned his back on it. "They're here, Senator." He
immediately lowered his hood and smiled apologetically for not requesting
permission to enter before he had let himself inside.

Terrh had been writing some notes, preparing for the beginning of the talks.
"About time, what's happening?" He looked up briefly, setting his stylus to
one side. Immediately he frowned and added, "Must you rush about in that
hooded cloak. You'll draw attention to yourself!"

The Uhlan bowed his head slightly, then took a step toward the desk.
"Praetor has been informing the rest of the committee."

"I take it that my lack of notification means he didn't feel it
necessary..." He shook his head and got up from his seat. "...either that
or he is hoping that I won't attend." Terrh laughed, knowing that Praetor
would clearly prefer it if he was out of the picture. It was only due to
his significant support in the Senate that he couldn't be removed without
considerable consequences.

The aide remained silent, but stood beside the door and waited for an
instruction.

As he moved to take his robe from its position to the side of his desk,
Terrh put on the garment and examined himself in the reflective surface of
the window. "Well, no such luck." Spinning on his heel, he began to make
his way toward the door. "Am I to assume the rest of the committee will be
there?"

"It is my understanding that Praetor is speaking privately with the
Federation Ambassador." The aide moved to open the door, "Her delegation
are waiting for her in Conference Chamber four." Immediately, the aide
stepped through the door and into the corridor.

Terrh followed with little hesitation. "Then it is time I met with them,
lead on Uhlan."

(Romulus - Senate Building, Conference Chamber Four - Senator Terrh - 1105)

With a wave of his hands, the Centurion at the door had lowered his weapon
and unsealed the door. Together with his partner, the two centurions had
stepped aside and as the doors unlocked with a clunk and began to open,
Senator Terrh made his entrance as regal as he was able.

As he entered the large round chamber, he saw immediately that there were
quite a few people in the federation delegation. He saw two women seated at
the table, and a number of Starfleet officers also present. There were two
others, apparently security of some description, who simply loomed nearby.

As Terrh approached the table he said, "Welcome my Federation friends," he
held out his open arms. "I hope you haven't been kept waiting too long?"

(reply: Trinin, Nayati, Jackson, any)

As he looked around the room, it appeared that he was the first to arrive.
Aside from the centurion honour guard, there were no other Romulans here.
Not one to ever let that bother him he asked, "Is everyone alright for
refreshment? I can arrange for some adequate liquids to drink, if you
require?"

(Romulus - Praetor's Office - Praetor Vrih - 1055)

"Our two empires have been stuck in a grey space for far too long Praetor,"
Frazier stated. "Even before our recent...internal troubles, we were little
more than neighbors that had nothing to do with each other."

Vrih chuckled, "I'm not certain I would classify our relationship as having
nothing to do with each other. I don't even think indifferent would be an
adequate description. I believe it would be more accurate to say that we
were at crossed purposes, and managed to stay out of each other's way... if
possible."

Frazier brushed at her hair with her hands before continuing. ~A sign of
her nerves?~

"We both possess resources that could gratefully benefit the other, and by
that I don't just mean material resources; scientific minds and philosophy
alike. This will open up so many doorways."

This time Vrih's smile was more in agreement, "Indeed. I can see how such
an exchange would interest your Federation."

Vrih watched as Frazier primped herself to an intriguing sitting position.
Then she said, "I can only see good things to come from a treaty of peace
between our two empires, and I am confident that by the end of our
negotiations we will both benefit from the significant changes." After a
short pause she decided to do some enquiring of her own, "What is your
reason for this course of action? I hope you don't mind me saying so, but
my sources say the Empire has never before been the first to ever instigate
a treaty, never mind with the Federation. Why the change of heart?"

Vrih sat back in his seat and took a deep breath. He couldn't help but find
himself liking this Breanna Frazier. She did like to get the point. And
she made effort to speak without passing judgment. Some of his own
ambassadorial staff could learn something from this one. Still, he couldn't
help but have that nagging distrust at the back of his mind. There were
just too many years of ... issues, between their two peoples. But they were
on the right track now. He was certain of it.

"Indeed, it would seem as though this is long over due," the Praetor
admitted. "It is my opinion the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire are
much like, as your people might put it, the two big kids on the block. The
eventuality that we would have to finally come face to face was apparent.
There were two ways that this could happen. Like the two big kids, we could
come together in a battle. However, the second option was that they could
form a union. A union in which they became stronger, with a bond of trust
to... how do you say it... watch each other's back."

The Praetor stood up and began to walk, slowly, looking, from time to time
at Frazier as he spoke. "I am certain that your people are aware of our
own," he sighed, "internal struggles, just as we have been aware of your
own. My people are at a clear crossroad. The Federation is, again, an
Earth phrase, ripe for the picking. However, I am just as certain that we
are not the only Empire come to this realization."

He paused and stopped behind his original seat. Leaning over, he put his
hands on the back of the chair. "I am going to be completely honest with
you Ms. Frazier. If the RSE were to take the Federation at this time I do
not believe that we have the resources to hold against those others. I
would hope that your Federation was not foolish enough to believe their
accord with the Klingons is not iron clad. I do have evidence to show that
they, also, have had similar conversations as we have had in our senate.
However, together, in a joint effort, we would be able to maintain your own
Federation, and protect Romulan interests as well."

(Romulus - Senate Building, Senatorial Receiving - CCOUNS Ensign Jon Nayati
- 1056.5)

Even though Jon had expected this, the time between Brianna Frazier's exodus
and her return seemed to drag endlessly. Jon kept himself centered and
waited. There was little else to do for now.

He ruminated instead on what he had noticed. Raizel Grem appeared to be
pleased when Frazier was escorted from the room into the Praetor presence
alone. ~Why would she be so pleased if she was to help with the
negotiations? Why doesn't she seem to be concerned for Ambassador Frazier?
Again, her mood seems out of sync with the gravity of the situation. Am I
imagining this or am I simply the only one who notices this about her?~

Jon was also concerned about Brianna Frazier. ~As long as my danger sense is
not active, there is not much we can do, Great Spirit. I haven't received
any telepathic distress messages from Ambassador Frazier. From his aura
neither has Baylon Trinin. This is probably a good sign.~
However looking at Tom Jackson, he could see it was otherwise with him.
Tom's aura showed signs of agitation and anxiety. He'd been pacing for a
while now.

Jon was about to say something when Ambassadorial Aide Paris Kolar spoke up
first and asked Jackson if it was necessary for him to be pacing. His aura
flashing with colors of nervous annoyance and anger, Tom gave Kolar a look
that might be considered deadly and took a seat near Baylon Trinin. If Envoy
Kolar took offense at Lt. Jackson's actions, her aura did not show it.
While Paris Kolar and Raizel Grem were talking, so were Baylon Trinin and
Tom Jackson.
Baylon Trinin and Tom Jackson were discussing the current situation.

"I must confess I am a bit concerned about this situation," said the nervous
OPS officer.

"There is nothing amiss about this situation," replied Lt. Trinin. "To
undertake diplomatic discussions, you must make concessions and have some
faith and trust in those you are negotiating with. All that is happening now
is that The Romulans are regarding the Delegation without Frazier's presence
seeking a weak link or a uncomfortable member of the team. It is a common
tactic even in security, take a team leader away from their team under a
stressful situation and see how the individual members of the team react.
Everything is a calculated move Mister Jackson, from the selection of the
room, the placing of the centurions to the absence of
Ambassador Frazier. It is a means to judge our resolve and to see if we are
hiding something."

