Mission: Soliloquy
Day: 9
Stardate: 2446.07.13
(USS Illuminar – Deck 2 – Officer’s mess – Ensign Torek, Operations, Pilot
Ensign Pihi ‘Kestral’ Piripi, Bridge Relief Supervisor Lt. Tavay – 1810)
“Well, I am all yours. Lt. Bobh I hear is interesting to work with but I
have not had the pleasure. I have mostly been working as a bridge standby
officer, so I do not often work in one department. My stint as an
operations officer during the refit was the longest I have had at any
station.”
“Indeed Ma’am. I find it odd to be seconded to him, but if that is where
the ship needs me. I need to learn the details of the department. I’m not
sure who is in charge at the moment, that was left out of the briefing
material,” Torek said.
Shaw chuckled, “We tend to be more a rag-tag bunch in Operations. Everyone
depends on us, but no one seems to want us,” he said. “The last Chief of
Operations, rumor has it, disappeared under suspicious circumstances, so
who knows what Palace intrigue there is.”
Torek looked at the man and frowned. He paused to consider his words when
Tavay spoke again.
“Mr. Shaw, do you want to join us?” she asked.
James chuckled, “Thanks for the invite roomie,” he said with a smile, “The
lads and I have a date in the Rec Room. A poker tournament tonight. And I
feel lucky,” he added as he stood up. “Got to get my lucky hat, so have
fun Torek, I’m sure we’ll see a lot of each other.”
Turning to Tavay, “I still have that bottle I picked up to celebrate your
promotion, if you’re not too important to be seen socializing with the
lower decks.”
As Shaw was walking out, he bumped into a short woman walking into the
mess. “Excuse me Miss,” he said expectantly.
“Watch where you’re going,” Piri said in an annoyed tone.
“Let me make it up to you, can I buy you a drink?” he asked.
The pilot paused, and looked the man over, “Why? What have you heard?” she
asked.
James shrugged, “Nothing at all, just trying to be polite, that’s all.”
"I don’t even know your name,” she said looking at the man.
“Shaw, James Shaw,” he said with a smile. “I’m a damage control officer.”
“Pihi Piripi,” she replied, “but most people call me Kestral. I am a pilot
and helmswoman.”
Tavay saw what was going on with Shaw, “Looks like Mr. Shaw has made a new
friend.”
Torek frowned, “It seems he has.”
“I believe she is a new pilot. She joined the crew while I was in the
Illuminar for the refit. Perhaps we should ask her to join. Maybe working
with her on the bridge a lot”
“I met her in the first officer's office earlier today. It might be good
for her to know more of the ship, Ma’am.” Torek said.
Tavay looked at Piripi, “Ensign Piripi, please come and join us.”
The pilot looked over, “Sorry James. Perhaps another time. The Lieutenant
is calling,” the woman said as she moved over to where Tavay and Torek were
waiting.
“Ensign, I am Tavay. A pleasure to meet you.” Tavay started. She then
continued to introduce herself, “I am the one that sends out the
replacement officers when someone has to leave during their shift.”
“Hello Lieutenant Tavay,” the woman said. “It seems we will be seeing more
of each other as I am on the helm.”
Tavay smiled, “Welcome aboard. This is indeed an interesting ship.” Tavay
said. “So any interests? Crochet, Ballroom dancing, murder?” Tavay hoped
the banter would break the ice.
“Murder is interesting,” she replied. “But practically, I am an outdoors
woman, and flying.”
“Not too much of the outdoors when you are on a starship. Glad you like to
fly. We could use more people like you. People who enjoy what they do.”
“I do enjoy Anbo-jyutsu as well. Nothing like pummling a blind opponent
with a stick,” she said with a smile.
“Sparing is a good way to keep your body agile and your wits sharper than
Gorn teeth,” Tavay commented. She drank the last of her beverage and was
quite full for the moment. “Mr. Terek and I are about to take a tour of
the ship. Would you like to join us?”
“That would be useful,” Pihi replied. “I have only seen a few parts of the
ship.”
