(Qo'nos- Council Chamber - Chancellor Morek - 0805)
All had arrived and sat waiting for the meeting to begin. The deliberations
today had already been partially laid out as the petition of Ariel Trei
would be considered. The progressive Pe'tah had brought this petition to
their notice during the previous session and Morek had called an early halt
so that all might give it due reflection.
He gazed at Pe'tah while wondering why he considered the Ascension of a
half blood to be worthy to be worthy of selection while he drummed the
fingers of his left hand upon the tabletop. There was whispering among
scattered heads of houses and more than a few grumbles. What was he waiting
for?
~Why am I waiting?~
He raised the mug of bloodwine and drank half its contents before setting
it down before him then looked at it with a somber expression. "A flagon
half full is a sad thing and it mocks me. I could fill it with water I
suppose but that would water it down until it isn't worth tasting and its
potency would be destroyed."
There were several mutters. Was the Chancellor losing his grip? Why did he
appear so maudlin over a cup of bloodwine this morning?
"Or I could fill it with a strong whiskey. None of its potency would be
lost, no doubt I could drink less yet it would have a greater kick." He
stared into the flagon as the others exchanged looks. Was he going mad?
"But that would destroy its taste, potent yet with a balanced flavor
pleasing to a thingen."
He looked up from the flagon and his gaze traveled about the council
chamber. "What good would it do to water it down or seek to strengthen it.
Either lose its potency on one hand or its flavor on the other. Either way
the bloodwine is destroyed."
He hurled it to crash against the wall behind as he stood to his feet. The
remaining drink not escaping from it during the toss splashed against the
floor and wall.
"In its pure form a sublime drunk that sets fire to our blood and seasons
our celebrations. Should we seek to change or improve upon it?"
A crooked smile touched his lips at their silence.
"And what of the blood of a Klingon? When mixed with another race will it
retain its steel? Can one steeped in another culture step into this one and
live up to the standards of our forefathers, our honored dead? Will they
bring honor to our society and join the ranks of the honored dead?"
He stepped away from his chair and began walking slowly about the table.
"I challenged you to think on this before we adjourned and I expect you to
voice your mind. Shall we allow one of mixed race to enter into our rites
and customs?"
He stopped behind Pe'tah. "And if we do then where does it end?"
(Reply: Pe'tah, Ahnek)