~Perhaps Baylon Trinin missed his calling. He could almost be a counselor or
diplomat himself. It must be his Betazoid training.~

"That said, I would appreciate it if you took a deep breath and relaxed. The
Ambassador is well. I find it very unlikely that the head of the Romulan
Star Empire asked us to come all this way to destroy her or us after we
arrived, when he could have ordered it at any time once we entered the
neutral zone. If there is danger here it is from the Praetor's opponents not
his allies. And I am very certain that we are amongst his allies at present.
So sit, watch and observe, perhaps you will see something that is vital to
us later," Baylon concluded.

Jon said, "Excellent advice Lt Trinin. I couldn't have said it better
myself." Baylon Trinin's last words to Jackson gave Jon an epiphany of his
own. Maybe there was something he could ask and observe a little himself.

Tom Jackson appeared to take Baylon Trinin's advice to heart and calmed
down.

(Romulus - Senate Building, Praetor's Office - Ambassador Brianna Frazier -
1057)

As Bree listened to the Praetor, she continued to smile throughout. She was
determined to keep a pleasant front on, no matter what, but he was making it
increasingly difficult to do that. Still, she was very well practised at
hiding her emotions and thoughts, so she managed easily enough.

It was now clear to Bree, for the first time, why the Romulan Star Empire
was seeking a treaty with the Federation. She had been a little naive not
to have seen it before, but now it had been said out loud, she was not
entirely surprised. Sure, he had dressed it up and tried to indicate that
the Federation needed such a peace treaty for its own safety, and despite an
enormous amount of instinct to shout down the comments and defend her
beloved Federation, he training won out and she kept her comments to
herself.

After a short stint of pacing, the Praetor returned to his seat and stood
behind it. "I am going to be completely honest with you Ms. Frazier. If
the RSE were to take the Federation at this time I do not believe that we
have the resources to hold against those others. I would hope that your
Federation was not foolish enough to believe their accord with the Klingons
is not iron clad. I do have evidence to show that they, also, have had
similar conversations as we have had in our senate. However, together, in a
joint effort, we would be able to maintain your own Federation, and protect
Romulan interests as well."

A number of things immediately ran through her mind, and she wasn't sure
which of them she should listen to and which of them she should suppress.
~He's very sure of his military~ was her first thought, not altogether
certain if he had reason to be or not. She was no military strategist, and
she had no idea what state the fleet was in right now. ~He's just trying to
undermine our current treaty with the Klingons~ was her second thought,
concerned that the Praetor was trying to play mind games with her.

"I cannot deny..." she started, not allowing herself to appear phased one
bit, "...that the military benefits are a very real factor. But surely that
is not the only thing that interests you?" She asked, hoping to find a
glimmer of light in his response. Surely they were interested in more than
just military might?

(reply: Vrih)

After a few more moments of polite discussion, Bree stood up from her seat.
"Well, I hope you don't think me rude Praetor, but if we continue then we
run the risk of hammering out a treaty right here between the two of us."
She offered a friendly grin. "Let us return and begin negotiations
officially."

(Romulus - Senate Building, Conference Chamber Four - Ambassadorial Aid
Raizel Grem - 1106)

Raizel looked around the room with great curiosity. Originally, she had not
thought of Romulans as very artistic group, by their nature, however, she
now knew that it was not true. In fact, they were a very artistic people.
It was just hidden very well to outsiders. She noted that this room was
adorned with paintings and statues that obviously had a Romulan influence.

She looked around at the others. There was an underlying sense of tension,
but everyone managed to look fairly relaxed. All except Tom Jackson, who
seemed to be more tense than the others. She wondered if he had cause to be
so anxious. After her brief conversation with Paris, Raizel was beginning
to wonder if nerves were not affecting the Envoy as well. After all, the
much taller woman was not so experienced with Romulans. It had given her an
evil happiness to see her reaction at not having the records that she had
taken time to get to her. However, Nelvan III was old news to Raizel.

Shortly after that the door to the antechamber opened and in walked an
important looking Romulan, at by his clothing, who carried with him an air
of superiority and annoyance.

"Welcome my Federation friends," he held out his open arms. "I hope you
haven't been kept waiting too long?"

Raizel looked at the others then stood up, "Thank you. No, we have not been
waiting long at all."

"Is everyone alright for refreshment?" the Romulan asked, "I can arrange for
some adequate liquids to drink, if you require?"

Raizel knew that this Romulan was, most likely, a Senate member, at worst, a
rival to the Praetor. However, that fact that he did not introduce himself
indicated some form of duplicity on his part. She decided to play along
with the charade.

"I believe that we are fine for the moment, sir," she said plainly,
"however, if you could arrange for refreshments to be available to us during
the negotiations we would be most appreciative. Will you be our attendant
for this meeting?"

There was movement and noise at the door. Jon turned and saw a robed person
who entered. Looking at him, Jon noted that his aura was one of annoyance
and disdain. Despite that he said, ""Welcome my Federation friends." He held
his arms out wide as if to embrace them all. "I hope you haven't been kept
waiting too long?"

Raizel looked at the others then stood up, "Thank you. No, we have not been
waiting long at all."
Jon pasted a smile on his face while looking at the scene with Raizel Grem
and this robed Romulan. He urgently sent to Baylon Trinin, ::Do not trust
his friendly words. His aura is saying something else. He is very unhappy
that we are here.::

(Reply Baylon Trinin)

"Is everyone alright for refreshment?" asked the Romulan, as if concerned.
"I can arrange for some adequate liquids to drink, if you require?"

"I believe that we are fine for the moment, sir," said Raizel Grem plainly.
"However, if you could arrange for refreshments to be available to us during
the negotiations we would be most appreciative. Will you be our attendant
for this meeting?"

(Reply Terrh)

"Thank you for your concern Sir. I am Chief Counselor Nayati from the Hades.
Who might you be Sir?" asked Jon. "I mean no insult but how may we address

see a some sort of reaction from this Romulan to further indicate any
duplicity.

(Romulus - Senate Building- Conference Chamber Four- CSEC- Lt. Baylon
Trinin- Day 8- 1108)

A short while after Baylon's discussion with Jackson concerning their
situation, the doors to the chamber opened and a distinguished looking
Romulan entered the room. He seemed somewhat perturbed with the situation
although his years of political experience served him well.

As he approached the table he said, "Welcome my Federation friends," he held
out his open arms. "I hope you haven't been kept waiting too long?"

Raizel looked at the others then stood up, "Thank you. No, we have not been
waiting long at all."
As he listened and observed, Baylon felt the familiar tingle of telepathic
contact. He then received a message from Counselor Nayati.

::Do not trust his friendly words. His aura is saying something else. He is
very unhappy that we are here.::

::I believe it more likely that he is annoyed because he was not advised
earlier of our arrival. Although I could be mistaken.:: he replied back
mentally.

"Is everyone alright for refreshment?" the Romulan asked, "I can arrange for
some adequate liquids to drink, if you require?"

"I believe that we are fine for the moment, sir," she said plainly,
"however, if you could arrange for refreshments to be available to us during

"Certainly you recognize Senator Terrh, Counselor. He is a very influential
member of the senate, well-respected among his peers and even more feared by
his opponents. A shrewd judgment considering the difficulties in maintaining
an influential position within the Romulan Senate. I am also of the
understanding that the senator is a very skilled Orator, able to breathe
life into the masses with but a few impassioned words."

After Tom and Baylon had finished speaking, the doors to the chamber opened
and a distinguished looking Romulan entered the room.

The Romulan looked at the Federation team and spoke.

"Welcome my Federation friends," he held out his open arms. "I hope you
haven't been kept waiting too long?"

Jon Nayati spoke and asked the Romulan's name.

Baylon Trinin broke in and answered for the Romulan who turned out to be a
Senator named Terrh.

Baylon introduced Tom Jackson to the Senator.

