Tom was in his room. He layed down on the bed. His hand was hurting a little

so he started masaging her. ~Where did I get this scar~ thought Tom while
inspecting scar at the bottom side of his left hand.

He gone to bathroom, and washed his scar. It was still open wound although
it wasn't very big. ~I don't need to go to sickbay over that little matter~
thought Tom

Then Tom layed down on a bed again. He opened his terminal and loaded family
data. He started viewing pictures of his parents. They where beautiful. Tom
wanted so much to be with them again. The worts thing is that the last time
that he was with them, was when he was seven and he don't remembers it
completely.

He was confronting his own demons. He first wanted revenge on Maquies for
death over his family, but he changed into more peaceful person. In the end,
he understood that war benefits no one. But now, he must, as the rest of the
crew, fight against his own kind. It wasn't really becose he was fighting
his kind, it was becose of war, the thing he hated as much as one man hate
anything. He was now a member of a crew, and other lives was depending on
his actions. As much as he denied it, Starfleet changed his life, maybe even
saved his life. Now, he felt that he belongs somewhere that someone respects
him and most of all, that he is doing something of a greater good. He looked
at the stars, the picture was beautiful. Another beautiful morning. He
wondered is one of those stars was actualy his parents. ~Just superstitions,
Tom~ Ensign said to himself and shooked his head. He closed his terminal,
gone to the replicator. "Hot Chocolatte, extra sugar." The next second, from
the middle of the replicator was cup of hot chocolatte. He tooked it, and
gone to his chair. He started drinking.

Minute after, the cup holding chocolate was empty. He went to replicator
again and replicated his cup. Then he felt he need a little relaxation.
~Vic or Frank, Tom?~ "Computer, play Tom's personal music files ..... hm,
something from Frank Sinatra" [Beep] was everything Tom heard from computer.
The song started. He closed his eyes and started singing. But suddenly, his
comunicator badge turned on;

=/\= Commander Troi to Ensign Slytherwald, please report to my office as
soon as you can, Troi out. =/\=

"I'm on my way, ma'am!" explained Tom and pressed his comm badge

"Computer, pause song."

Tom pressed the bell. The door chime sounded.

Tom then entered the room. Came to Commander and crossed his hands.

"You wanted to see me, ma'am?"

(USS Nimitz - CSO's office - Lt. Saleke (jg) - 10:19)

Saleke had been looking over potential pilots for the Trawler when the door
chime rang, looking at the time he realized the young ACEO was due and said,
"Come."

Immediately the young man stepped inside the room and said. "Hello sir. You
asked for me?"

The Vulcan said, "Indeed Mr. O'Neill please have a seat and thank you for
your punctuality." as he stood to his feet. Saleke had been impressed
with the young man from the first time he had seen him though he had not had
a chance to speak to him until now. Miles was quiet, focused, intelligent
and hard working; all the things that eventually got a young officer
noticed. The Vulcan was sure that in time those qualities would result in
dividends for the young man. As it as he appeared to be invaluable on what
might prove to be a hard fought spoil, these qualities might very well be
necessary to calm a stressful situation.

The CSO's office was not exactly comfortable for such meetings with only
four pieces of furniture including a three tiered shelf upon which were
Saleke's mineral samples, the desk and the two chairs and the Vulcan made a
note to himself to change the location of such future meetings but it would
do for now.

As the young man sat down Saleke said. "As you can understand Mr. O'Neil
Commander Troi is extremely busy preparing for the attack and asked me to
speak with you about it. Would you like anything before we begin?"

"No, thank you. I'm fine, sir." The young man said in reply to Saleke's
offer. The Vulcan noticed that he looked rather ill at ease, if it was a
matter of confidence he was sure the upcoming mission would give him
something against which to rate himself. Perhaps he would grow more
confident from the experience.

As Saleke sat down he said, "Very well then Mr. O'Neill allow me to go
straight to the heart of the matter, you have been chosen to accompany the
boarding party over to the trawler as you know and will be the ranking
engineering officer aboard until we have docked at Geneva and therefore all
resonsibility for repairs and maintenance of the vessel will of course fall
under you. Have you any personnel in mind yet that you wish to take over?"

