(USS Illuminar - Deck 15 – The Armoury – Chief of Security Lt Jn Keung Lee 1415)
Ensign Lucas McQuire was the Armoury Officer on duty and had been overseeing the inventory of phasers that were in secured lockers throughout the ship. His official inventory list showed that there were 400 stored phasers. However the reality may be different. Only Security officers and the command staff had authorised access to the weapons. Phasers could have ‘been borrowed’ and not been returned. His inventory doesn’t show the working state of the phasers either. If the ship ever gets boarded, it would be mildly embarrassing if the phasers malfunctioned! The hatch slid open and Lt Keung Lee stepped into the armoury. Lucas glanced up and to his mild surprise, saw who it was and leapt to his feet, snapping to attention behind the high counter.
"Good afternoon,Sir"
"Hello ensign McQuire. Is the range available?"
"Uhm, yes, sir. You can use lane 1”
"Good," Lee said. "Could you set the range for me - trial competition standard, target gates at twenty-five and forty metres. Could you also issue me with the Barrett M82A1 ‘Light Fifty’ sniper rifle
"Not a problem, Sir," replied Lucas. "I'll just be a moment." He selected the computer-controlled range targets on the console from his side of the counter, before moving into one of the strong rooms to retrieve the rifle. A minute later, he returned to the counter and laid rifle on top along. He also placed a set of ear-protectors as a protective device, although the chief hadn't requested for them. He was not surprise at the Chief’s desire for using ancient weapons. The Armoury had a mixture of energy, non energy weapons as well as bladed weapons.
"As requested, Sir"
"Thank you ensign."
Lucas gestured at the rifle.. "I understand the rifle has been modified based on your recommendations?"
"You are quite correct" said lee." The Barrett M82A1 'Light Fifty' sniper rifle was probably one of the best known weapons of its time, . He had worked with the ship's armourers and a couple of engineers borrowed from Aly's department, to develop a Gauss-propelled version of the classic propellant-based weapon. “ Instead of standard explosive-propellant bullets, this improved variant used a series of supercharged Gauss magnets to propel a projectile down the barrel toward a target. It required an enormous amount of energy. It generated very little sound, even less heat and could achieve a muzzle velocity far in excess of the old-fashioned firearm rounds. The muzzle velocity of the average rifle might be 400 metres per second; according to early field trials, Keung's custom-modified Gauss rifles could propel a solid slug of ferrous-tritanium metal at something around 3000 metres per second. With a click of a switch, the rifle could be transformed into a phaser rifle.” It occurred to Lee, that the ensign who only recently joined the Armoury team on a rotating basis had not been aware of the weapon which had been redeveloped.
*I’m impressed’ said the ensign who since taking on this job felt he was constantly on a learning curve.
“You have to try it out sometime” said Lee. “This rifle packs quite a punch. If you listen to the hum of the rifle and knew your own strength, it becomes almost instinctive to compensate and achieve accuracy. It is a very powerful sensation. Mind you, placed in the hands of an inexperienced user, this weapons can be lethal not to themselves but to colleagues around them," explained Keung deliberately.
He was about to leave for the firing range when ensign Lucas said “I got an idea to increase the shooting skills of the security officers.”
“Oh?” said Lee “What is your idea?”
"We could have a shipwide marksmanship competition - not just for the security team, but for any interested crewmembers - in a variety of weapon classes, of course. Energy and non-energy weapons."
"A marksmanship competition, you say?" Lee repeated, turning the idea over in his head. It was a double-edged sword of sorts: it would be the best showcase for the talents of his department... unless someone else showed them up. .
"We could make it an annual event. I believe it would draw a lot of interest from the crew, and a trophy would be awarded to the winners."
Lee nodded. That would be interesting “Ensign. That is a excellent suggestion, perhaps you could send me a proposal for this competition, I will…..”
Lee’s combadge buzz. It was from Lieutenant Dieter Gregory
"Gregory to Chief Lee. We have been given permission by the Admiral to begin boarding the Klingon vessel. It is disabled and drifting with minimal power. I am sending the
schematics and overlay of lifesigns to you now. Secure the ship and the crew."
“Acknowledge.” Replied Lee who suddenly perked up in excitement at the thought of putting a boarding team together. “I let you know when we are ready to go.”
He turned to ensign Lucas. “Look like writing your proposal is to be put on hold for the moment. Start preparing issuing out weapons including the Barrett M82A1 rilles. They will be issued to the snipers on the team. Issue Phasers type 1 as well as phaser carbines”
