(USS Nimitz - Captain's Quarters - CO- CaptainDevan Sash -19:33)

"Sir...I...I apologise for my timing..."

Sash was fighting back a chuckle himself, "No need to apologize, Ensign,
your timing was ... classic. What can I do for you."

"I'm very proud to be here, sir. I look forward to the honour of serving
under you. What exactly will my duties be aboard the Nimitz?"

"Well Ensign," Sash smiled, "it would probably help if you gave me your
orders, and then I could better direct you."

Harrison shook his head and hurriedly handed Sash the PADD with his transfer
orders. Sash took a moment to read over them. He hummed a little and then
nodded. Then an even bigger smile grew.

"So you're the new counselor," he looked over at Nessa, who appeared to be
choking back a laugh. "Well, counselor, some might say that your timing is
impeccable."

He turned to Nessa and gestured to her. "Let me introduce you to Commander
Winters. She is my First Officer."

"He's our Counsellor!" Vanyssa said with delight, chiming in from the couch.
"I thought your name seemed vaguely familiar." She got up from the couch and
limped over. "Ensign, I'm Commander Winters, the First Officer." Her ankle
chose that moment to buckle and she fell, hoping that one of the two
gentleman would catch her. "Owwwwww."

Sash and Harrison rushed to Nessa's side as she fell. Sash managed to catch
her before she got all the way to the floor and pulled her up. He supported
her weight and pulled her in closer. The sudden contact was like an electric
charge. He swept her off her feet and placed her back on the sofa.

"You stay there," he said, in a patronly tone. She just nodded.

(Harrison)

"Have you gotten settled into your quarters yet?" Sash inquired.

(reply Harrison)

"Then I suggest you do that. It's to late in the evening to start work. Come
and see me tomorrow and we'll get you started."

"No, sir, not yet," he replied. ~Shoot! Wonder where my bag is?~

"Then I suggest you do that. It's to late in the evening to start work. Come
and see me tomorrow and we'll get you started."

"Thank you, sir."

He saluted once more, turned and saluted to Commander Williams, then turned
and walked smartly out into the corridor.

He wandered down the corridor a little way until he came to a map of the
ship. ~Alright, let's try out this fancy computer system~ "Computer, where
are Ensign Harrison's quarters?" he asked, pressing the relevant button and
feeling relatively stupid. The computer told him and he walked off.

He strolled in to find his bag was already on his bed. He smiled at the
surprisingly big room. It wasn't huge, but it was bigger than he expected.
It was very nice, very cosy, and best of all it had a porthole, through
which he could see the people of Starbase Geneva going about their business.

He unpacked his bag, chose a good book, and relaxed in his new home.

Sash lay in bed. This had been one of the strangest days he'd had in a long
time. He wondered what could possibly top it.

=^=Lee to Captain Sash, got a few minutes? I've got a few important Marine
things to talk to you about.=^=

Sash shook his head. He should have known better. Sitting up he tapped his
comm badge beside his bed. He knew this had to be something good, this late
at night. "Then you'd better come and see me Lt."

=^=On my way.=^=

Sash got up and found some comfortable clothes to put on. It wouldn't do to
meet the MCO in his skivies. He got dressed and had the replicator make a
pot of coffee. He put the coffee on the coffee table, poured himself a cup
and waited for Lee to arrive.

Rich pushed the buzzer, and stepped inside when allowed. The Captain, such
as he was, looked exceptionally tired. The smell of coffee filled the room,
leaving Rich's mouth dry and forcing his stomach to do slow turns as he
considered the sight he had just beheld. He was still fingering his side-arm
in a twitchy manner. Death was no stranger to him, he had seen plenty, but
rarely did he ever see someone summarily executed..

~Assuming he executed him. I don't know that.~

HE came to loose attention before the CO could say anything. "Sir, in a
roundabout way, I think I'm supposed to be telling you to go find Zach
Falthgood and talk to him. He..." he paused for a moment, "Sir, he has a
dead body tied up in some quarters. He had a few extra things with him, and
he looked.. Haunted... In a way. He left the quarters right after me, said
he would be at his own place. It apparently was important. He also wants me
to get in contact with Security, he says he is being watched and any use of
the Comm, especially from the quarters of Lieutenant Vadhagh, would be
traced."

