Mission:  Prelude
Day: 1
Stardate:  2446.03.23

NRPG: Because the timing has been moved, I’m doing a bit of a revision here to make Alex’s outfit work. RPG:

(Earth, Outside Shadow Pines – Road – Rabbi Josef Bachman – 1842)

The young man went into the house and was replaced by a young lady. From the way that she had gently dismissed the young man, Joseph got to the impression that this fine house belonged to her.

“What brings you to my home? Mr…?”

“Rabbi Josef Bachman, madam,” Joseph said. “And I am here to discuss something with Alexander Dyson.”

“Where did you say you were from?”

“Brooklyn, New York.” Joseph said. ~These days.~ Back when he had gotten his current task, he had been living on Mars. But last year, he had moved back to Earth. “Is Mister Dyson here ?”

“Honestly, if this Mr. Dyson was in my home, I would probably give him a message but not tell you.  I like to protect the anonymity of my friends.”

“I understand that, young lady. But…” That was a far as he got before there was a development.

(Earth, Outside Shadow Pines – Road – ACONN Alexander Dyson – 1837)

After Alex had changed into white jeans and a white T-shirt, he had looked at himself in the mirror and decided that the look was incomplete. He had brought civilian clothes, but not extra shoes. And just the T-shirt looked wrong. So he had gone into town and gotten himself white sneakers and a thin, white jacket. He could have gone for a suit jacket, but had picked something less formal that fitted with his shirt. They had given a bag for his Starfleet boots at the store.

That done, he was now on his way back to the estate. He had beamed the bulk of the distance back and forth, but he had wanted to walk the last bit. He needed to clear his head a little after today. ~Time to break out the pad and pencil.~ As he walked, he pondered if he would go to the wedding. The truth was that he was a complete stranger to the two ladies getting married. On the other hand, this was a good chance to integrate with the crew. So he was on the fence.

But his pondering were ended at this point, because he noticed that Doctor Solice was talking to….a Rabbi ? The man was carrying a case that Alex recognized immediately. ~No way, it’s can be….but he did say he would.~ And when Rabbi Simon said he would do something, he did something….

(Santa Maria Orphanage – The 47 – 0800)

Alex walked into The 47 for one last time. Tomorrow, he was leaving for the Civilian Freighter School. The 47 was based on number of the room. They were on the fourth floor, in room number seven. (So technically, it was 4.7.) This room was where Alex had learned one of the three things he had learned at Santa Maria.

The first thing he had learned, was fighting. ~We punched, kicked and clawed our ways through a lot of scuffles over the years.~ Even thought the staff absolutely did not approve.

The second thing he had learned, was how to salvage a turkey. But that was a story for another time. NRPG: Fixing a mess-up I made in my last post. RPG: Mister McDonald was this orphanage cook and physical education teacher.

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, McDonald taught physical education and on Tuesday and Thursday, we taught cooking. Mr. McDonald also ran the kitchen with Rabbi Simon. The Rabbi made sure that there were kosher, vegetarian and halal meals and McDonald took care of everything else.

Which brought his train of thought to The 47. On Sunday, this room was used for Christian services. Then Monday through Friday morning saw it as the classroom for Rabbi Simon’s music class. Friday afternoon and Saturday saw the room used to celebrate the Sabbath. It was here that Alex had learned his third thing.

After it had become crystal clear that neither Alex or Emile could sing, Rabbi Simon had given them instruments to try out. Emile had not known what he should play, until Father Samuels – who led the Christian services – had unlocked the organ that came with room. It turned out that Emile had a talent for playing it. As for Alex, nobody had been as surprised as him when he had turned out to be good at playing the violin.

“Taking one last look, yingele ?”

“Yes, Rabbi. We had a lot of fun and tears here.”

“Yes, we did, yingele.”

The Rabbi gave him a gentle tap on the shoulder, then left him alone. Before he walked out, Alex stopped at a display next to the door. ~It is tradition.~ In the display was an instrument that Alex had always gawked at. But he had never dared to ask about it. Then - one day - the Rabbi had said that when he passed, Alex would become her owner…

(Earth, Outside Shadow Pines – Road – ACONN Alex Dyson – 1842)

“I understand that, young lady. But…”

“Good evening, Rabbi, Doctor.”

“Good evening, yingele.”

(Reply Solice)

“Has Rabbi Simon passed ?” Alex asked, despite already knowing the answer.

Simon Cantor had been getting up there in years when Alex had arrived at age seven. He had passed peacefully in his sleep six years ago. The Rabbi did not answer in words, but simply gave him a nod. Alex’s eyes feel on the case that the Rabbi was carrying. Things like this were one of the reasons he had not returned to Sector 001 for a long time.

“Did he leave that to me ?”

(Reply Solice iyw)

“I think he did, only his Santa Maria children called him Rabbi Simon. Do you want it, Alex yingele ?” Alex nodded and the Rabbi handed him the case. That done, he turned to Solice. “Have a nice day, milady.”

(Reply Solice)

As the Rabbi walked away, Alex put down the bag with his boots and the case he had just been handed. Taking a deep breath, he opened the case. As he opened it, he gasped at the sight. “He actually did it, that Meshuggeneh man, he actually did it.”

Alex and Emile had ended up learning plenty of Yiddish words from the Rabbi. And this seemed like a good time to use some. He gently took the instrument out of its case. “He left me a real, un-replicated, Stradivarius. The Lauterbach, made in 1719, stolen during World War Two and later ended up in storage at the Pentagon. He really did it."

He sat down on the ground and did his best not the tremble as he held the 700 years old instrument. "Oh Vey.”