(Reply: Miles O'Neill)

"Very good. After you finalize your list forward them to CEO Zzt for his
approval, he will need to adjust his roster accordingly. You did not have
an opportunity as I recall to speak at the meeting. Is there anything you

Saleke sat back and listened as Miles began speaking and was impressed, if

"I do, sir. They're my best engineers, and I know they will be a big help

Saleke nodded his head at the young man's question. "Indeed Mr. O'Neill that
is a concern expressed by the MCO indirectly and the answer lies within your
field of expertise. Force fields are of course screens of energy and energy
can be disrupted if countered properly. I would like for you to use your
knowledge to search for a counter to their efforts. I understand we do not
have much time before we meet the trawler however I am available if you
wish for me to be of help." Saleke crossed his right leg over his left
before continuing.

"Also do not forget that once we have taken the trawler our duty is to make
immediately for the subspace river, we will not have time for resupply from
Nimitz therefore any specialized equipment or supplies you need will have to
be portable and taken over initially."

Saleke remembered the FO's recommendation to reassure the officers about
their objectives.

"Mr. O'Neill it is important to remember the reason we are involved in this
operation. I do not know of your reasonings in this conflict but I was aware
of the abuses and murder wrought by the SFI under Admiral Doenitz. It is
logical to expect that any Federation over which he presides will be
similiarly twisted and without antimatter fuel we will be unable to resist

The door opened before Saleke and he stepped into Medical, noticing that the
activity was unusually muted. The nurses that he saw looked very solemn and
they were keeping to themselves primarily unlike the other times that the
Vulcan had paid a visit to this part of the ship. Inside the door he stopped
to get his bearings, he didn't see the Doctor and had never been to his
office before but it took only a moment to locate it. As he moved toward the
office he was intercepted by one of the nurses.

"Excuse me sir, I am Nurse Eldridge may I help you?" The nurse asked.

Saleke considered the short brunette for an instant before replying. "No
nurse Eldridge I am here to see Doctor Kincaid."

"Is it a private matter sir? If so I am afraid the Doctor is indisposed at
the moment."

Saleke raised an eyebrow in surprise at the nurse's forwardness and said.
"Indeed, would you please tell me why the Doctor is unavailable?"

"Yes sir, " She replied. "Doctor Kirian's baby was delivered premature and
Doctor Kincaid was unable to save it. He is in his office right now taking
it very hard."

Saleke nodded in understanding at her reply as he looked about sickbay,
finally spotting Doctor Kirian lying upon one of the beds apparently
sedated. ~ The loss of a child can have devestating effects upon an
emotional being. ~ "Very well nurse I will get in touch with the Doctor at a
later time." He said as she nodded in approval and walked away. As Saleke
turned for the door he heard sobs from the direction of Doctor Kirian's bunk
and turning his head saw her sitting up with her head in her hands sobbing.
He paused for a moment then began walking toward her not knowing what help
he could be unless she needed someone to talk to, it was well known that
having a listening ear could often be cathartic to someone in emotional
distress. Saleke was well aware he was not a Counselor who is a
professional at consoling people but he refused to allow the young woman to
suffer in isolation. ~ Perhaps one of the nurses will notice. ~ He thought
as he reached her bed. Not wanting to startle the weeping woman he said
softly.

"Doctor Kirian I am Saleke. Is there anything I can do for you?"

The hustle and bustle of the ship's crew brought a little comfort and
stability back to Kinkaid as he walk through the endless corridors on Deck 8
while still thinking about the Trawler mission and the sudden demise of Dr.
Kirien's baby. It was difficult for him to come to a conclusion regardless
if one was still on going while the other ended without resolve.

Kinkaid finally made it to the Counselor's office when he tapped the door
chime.

Kinkaid had not officially met the counselor and had no need to until now.
It was rude of him. As Kinkaid entered the room, he noticed that the

The door chime sounded.

"Come in," Harrison called. He quickly finished what he was doing, and heard
a cough behind him.

"Counselor?" Kinkaid said.

Harrison turned and nodded politely to the doctor. This was the first time
he'd met the doctor formally. Following the previous day's meeting with Dr.
Kirien, he was beginning to think he'd meet all of the crew this way.

"Doctor. What can i do for you?"

"I realized that this is short notice for you, Counselor, but I needed to
talk to you about a recent situation that has made me unresolved." Kinkaid
said with a little hesitation.

"Doctor, what can I do for you?" Harrison said.