"Good Day Senator Terrh. I am Lt Tom Jackson - a member of the Diplomatic
team" Tom said in greeting.

(reply: Senator Terrh)

Tom continued on, honestly complimenting the Senator on the magnificence of
the room they were in.

"Senator, I am truly in awe of your architecture" Tom said.

(Romulus - Senate Building, Conference Chamber Four - Senator Terrh - 1110)

As Terrh made his offering, he surprised to hear that the smallest and most
timid looking of the group stood up first. She reassured him that the group
was fine for refreshment at that time, and Terrh regarded her with an air of
curiosity. This woman was quite familiar to him, but he wasn't at all
certain why.

"...If you could arrange for refreshments to be available to us during the
negotiations we would be most appreciative." She had added in a rather plain
tone. "Will you be our attendant for this meeting?"

At that, Terrh raised an eyebrow. ~Certainly not!~ Terrh wanted to blast.
Using both hands, he flicked his robe out behind him, as if trying to show
emphasis on his fine threads. "No madam, the Uhlan's will see to that." He
still refrained from introducing himself still.

It was then that male interjected. "Thank you for your concern Sir. I am
Chief Counselor Nayati from the Hades. Who might you be Sir?" The male
spoke softly and Terrh was instantly pleased that this one seemed to be
placated. "I mean no insult but how may we address you? As an Aide to the
Praetor perhaps or are you a Senator?"

Just as Terrh was trying to decide why a ships counsellor had been invited
as part of a diplomacy team, a much more foreboding individual spoke up.
"Certainly you recognize Senator Terrh, Counselor. He is a very influential
member of the senate, well-respected among his peers and even more feared by
his opponents. A shrewd judgment considering the difficulties in
maintaining an influential position within the Romulan Senate. I am also of
the understanding that the senator is a very skilled Orator, able to breathe
life into the masses with but a few impassioned words."

~Now this one...~ thought Terrh, immediately impressed by the Starfleet
officer, ~...has done his homework~ He had never before thought that he had
been successful enough in his past to have people as far away as the
Federation know so much about him. Of course, the likelihood was that this
man was merely playing to his ego, but it worked very well on Terrh.

"Forgive my colleague's question Senator, there was much preparation to be
made and one only has so much time to memorize information. Allow me to
introduce myself, I am Lieutenant Baylon Trinin. This is Lieutenant Tom
Jackson. I am not part of the negotiating delegation, I am here in a
security capacity."

Raising a hand in momentary protest Terrh said, "There is nothing to
forgive, Baylon Trinin. It takes much more than that to offend me." Terrh
smiled and looked briefly at the Counsellor and said, "However, your
security guard is correct. I am indeed Senator Terrh, representative of the
Halestan District, and member of the continuing committee..." He then
looked back to Trinin and added, "...and I thank you for your kind words
Lieutenant. I would never boast such things, however true they are." With
that he smiled widely. ~Not to my public anyway~

It was then that the one known as Jackson made his introduction, which at
first appeared to be a little fruitless, given that that Baylon Trinin had
just made the introduction moments ago. He seemed young, maybe even
excitable. The fact that he was a member of this rag-tag team of federation
diplomats would certain work to his advantage.

"Senator, I am truly in awe of your architecture" said Jackson, looking at
his surroundings with no shortage of bewilderment.

Terrh laughed and shook his head ever so slightly. ~Easily impressed...a
good sign~ "Well there is no shortage of such architecture throughout our
great Capitol District. I am certain there will be plenty of time for such
things, during your stay."

(reply: Nayati, Jackson, Trinin, any)

As Terrh made his way to the table, the doors opened again and in walked two
more officials. As Terrh looked over his shoulder he noticed that it was
the Proconsul that entered. The Proconsul was directly beneath the Praetor,
and below him, the Vice-Proconsul. As Terrh seated himself, he was not
surprised to find that the Vice-Proconsul entered shortly after, followed by
two other Senators that made up the Continuing Committee.

"Terrh..." started Proconsul Daanel, entering in an even more lavish robe
that Terrh had worn. "...I see you wasted no time in coming to great our
guests." He looked at Terrh with a definite air of suspicion. Terrh had
been strongly opposed to these talks, yet now he was eager to meet with the
diplomats. ~It wouldn't surprise me if he is trying to sabotage these
negotiations before they have begun~

Terrh flashed a false smile back at Daanel, then looked at the Federation
people and offered, "My I introduce Proconsul Daanel, and Vice-Proconsul
Lenak." As they both approached, the smiled and nodded genuinely and
courteously toward the group, before making their way to the three chairs
that stood separate from the main table. As they sat down, they looked at
the group in further interest, at equal distances between the Federation
group, to their left, and the Romulan seating, to their right.

(reply: Nayati, Jackson, Trinin, any)

The other two unnamed Senators sat either side of Terrh and said nothing.
Terrh looked up at the group and said, "I'm sure Praetor will not keep us
waiting too long."

jumped in to save Jon's seemingly exposed diplomatic butt with a quick
diversion of attention.

".This is Lieutenant Tom Jackson. I am not part of the negotiating

Jon was totally fine with momentarily looking like a diplomatic @$$. Jon had
deliberately made that mistake to see if he could get a better and deeper
emotional read on both Senator Terrh and Ambassadorial Aide Raizel Grem. Jon
was especially looking for any sign of recognition between the two of them.

~In a kingdom of fools, a wise man wears a dunce cap. It is far better to be

overconfident. This can easily lead to an unsuspecting and powerful foe
making a very foolish mistake.~

mission's members make mistakes. If I can throw her off track too so much
the better,~ Jon thought to himself.
Jon bowed his head in an apparent gesture of respect, just enough so he
could get a peripheral true sight glance at Aide Grem. As Jon did this, Lt.
Trinin sent him a telepathic message.
::According to some information I was provided, he may have strong ties to
the head of the Tal'Shiar. Be careful what you say around and to him.
Especially considering that the Tal'Shiar oppose these negotiations.::
Baylon warned Jon.

::Understood Sir,:: Jon replied mentally. Keeping in character and raising
his head, Jon said respectfully, "I most humbly regret my words."

Raising a hand in momentary protest Terrh said, "There is nothing to
forgive, Baylon Trinin. It takes much more than that to offend me." Terrh
smiled and looked briefly at the Counselor and said, "However, your security
guard is correct. I am indeed Senator Terrh, representative of the Halestan
District, and member of the continuing committee..." He then looked back to
Trinin and added, "...and I thank you for your kind words Lieutenant. I
would never boast such things, however true they are." With that he smiled
widely.

Before he could reply Jackson had introduced himself in a most redundant
fashion. Baylon bit his tongue and listened then as Jackson turned the
conversation to the architecture.

Terrh laughed and shook his head ever so slightly. "Well there is no
shortage of such architecture throughout our great Capitol District. I am
certain there will be plenty of time for such things, during your stay."

"I am certainly looking forward to the opportunity to see more of your
magnificent capital and learning more of the Way of D'era. And if you
wouldn't mind Senator, I would appreciate any favor that you could offer me
in gaining a brief audience with my Romulan counterpart for the security of
these talks, so that we may compare notes and so that I may see to it that
we conform to any rules that your security officer would impose upon us."
Baylon added.

(reply Terrh, Jackson, Nayati, Others present)

"Your consideration is much appreciated." he replied

Terrh indicated his desire to take his place at the table and so Baylon
stepped away and provided him with a respectful berth, head slightly
downcast and eyes firmly fixed on the floor as the Senator passed.

Once the Senator was seated, the doors to the chamber opened again and
Baylon immediately recognized the Proconsul and the Vice Proconsul, as well
as two other senators. He had seen limited dossiers on them all and so at
least had some idea as to whom they were.

