(USS Illuminar - Deck 8 - CSO Office - CSRD Lt. Bohb and CSO Lt. Lanista- 1500)

Bohb had followed the advice of Tegian and collected some samples of the soot and residue from the explosion. As he analyzed it there was something there that just didn’t make sense. Bohb had been around the universe once or twice, so when he met something he’s never seen before it created a need to know. This was outside his area of expertise. He needed help.

He made his way to the new CSO’s office and rang the door chime.

“Enter with business,” the half-Vulcan/half-Klingon said.

When Bohb entered he got his first look at the CSO took him by surprise. It was rare for him to find anyone that came near to his size, and she did. She looked almost as much Vulcan as she did Klingon. He wondered if her temperament was equally split.

“Lieutant Lanista,” he said stepping forward, “I require your services.)

“What is it you require, and in what amount of time?” Lanista asked.

Bohb stepped forward and put his PADD down, “The explosion of the Klingon shuttle left this residue in the soot. It is a substance that I am unfamiliar with, which is making a statement. I was wondering if you knew it, or might be able to tell me something more.”

“I’ll put my best personnel on it. And the implication is that this is a Security matter, and therefore critical. My ‘best personnel’, until I get to know my staff, is me. And I’ve got some direct Security experience. I shall have an answer for you in short order.” Lanista paused. “Is there anything else?”

Bohb was a little perplexed. This was the first time the two had actually met, and had hoped that there would be more interaction than this. Perhaps she was more Vulcan than Klingon in these matters. He needed to think more like if he were talking with Saleke.

“Well, I did think that we should have more interaction, since I was recently moved to the Chief of Research and Development,” Bohb said, “Perhaps we can set up a time, when we are not busy, where we can discuss the department and how it will work with the science department?”

“Wonderful,” Lanista said, using a word not ‘natural’ to either Vulcan or Klingon discourse. “We can confer over chess, if you like. The dialog and the dynamic of the game, together, will show us both how the other thinks.”

Bohb smiled and laughed, “Chess? Do you know Admiral Saleke? He tried to teach me the game, but I found its complexities a little… difficult to master. If you play well you will find me a poor opponent.”

“I find it relaxing. And even the mistakes you anticipate making would speak to your intent. People reveal themselves in ways of which they are unaware. Life is Klin zha kinta, ‘the game with live pieces.’”

Bohb grunted, “That sounds familiar too. However, if you want to try and peel my onion feel free. I’m just afraid you won’t find much.”

“You have an interesting manner of expression, sir. Perhaps it is the custom of your species’ culture to downplay oneself. It is not that way among my father’s people, however. To my mother’s race, though, an empty onion would be a surprise, to be sure. Maybe we’ll both discover something we do not expect.”

Bohb shrugged, “Perhaps. Down play? No, it is the custom of the Magillan people to know your limitations. What is the expression, “Know thyself? Perhaps I’ve spent too much time with Doctor’s Penn and Teller.”

“Ah, yes. Penn and Teller. I’ve heard of them but not had a chance to contend with their idiosyncrasies yet. Nor this other man — Vermyx — who appears to believe science is some kind of dodge, at least judging by his reputation so far.”

Bohb rocked on his feet with a chuckle. “Idiosynchracies? That is the word to describe the doctors. Be prepared to know your trivia, as they speak in a brand of Tamarian that is a mix of standard phrases and phrases from their collective experiences together. As for Mr. Vermyx… he apparently live by the motto that it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission.”

“Don’t all Humans, though? ‘The word is “No” — we are therefore going anyway,’ ~ James Kirk, 2285.”

“I have not made that same sweeping generalization,” Bohb said. “I have found the humans to be most reasonable. However, Vermyx is Iotian, and not human. Our two species probably have more in common than either of us might agree upon.”

“IDIC is as IDIC does, I suppose. I think, though, that I’ll fare better with the Doctors than the gangster. In either case, a mind-meld would be more efficient. But my expertise in that aspect of my Vulcan side tends to be … shall we say … inartistic.”

“A dangerous prospect indeed, then,” Bohb said with a nodd. “The good news is Doctor Penn is quite articulate in both Tamarian and Standard. So you might get more from him without such a need.”

“Ironic, then. That the ‘pen’ should be the one that tells, but the ‘teller’ should be the least forthcoming.”

Bohb laughed at the play with the words, “Oh Teller is quite articulate, too much at times. You just have to figure out what he’s saying. But then again, even with his standard, Penn might have a similar issue. However, that is for another time. I would like to know about this residue.” he tapped the PADD.

“I’ll address it immediately. My office and quarters doors are open to you for this, and any other such, ship’s business. At any time, day or night. Once my analysis is complete, you’ll be the second to know.”

Bohb nodded, “I appreciate your… expedience. I have a feeling that there may be more to this than, to paraphrase Mr. Vermyx, we have bargained for.”

“In my family’s business, one does not bargain, but I do understand the reference. Iotians may look Human, but they behave far more like Ferengi.”

Bohb looked intrigued, “Indeed they do. Very interesting. I will leave you to it.”

“I’ll have something for you soonest opportunity, then.”