After explaining the situation of the recent death of Dr. Kirien's baby with
some hesitation, Kinkaid felt more relax as if a heavy piece of bulkhead has
been lifted from his shoulders. Harrison sat in his seat next to the long
couch and asked Kinkaid, "Please," take a seat, and begin wherever and
whenever you're ready." Kinkaid sat on the couch and began the conversation
about his situation aloud to Harrison.

"Counselor, I know you must think I'm cowl that I can't deal with death in
this manner, but it was new life that did not have a chance." Kinkaid said
as he made a swift turn facing towards Harrison. "I don't. understand!"

Knowing his gestures may have been disturbing to the counselor, but it was
Kinkaid's way of expressing his feelings of emotion. Kinkaid continued in a
less tensions way.

"I've seen through out my life the innocence in far worst conditions that
brings me to their aid. I've treated many seriously injured personnel even
those on the brink of death from injury and illness. I've aided several in
their recovery and survival," Kinkaid said as his mood reverted back to the
emotional unstableness from before, "but why is it so difficult to deal with

"Please," Harrison said, "take a seat, and begin wherever and whenever
you're ready."

Kinkaid sat on the couch and began the conversation about his situation
aloud to Harrison.

"Counselor, I know you must think I'm cowl that I can't deal with death in
this manner, but it was new life that did not have a chance." Kinkaid said
as he made a swift turn facing towards Harrison. "I don't. understand!"

The Doctor was understandably worked up about this. He was turning quite
eratically, in the manner of someone fighting an inner conflict. Harrison
was using this time to let the tragedy of the Doctor's story sink in.

"I've seen throughout my life the innocence in far worst conditions that
brings me to their aid. I've treated many seriously injured personnel even
those on the brink of death from injury and illness. I've aided several in
their recovery and survival," Kinkaid said as his mood reverted back to the
emotional unstableness from before, "but why is it so difficult to deal with
a child's death?"

Harrison listened politely, but inside he was breaking up. There were no
words to describe this tragedy. An unborn life ended before it had even
begun. And he had only just spoken to Dr. Kirien yesterday.

"Can you help me?" Kinkaid asked.

Harrison took a moment to compose himself, but even then his voice was
croaked and heavy. He felt as if his heart was made of lead, pulling down
towards his stomach.

"The loss of life is something all doctors have trouble dealing with
occassionally, particularly in these circumstances. My father is a surgeon
in London, and has been for over thirty years, but even he would be
devastated by some deaths."

He took a moment to take a deep breath, as if that helped.

"The reason this death in particular is causing so much pain is because it
was an child. That is never going to be easy. You're probably feeling what
all doctors feel in this situation; could you have done anything to prevent
this? I am sure that there was nothing that you could have done differently,
but all doctors take it upon themselves. Being a doctor is probably the
hardest job on the ship, rivalling the captain's, because they instinctively
assume responsibility, some of which is not theirs to bear."

Another sigh. He still couldn't believe what had happened to Dr. Kirien.

"The only thing i can suggest is to unleash the frustration, the anger and
the despair inside you. When my father was affected like this, he used to
lock himself in his study for a few hours and yell. He would rant and rave
about what happened, what could have happened, what should have happened.
Eventually, the truth would sink in and he would accept that there was
nothing he could have done. "If I were you," he finished, "I'd take an hour
or two off work, perhaps use some holodeck time, and unleash everything you
have bottled up inside you. If you need an ear to listen to your rantings,
I'm available all afternoon."

Counselor Harrison was in aw in what Kinkaid was going through; the pain of
not being able to save the child's life. Kinkaid felt relieved after
expressing his heartache as a doctor who could have done more to save the
innocent new life. Kinkaid sat with an open mind as Harrison spoke.

"The loss of life is something all doctors have trouble dealing with
occasionally, particularly in these circumstances. My father is a surgeon in
London, and has been for over thirty years, but even he would be devastated
by some deaths."

Kinkaid was aghast by what Harrison was saying and did not want to hear
that. Kinkaid knew that being a doctor and that every patient he was charged
with is going to be under certain pressure to the verge of a breaking point
for survival. Kinkaid held his comments to himself as Harrison continued.

