(USS Illuminar - Deck 6 - Laboratory of Drs. Gaillus Penn and Teller - Drs. Gaillus Penn and Teller -0830)

The night spilled into the bar, the dim lights vainly fighting against the darkness. He sat in the corner of the bar, a glass in front of him, eyes scanning the room. A torn black and white photo sat on the bar, a memory from a past life. She was in trouble, at least that was what the urgent telegram implied. Sam Spade rubbed his chin before taking another drink of his martini. Five more minutes, he thought. She deserved that. The clock ticked away. With a sigh, he dropped a bill on the counter and moved into the night.

As he turned the corner, he caught the tail, so he started to speed up, hoping to get into the next alley and get the jump on him. Sam was pretty sure it was Joel Cairo, a shady contact who caused more trouble than he was worth.

Sam entered the alley and blended into the darkness there. He watched as Cairo pause before heading down the street. Sam counted to 20, before exiting the alley and going back on his way. If it was important, Cairo would be waiting at the office. If not, he’d be calling from the lockup. Either way, Sam could wait.

The sounds of the city were shattered by the sound of a single gunshot. Sam felt the bullet enter his shoulder and throw him back into the garbage cans scattering the metal against the pavement.

The sound of the crashing chair filled the laboratory. Teller’s arms flailed as he fell back to the floor. “Zinda, his face black, his eyes red,” he said in exclamation. His glass broke into a dozen pieces, scattering across the floor.

Penn was startled to consciousness by the sound of his partner behind him. He had been about to kiss a delectable young woman that had come to the lab in only a lab coat and a smile. He lifted his head from the desktop and nonchalantly wiped the drool puddle with his lab coat.. He looked to see if Teller had observed it, confident that he had not. It would mean hours of ribbing.

Teller struggled to his feet, picking up his chair. “Shaka, when the walls fell,” he said sadly, looking at the pool of liquid on the floor. The sounds and lights on the screen attracted his attention.

Shaking his head he turned his own attention to the screen that was flashing between read and green. He rubbed his eyes and forced them to focus on the data that was running across it. He got half way through the data then froze.

“Sweet mother of pearl!” he exclaimed. “Sokath his eyes uncovered. Vazzini to Fizzic about the Pirate Roberts. Niagara Falls, slowly I turned.”

Teller looked at his screens and began reviewing the results of their searches. “Swigert to Houston, about the Odyssey,” he said, “Hotlips rings General Hammond.”

Penn nodded and tapped the comm button on the desk console. “Commander Gregory, we have what you were looking for and you’re not going to be happy about it.”

=^= Acknowledged =^= the commander said. =^= Can you bring it to the bridge to review? =^=
