Mission: Space was cool before it mattered

Day: 2

Stardate: 2446.04.25

(Exeter – Bridge - FO Cmdr Alex Jones - 1201)

Routine

Aside from a number of conversations earlier in the day, life once more
settled into the same monotonous routine. Tactical do we have anything?
Anything at all? Klingons on the starboard bow? Red alert all stations?”

Tactical shook their head disaprovingly “Sorry Sir.”

“Understood.” Alex said, sinking back into the centre chair, beginning to
wish that things would pick up and something exciting would happen. Life
threatening even. Trip’s voice came over the Comm channel suddenly, tearing
him away from the woolgathering.

“Understood Captain. Be right there. Jones out.” He closed the channel then
turned to the other Officers on the Bridge, seeking out the most junior
amongst them, eventually setting on a horribly young looking Bajoran Junior
Ensign who barely looked old enough to leave high school let alone hold a
commission. “Ms Zolkan. Bridge is yours, you have the Conn.” He stood up
and paused a step away from the ‘big chair’ Turning to her scared looking
face, winking playfully, “It’s just a chair.”

“What do I do?”

He paused. “First you know what all your subordinates know. Ask for a COC
Status report, don’t let them babble. Then turn to tactical for close range
traffic and Science for long range, quite often Science notices stuff from
afar.”

“Thank you Commander.” The Ensign sat down in the centre chair in a show of
reverence. Should she never sit there again, it would forever be a talk of
the table to her grandchildren, where she would tell the tale, with the
advantages of age.

Smiling warmly, Alex left the Bridge and entered the Ready Room.

Stepping into the room, without the whole ‘waiting at the door’ nonsense,
one of few who had that right, Alex reached the Captain’s desk, this time
somehow knowing that this wasn’t a normal ‘sit down and pour two drinks’
scenario.

“Skip?” He asked simply, a whole sentence distilled into one word.
