Mission: Prelude
Day: 1
Stardate: 2446.03.23
(USS Illuminar - Deck 4 - Officers Lounge - CMDR Dieter Gregory - 1200)
Gregory walked slowly from his office to the Officers Lounge. His leg
still bothered him, so he leaned heavily on his cane. He really needed
to make something special as a cane, but didn’t have the time. He still
tired easily, but the doctors said it would get better. Hence their
light duty requirements.
Walking into the Lounge, he was greeted by the friendly smile of Reolra
Dosar, the bartender and a friend with benefits. Not that he had any
benefits recently, especially since Dr. Kyllee made his flippant remark.
He limped to his favorite table and Reolra approached with a mug and tea
pot. “Special just for you Dieter,” she said as she poured the warm
liquid into the mug. “Not replicated either, leaves from Earth.”
Gregory took a sip of the hot liquid, cooling it by drawing air into his
mouth. “Very good,” he said.
“Careful, it’s hot,” Reolra said.
“Thanks for the warning. Something light Reolra. Perhaps some soup and
crusty bread, with butter please.”
She nodded, “I’ve got just the thing for you. Perk you right up.”
She headed off to the back while Gregory sat there, sipping his tea and
people watching.
Aggie scored privileges to the Officers club. She entered. This was
her first time there. Looking around not knowing anyone one until her
eyes was drawn to someone. "Who are you holding that extra seat for?"
Aggie was being a bit coy. Aggie knew the man but not from the ship but
from where she came from. The man here was younger verson of the man
she once met.
“Doctor Agnes, what a pleasant surprise,” Gregory smiled as he
struggled to get up, “You are most welcome to join me. I had just
ordered lunch, so Reolra will be back in a moment.”
Sitting back down, he took a sip of tea. “Has sickbay been quiet since
I left?”
“It has definitely been less enjoyable.” Aggie admitted. “How are you
doing? Running circles around everyone young ensign trying to find
where I hid your pants?” Aggie chuckled a bit. “Whatcha Drinking?”
Gregory chuckled, “Tea,” he replied, “I am on duty, even if it is light
duty, so just staying hydrated and caffeinated. As for young ensigns,
no chasing yet. Too busy catching up on reports and dealing with my
department. This is a nice easy cruise, so I can stand watch without
taxing myself too much.”
“How about you Dr. Agnes, finding things to your liking on the
Illuminar?” he asked.
“Oh it is alright. First time off Earth so it really is AMAZING. I
never could imagine all the different cultures there are. And I have
traveled many places on Earth.” Aggie was still a little star struck.
“It is funny, that I just came aboard. Traveled to meet the ship, just
to turn around and go back to Earth.”
“Star fleet works in mysterious ways,” Gregory said, “And I am still
trying to figure it all out.”
Reolra came back to the table, carrying a tray with a bowl of soup, a
small loaf of crusty bread and butter. She started putting the food in
front of Gregory. “It is a cross between Andorian cabbage soup and
Plomeek soup. I know it sounds strange, but it is delicious, and
guaranteed to get your libido supercharged” she said with a wink.
Turning to Agnes, “Hello, I am Reolra. Can I get you anything to eat or
drink?” she asked
“Well,” Aggie start. “Nice to meet you. I am Aggie. By any chance,
can I get a cup of tomato soup with a grilled cheese. Oh and some french
fries. And some of that tea that Mr. Greggory has. I appreciate.
Thank you.” Aggie smiled at the waittress.
“A classic old Earth comfort food, if I recall my history correctly,”
Reolra said. “I’ll go get that in for you.”
“Thanks. A taste of home.” Aggie commented.
She chuckled, “Don’t get this one started. He is expanding his pallet.
Used to be a ploughman’s lunch every day.”
Gregory looked wounded, “A bit of home is always good, and well, you do
make amazing meat pies, just don’t have the appetite I used to.”
Reolra brushed his cheek, “It’ll come back,” she said before turning to
Agnes, “Let me get that in for you.”
The woman walked away, leaving Agnes and Gregory alone again. “So, Dr.
