Part 1
Mission: Space was cool before it mattered
Day: 2
Stardate: 2446.04.26
(Exeter – Mess hall- MCO/3O Lt.Colonel Tyrek Na’Rel & SO Lieutenant T'Gema
Vaxis- 1440)
Tyrek had spent a good part of the day meeting one on one with the marines.
Feeling the need to stretch his legs a bit he took a walk around the ship,
eventually arriving in the main mess hall.
Upon entering he noticed a female officer in a blue uniform sitting at a
table by herself. The table in front of her was nearly completely covered
with an assortment of foods.
Typically Tyrek practiced the way of minding his own business, but he had
never seen this officer before , he noticed she had pointed ears.
~ Romulan? Perhaps she's the new science officer.~ He thought to himself.
" Problem? " She asked.
Tyrek didn't realize he had stared for so long.
" No, I was just wondering when your party was arriving. " Tyrek said and
pointed to the table full of food.
T'Gema looked at him with a look of confusion.
" My party , Sir?"
" You have several platters of food on your table. " Tyrek said.
T'Gema looked down at the table.
" Oh yeah." She chuckled.
" I'm sampling Terran snacks. So far nothing is appealing."
Tyrek nodded and stepped closer to the table and took a closer look at her
selections.
" Well I'm sure I know your issue."
T'Gema raised her brow at him.
" And what would that be ?"
" May I ?" He asked and motioned to a chair at the table.
" Please. " She gestured
Tyrek sat down.
" Well you're going for sweet. We Rihannsu naturally favor bitter. " He
picked up a chocolate chip cookie.
" A Terran would see this and find it perfectly acceptable. What are your
thoughts ? "
T'Gema looked at the cookie.
" Dull yet Rich."
" That's a rather conflicting assessment." Tyrek said.
" Well I am half Terran." She said with a twisted look on her face.
" You have my sympathies, Lieutenant." He said jokingly.
" No" She laughed. " It's not like that. " She said waving her hand.
" I don't know Sir, perhaps I'm just too accustomed to Rihan food."
Tyrek held up his finger.
" I'll be right back." He said and rushed away from the table and directed
a few civilians to clear T'Gema's table. Then dashed to the replicator.
T'Gema leaned away from the table as random people started clearing the
table.
" Ok…I guess personal space isn't valued here." She mumbled to herself.
Moments later Tyrek returned with a serving tray containing two small
baskets of food and a few containers of condiments.
" Here you go." He said and sat the tray on the table in front of her.
" What are these dishes?" She asked.
Tyrek pointed to the small baskets of food on the tray.
" Those are salt and vinegar potato chips or crisps depending on who you
talk to. " He mentioned, then pointed to the other basket.
" And those are called Fries…or chips depending on who you ask."
" Wait, so these are Chips and those are also chips?" She asked.
Tyrek shook his head in mutual confusion with her.
" The difference in the etymology depends on the continent, but for this
taste test, we will call those fries and those chips." He said pointing to
the selections.
T'Gema picked up a potato chip and placed it in her mouth. " That's…really
good !" She exclaimed and grabbed another. Her blue eyes lit up with
excitement.
" Now try one of those." Tyrek said, pointing to the fries.
She picked up a fry and ate it.
" Hmm."
" Verdict ? " He asked.
" These are good but I like chips better." She remarked.
" Now try this. " He said and picked up a small bottle of liquid and doused
the fries.
" This is vinegar. " He mentioned, then picked up another bottle with a red
substance in it, squirting it on the fries
" This is ketchup."
T'Gema reached and grabbed one , looking at it for a moment then ate it.
Her eyes grew large as she placed her fingers over her mouth.
" Now that is amazing."
" I know, but be cautious of Terran food, the better it tastes the worse it
is for you. " Tyrek laughed.
" Isn't that like all things Terran?" She asked.
" What do you mean?" Tyrek questioned.
" The more enjoyable they are, the bigger threat they pose." T'Gema said.
" You think they're insidious ? He asked.
" I'm sorry Sir. That was not appropriate." She said.
Tyrek sighed.
" They're good people, give them a chance. They may even surprise you
Lieutenant. "
T'Gema smiled slightly.
" I am trying Sir"