Lee fell silent, he didn't know anything concrete, he had come into this
blind not fifteen minutes ago and was confused as hell. He waited for Sash,
his mind's eye kept returning to the body though.

Day 2

Stardate: 2406.06.21

(USS Nimitz - Deck 3, Saleke's quarters - Ensign Saleke - 06:30 )

Saleke tapped his combadge after his morning routine was finished.

=^= Doctor Kincaid, this is Saleke the new CSO. I would like to speak with
you about a recent event if you would have some time this evening. =^=

(Reply: CMO Kincaid)

=^= Thank you Doctor, would 18:30 be agreeable? =^=

(Reply: CMO Kincaid)

=^= Very good I will see you then. Goodbye Doctor Kincaid, Saleke out =^=

Stardate: 2406.06.21

(USS NIMITZ - Officer's quarters - NPC Ensign John Carlton - 0640)

John Davis Carlton III was lying upon his bunk trying to ignore the aching
in his legs as he considered whether to get up now or put the matter off as
long as possible when the combadge he had placed on the ledge beside the bed
began to beep, groaning he rolled over to his left and tapped the unit.
"Carlton here "

=^= Ensign Carlton this is Saleke, I assumed CSO duties last evening and
have some questions over a report you filed. Would you meet me in my office
at 07:30? =^=

He glanced at his chronometer and grimaced. "I'll be there Mr. Saleke though
I won't have bells on."

=^= Why would you under any circumstances be wearing bells Mr. Carlton? =^=

" Just an expression sir, I'll meet you then."

=^= Very good, Saleke out. =^=

~ I knew it was a mistake to take that bet when I did it but how often do
you get to go head to head against Lance Armstrong in a time trial? ~ He
thought of the race in Holosuite 2 the evening before and grinned at how
close he had come. ~ If not for that loose gravel I could have taken him,
well that and about twenty meters but I still had a good ride. ~ He levered
himself to the edge of the bunk and got up stiffly then shuffled to the
lavaratory to begin his preparations.

Stardate: 2406.06.21

(USS NIMITZ - Deck 6, CSO's office - Ensign Saleke - 07:30)

Saleke stood up as the chime sounded and said, "Come."

The door opened to reveal a young man of about twenty seven years of age
with light brown hair and hazel eyes, he stood 5'11" and looked to be very
athletic though he was walking somewhat stiffly.

"Ensign Carlton reporting in sir."

"Thank you Mr. Carlton, please take a seat."

"Thank you but if it's all the same to you sir I'd rather stand."

As Saleke sat down he glanced at the fellow who was in obvious discomfort.
"You should see Dr. Kincaid for your legs, a muscular stimulation unit
should work out the stiffness."

"I know Mr. Saleke, I was already by sickbay but the Doc was awfully busy
this morning and I didn't have time to wait."

"Take as much time as you need after this meeting."

"Thank you sir, I will."

Saleke leaned back and returned the man's look levelly.

"I will be direct with you Mr. Carlton, I found your report dated 2406.06.08
on Subspace/Temporal rifts to be incomplete, the Magnetron Polarity and
Sub-particulate emissions scans were missing. Do you have an explanation?"

"Yes sir," John replied uncomfortably as he wondered why the Vulcan was
questioning him on two such peripheral scans. "Standard operating procedure
does not call for those scans sir and with all that was going on there was
no time to make unnecessary readings."

"Mr. Carlton any scans that bring in pertinent information should not be
classified as unnecessary. From this day forward standard operating
procedure in this department is to make time for any scans that might bring
in any information regardless of one's interpretation of whether such
information is pertinent or not. Is that clear?"

"Yes sir," John said through narrowed eyelids.

"The facts are Mr. Carlton that tests run by Chan Kenishi showed that the
Anomaly made significant changes in the subatomic structure of matter
contained within its environs, thus the readings that were not done would
have showed us the vehicle by which those changes were made. The purpose of
this department is to give the Captain of this vessel all information that
he needs to make an informed and accurate decision and it is up to me to
decide what accumulated information should or should not be brought to his
attention."

"I see." Ensign Carlton stated flatly.

"I understand that could not have been forseen but I trust it will not
happen again."

"No sir it will not." Said the scientist.

"Very well you are dismissed Mr. Carlton."