"The reason this death in particular is causing so much pain is because it
was an child. That is never going to be easy. You're probably feeling what
all doctors feel in this situation; could you have done anything to prevent
this? I am sure that there was nothing that you could have done differently,
but all doctors take it upon themselves. Being a doctor is probably the
hardest job on the ship, rivaling the captain's, because they instinctively
assume responsibility, some of which is not theirs to bear."

All of this time Kinkaid thought he was the only one on the ship who thought
as Harrison did. On a sub-conscious level, Kinkaid knew the counselor was
starting to make logical sense. With this newfound occupational compassion,
Kinkaid allowed the counselor to continue without further interruption of
his facial expressions.

"The only thing I can suggest is to unleash the frustration, the anger and
the despair inside you. When my father was affected like this, he used to
lock himself in his study for a few hours and yell. He would rant and rave

"I'd take an hour or two off work, perhaps use some holodeck time, and
unleash everything you have bottled up inside you. If you need an ear to
listen to your ranting, I'm available all afternoon."

Kinkaid's new lease on life started to take form when he spoke in appraise
on the advice from Harrison. "Counselor, I do not know what to say only that
you are right to say that I need a few hours off from the job to myself.
Being ship's chief practitioner does catch up with me." Kinkaid said as he
stood up with an outstretched arm and proceeded to Harrison to shake his
hand in solitude thanks for dealing with his unique situation.

Kinkaid had a way of make new friends in outlandish predicaments when he
said. "Counselor, since you helped me out. I like to return the favor by
offering you a drink in Ten Forward. Time away from the job, eh! How does
that sound?"

With that said and done, Kinkaid was off to see the FO about his medical
reports and the mission with the Trawler.

The doctor stood up and shook Harrison by the hand.

"Counselor, since you helped me out. I like to return the favor by offering

Harrison allowed a grin to surface, as the tension of this successful
session receded. There had been a time when he had expected the doctor to
burst out in anger, claiming that Harrison knew nothing. That would have
been an understandable reaction.

"That sounds great," he said, "I wouldn't mind getting out of this office
for a while, either. Does nineteen hundred hours sound good to you?"

She seemed to be having difficulty speaking. Clearly this was a very
personal, emotional subject.

"I don't think you have had a chance to review my file, otherwise you
wouldn't be asking me that." She said, making an attempt at a lame joke.
"Where would you like me to start?" She thought for a second. "At the
beginning would be the best place to start."

She leaned back and got comfortable. "When I was 22 I attended a medical
conference on Risa. While I was there, I met a starfleet officer who had
just graduated from the Academy and was out for a bit of Holiday. We enjoyed
several days together, never giving each other any details other than our
first name. When we parted, I slipped my contact information into his
luggage. I never heard from him again."

The counsellor listened thoughtfully to Dr. Kirien's tale. He couldn't
believe how much had happened to this woman. He automatically started trying
to understand more about John Wilson, trying to put himself in the man's
shoes in order to understand what was going on with him.

Michaella held her head in her hands, trying very hard not to start crying
again. "I need him, and he hates me and I do not know why he does."

Harrison took a moment to let her calm down, while thinking of what he could
say.

"It seems to me that Lt. Wilson does not feel the same about the bond
between you as you do. I wouldn't like to venture a guess at why this is,
but i can certainly assure you that it is highly unlikely that he hates you.
It may be that he focuses on his career, it may be that he feels he is
unprepared for a commitment...i don't know, I'm afraid, and I'd rather not
guess."

(reply Kirien)

Harrison thought for a while. "I might be able to get a better idea if I was
to meet with him. However, to do that, I may have to explain that you have
come to see me. I may not have to, but would I have your consent for this?"

over to her to give her a hug. One that she would give to her friends but
it seemed that Onyx was preoccupied with other things, Kestra stepped back
to look at her.

"Problem?" She asked a bit worried

"I got my head burried inside the mission since this morning and now that I
have finish work to defeat the Defiant I had a though... actually, it was
Lt. Commander Wilson idea, he gave it to me. What if we run a few
simulation with the Trawler, give everyone a tour of it, make them familiar
with it?" Onyx paused. "Sorry, When I'm tired I get all that way."

Turning away from her and Kestra headed for the couch, "Come sit and lets
talk".

"That would be nice!" Onyx smiled. "I see that you got settled again...
Did Richard came already? I know that he is pretty busy at the moment."

