Mission: The Ring of the Rephaim

Day: 1

Stardate: 2446.08.31

(USS Illuminar – Deck 6 – Science Lab 5 – Dr. Teller – 1200)

The computer started beeping again. The Tamarian, dressed in his tattered
robe and Hawaiian shirt opened one eye. He lifted his head from the desk
and stared at the screen.

Lines of text began scrolling up the screen, in a slow crawl. He hit pause
and walked over to the back bench. Checking on their fermentation system,
he smiled. He did wonder if they could brew 307 ale, as the legend goes, a
drink made on Earth, at MIT, when some crazy students used a cyclotron to
fold space and brew the wicked drink.

Meanwhile, he took out a few bottles and mixed up two glasses of a Martian
sunrise. A new cocktail and his scientific research partner, the esteemed
doctor Gaillus Penn had discovered when they were participating in the
annual Strategema championships on Mars. Penn had placed 2 while Teller
finished in 5th place. He had gotten distracted by his opponent’s good
looks and drowned his loss at the bar.

He placed a drink by his friend and sat back at his station. Sipping the
drink, he began to read the message in more detail. On a separate PADD, he
started making notes. It seemed M’Grarr, the Caitian scientist had recently
published a paper with a unique solution to the Cosmic Stream Central
Hypothesis by Aed Nightfluff and Siassia Pouhl. If it was true, it would
help advance a side project that he was working on to address the limits of
quantum warp fields.

He paused and scrolled back up. He had forgotten what day it was. He
looked at the screen again and read the names. M’Grarr’s paper forgotten he
stood up excitedly and called to his friend. “Darla to Nemo. Auntie Em to
Dorothy. Mushu to Mulan,” he called excitedly. He watched as his friend
started to stir. “Roget of Altair, McCoy of the Enterprise. Crusher of the
Enterprise.”

(reply Gaillus Penn)
