Mission: Death in the Shadows
Day: 9
Stardate: 2446.02.09

(Kenasu Predator -- Bridge -- Commander Hoto -- 1414)

"Get us the belp out of here!" He slapped the control to open a comm to the
Warmaid. "Go to warp damn it!"

Behind them the Lancer erupted as a phaser blast cut through it like it was
tissue paper. And he didn't relax as the slipstream of warp caused by the
doppler effect kicked in.

"What is that damned ship doing?"

"Its turning commander ... returning to the planet by its course. Should be
turn and pursue?"

"Are you a belping moron? Hell no! We are staying on course and getting the
belp out of here." He relaxed back into his chair just a bit. They still
had one more hurdle to clear. The Federation ship on the outskirts of the
system.

"Just asking. I don't want to die any more than you do."

Hoto turned his head to him then took a deep breath. "We thought we had
them beat, bringing in a tried and true war vessel but we never figured on
them having a belping warship in attendance. I've never heard of a klingon
cruiser being taken down with so little effort. What the belp was that
thing?"

His navigator was already ahead of him as he read from the screen.
"Prometheus class. The Feds top of the line warship from like 30 years ago
but updated. Its power curve read like the other one, nearly off our chart."

"Does it have a name?"

"Yeah, USS Hades. It still has its NX designation. They apparently liked it
so much they kept it."

The very name sent chills down Hoto's spine, it was a fitting name for a
ship of war, sending its enemies to an early and catastrophic grave.

"Damn it." They had figured they had the edge in this fight. The klingon
ship had been their equalizer along with seven marauder ships and more
incoming else Hoto wouldn't even have lifted off from the planet or more
likely would have done so just to make a run for it. They hadn't counted on
three starships and one being such a heavy hitter. And with a cloak to boot!

The Kang had never stood a chance. The Hades had de-cloaked and swatted it
like it was a bloodfly. Their great equalizer her gone down for the count
and their remaining ships were exposed as pretenders. These weren't
fighting ships, they were designed to take down soft and unsuspecting prey.

Yes the Syndicate's war with the Federation had started and just as
abruptly ended. And their fantastic new weapons had failed them. They were
papier mache tigers growling helplessly.

"Coming within range of the third ship soon. Orders?"

"Swing wide around it you idiot! Don't give them any ideas."

He was tense as the two ships made a large loop around the Tolliver which
scanned them but made no move to intercept. It was only when they were
around it and running free of the system in deep space that he relaxed.

"Orders?"

"We are going home and ditching these useless missiles unless we happen
upon a juicy target on the way." Hoto still had substantial savings. Not
what he had wanted to accumulate and sticking a bit more back would be
welcome but he could not afford to take any chances now, not if he wanted
to live to spend it. Retirement was coming sooner than expected.