There wasn't any time or energy wasted; as shortly after entering the room
the Proconsul spoke.
"Terrh..." started Proconsul Daanel, "...I see you wasted no time in coming
to greet our guests."
Here was the second most powerful man in the entire Romulan Empire. And
trailing only slightly behind him was the third.

Terrh flashed a smile back at Daanel, then looked at the Federation people
and offered, "May I introduce Proconsul Daanel, and Vice-Proconsul Lenak."

(reply: Nayati, Jackson, any)

Once the other members had greeted the new arrivals Baylon nodded politely
and said. "Proconsul, Vice Proconsul. I am Lieutenant Baylon Trinin. I am
the head of the Federation security detail and will not be acting in any
other capacity during the negotiations, however if in some way I may be of
use to you during my time here, I would be honored to find myself at your
service."

(reply Proconsul, Vice Proconsul as needed)

Once that part of the introductions were completed, Baylon took a seat
farthest away from the diplomats as could be had. He was not an active
participant in the negotiations and so did not need to sit near the other
delegates.

He desperately felt that he should report in to the First Officer, but was
concerned that any communications would be monitored. He did have the
opportunity to use his telepathy, but he had not arranged permission with
Lemar prior to their departure. That meant that he would reserve that option
until there were no others left to him.

That decided, he would leave it to Frazier to report in, since she was
technically in charge of the delegation and by proxy the away mission.

(Reply Terrh, Tom Jackson, Any others present)

"Your consideration is much appreciated," replied Lt. Trinin.

Senator Terrh indicated his desire to take his place at the table and so
Baylon stepped aside respectfully.

After the Senator indicated his desire to sit at the table, Jon stepped back
deferentially to allow him to sit where he wished.

(USS Hades-Sickbay-Lt. Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere-1100)

Angeni sat quietly by Sash's side, only leaving to use the various facilites
or to take care of her various patients. After the initial scare that he
gave her, she vowed to never leave his side until he woke up. She didn't
know if it was based upon the nagging thought that she had set back his
progress. They had to increase his Propofol and Succs dosages, and he was
receiving 300 milligrams of Amiodarone to combat the occasional burst of
Atrial Tach.

With the bay unusually quiet considering it was almost 1100 hours, she had
let the crews down to the bare essentials; three nurses and two medics who
were currently in Ten Forward enjoying an early lunch. She didn't want to
seem like a work horse, so she always gave everyone ample freedom,
especially when times were slow. There was no need to keep the crew on
constant vigil, especially with the Captain in their midst.

She knew just how it felt to work on a superior officer, and
the less that they were around him when they had nothing to do to distract
them was the best she could possibly do for him.

"Oh Captain...if you only knew..." She turned and looked at him, listening
to the rhythmic hiss of the ventilator. "I don't know why it's so easy to
talk to you like this...maybe it's the thought that you won't tell me how
much of a...oh I dont't know...how horrible I've done over the past few
weeks. I feel like I've failed you. I took on the responsibility to help
and heal those that I come in contact with, but alas, I am unable to fix
you. If I could wave a magic wand and make it all better, I would." She
turned fully to him, touching his hand lightly before returning her hands to
her lap.

"I really think you've done a phenominal job so far. I will admit, you did
have some pretty big shoes to fill. If I say so myself, you're one of the
more personable Captains' I've ever met. The more I think
about it, I believe I'm the only one, if not one of the few who are still
left from the Myst since Cindy and Mason left..." She paused for a moment
to fiddle with a few controls. "I hope to actually get to know the man
behind the Captain at some point in the future, but for now, I'm more than
happy to be your Doctor."

She stood up from her chair, looking over the Medicated Captain. Tenderly,
she repositioned him, putting pillows under his knees and back to keep
bio-bed sores from forming. She re-wrapped the braces around his hands that
applied pressure in random intervals to move his fingers. She decreased the
pressure bandages a bit to make sure she wasn't completely cutting off blood
flow. She removed his pseudo-gown, changing it and cleaning up various
bodily fluids before covering him back up. She reached into her pocket,
pulling out a staple of her care for her comatose patients, something she
had been using since her med school days. It was a very intricate Dream
Catcher made from silk thread. The thing wasn't much bigger than her thumb,
and she slipped it just under his head rest.

"Sweet dreams, my friend."

She walked into the office, sitting down at her desk. She saw fluctuating
signs on the readout from those that were on the surface. She tapped her
comm badge, her voice soft.

~The Captain better wake up soon, or I'm putting myself in for a
commendation, promotion, and two week vacation on Risa!~ Maybe she should
should drag the comatose Captain with her and claim it was for his medical
benefit, that way it wouldn't cut into her R&R time. Somehow though, she
didn't think the Hades' CMO was enough of a dim bulb to fall for that.
~Unless I managed to convince her that she had to come to her for the
Captain's health and safety..~

She smiled at the officer who had presented yet another present to a Romulan
and claimed it for the growing pile. She hoped that Romulans appreciated
Federation members gave gifts as a sign of hospitality, hopeful friendship,
or general appreciation and not that they were trying to bribe the Romulan
officers into something. Though, she wasn't quite sure the Romulan Security
Officer would recognize the yo-yo as ancient weapon instead of toy.
Fortunately, Ensign Coronus had been distracted from reciting the history of
the whole whichever earth empire it came from. ~Really, some officers
shouldn't be allowed out in public.~

Overhearing a conversation betweenst crew and guest she'd put little signs
beside some of the dishes. A flower to indicate their vegetarian origin. She
didn't think Commander Lemar would find little pictures of cows funny. It
was something she should have thought of sooner. Boy, she could happily say
she was glad she wasn't the ten forward overseer, doing this on a daily
basis would drive her bonky.

(USS Hades - 10 Forward - Crewman Denise Lebranski - 1140)

Thinking of the first officer, Denise noticed he was starting to wilt. She
pressed a mug of the real coffee into his hands on one of her trips past.
The Chief Engineer was looking like he was running out of things to discuss
with the Romulan, so Denise accidently shorted out one of replicators on the
fountain. Pain in the ass thing took her four tries to break, too.

"Pardon me, sir," she said as humbly as she possibly could, "I hate to
bother you, but could perchance you look at the fountain? I think the power
thingy mixed with the water.." Plasma and water WAS bad right? Hopefully not
evacuate the ship bad.. Hmm, maybe she should have thought this plan out
better. Oh well, she was sure two engineers would have their heads buried in
fountain guts soon enough either way.

(Reply)

Oh, best keep that happy Horta busy so he didn't fix it for her. She
accidently-on-purpose left a isolinear chip of soft bell chimes in the
fountain like someone had forgotten to include a way for it to be plugged in
to play to the music and went to find Lieutenant Maraht.

"How are you doing, Lieutenant?" she asked, catching his attention.

(Reply Maraht)

Denise spotted a suspicious red mark on his shell. Hmm, almost matched the
red passion lipstick she was wearing. Now, did she wipe it off, tell him
about it or just leave it be? She didn't know the level of awareness the
Horta had of his skin.

"Is there anything I can do for you?" She asked, hoping she could keep him
occupied long enough for engineers, pointy eared and not, to get busy.

(USS Hades - 10 Forward - Lieutenant Ardena Carrow - 1135)

Ardena had been amused by the Commander's reaction to the gift. Well, it was
a symbol at best, but how do you say 'Thank you for the tree of a legend of
our people millennia old?' Not to mention, the Romulans may not want to
remember their origin. Whoops. Well, it just proved why he was a diplomat
and she wasn't. Er, she thought he was a diplomat anyway. Even if he wasn't,
he was better at it than her!