As the door shut behind the young scientist he looked back at the office. ~
I saw that lone pip on his collar, an ensign playing at being a CSO. I can't
wait to watch him fall on his face. ~ As he walked away his frown turned
into a smile.

Saleke meanwhile had returned to his reports until 8:00 when he would meet
with the Geologist.

(USS Nimitz - Deck 6, Labs - Ensign Saleke and NPC Geologist Chan Kenishi -
0800)

The door opened before Saleke and he walked into the Geology lab. The sample
cabinet was against the far wall and extended from floor to ceiling and it
was accessed by a small control set upon a panel before it. The sampling
equipment including a sonic coring tool, an isotope decay chamber, a mass
spectrometer and magnetic reasonance imaging chamber were set neatly in the
center of the room and took most of the available working space. The desk
complete with computer that would control the testing equipment was to the
right in the near corner and had several mineral samples set upon it
including a red spectice crystal, dolomite and an ore high in iron.

The geologist was sitting at his desk as the Vulcan entered and smiled to
see the new CSO in his lab.

"Good morning Mr. Saleke."

"Good morning Mr. Kenishi, may I see the sample we were discussing
yesterday."

~ My he is all business. ~ Thought Chan as he nodded his head, got up from
the desk and walked toward the sample cabinet. As he punched in the code
Chan sensed the Vulcan move in beside him, the door of the cabinet slid
smoothly upward exposing the mineral samples it contained. Waiting for it to
clear the Asian then reached in and took out the fist sized meteorite sample
and turning, handed it to Saleke.

Saleke took the sample and looked at it closely. ~ This piece of material of
meteoritic origin could contain much information on a heretofore little
understood phenomenon that through some quirk of design or fate might be
ready to give up its secrets.~

" Thank you Mr. Kenishi I will take this sample to the High Energy Physics
Lab and run some more exhaustive tests on it. You did say you had two more
samples did you not?"

"Yes sir, there are two more samples of the same composition that are
showing the same levels of Neutrino saturation, they are right here." Chan
pointed to two smaller samples in a nearby tray.

"Very good, I will patch the computers together from the bridge so that you
may see the results Mr. Kenishi."

"Thank you sir, that will be a delight to watch." Chan's eyes shone as the
CSO walked out of the lab.

Stardate: 2406.06.21

(USS Nimitz - Deck 6, High Energy Biophysics Lab - Ensign Saleke and NPC
Scientist John Carlton - 08:10)

The lab hummed with power as Saleke stepped inside, the lab itself was
larger than the previous one and was filled with sensitive instruments
designed to break down energy readings, map them and then also possibly
reconstruct them for further study. The Superconducting equipment was
compact and well placed and the result was a more accomodating lab to
visitors. Saleke saw John Carlton and walked toward him, the man spotted him
and frowned but walked to meet him.

"Yes Mr. Saleke, what can I do for you?"

"I have the sample of which I spoke this morning Mr. Carlton. I would like
for you to place it in one of the testing chambers and do full spectrum
energy absorption and reaction readings on it. I intend to mate the control
computer for the test chamber with the one from Mr. Kenishi's lab from the
bridge and will study the readings from there.

Ensign Carlton took the sample and carried it to a sealed chamber with a
door large enough for a man to walk comfortably through and set it beneath a
high energy output array, after walking outside he sealed the chamber then
activated the array from the computer monitor. After he had done his work
Saleke stepped forward and entered the commands that would mate it with the
computer monitor on the bridge, a throbbing hum came from the chamber as the
array powered up. Making sure the forcefield was also active Saleke stepped
back from the controls and nodded at the young scientist.

"Thank you Mr. Carlton, I realize I was hard on you this morning but you
will also find I recognize exceptional work as well. I hope we will have no
more such meetings in the future."

John Carlton nodded and looked at the CSO with a little of the same humor he
had had when he walked into the office this morning. "Understood Mr. Saleke.
By the way isn't hope an emotional response?"

Saleke merely looked at the ensign for a moment with an elevated eyebrow
before turning and walking unhurridly from the room then made his way to the
bridge. Carlton looking after him said. "Gotcha." under his breath with a
grin.

