Mission: Death in the Shadows
Day: 9
Stardate: 2446.02.09
(USS Hades - Deck 1 - Bridge - CO- Vice Admiral Saleke - 1320)
The Hades had split off from the Tolliver and was heading out of the system
when a call came from his right. "Admiral, I'm getting some odd readings."
"Be more specific please Mr. Randall."
"It appears to be a gravimetric distortion wave sir."
The Vulcan turned his head. "On screen."
The viewscreen lit up with a scientific overlay showing the area of
gravimetric distortion. It was weakest on the edge of the solar system but
became stronger as it traveled farther within the system. It looked like
... "Is that a wake Mister Randall?"
That's what it looks like sir and it's headed into the system."
"Destination?"
"The sixth planet sir."
There was no doubt what it was, the Hades was itself equipped with a
cloaking device. Of all the ships in this newly rebuilt fleet having this
fighting ship catch wind of you was guaranteed to invite disaster. Saleke
was a veteral, he knew this ship backward and forward. He had taken her out
on her maiden voyage and CO'ed her for years. He was at home on this ship
like no other. The Hades had also been upgraded with the new warp drive,
weapons and shields. She was a match for Illuminar and more. More because
her commander had written the book on what a Prometheus class could and
could not do. He had been through countless battles and with this ship had
beaten a Myenru armada. And he was well aware of the strengths and
weaknesses of a cloak.
"Mr. Yates cloak the ship, Mrs. Chambers set course for the sixth planet,
all available speed. Warp six."
"Admiral we will be going through the outer solar system but there are
still gravitational eddies. Warp six will be hazardous."
He caught the eye of the Helmsman as she turned. "I am aware of this
Lieutenant but the Illuminar does not know their danger. Warp six or best
speed."
She turned. "Yes sir. Going to warp."
The Prometheus class vessel faded from view just before rocketing to warp.
(USS Hades - Deck 1 - Bridge - CO- Vice Admiral Saleke - 1350)
"Sir I'm picking up a firefight coming toward us. Illuminar has engaged the
enemy. Three marauder class ships matching the description of those that
crippled the freighter. ETA two minutes."
"Anything else. Mr. Randall?"
"Nothing yet sir... wait!" The voice of his science officer was strained.
"Something just decloaked. It reads as a K'Tinga class battlecruiser.
Klingon."
"I am aware of the class Lieutenant." THe K'Tinga class had taken the place
of the D5 cruiser in the Klingon arsenal nearly a century ago. It was tough
and hardy and had been in the forefront of countless battles among the
Klingon fleet. They were also extremely numerous and easily replaced. Were
there Klingons aboard? This deep into Federation space? I Klingon an attack
or probe.
""They have energized weapons and fired on the Illuminar.."
"Helm slow speed and position us at five thousand kilometers from the
Klingon vessel off their port bow."
"Aye sir. Altering course"
"Tactical prepare to disengage the cloak. Prepare torpedo tubes and fire a
full spread as we come out. Power up phasers now." This was not something
that a 'normal' ship could do because of the power curve because the cloak
ate up too much energy. But that was on a standard dilithium drive. The new
drive had over twice the energy capacity of the standard dilithium model
meaning it could power the cloak while readying weapons. Firing while at
cloak was not an option owing to the distortion field while at cloak but a
ship outfitted like this one came out with fangs bared.
"Torpedo tubes loaded, energizing phasers,"
"Slowing Captain, in position in 10, 9, 8..."
"Drop the cloak and fire torpedoes."
The USS Hades shimmered into position at near point blank range facing the
K'Tinga class. "Fire torpedoes, minimum spread, delta pattern."
The quantum torpedoes leapt from the tubes and at .98c were upon the
klingon ship within a few seconds and hit its shields all along its port
side followed by full intensity phaser blasts which had the ship rocking
violently. "Tactical target her engines."
"Aye sir." The tactical officer was working the Tactical Holographic system
like a maestro and the full power phaser volleys were pounding its port
nacelle." Her shields are below twenty percent."
"Continue firing."