A perky blonde in a red uniform practically appeared at the Commander's
elbow to take the gift to tell him it would be held till he was ready to
leave. Ardena watched her place it on the counter of the bar of ten forward.
~There's an example of energy never dies. I bet she'll still be bouncy and
chirpy at 90.~

She'd followed the Commander to the food tables and identified what she
could. Even with being raised on Earth, she didn't recognize all the foods
of the major federation races. She could offer the reassurance that nothing
was made from the flesh of animals, but replicated, but little beyond that.
She, herself, had stuck to the identifiable vegetarian dishes.

After exchanging wry observations of their mutual societies, Ardena had been
happy to release the Commander to the next Starfleet officer wanting to
learn about Romulans. She had the feeling that if the Commander had wanted
to set his keen intellect into picking her brain clean, he could have
without her noticing until after the fact.

A look around the room showed everyone talking to everyone else and
seemingly enjoying the company. She suddenly felt very alone on a ship full
of people. She placed the ceramic plate on the pile some operations
personnel seemed to be clearing regularly and retreated to the floor to
ceiling windows of Ten Forward. A gaping chasm of loneliness swept through
her. She missed Suri, a great emptiness in soul and heart, she wished T'Vhor
were here to bolster her mental bulwarks, she missed her quarters of trees
and birds, her labs, her friends and family.

Feeling her tentative control of her telepathic abilities slipping, she felt
it was probably best to get out of here in a hurry before she blasted
Romulan or crew mate. With smile and cheerful word she made her way out of
Ten Forward. Doors closing behind her, Ardena managed not to run to the
turbolift, but still felt security return as the doors closed. "Bridge." She
told the turbolift. Full staff on the bridge, the least she could do would
be to relieve Lieutenant Jenkins and let the woman get her peer and poke at
their guests. She was sure other senior officers would be doing the same
later. The Romulans were scheduled for a few hours, after all.

(USS Hades - 10 Forward - Lieutenant Ardena Carrow - 1145)

Having relieved the science officer and the on watch officer, Ardena settled
into the command chair. ~Bigger than the Spectre's~ she thought to herself
as she tried to sit in it without feeling like a kid sitting at the adult's
table. ~But then, Captain Sash is *slightly* larger than T'Vhor.~

Picturing an assembly room somewhere on McKinley where they measured the
backsides of Captain's for the future command chairs amused herself almost
enough to forget the hollowness that was wrapping her chest. The pain and
lonliness had been gone for so long, she'd healed, gotten over it, why did
it return now?

She stared out at the beautiful planet below for several heartbeats as she
listened to the party in ten forward. The buffet table was wired for sound
and picture, though she wasn't watching the security feeds. To her the
Romulans seemed to be trying to figuring out just why would their leaders be
wanting to make nice with the Federation when they should just be stomping
all over it. ~And making nice till they figure out the catch.~ Which,
considering, was what her crewmates were doing, maybe the two sides had more
in common than they thought.

Mind more than able to handle more than one task at a go, she called up the
oceanographic scans. May as well see what this world had instead of dolphins
while she kept an eye on the neighbours.

(USS Hades - 10 Forward - Lieutenant Ardena Carrow - 1401)

She'd been rather startled that the first officer hadn't kicked her out of
the command chair or sent her back down. She had the feeling she'd be
justifying her actions later. ~Sorry Commander, didn't want to give a
Romulan guest a two tonne dump of emotional negativity for desert!~ didn't
sound like a good excuse considering she'd come up and taken over command of
the vessel. Oh well, she had at least five minutes to think of something
good.

~How about, my Assistant was suitable for the greeting party, he must be
suitable for the party?~ No, that just sounded petty and catty. She couldn't
actually vocalize the thought of ~You can't pick up your comm. badge? Can't
call down to Science and say 'Hey, Ardena, Romulans arriving.. get your ass
up to the transporter room!'?" Good humour overcame grumpies, ~And did you
wash behind your ears? Clean your room? Remember anything important young
man??~ Gee, Ardena, maybe the man had a few stresses to worry about.

She'd just tell the truth, if asked, she felt she'd best serve listening

"No I have not. I am a vegetarian, I do not eat the flesh of animals." Uhlan
S'Tarleya said flatly.
Norm smiled and shrugged before shoveling his meat into his mouth. After he
finally swallowed he looked up at her. "Mm, you're missing out! Melts like
butter!"

She ignored the comment. "Did you know that the Romulan Star Empire has
several variations of quantum singularity engines? I am curious if the
Federation has several variations on the basic warp drive as well, or do
they rely on the same basic system in all their vessels?" she asked instead.

Norm nodded his understanding, "Ah, yeah." He put his knife and fork around
the edges of his plate as he spoke, "That we do... well. As you say, the
basic idea is all the same, but the antimatter relays do vary. This, as you
probably have noticed, is a relatively new ship. It took a while for me to
get used the these engines - If that's what you're asking. Then again, no
body called me chief on our old ship. I was still the ACEO." He smiled at
her, and then immediately wondered why he thought she would care. In all
honesty, if someone else had said it to him, he wouldn't care either.

The Romulan Sub-Commander agreed to sit down at Ranae's table, though he was
looking at her rather intently as if studying her.

~Most likely never seen a Cardi-Bajoran.~ Ranae figured, ~I wonder what's
going through his head right now.~

"What would you like to know about our tactical systems?" Ranae asked and
then popped a piece of the pastry into her mouth, chewing it as she waited
for an answer.

"Well, I would very much like to know, why does your Federation prefer
phased energy weapons to disruptor weapons, such as ours? It has always
been something that I have wondered, about other...minor races and empires
that we have come across in our history."

"In all honesty I am unsure, but believe it is regarded as an inhumane
device that kills too slowly and with much anguish, apart from that I have
no idea if there are other reasons for it not to be used by the Federation."

Lhaes added an opinion of his own, expressing that he considered the rate of
fire and power of each blast to be far more efficient when it came to
battle, and asked Ranae if she would agree that on a warship like Hades,
such weapons would be a great benefit.

With a smile Ranae answered him, "Sir, I am a Tactical Officer as such I
would gladly use any and all weapons available for my use, in order to
affect maximum damage."
She sipped her drink.

"Have you personally ever used a phaser?"

The Human engineer continued eating his animal flesh, chewing it in slow
deliberate motions of his jaw before swallowing it. He then exclaimed, "Mm,
you're missing out! Melts like butter!"
S'Tarleya simply offered a weak smile, since she had no idea what this
'butter' was and could only assume that it was some sort of compliment for
this animal flesh to melt so, despite the obviousness of the fact that flesh
could not actually shift from a solid to a liquid state with the sole
application of heat. She could however surmise that 'butter' could
considering the context of the statement.

"Did you know that the Romulan Star Empire has several variations of quantum
singularity engines? I am curious if the Federation has several variations
on the basic warp drive as well, or do they rely on the same basic system in

Norm nodded his understanding, "Ah, yeah." He put his knife and fork around

get used the these engines - If that's what you're asking. Then again, no
body called me chief on our old ship. I was still the ACEO." He smiled at
her.

"So this vessel is the first that you have served on as her Chief Engineer?"
S'Tarleya asked. "I find that very interesting, considering that I would
have thought that a more experienced department head would be more suitable
for such a warship as this."

The Chief engineer changed the subject.

"So tell me," he said, looking around nervously, "What do you think of our
ship, so far?"

"It is opulent and the compartments seem to waste space. The design, while
of a sound tactical nature, at first glance, seems to be focused more on
less than ideal mission objectives. The predilection for exploration among
the Federation starship designers has obviously cost you where the
efficiency of this ship's design is concerned. With some redesign and some
reallocation of internal space, it may be possible to refit this vessel into
a proper warship, perhaps even one that might serve adequately in the
Romulan fleet, although obviously only in a support role, since she lacks
the firepower to be a first ship of the line." S'Tarleya replied honestly.

