“Don’t think thatjust cause of rank we know more than you about some things. I can guarantee youI don’t. Tell me about the last rescue?”
He paused for a momentgetting the memories straight in his head before he started.
“You might know thisor not. I am on secondment from a large humanitarian organisation which works overboth quadrants. We were responding to a volcanic disaster at a research stationlooking at how to improve large scale geothermic power. They had punchedthrough a fault line while trying to get a deep power tap operational. It had literallyblown the top of the mountain and the power station was half covered by ash anddebris by the time that we got there. I deployed in one of the ships shuttles witha four-person mobile surgical team which I was part of. It went from bad to worsebefore we actually landed. The explosion had messed up the planet’s atmosphere bad,so we had to take the shuttles. One of the response teams on the other shuttlewas an ex-marine and she told me that it was one of the worst drops she had everbeen on and she had done many drops under fire.”
He paused or a momentbefore carrying on.
“We some how got tothe ground without splattering ourselves into the planet. The research stationwas a mess. The explosion had caused mass casualties. There was a lot of burnsas well as people who had been hit by shrapnel as the explosion devastated itsway through station. It’s amazing how training kicks in, in situations like thatand that’s what we did. We deployed our makeshift operating theatre in the messhall and began to treat any wounded that we could get our hands on…”
Images of blood, pain and helplessness flowed through his mind, and he fought them down.
“…anyway when wehad not realised due to the problems with the sensors that there was a much biggereruption brewing that would obliterate the station and half the continent itwas on. We got the evacuation call late. Trying to transport some to a shuttlewith your finger plugging a hole in a ruptured aorta is not something I wouldwant to repeat.”
He gave a slightsmile.
“We got as many peopleas possible in the shuttles and used trainspotter enhancers to transport offthe station using the ascending shuttles as relay. We didn’t get everyone but alot more then if we had not gone down”
He paused for amoment.
“Sorry sir. That wasa bit more then you may have wanted for your question.”
“... and concernsfor this one now?”
Ewan gave a nod.
“I guess its mainlyhow much radiation they have gotten and how bad their symptoms are going to be.I have a basic understanding as its not my area of expertise you see. If itsnot caused physical problems, then we need to pump them full of anti-radiationdrugs and keep them segregated to reduce contamination. If it’s bad thendealing with their symptoms and we will see how good of a pilot Lieutenant Frostreally is.”