(USS Nimitz - Sickbay - CMO - Ensign (sg) BigWill Kinkaid - 0840)

Kinkaid gave most to all of his medical staff including Nurse Janet Sanders
a few hours off to deal with personal matters and get refresh from a hectic
week except for Kinkaid, himself. He still had a few reports to finish, log,
and tend to Hakeswell. Janet told Kinkaid earlier before leaving sickbay
that she was going to prepare for him a more peaceful eloquent breakfast in
her quarters instead of going to Ten Forward. Kinkaid felt most honored by
Janet's generous gesture and agreed to the idea after he completed
Hakeswell's medical report.

~ It was times like this that brings a man in my position to drink. ~
Kinkaid thought as he finished up the medical status report on Petty Officer
Hakeswell. His shattered rib bone was slowly mending back together. Kinkaid
wished that there was something else he could do, but only time will do for
now. The sedative Kinkaid administered to Hakeswell still had a few potent
hours left to go before there are signs of awareness from the patient.

Kinkaid filed his reports and made a final check to make sure everything was
alright with Hakeswell and then left sickbay heading for Nurse Janet
Sanders' quarters for breakfast. Kinkaid's stomach was grumbling and
growling at the same time. Kinkaid rushed to the turbolift before something
else on his persons goes for the worst.

(USS Nimitz - Entering Sickbay - CMO - Ensign (sg) BigWill Kinkaid - 0904)

The breakfast meal with Janet Sanders was delicious, but short. Kinkaid did
not mean to cut their engagement short but sickbay needed him. He needed
sickbay. Kinkaid could not stand being away from sickbay for a long period
of time unless it was on an away mission or on leave back home on Earth. As
Kinkaid entered sickbay, he could sense something was wrong, but could not
put his finger on it.

Knowing sickbay like the back of his hand, Kinkaid did not see anything out
of the ordinary to raise any alert flags. All of the medical equipment and
test sample hyposprays were in their appropriate spaces along with the
medical tricorders and instruments of surgery seemed to be in their rightful
places.

Kinkaid thought that to put his mind at ease he should check the biobed
area. As he walked over to the section, the adrenaline rush of knowing
something bad had occurred was coming into full swing. Kinkaid noticed that
Hakeswell's persons seemed to be in awkward position. Kinkaid moved in for a
closer examination and found that the body was flipped over onto the stomach
frontal area.

Kinkaid retrieved his medical tricorder and began scanning for Hakeswell's
vitals. The scans showed no live signs. With the activation of the biobed
scanners, Kinkaid checked Hakeswell's pulse and breathing manually. There
was no pulse or breathing. Kinkaid was starting to lose his mind. Kinkaid
step back from the biobed to take a deep breathe to calm his nerves.

Without any hesitation, Kinkaid immediately contacted Captain Sash.

"Kinkaid to Capt. Sash."

(Reply CO, Sash)

"Sir, I think you better come down here!" Kinkaid said trying not to lose
his cool.

(Reply CO, Sash)

Kinkaid was just trying to keep the knowledge of what has happen in sickbay
down to only to those who needs to know. The captain was the only that
needed to know right a way. Kinkaid was not in no way being rude or
insubordinate when he replied. " I need your presence alone, Sir!"

Kincaid sounded a little stressed. Sash sat up a little straighter as he
talked.

"Is there a problem. Should I send security?"

=^= I need your presence alone, Sir! =^=

It was the alone part that really got the captain's attention. He was out of
his seat and half way across the bridge before he replied.

Sash was running down the corridor. As he approached sickbay he slowed his
gait to a quick walk. He entered the room to see the docot looking very
worried. As he stepped up to the CMO he noticed that they were not alone.
There was someone on a biobed. Sash had also seen enough dead bodies in his
time to realize that this man was one more.

He turned his gaze back to Kincaid. "What happened here? And who is that
man?"

(USS Nimitz - Sickbay - CO - Captain Devan Sash- 0913)

"Captain, this is...I mean... this was Petty Officer Hakeswell. According to
the ship's manifest, Hakeswell was assigned to the Engineering section."
Kinkaid turned and looked at Sash with deep concern in his eyes as the Chief
Medical Officer and continued on.

Sash's concern was as much that he really didn't recognize the man. He had
seen the name on the ships roster, but he had managed to escape actually
meeting his captain. "And how did manage to be in sickbay?"

