Mission: Space was cool before it mattered

Day: 1

Stardate: 2446.04.25

(USS Exeter - Deck 9- Starlight lounge - CMO Lt. SG Heinrich Kruze- 1401)

Heinrich and Tyrek had been talking and drinking in the Starlight Lounge for four hours. Their conversation ranged from the profound to the inane, the dramatic to the comedic, the personal to the social. It had been far too long since Heinrich gave himself a chance to unwind, take some time away, and enjoy time with friends. He had not noticed the time passing when their conversation was broken up by a text message from the first officer.

"Oh no, It's Commander Jones." Tyrek sighed.

“What now?” Heinrich asked, suddenly remembering he was on duty.

"We've received a distress call from a nearby mining facility. They are experiencing a massive radiation hazard. He's authorized a response team and you my friend are at the top of the list." Tyrek said, shaking his head.

“Terrific.” He said, not happy that the conversation was being broken up.

"Good thing you brought that hypospray." Tyrek joked and pulled out his padd from his pocket and opened a list of personnel that would be qualified for the task.

"Duty calls my friend, I would take a nurse with you just in case.”

“Good idea. I doubt this is a job for one person. Could you get ahold of Ewan McDonald along with the others on the list? I need to get to the Cheron and familiarize myself with the mission on the way. See you later, Tyrek.” He said as he rushed out of the Lounge on his way to the docking bay.

He arrived in the Cheron with a basic medkit. He saw Ewan and Ethan on board and, to his shock, Trinity helming the ship. He had done his best the past few months to avoid her as much as possible. If she was walking down a corridor he ducked out. If she needed a checkup he passed her along to Dr. Vulon or Dr. Methor. He expressly avoided any place he knew the Flight Operations staff may be gathered. In a fit of superstition he even bowed out of any conversation that might bring up her name, afraid that she might be summoned. And now all that effort was for nothing, as he would be trapped with her in a shuttle, hoping perhaps by some grace of the Q Continuum she didn’t remember his cowardice. Hoping that by some grace of the universe she didn’t remember his past. And hoping at, at least, she wouldn’t bring anything up.

"The distress signal says that they have a build-up of Radiation in their environmental support systems and that according to their sensors of the exterior of the facility beaming out may be a little dicey ." Ethan remarked as Heinrich sat down.

“Excuse me sirs. Do we know if there are any other injures apart from the radiation?” Ewan asked.

“We do not, that was not part of the distress call,” Heinrich said, assuming a tone of command in a bid to hide his internal panic. “There’s eight of them, it’s a small operation. The tricky thing, as Ethan said, will be beaming out. Any thoughts? I’ll admit the physics is above my pay grade.”