He then reached out for a bowl of vegetables and offered it across the table
to her. "Hungry?"
S'Tarleya regarded the dish of vegetables, then smiled. "Yes, I believe I
am. Thank you for your consideration."

She picked up a nearby fork from the table and gingerly plunged it into the
salad. She lifted a few speared pieces of the vegetable medley to her mouth,
careful not to lose any of the liquid sauce that was poured over it on the
tabletop and placed it in her mouth.

The result was a shock of flavor, unlike anything that she had ever had
before. It was amazing. A bitter sweet mixture, combined with the crisp
texture of the vegetables was exhilarating.

"I am very impressed with this dish, Harper. It is delicious." she said
smiling before placing a second forkful of salad in her mouth.

(USS Hades - Deck 10, Ten Forward - FO Commander Jonas Lemar - 1140)

Since leaving the chief engineering and tactical officers to entertain the
Romulan guests, Jonas had headed off to locate the Romulan Commander and
talk to him a little more. As it happened, Ensign McKenzie had accosted him
and was discussing something or another, so Jonas decided to mill around and
generally mingle with his own senior staff.

It seemed that Shayhiloosh was keeping hirself to hirself now after hir
encounter with Uhlan S'Tarleya. S/he appeared to be drooping hir boughs
slightly, so Jonas decided to move over and make an attempt to liven up the
Arborian. As he approached, he saw a blinking eye-bulb bob in his general
direction, and as a result he smiled. ~I wonder if it is ever possible to
sneak up on an Arborian~ thought Jonas, thinking how useful it was to have
three independent eyes to look over your surroundings. The mere thought or
the practicality was confusing to his human mind, but the concept seemed
appealing.

Coming to a stop quite close the leafy appendage Jonas asked, "How did your
encounter go, Ensign?" He looked over to S'Tarleya briefly, who now
appeared to be deep in conversation with Norman Harper. He then looked back
to the blinking eye-bulb that was near to him.

(reply: Shayhiloosh)

Just then, Yeoman Lebranski approached with a steaming mug and handed it
toward him. Jonas graciously accepted the beverage, but was surprised that
the Yeoman didn't stop to speak, but carried on moving. She appeared to be
doing her best to keep the senior staff fed and watered, and although Jonas
hadn't expected that to be her job during this event, he was pleased she was
getting her hands dirty to help.

Taking a sip from the mug of coffee, Jonas looked away from Lebranski and
looked back to his Arborian crew member. "So Shayhiloosh, I haven't really
had much time to speak with you of late." Lowering the mug and offering a
warm smile he asked, "How have you and your sibling settled in?

(reply: Shayhiloosh)

(USS Hades - Deck 10, Ten Forward - FO Commander Jonas Lemar - 1146)

Jonas had noticed out of the corner of his eye that Lieutenant Carrow had
made an exit a few minutes before. She had been the first of his staff to
try and speak with Commander Rhian, and Jonas hoped that she had made a good
impression. Looking at the Commander, who was still engaged in conversation
with Kenneth McKenzie, he didn't appear to be unhappy, so in turn that made
Jonas quite pleased.

Just as Jonas was beginning to enjoy his 'catchup' with Shayhiloosh, his
comm. badge sounded quietly. =^= Dr. Trommashere to Commander Lemar, I have
some questions about the Away Teams' life signs if you have a moment to
talk...sir...=^=

With a soft tap of his badge he responded, "Doctor..." he said, a little
surprised to hear from the Doctor. After all, he had expected her to be
here at the party. He had of course noticed that she hadn't be present at
the transporter room, but his initial thought was that she had been delayed
by something of greater importance. He hoped this wasn't it. "...I'll be
right with you."

(reply: Trommashere)

As the doctor signed off, Jonas made his apologies to the science officer.
"If you'll excuse me Ensign," He stepped away and said, "Enjoy the rest of
the luncheon."

(reply: Shayhiloosh)

Immediately, Jonas approached Commander Rhian. He was about to depart for
sickbay, to meet with the Chief Medical Officer, but he wanted to let Rhian
know what was going on. Jonas beckoned Ensign T'Sol, the lead security
officer present, wanting her to come with him toward the Romulan Commander.
As Jonas approached, McKenzie and Rhian paused with their conversation, and
the commander looked back at him expectantly.

As T'Sol arrived at his side, Jonas spoke to the Commander. "I apologise,
but I've been called away temporarily." He paused momentarily to offer a
silent apology to McKenzie for interrupting his discussion with the Romulan
warship captain. "When you and your people are ready, Ensign T'Sol here is
going to give you an escorted guide of our ship."

Jonas looked over at T'Sol. He hadn't forewarned her that she was about to
take on this role, and Jonas expected that if she were capable of showing
surprise, then she would have. Looking back to the commander he added,
"I'll join you as soon as I am able."

(reply: Rhian, T'Sol)

Satisfied that he had left the Romulans in more-than-capable hands, Jonas
made his exit from the room. ~That should be interesting~ thought Jonas,
wondering how the Romulan's would take to being guided by a Vulcan, a
distant cousin of their own people. ~Enlightening I think is the word~
Jonas smiled and headed out of the doors.

Coming to a stop quite close to Shayhiloosh, Jonas asked, "How did your
encounter go, Ensign?" He glanced over to S'Tarleya briefly, and then
looked back to the blinking eyebulb that was nearest him.

"I am now finding it disturbing the more that I think about it. Uhlan
S'Tarleya kept asking repeatedly what tribute we as Arborians gave to the
Federation in order to remain unconquered. I explained that at this point in
time, Arboria Prime has not yet joined the Federation, but have been
considering doing so. When I explained that according to the charter for the
Federation, the races that have joined do not pay a tribute, but pool
resources for purposes of trade and allocations of planetary resources as
governed by themselves, she did not appear to wish to accept that as an
answer, insistent that the poolig of resources was still a type of tribute.
I saw little point in continuing the conversation as I felt it would be
potentially counterproductive."

(Reply Jonas Lemar IYW)

Just then, Yeoman Lebranski approached Commander Lemar with a steaming mug
and handed it to him. The First Officer graciously accepted the beverage.
Yeoman Lebranski didn't stop to speak, but moved on.

Taking a sip from the mug of coffee, Cmdr Lemar looked at his Arborian
crewmember. "So Shayhiloosh, I haven't really had much time to speak with
you of late." Lowering the mug and offering a warm smile he asked, "How
have you and your sibling settled in?"

"I have adopted Shureshlee as my Child, Sir. Technically s/he is my
offspring as I could have self-pollinated when I felt the time was right. A
Child much like Shureshlee in coloration would have been the result,"
explained Shayhiloosh. "Although Shureshlee is very intelligent, the only
abnormality to date is that s/he is overly large for hir age due to hir
origins."

S/he continued, "Although Shureshlee was having a difficult time at the
beginning with the other school children, s/he has settled in admirably and
is excelling at the educational advanced classes. S/he has even made a
friend or two." Shayhiloosh could not stop hir main branches from swelling
with obvious pride. "I have to say I am very proud of Shureshlee. When s/he
is ready, I will present hir to the Council on Arboria Prime to enter into
adulthood. But that may not be for some time."

(Reply Jonas Lemar IYW)

"Shureshlee, out of curiosity, had been studying the Romulan Empire for a
report for a class. Today on the Dreamplane, prior to my arrival here in Ten
Forward, Shureshlee had some fear regarding the arrival of the Romulans. As
you might know, negative emotions can have a dangerous impact on those who
are on the Dreamplane if not handled well. I stayed on the Dreamplane with
Shureshlee to help hir handle the fear and uncertainty. Until today,
Shureshlee had been doing well there."

