Mission: Space was cool before it mattered

(USS Exeter –FO’s Office – FO Cmdr Alex Jones – 0812)



Alex sipped the dregs of the coffee on his desk, toying with the idea of
heading down to Bean me up to get a large to take out, but pushed the
thought aside, and instead poured himself a glass of orange juice. Sighing
deeply, he stood up, wishing the sun was over the yard arm as it seemed to
be a morning in need of ‘rum-assistance.’



If he were honest with himself, as in actuality he was pretty much trying
to be, he would be slowly coming to terms with a number of things. It had
been a month since he had asked Lieutenant Cortez out, and his plans had
been in place for a while now, but he’d put them off for a couple of
reasons, one of them being he wanted all the fallout from the Vandalosian
Mission all behind them. Secondly was a little more selfish, he had come to
enjoy his time on board, growing into his role as First Officer, and
therein lay the irony. In that time he and Erin had had regular, daily
almost, working lunches, and he’d found himself growing closer to her. The
fact of him being her direct superior bothered him, he worried that there
could be any semblance of inappropriate conduct, not for his career or
reputation, but for hers.



However, his growing personal feelings shunted aside, which surprisingly he
found he could keep the two apart, he found himself considering her career,
and it’s possibilities, she had shown herself to be an intelligent,
adaptable Officer, with certain notes and comments appearing in her file.
Draining the Orange Juice, and eyeing the bottom drawer that contained a
bottle or two for ‘medicinal or celebratory purposes’ and after pushing
those thoughts out of his mind, hit his commbadge.



“Jones to Cortez, please report to my office at a time of your convenience
between 0900 and 0930. Jones out.”