"Hakeswell's persons... I mean...body was sedated, sir, due to a shattered
rib bone and would have been unable to move on his own with the makeshift
brace attached to his side to re-generate the bone that was shattered. When
I found him a few moments ago, his body was turned in this current position,
which caused the regenerated rib bone to puncture his lung and cause severe
hemorrhaging of the main artery to the heart resulting in his drowning in
his own blood. Sir, whatever transpired here Hakeswell did not see or feel
anything that happened to him."

"Well I'm sure that will be a great relief to the crewman," Sash shot out
sarcastically. He looked at the PADD the doctor had handed him. He was no
doctor, but he did have some extensive emergency medical experience during
the wars. Even he could see that there was no way that Hakeswell could have
turned over on his own. This was a deliberate act. hakeswell was murdered.
~Great, that's all I need.~

He could tell that the doctor was quite uncomfortable with the situation. He
stammered his way through the explainations, but he seemed to be holding
something back. There was more to this.

"Doctor, how did Hakeswell break his rib," Sash became more insistant. "Why
was he here in the first place."

He folded his arms looking from the dead body to the doctor, waiting for an
adequate response.

(USS Nimitz - Main Bridge - CO - Captain Devan Sash- 1315)

The tour of the bridge was winding down and there was reallyonly one place
left to see. He turned to the central command area and took a step towards
it.

"Can anyone tell me who sits in these seats?" he asked.

One of the children said, "The Command Staff. The Captain, The FO and the
Counsellor."

"That's right," he smiled. "Have any of you have ever thought about being in
Starfleet, and perhaps being a Captain?"

Several of them nodded, a little self-conscious. Jennah, who had lived on a
starship her entire life, being one of them. Starfleet was her life, and she
had seen both the good and the bad.

"Not everyone is cut out to be a leader, though." The Klingon boy said.

"True, true," Sash replied, "but the great thing aboaut Starfleet is that it
gives everyone the opportunity to try. Although some people are not destined
to be in command, there is a place in Starfleet for almost everyone. And
sometimes, those who didn't realize that they could, find themselves in the
position of command."

He looked out to see the Klingon boy nodding his approval of his words. The
others seemed to be looking at the chair with a mix of awe and wonder. Sash
smiled at them.

"Would anyone like to see if they would fit in the big chair?"

Jennah wiggled back to the back and stayed firmly there. The Klingon boy
walked up and took the seat, then a few others tried. Jennah, finally
working up the courage, took the seat and looked up at the very tall Sash.
Vanyssa was watching her daughter in interest.

Jennah giggled and wiggled in the chair. "It is very very comfortable!" She
said, a bit startled.

Sash chuckled. "Well, I don't get to sit in it too often these days, but
when I do, I like to be comfy. You know Jennah," Sash looked at her with
surprise, "you look like you belong in that chair."

"I do??" Jennah asked, surprised. Her mouth formed an 'o' and she hopped up
and ran behind Katie to some chuckling of the bridge crew. "I'm not big
enough yet. Or wise enough." The muffled voice could be heard.

Sash smiled at her and knelt down. "Come here you. Not yet. But one day you
will be. And that's a day I'd like to see."

Jennah nodded, feeling a little sad. She took her favorite Captain's hand
and came out of hiding. "Did you mean that ?" She asked. It was her
strongest ambition to serve in Starfleet like her parents, both her real
ones and Vanyssa and David did. She was suddenly not conscious of the other
people around her, just Captain Devan, who was there, and who had been so
nice to her through out all of this. She remembered how he had fought to
find her, and crawled thru the jeffries tubes until he did. He was a good
guy, and she cared about him a great deal. Privately she thought he might be
as cool as David and Lee were, but that was a pretty far fetched thought.

Sash held her hands in one of his and cupped her chin with the other. "If
there's one thing you can be certain of," Sash said seriously, "I never say
anything if I don't mean it."

Then he stood up and looked at the children around him. "Well my friends, I
would say that concludes your tour of the bridge. Do you have any more
questions?"

The children around him all shook there heads no, and Katie stepped forward.
"Thank you, Captain. It's been most educational." She said, a twinkle in her
eye.

With a smile and a wink he nodded at the teacher. "Ms. Troi, it was my
pleasure. You have some terrific students and perhaps well see them again
some day."