"The fear was connected to how the Romulans might perceive us as alien
beings to the Romulan culture. From I have seen of past encounters in the
computer records, Shureshlee's fears are not unfounded. My own personal
encounter with Uhlan S'Tarleya has only confirmed their documented inability
to adjust their rigid thinking to new parameters. I sincerely and fervently
hope that not all Romulans share that trait for the success of the treaty
negotiations."

After speaking with Centurion Mavus for some time, Maraht felt he should
excuse himself and allow others to speak with her. He rumbled his way over
to the rock and plant garden.
Maraht noted Yeoman Lebranski moving toward him and halted near the stones.

"How are you doing, Lieutenant?" she asked. He noted her studying him
intently with an odd look on her face.

"I am fine, Yeoman. I am trying to decide which of these rocks to sample
first."
"Is there anything I can do for you?" she asked.

Maraht studied her expression and then said, "You appear to be looking at me
strangely as if I have suddenly grown another main phalange or inexplicably
birthed an egg. Have I done so and no one has told me?" Maraht waved his
main phalange again with laughter.

(USS Hades - Deck 10, Ten Forward - Sub-Commander Lhaes - 1142)

Lhaes was not surprised at the tone the Lieutenant used when she answered
him. It was almost as if she thought he were testing her, and she was
acting a little defensively - at least that's how it appeared to Lhaes. The
thought amused him, and as Ammon sipped at her drink, so did he.

"Have you personally ever used a Phaser?" she asked, setting her drink to
one side and looking at him.

~The last time I used a Phaser...that is a long time ago~ he thought to
himself. "I have, but I really don't recall how long ago it was exactly."
Lhaes recalled an incident in his past and decided to regale the Tactical
Lieutenant with the story. "My ship had come across a Yridian shipping
lane. As you are no doubt aware," he started, putting on a serious face,
"The Yridian people are a group of scavengers and pirates, and I was
assigned the task of inspecting their cargo for contraband items."

Taking another sip of his drink, he wondered if Ammon was interested in his
tale. Then it occurred to him that he didn't really care, and he would tell
it anyway. "My team and I beamed aboard, and their crew did not conform to
regulations. The Captain thought he could escape with his contraband if he
disarmed my men." He gave a small shrug and finished, "As a result, I was
forced to steal his own weapon and use it to punish him."

He smiled and looked to the Uhlan at his side, uncertain of whether she too
was listening to his story. Looking back to Ammon he added, "It was a crude
weapon by Romulan standards, but it was effective and sending a message to
the pirate crew and their NEW Captain."

"How about you Lieutenant, have you ever used a disruptor in your past?"

(USS Hades - Deck 10, Ten Forward - CTAC Lt. Ammon Ranae - 1144)

To Ranae's question, Lhaes replied that he had used a phaser but couldn't
recall how long ago, and continued by telling her a story of when his ship
came across a Yridian shipping lane.
"As you are no doubt aware," he said, his face taking on a serious look.
"The Yridian people are a group of scavengers and pirates, and I was
assigned the task of inspecting their cargo for contraband items."

Ranae was indeed familiar with the Yridian species, which had been thought
to be extinct in the mid 24th. century. It was believed that some natural
(or unnatural) disaster had befallen the race sometime between the 2150s and
the 2360s. It was a matter of personal conjecture whether or not it was a
good thing that a Starfleet exobiologist named Rudolph Ransom, had
discovered that there were in fact some Yridian still alive and had carried
out first contact, for they were a most untrustworthy and devious species.

~Then again, we have thought the same of the Romulans. Still do, so far.~

Suppressing a smile at that thought, Ranae gave the Sub-Commander a
congenial nod and prepared herself to listen to a tale from him, hoping it
would be an interesting one, and if not interesting at least short, and
would give her some insight in to his character.

"My team and I beamed aboard, and their crew did not conform to regulations.
The Captain thought he could escape with his contraband if he disarmed my
men." He gave a small shrug and finished, "As a result, I was forced to
steal his own weapon and use it to punish him."

Lhaes smiled and looked to the the female Romulan seated next to him who was
conversing with the CEO and eating a salad. Looking back to Ammon he added,
"It was a crude weapon by Romulan standards, but it was effective and
sending a message to the pirate crew and their NEW Captain."

~I see! So by punishing him he actually meant that he killed him. Then
he's a ruthless, merciless man.~ Ranae was less than impressed but kept her
face impassive.

"How about you Lieutenant, have you ever used a disruptor in your past?"

"No Sir, I have never used a real disruptor, only a holo-simulated one
during training scenarios." She replied. ~Neither do I wish ever use a
real one in the future.~ The CTAC thought, taking a sip of her drink.

"Do you have holodecks on your ships? Or is that considered a waste of
space?"

(USS Hades - Deck 10, Ten Forward - FO Commander Jonas Lemar - 1143)

As Jonas asked about the Arborian's encounter with the Romulan Uhlan, he
noticed a distinct droop in hir branches as she explained that her
conversation had disturbed her. ~A little strong~ thought Jonas as he
listened, but soon understood that Shayhiloosh's delicate nature might not
take too kindly to the usual abrupt superiority of the general Romulan
personality.

"...I saw little point in continuing the conversation as I felt it would be
potentially counterproductive."

Jonas gave a little shrug, "Oh well, at least you gave it a shot. I didn't
expect every one of us to get along." Jonas gave a disheartened smile.
Just then, Jonas received a beverage from Yeoman Lebranski, and as he
sipped, he turned back to Shayhiloosh and asked about hir youngling.

Shay explained that rather than a sibling, Shureshlee was hir child. Jonas
hadn't realised this before, but then, given the difference in culture, he
forgave himself for the mistake. "...Although Shureshlee is very
intelligent, the only abnormality to date is that s/he is overly large for
hir age due to hir origins."

"So she has some sort of accelerated growth?" Jonas raised his eyebrows in
interest. He had known previously that s/he had been rescued from a
biogenic research centre on Cait, but he had not realised that this young
Arborian was anything other than normal. He had to admit that he felt he a
little guilty for not knowing more regarding the medical condition of
Shureshlee. Maybe that was something he would be sure to rectify, when
things were back to normal.

Jonas listened as Shayhiloosh proudly spoke of how hir child was doing in
her studies. She was excelling at advanced classes in school, classes meant
for a much higher age group. And then Shay's branches rustled gleefully as
s/he said "I have to say I am very proud of Shureshlee. When s/he is ready,
I will present hir to the Council on Arboria Prime to enter into adulthood.
But that may not be for some time."

"A child prodigy. What parent wouldn't be proud to present such a thing?"
Jonas smiled warmly, extending a hand to place it on Shay's quivering bough.
S/he was clearly very pleased to be speaking about Shureshlee in such a
manner.

It was then that Shayhiloosh's tone changed, and s/he spoke her airy tone
took a more quietened and concerned tone. "Shureshlee, out of curiosity,
had been studying the Romulan Empire for a report for a class. Today on the
Dreamplane, prior to my arrival here in Ten Forward, Shureshlee had some
fear regarding the arrival of the Romulans. As you might know, negative
emotions can have a dangerous impact on those who are on the Dreamplane if

"The fear was connected to how the Romulans might perceive us as alien

encounter with Uhlan S'Tarleya has only confirmed their documented inability
to adjust their rigid thinking to new parameters. I sincerely and fervently
hope that not all Romulans share that trait for the success of the treaty
negotiations."

