"No. Not yet. I haven't been able to track him down. He has a lot on his plate. I don't want to burden him with this. He really is a good boss.”

“Why do you say that?” Braeden asked.

"I mean, everything Layla has destroyed, he and Ash have replaced it with something nicer. So I know he will do whatever he can, outside of traveling through time, to make it right."

“It sounds to me, though, like your problem is Layla is starting to destroy things that cannot be replaced.” He mused. He was trying to redirect Thea to the Captain, interpersonal issues are best resolved in frank and collegial conversation. But he was beginning to recognize that Thea wasn’t looking for a resolution to her problem as much as a chance to talk about it. She certainly could not threaten to slaughter the family dog in front of the captain. But she could safely do so with him.

"Sometimes I wonder about Layla,” Thea said, "about how normal she is. You know she was found on Mars as a puppy, in an abandoned research lab. It seems the dogs had been breeding there since the base was abandoned around 15 years ago, give or take. I don't know if they ever figured out what genes might have been passed on. Her sister Venus is also onboard, but I don't know if she is as destructive. But I also wonder...if its's just the genetic fear of ending up in a cage again.”

“It is also possible Layla feels confined… or more likely fears abandonment.” Braeden thought aloud.

“In my experience whatever is going on with a dog, has to do with what’s going on with the owner. I knew of one person who would somatize their stress into digestive issues. And their dog also had stomach issues, only compounding that person’s stress. Dogs are very empathic creatures, and that empathy also means they get upset when away from their master.”

“Hopefully this has been helpful?”