Agnes, tell me about yourself? I like to get to know the crew both from
a command perspective and an operations perspective.”
“Oh me. Would you believe that this is the first time I ever left
earth. I am use to remove environments on Earth. A Doctor for
Exclusively rich people on the planet. Then one day there was a man.”
Aggie stopped there.
“I’m sorry,” he said as Reolra stopped by to deliver Agnes’ order.
“Enjoy,” she said as she moved off to another table.
“Have doctors bag, will travel. Sounds exciting. What was your
favorite place you visited?” he asked, trying to change the subject.
“I spent a summer in an exclusive community in the Bahamas. It was
amazing. I was able to swim with the dolphins. And well, I worked a
young doctor that believe in the sanctity of the sunset dinner.”
“Hmmm. Sunset dinner. Have to try that sometime,” Gregory said. “I’ve
never been to the Bahamas, so maybe when we hit Earth, I might go visit.”
“You should, though it has been many summers since I was there, I am
sure it has changed a bit,” Agness looked over at at Dieter. She
pictured that summer. Looking over at the man that could not get enough
of holding her hand, kissing her. They oftened picniced on the beach
her back against his chest as they ate fresh fruit, various shellfish,
and anything that that floated their boat. “I am surprised that you had
not been there. Perhaps some of your kin. Tell me more about you.”
“My story is kind of boring,” he began. “I was born in the south of
England. Found out I had a knack for technology and the outdoors. I
am, well not at the moment, a runner. I am also a free climber. I went
to MIT earning a degree in Quantum Mechanics. Spent some time at the
Daystrom institute. After college began working with some commercial
firms. That was not challenging, so I entered Star Fleet where the big
boys play and here I am,” he concluded as he took a sip of tea.
“Listen, I owe you a dance. What do you say when we are at Earth, we
head to the Bahama’s and find a place to dance. You can show me why
sunset dinners should be sacrosanct,” Gregory said.
“I suppose if you are up to that, I say it’s a date.” Aggie was curious
if the little hidden resort she stayed out was still there. “I suppose
I won’t have to steal your pants this time to keep you from running off.”
“I hear the dress is a bit more casual than on a starship,” he said,
“I might need a new wardrobe. “Since I don’t know where to go, have any
recommendations? We can book right now, or do we sleep on the beach?”
“We could do both. There was a resort I was quite fond of. It was the
Ocean club, but any resort can be nice as long as it is on the beach.”
Aggie thought about the last time she was there. She met a man that was
staying in the resort. He changed her life. She was call to his room
after he had fallen. She ended up stitching up a gash on the back of
his head. From there, they ended up spending two months together when
she was not running around treating every vacation aches and pains.
“Everything you need you can get there. I am sure there are islander
shops near by, but replicating some Bermuda shorts and some Hawaiian
shirts would be a good start.”
“Indeed, that is a good idea. I’ll get on that when I get back to my
quarters. How is the food?” he asked
Aggie looked down and noticed she had not eaten a bit. “Ummm Well
maybe I should try.” Aggie picked up her spoon and tried the now cold
soup. “I bet it was probably better when it was hot. My mistake.”
“Would you like me to have it warmed up?” he asked.
“No.” Aggie too a bite of the sandwich, “I think it is getting pretty
warm here already.”
“Indeed,” Gregory said as he pushed his empty bowl to the side. “So we
will make arrangements to stay at this Oceans Club. Maybe a suite.”
Changing topics for a minute, “What will it take to get me off of light
duty? Perhaps you could give me a check up?”
“Well, My Dear Mr. Gregory, that would not be ethical of me to treat
you, in more ways than one. But if being taking off Light duty is the
way you want me to treat you, then I guess, you will never find out the
other way. Besides Light Duty does not mean Light play.”
“Well when we finish here, perhaps you can help me to my quarters. I do
get tired in the afternoon, and have not been sleeping well. Do you
have a suggestion for that?” he replied.
“Sure thing, sweet cheek. But maybe a little less caffeine would help
with that sleep.” Aggie suggested. “I am ready when you are.”
