Day: 4
Stardate: 2446.04.28
(USS Illuminar - Deck 1 - Conference Room - CEO - Lieutenant Tegian Pex -
1450)
The Matillian followed Tegian out of the conference room, replying to his
query about the two engineers sent outside to assess the damage to the
Illuminar. "As far as I am aware they are still out there, already
starting the repairs. You are more than welcome to join them. I'm certain
that they would appreciate your input. Repairing the hull of a starship is
often more complex than it first appears since you can't just transport the
damaged sections away."
He saw the quizzical look on Tegian's face and realized that it probably
wasn't common knowledge. "Have you ever wondered why it's not a standard
practice to knock out the ships shielding and simply transport sections of
the hull away, dismantling it. in the process?"
Tegian smiled, knowing exactly the reason, but wanted to let Bohb continue
his lecture.
"The Duranium outer layer of the hull is coated with a sheet of AGP
ablative ceramic fabric chemically bonded onto a substrate of tritanium,
incorporating a series of superconducting molybdenum-jacket of waveguide
conduits. This serves to distribute and disperse the energy of tactical
deflectors, and prevents transporter locks on sections of the hull."
"That'd be a pretty nasty weapon, wouldn't it? If you could just transport
sections of the hull away?" Tegian grimaced, thinking of the damage.
"Do you feel up to minding the progress in here, while I go out? While we
were giving our reports to the Commander, I got word that the fires are all
out in Deck 9. No significant damage in any of the lab, although the
owners of those labs will need to let us know if any of the equipment needs
to be repaired or replaced. I didn't think it was safe for my people to
start powering things up without their presence."
(reply Bohb)
Tegian continued to look at his PADD. "All the turbolifts are fine,
although there's still various reports of some systems offline. I suspect
we have power relays that need to be addressed. I'm going to give Ensign
zh'Firee a few of the Cadets so that they get more experience diagnosing
the failures. And I'm going to have everyone work a sixteen hour shift,
with breaks for food, water and bathrooms every few hours until we get the
repairs completed."
Tegian hit his combadge and relayed all of that to zh'Firee as they took
the turbolift back to Deck 10.
(USS Illuminar - Deck 10 - Main Shuttlebay - CEO - Lieutenant Tegian Pex -
1454)
They arrived at the shuttlebay to see a scurry of activity as most of the
Alpha and Beta engineering teams were clearing the debris from the
explosion. "I'm going to take Ensign Waffles with me outside. My father
always taught me when doing a spacewalk to take a buddy, if you have the
option."
He walked to where Charlie was working with a few other engineers, clearing
the debris around one of the crumpled beams. "Ensign Waffles, if you're up
for it, I'd like for you to suit up with me to examine the outside of the
Illuminar.
The Ensign looked up at Tegian, clearly exhausted, having spent a few hours
playing firefighter. "Okay, change of plans. Why don't you go up to Main
Engineering after finding something to eat and drink and take over for
Ensign zh'Firee for the rest of the shift. Take whomever else was on your
crew in the tubes along with you. I don't need any of you dropping from
exhaustion. Have Ensign zh'Firee come down here and help supervise
repairs. I'll find someone else to spacewalk with me."
Tegian looked around. So many faces he didn't yet recognize and knew that
he had to get to know. But, it was only day 2 as the chief. And he wasn't
expecting to have needed to know everyone just yet.
He saw Cadet Ocano over at the other beam and walked over to her. "Cadet
Ocano, do you feel up to a spacewalk to check out the damage outside?" She
looked up eagerly and nodded. "Okay, then, let's get suited up."
Tegian and Maia walked over to the Aft EV Airlock, found space suits that
fit and spent time checking them over, completely, making sure that
everything was completely charged, that they had plenty of air and that the
suits had no signs of damage. They got dressed and then checked each other
to make sure that they were properly suited and that there were no leaks.
The suits showed green so they entered the airlock, attaching safety
lines.
Before cycling the airlock and exiting, Tegian stopped the Cadet and
touched the side of his helmet. "Cadet, can you hear me?"
She nodded and Tegian smiled and pointed to her helmet. She looked
confused for a moment and then touched her helmet. "Oh, sorry,
Lieutenant. Yes, I can hear you."
Tegian chuckled. "Good. Out there, we need to be able to communicate.
Short of putting out helmets together, the only other way is via our
communications in the helmets. And we're going to need to get in touch
with Ensign McGuyver and Cadet Adams when we get out there. But, first,
I'm going to let the Bridge know I'm leaving the ship."
He touched his helmet again. "Lieutenant Tegian to the Bridge. Cadet
Ocano and I are performing an EVA out of the Deck 10 Airlock to examine the
shuttle bay doors."
(Reply Bridge iyw)
He then turned off the contact to the Bridge and left communications with
the Cadet on and cycled the airlock. He reached down to turn on his
magnetic boots, made sure Maia did the same and left the airlock heading
for the shuttle bay doors.
He could already spot two forms near them. He first, secured their safety
lines to the anchors just outside the airlock, before they trundeled their
way across. "Ensign McGuyver and Cadet Adams, what have you found?" asked
Tegian, looking at the hull and the door opening that looked twisted. What
he saw didn't fill him with hope, but they'd been out here longer.
(Reply McGuyver, Adams)