Jonas shook his head, then tried to speak in a reassuring tone. "We must
not be quick to judge their entire people on the opinions of just a few."
Jonas shot a glance back toward S'Tarleya, "I doubt she holds much sway
where it counts." Jonas looked back at the Arborian and added, "Commander
Rhian and Centurion Mavus both seem to be eager for these talks to succeed."
As he took a sip from his mug he then added again, "And don't forget we have
the support of the most powerful Romulan of all, Praetor Vrih."

(reply: Shayhiloosh)

"I am curious though," started Jonas with a renewed interest. "These
negative emotions you speak of from the Dreamplane, are you able to see
where they come from? I'm curious as to how they might manifest themselves
on the Dreamplane." Jonas had to wonder if this was really the time to be
talking in depth about something like the Dreamplane. It was something that
had never truly been studied before, and Jonas was curious as to whether it
could be used to their advantage in some way.

"It's just.. uhm, well, I seem to have left my mark on you." She pulled her
compact out of her trouser pocket and angled in a attempt to show Maraht the
mark. He realized it was lip color that many humanoids wore to enhance their
natural looks to make them more attractive.
"I would prefer to wear it proudly as a badge of honor, since it is from

on a Horta is not standard issue. Besides, we can't set a bad example in

(USS Hades-Sickbay-Lt. Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere-1145)

Angeni sat quietly by Sash's side, only leaving to use the various
facilities or to take care of her various patients. After the initial scare
that he gave her, she vowed to never leave his side until he woke up. She
didn't know if it was based upon the nagging thought that she had set back
his progress. They had to increase his Propofol and Succs dosages, and he
was receiving 300 milligrams of Amiodarone to combat the occasional burst of
Atrial Tach.

She knew just how it felt to work on a superior officer, and the less that
they were around him when they had nothing to do to distract them was the
best she could possibly do for him.

"Oh Captain...if you only knew..." She turned and looked at him, listening
to the rhythmic hiss of the ventilator. "I don't know why it's so easy to
talk to you like this...maybe it's the thought that you won't tell me how
much of a...oh I don't know...how horrible I've done over the past few
weeks. I feel like I've failed you. I took on the responsibility to help
and heal those that I come in contact with, but alas, I am unable to fix
you. If I could wave a magic wand and make it all better, I would." She
turned fully to him, touching his hand lightly before returning her hands to
her lap.

"I really think you've done a phenomenal job so far. I will admit, you did
have some pretty big shoes to fill. If I say so myself, you're one of the
more personable Captains' I've ever met. The more I think about it, I
believe I'm the only one, if not one of the few who are still left from the
Myst since Cindy and Mason left..." She paused for a moment to fiddle with
a few controls. "I hope to actually get to know the man behind the Captain
at some point in the future, but for now, I'm more than happy to be your
Doctor."

As such, she had no difficulty noticing the Commander's gesture indicating

Jonas spoke to the Commander. "I apologize, but I've been called away

As the doctor signed off, Jonas made his apologies to the science officer.
"If you'll excuse me Ensign." He stepped away and said, "Enjoy the rest of

By the time he had finished making his excuses and arrangements for the

Angeni was waiting to show him. So, in an effort to make up for it, Jonas
had decided to jog the hallways until he arrived at Sickbay.

As he stepped through the doors, he realised that he had not seen Wendy for
a long time. He had left their quarters rather early that morning, so hadn't
had much chance to spend time with her. When he didn't see her working away
anywhere, Jonas's heart sank a little. With an inward sigh he thought ~Oh
well, I'm sure I'll see her later~

It didn't take him long to find the Chief Medical Officer, standing by a

"Aren't you supposed to be at a certain
Luncheon, helping to entertain some Romulans?"

Angeni turned to Jonas, a weak smile on her face. She brushed a whisp or
two of hair away from her face, turning to face the man fully.

"Take it for what it's worth, sir, with the constant flux of the Captain's
vitals, I wanted to be here just in case something were to go bad...Also..."
She said with a smirk, "I'm not much of a disaster. I don't want to ruin
peace talks by screwing up the Two Step..."

"So, what is it you need to talk to me about? What's happening with the
away team? Are they alright?"

"As far as I can tell, yes..."

She gestured to the screen, tapping a few things. The screen showed various
colored dots with almost a ripple effect around them. At various intervals,
the rippling would get faster and an alarm would sound.

"I'm not sure if it's interferrance or what that's causing it. The
secondary backup is showing all systems go for those on the surface, but at
various points, the signal either weakens, or is interfeared with, causing a
'Code Red'. I was able to get a better fix on them, but the readings are
still the same."

Angeni turned to face him fully, "My concern is, I'm not sure just how
stable the 'normal' vitals are. If something does happen, and the readings
stay normal, I won't have any way of knowing, in the same sentance, I don't
want to be beaming anyone out just because of a scudgy reading..."
"Have you spoken with any of the away team?"

(USS Hades - Deck 10, Sickbay - FO Commander Jonas Lemar - 1153)

Jonas was pleased that the Chief Medical officer appeared to be well. He
didn't really hold it against her that she hadn't been present in ten
forward, and given what she was working on down here, he was pleased that
she had decided to stay. He asked about the away team, wondering if they
were all right.

"As far as I can tell, yes..." The doctor indicated toward a large screen
on the wall near to where she had been standing. She typed in a few
commands and the screen soon changed to show various coloured dots, with
some kind of 'ripple' effect surrounding them. At seemingly random
intervals, the rippling would speed up, then the computer would sound an
alarm.

As Jonas looked at the display, he was unsure what to make of it. He could
see a general schematic, which showed them to be inside a large chamber of
some kind, but as for the ripples, he just wasn't certain. The technology
being used to monitor the team wasn't standard issue, and was something that
Trinin had cooked up with the engineers. He had no idea how to read it
correctly, so he looked back to the doctor for an explanation.

"I'm not sure if it's interference or what that's causing it. The secondary
backup is showing all systems go for those on the surface, but at various
points, the signal either weakens, or is interfered with, causing a 'Code
Red'. I was able to get a better fix on them, but the readings are still
the same."

~At least we can keep a transporter lock~ thought Jonas, not entirely sure
how much use that would be without the rest of the data to enable them to
discover if a beam out was at all necessary.

It was then that Doctor Trommashere turned away from the screen and looked
to face him. "My concern is, I'm not sure just how stable the 'normal'
vitals are. If something does happen, and the readings stay normal, I won't
have any way of knowing, in the same sentence, I don't want to be beaming
anyone out just because of a scudgy reading..."

"Scudgy...?" Jonas said as he looked with a frown at the Doctor. He was
unfamiliar with the term, but he got the general meaning.

Seeming to shrug off Lemar's comment, she asked, "Have you spoken with any
of the away team?"

"Not yet," replied Jonas, not able to keep the frustration out of his tone
of voice. "I'm sure I'll hear from them soon enough. For now, I'm not
concerned." That was a blatant untruth, but Jonas moved on passed it and
hoped that Doctor Trommashere would do so too.

She nodded carefully. "I just wanted to bring this to your attention. I
don't think we need to take any action as of right now, but as I said, I
wanted you to know...better to be safe than sorry."

Realising that they were finished here, Jonas turned to move away from the
display screen. "I'll have a word with science and see if we can't come up
with something to cut through that interference."

(reply: Trommashere)

As he moved across the sickbay, he come across the entrance to the Captain's
bay. With a resolved smile, he decided to take a look at the mans charts -
certain that the CMO wouldn't mind - and he approached the biobed. Looking
over the data, he could see where the Captain's condition had taken a
plummet the other day, but that under the close care of the CMO since then,
he had made a slow but steady improvement.

"Is there much more we can do for him here?" Jonas called out, over his
shoulder.
