"There has been no conspiracy to replace you," Sekal said to McKenzie,
"merely an unfiltered summation of the thought process of one who knows the
internal workings of Klingon politics." Then addressing Lani', the Captain
said, "Despite your reservations, the Ambassador has been chosen to
represent Federation interests in this matter and I expect you to offer
guidance rather than criticism Lieutenant."
"My apologies, Sirs," the half-Vulcan said, in a much more Vulcan, less
Klingon manner. "My bearing was meant to be probative. My approach was curt
because time is of the essence here. My demeanor here has not been to
communicate any particular intent, nor any desired outcome. I appreciate
being called for my input, and I approached the matter in the most direct
way possible, given the implied urgency. I am sorry, however, if any of
this has resulted in any offense. None was truly intended."
Sekal nodded. "Now, with that settled I suggest we turn our attention to
the matter at hand, refrain from confrontation and work out an equitable
plan for moving forward. As for the conduct of my officers Ambassador..."
His gaze was unflinching as he gazed into McKenzie's eyes. "I suggest that
if you have reservations you speak with me of them in private rather than
airing them in public. While members of the Federation they have a vested
interest in their native affairs but I will take the steps necessary to
ensure they remain on course until this matter is resolved."
(McKenzie's reply)
"A vested interest in their native affairs, you said," Lani's addressed to
Sekal. "And consequently, involvement with a race that has several times
been at war with the Federation. That's a difficult position to be in. As
you both know, Sirs, Klingons tend to define themselves in terms of their
enemy. A warrior with no adversary faces an identity crisis. Perhaps
fortunately, that crisis is often turned inward, within the Empire itself.
Note the frictions between the Houses, for example. Makes me very glad I'm
not from a major House. And DI'al is unlikely to ever be one. I don't even
always wear its emblem. It really is that far below notice in Klingon
politics. That being the case, my involvement here — to the extent that you
both wish it — works in favor of the Federation's goals. No Klingons, no
matter their faction, would be inclined to believe my bloodline biases me
in favor of one House or the other. Klingons do have long memories, but
while my House has never done anything historically significant, it has
also never instigated any long-standing feud. Here, on Qo'noS, I'm a
political nobody."
