(USS Exeter –Sickbay – Nurse - CPO – Ewan McDonald - 1037)
His shift was not too bad. Work had been steady with no dramas which was nice. Theonly problem was that his mind was not on the task at hand, and he had beenthinking about past work. It was not disrupting his work, but things would joghis memory and it would wander off.
(Memory)
“Oi Ewan we have anotherone?”
Ewan looked up from his baconsand wedge and groaned. As the head of the anaesthetist pocked around the doorframe
~I have only just sat down~
“Like right now?”
He saw him look over hisshoulder.
“Yep coming through thedoors as we speak.”
“Bollocks.”
Ewan stood up and shovedthe rest of his sand wedge into his mouth as he hurried after the anaesthetist. He tried to not to choke on the bacon and bread as he tried to swallow it. He exitedthe small room that was used as a staff room and into the corridor. As hewatched the doors at the far end were slammed open as the trolly came crashingthrough at the horrendous rate being pushed by two porters and a third personwho he recognised as the surgeon almost running to keep up. She saw him andbegan to issue out instruction.
“Ewan get set up for a laparotomy. He has at least two in the stomach and one in the chest with a suspected pneumothorax. As well as right femur fracture and right tibia fracture.”
~What the hell~
“Is 2 open?”
“Yes 2 is clear no one is init.”
Ewan turned and headedtowards operating theatre 2 with his mind running.
~Okay laparotomy kit will covermost of it. I will need to grab bits from the fracture set and the put thechest drain stuff on stand by in case the pneumothorax is more complicated thenwe think~
He grabbed the instrumentsets off the shelves as he dashed past and barged the door open into theatre 2 openwith his should as he came in. The patient was on the operating table with the sterilisationframe above him and the anaesthetist beginning to administering anaesthesia medication. He placed the sets on a near by table and began to sort out what he would needand what was close to hand for emergencies.
“So what happen?” He askedas the surgeon began to get into her red scrubs.
“Some historical reenactor decidedthat it would be a good idea to actually have an authentic assault rifle. This persondecided that to make it more real, he would load actual live ammunition.”
“That dose not sound good.”Ewan had set up his instruments and was also hurriedly getting himself into aset of red scrubs.
“The main problem is thathis friend also had no idea and accidently off loaded a whole magazine into hisfriend.”
“Ow no.”
She nodded.
“Come Ewan lest see if wecan put this idiot back together again.”
(Present)
Ewan paused wondering whythat memory had surfaced. He frowned trying to work out what had triggered itbut could not work it out. The patient had survived although there had been afew close shaves during the operation but five hours later he had been wheeledinto recovery.
“Better get myself a tea.”
He began to cross sickbayto wards the replicator.
