Mission: Space was cool before it mattered

Day:2

Stardate: 2446.04.26

(USS Exeter – Personal Quarters – CTO - Lieutenant - Ire Williams - 0745)

He was about to head for the door. He was going to be late and being the Boss, it did not show a good example. His eyes strayed to the black box again sitting on the table where he had left it and crossed over to it. He picked it up and carefully opened it to look at the exquisite rings nestled inside. He looked from them to the small model of the Exeter sitting on a shelf beside a few other.

~Ow Ravok I miss you, you crazy Romulan ~

-Flash Back-

“No, you crazy Romulan the Refit sovereign class is nice and all , but it's nothing compared to this Akira class Science refit. You know the shuttle bay was reduced in size by 35 percent to make room for more complex science labs"

Ire smiled at his friend from across the table which was covered in bits of model starships as he waved a little model of an Akira class starship to make a point.

" One or two well placed photon torpedoes and you can kiss those pylons goodbye and then you'll wish you had that extra space back in the shuttlebay." Ravok scoffed back playfully.

Ire looked at the model in his hand and then shrugged.

“That might be so but it still looks cool.”

" This is good isn't it ? Just us guys putting our models together with no distractions. Keira is spending some time in the holodeck and Erin was nice enough to watch my kid." Ravok said.

“Yes it is. It’s nice to do something not work related for a bit.”

" Does Greta know what you're doing here ? Or are you still worried she will call your models nothing but toys?" Ravok laughed.

Ire paused for a moment.

“I may have mentioned that I have a couple of models for ship recognition purposes.”

" Recognition purposes? " Ravok asked rhetorically and laughed.

“What I am not going to tell her that I like to spend my time making small model starships. She will think I am five or something.” Ire said.

" Greta doesn't know about what you have in storage?" Ravok asked.

“I may have played down the extent of my collection.”

" If you ever show her the full collection, please make sure I'm there so I can see the look on her face." Ravok joked.

“How did Keira react when she found out?”

Ravok up his model of the Sovereign class to the light to see any of the imperfections.

" Actually, she said they were too precise to be toys and started mentioning the difference between the B'rel class and the K'Vort class. Come on…she's an engineer. I can show her a schematic and she would be entertained for hours. " Ravok smiled

Ire laughed

“Yes I can so see that.”

Ravok sat his model down and looked at Ire.

"You know he's really good at putting models together?"

“Who?”

" Trip." Ravok answered. " Although he prefers the no assembly required type of models. It's a real shame because he's probably one of the smartest people we know when it comes to figuring things out."

Ire looked over at Ravok as he put the Akira down.

“Really. I never would have thought that he would be into doing this.”

" Well technically he's not, he's just good at it." Ravok said.

He waved his arm indicating the table and picked up a Exelsior model

“You are right about being smart though. Dealing with us two lunatics since graduation. I am surprised that he’s not got more grey hairs due to stress.”

Ravok’s leg began to bounce slightly under the table.

" You know what? If it wasn't for us he wouldn't be where he is. After everything we did, after everything that happened…" Ravok stopped and clinched his fist. Taking a deep breath.

" Sorry, there's just so much still fresh in my mind. "

“I know Ravok its okay.”

" What I meant to say is you shouldn't sell yourself short of your accomplishments. You're the best damn pilot I know, you were in Nova squadron.  If it wasn't for us grey hairs would be the least of his worries. " Ravok said.

“We all achieved things out there that no one else could. We all know what we did. I have no regrets and neither should you. ”

" Between you and I , what really bothers me about all of this is how he used to be with us. He asked us to join his crew just to put up a wall between us and him. " Ravok shook his head.

" I'm just stressed and talking out of my @$$. Don't mind me."

“And that’s why we sit here and put together starship models so that we can talk $!%£ and get things off our chest.”

Ire smiled.

“Also he’s the skipper there has to be some distance or he would be accused as playing favourites but he is still the same old Trip we graduated with. The same Trip we flew patrols with. The same one who invited us to his wedding. The same one we got drunk with after those long boring patrols. That’s not changed. We are still a family. An odd one for sure but still a family.”

" You're right. I'm just under a lot of pressure right now,  Rayna hasn't slept well the past few nights. " Ravok mentioned.

“That’s understandable. Nothing like a bit of sleep deprivation to make other things feel worse.”

" I'm sorry , let's just get back to these models. As soon as we get these done we can start on the enterprise." Ravok said with a smile.

“Yes but which one is the question?” He smiled back. “There are quite a few of them.”

" All of them." Ravok quipped.

“We could go classic and start with the original.” He indicated the Constitution model components. “ or we could do something more up to date?” Ire asked.

" The classics are always the best."

“That’s true and you already have a sovereign model at the moment.” Ire said.

Ravok rubbed his chin in thought.

" NCC 1071…the original, let's make it a big one. "

Ire smiled. “Yes we can do that.”

Ravok walked over and  placed his model on an empty spot on the shelf.

He looked back to Ire.

" Have you ever heard the rumor that the original enterprise, the one they have on display is actually a fake and the real one was stolen many years ago?"

“No really. That can’t be true. I am sure they would have told someone.”

Ravok sat back down.

" Yeah the original was stolen somewhere between the Dominion war and the Civil war, apparently and the Federation council decided to place a fake in its place. The rumor states that the Federation was so embarrassed by its loss that instead of admitting the truth they decided to lie to everyone. But who knows , some people even say that DS9 is a fake as well. I think it's safe to assume that people love rumors." Ravok laughed.

“Ow yes rumours people do and some of them are way off the deep end.”

" Come on, finish that model so we can start…" Ravok said.

-End of flashback-

Ire stood there lost in thought looking at the Enterprise on the shelf. He gave a sad smile and took a deep breath.

“Okay Ravok. Sleep easy.”

He turned and headed out of his quarters towards his office.