After they both were sitting Kestra listened to what Onyx was saying. "No,
Richard has not been by here yet. The Captain has been the only visitor
until you." Kestra chuckled a bit, "at least you see it after I have done a
little unpacking, the Captain was not so luckly."

Kestra could feel that there was something that Onyx wanted to talk about
but seemed a bit hesitant to do so. She knew that it probably had something
to do with the reaction that she had to Onyx's proposal during the meeting.
"Ok, I take it that my reaction this morning was not exactly what you had
expected from me."

"Not totally, true that the trawler mission is important but I just couldn't
forget about the Defiant guarding it."

Kestra looked down at her hands, sighing she looked back at Onyx. "I have
never forgot the Defiant, Onyx. It is something you have to learn, is that
sometimes you have to put aside what you think that should be focused on.
When you are in a meeting to discuss something that is what should be
discussed and only that. There is time to discuss the beforehand but then
was not the time. I had to be hard on you and the rest as a matter of
command and we needed to come up with a plan after we get aboard." Kestra
looked hard into Onyx's eyes and smiled, "but now is a different time, what
do you have for me?"

"The Trawler, I have deck plans, simulation can be run for the teams to get
familiar with the ground. The crew of the Trawler knows every corridors and
where they leads. One wrong turn from us and we end up in a dead end. I
thought that running a few simulations in a combat situation it would do a
great good and give some experience."

Kestra thought for a minute about what Onyx had said and for once someone
had actually come up with something that was useful to the away team. She
had actually been thinking of the exact same thing but she was not about to
say that to Onyx. "I think now we have something to do and it gives us a
better chance of success of survival. This is what I was looking for. Get
with Ensign O'Neill from engineering to help you program the holodeck. Bring
Lt. Saleke in on this for anything that he might be able to input from the
science department." Kestra thought for a moment before continuing, "feel
free to bring any department in on this. I also want everyone to know that
we will have a run on this in the morning at 0800 unless you cant have it
ready by then." Kestra stopped with a questioning look on her face at Onyx.

"I already put in the trawler deck plans and it's system parameter and
security or at least what I could and would have though of in the computer
on holodeck 5. Now it's you who have a question look on your face!" She gave
Kestra a corner smile.

"Always the efficient one aren't you my dear. Inform the team and I want
Ensign Slytherwald there. I also want you there to ensure that he performs
to your expectations and to make sure the program works as you wanted it.
You can also make adjustments as we go through it if necessary." Getting up
she extended her hand to Onyx, "after you finish come back tonight and we
will eat and talk without mentioning work."

"That would be nice not to talk of work... I will need a vacation after
this. I will contact everyone and get to work." She took Kestra's hand.
"So, I will see you later." Onyx got up. "May I use the replicator!"

"Yes you know you may" Kestra replied watching her as she walked over to it.
"I hope soon we all will be able to take a vacation." Kestra thought of her
children back on Betazed.

"Computer, I would like the biggest, strongest, raktajino you can wip up.
Ok... I'm gone now." Onyx gave Kestra a smile and walk toward the door.

After Onyx got what she wanted from the replicator, she started for the
door. Kestra walked with her and at the door, "Onyx you did really good
tonight and I thank you."

Onyx came back to the holodeck and look at the plain walls. "Computer
program Onyx 2... the Trawler." She sip a little of her raktajino. After a
moment, she tap her combadge. "Lt. Saleke, Ensign O'Neill, I have an idea,
what if we run a few simulation for the trawler away teams. An exercise to
give them an idea of the lay out. Comdr Troi gave her ok and think it's a
good idea."

"I am on holodeck 5, working on the trawler holo-program. If you feel that
we could use the help of anyone to better prepare everyone... call them up."

"I will be waiting... Onyx out!"

"I'll be there with my engineers ASAP." Miles said. ~That's a good idea.~ He
thought.

"Affirmative. O'Neill out." Miles said as he tapped his commbadge, "O'Neill
to Carter, Barkley, Johnson, and Daniels, report to Holodeck 5." =/\=Aye,
sir.=/\= They replied. Miles then made his way to Holodeck 5.

Miles entered the room to find Kateb and Saleke already there. "Hello." He
said. He heard the doors open again, and looked to see his engineers
entering the holodeck. "Well, it looks like we're all here, should we start
now?"
