(Starbase Freedom - Level 11 - Medical Plaza - CO - Captain Casian Dahr and Dr. Roxanne Dahr, and CMO Dr. Mark Edwards -1030)

Casian had given Roxanne a small tour of the Medical Plaza. There was more to see there than the hospital. He especially enjoyed showing her the arboritum. Much of the work done in there had been his. You can take the Trill off the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the Trill.

As they entered the hospital he led her over to the emergency admissions. Dahr recognized Edwards standing in front of the desk and led his wife to him.

Mark looked up from the PADD that he was looking at Casian and Roxanne entered through the doors. He smiled politely and headed over towards them.

“Good morning captain….” He looked from Casian to Roxanne “. Ma’am how can I help you both today?”

“Morning.” Roxanne said. “Dr. Edwards, I presume.” Roxy held out her hand, “I am Dr. Roxanne Dahr.” She smiled.

“Yes, Dr. Dahr, I am the Chief of this massive medical complex and senior surgeon on staff, at the moment anyway…What brings you both to my neck of the woods both okay I hope?”

Roxy looked over at Casian and then back to Mark. “I am the new Pediatric Surgeon.”

“I just wanted to bring her around so the two of you could meet, before she started working.”

Mark paused for a moment as he took in what has been said. He then smiled and held out his hands. “Well. Welcome to the Medical department Dr. Dahr. I am sure that the Pediatrics will be very glad to have you.”

“Thank you.” Roxy said, “I am eager to find out all the responsibilities you have for me under your command.”

He nodded. “Well you are the new Pediatric Surgeon. You are also the Senior Pediatric Surgeon of the pediatric department. Congratulations.” He gave a slight smile.

Dahr had made a career of recognizing and rectifying high tension meetings. This one seemed no less dangerous. He was uncertain of the cause of it, but had a thought.

“So, Dr. Edwards,” he said, “perhaps a short tour of the pediatrics unit might be in order. A brief introduction to the staff on duty and such. Unless you’re busy. We can always make our own way. But I figured the two of you might like to get to know one another.”

“Of course, Captain.” He handed his PADD over to a passing nurse. “Nurse Richards. Please give this to Dr. Rightguard and tell her to begin and I will be there to help her with the complicated bit if she needs me.”

“Yes Doctor.”

He turned back. “Please if you would both follow me. Pediatrics is this way.”

“Are you sure you have time? Sounds like you have a procedure you need to get to..” Roxy said.

“Ow not at all. Dr Rightguard is more than capable of doing that procedure. She just needs to come to the conclusion that she thinks that she is capable of doing it as well.”

“Sometimes, I guess you have to let them fly solo.” Roxy was not sure what the procedure was but if he was comfortable with leaving, then that was his call.

He began to usher them towards the corridor leading them towards the Pediatric departments.

“Captain, Dr Dahr, the medical department is a large and wide range department. We cover everything including a fully functional medical facility ground side and a few things specifically dealing with working on a starbase.”

“This is an improvement from where I came from. This place looks well equipped.” Roxy observed.

Casian knew Roxy was being kind. She had put together the best pediatric center on the planet. But it had not started that way. However, here she was going to start in a much better position than when she started at the Capital Medical Center. He also saw an opportunity to address the items that had been presented to him earlier.

“Doctor,” he began, “if you don’t mind me asking, how are you set for a counseling and family therapy department and general dentistry?”

Mark paused for a moment before starting. “Well for they are all understaffed and under-resourced as with everywhere else in medical. Most of the staff has been recruited from Trill with a smattering of fleet personnel to fill the important holes.” He gave a slight shrug. “They are functional as well as they can. When the requested equipment and personal arrive things should be more on an even keel.” He gave a small nod towards the Captain. “But until then we do what we can with what we have.”

“I’ve been approached by a few people,” Dahr said. “A family therapist, a dentist, and, of all people, a veterinarian. They all want space to open a clinic. I suggested that the dentist and the therapist speak with you, to see if there was a need. The veterinarian, well, I told her she could set up a clinic on the Medical Complex level. I know there is an open office space available. I just wanted to let you know who is occupying it.”

Mark nodded. “We do have a lot of expansion space at the moment and it would be great to use as much as we can. It also means that if people have to be shuffled around later we already have an understanding of their need and requirements.”

“Excellent. I informed them to see you,” Dahr told Edwards. “I’m not sure when they’ll turn up, but they seemed eager so I’m certain it’ll be soon.”

Dahr looked around to find the Roxy had already separated herself from the two men. She was talking to several of the pediatric nursing staff. They all looked over at Dahr and Edwards and suddenly started laughing. Casian shook his head and rolled his eyes. He turned back to Edwards.

“I recognize that laugh,” he said. “Trust me, she’s talking about me.”

Mark gave a polite smile.

“I would not know sir.”

Then he called over to Roxy, “If you’re done embarrassing me, shall we leave Dr. Edwards to his work?”

Mark nodded. Roxy turned and nodded, heading towards them, still giggling.

“It has been nice meeting you Dr. Dahr and I look forward to working with you. My door is always open so if you need anything please do not hesitate to ask.”

He looked over at the Captain. “Sir, it's always good to see you here in medical.”

Dahr started to walk out and motioned for Edwards to follow. More work talk.

“How are the cadets working out for you, Mark?” he asked.

“They are doing well but they are realizing that you actually learn things outside the classroom.”

“They have offered more, but I’m pretty sure you can handle it with the fourth years. Third years? I don’t think so. But if you need more help, they have been offered.”

“I am happy with the fourth years as it will give them some good experience before graduating. Unless we have a massive influx of patients we should hold off bringing the third years for the moment sir.”

“Thanks for your time, Doctor,” Dahr said, bidding him farewell.

Roxy shook hands with Edwards and smiled. She bid her farewells and turned to Casian. “Where to next?” She took hold of his hand and walked side by side.
