(Exeter – Personal Quarters - Lieutenant Ire Williams/ Lieutenant (jg) Greta Smith - 0132)

The scream continued as his nightmare blink away and reality was left in its place. He paused for a moment as he realised that he was in the real world and not in his dream before he looked over at Greta and realised that the scream had come from her. He pushed the remnants of his recurring nightmare and spoke to her.

“Greta, it's okay you are safe.”

Sitting up suddenly,  bolt upright, Greta realised that the sound that she had heard was her. Forcing her eyes open, she knew she was trembling and couldn't help it.

"Ire… oh I… did I wake you?"

“It's okay. I was going to wake up soon anyway.” Knowing that the nightmare would conclude in its normal fashion. He looked at her with concern.

“More importantly are you okay?”

She closed her eyes for a moment and then gently shook her head. "It's happened before… since the vulcan but not since Starfleet Medical. I… Ire,  I'm sorry." She replied, pulling the duvet around her a little and not looking at him.

He gently rolled her over so that he was looking into her eyes.

“You don’t have to apologise. Not to me. You were there for me after Wolf and I will be here for you.”

She sighed, "It's… just the things he showed me… the things I saw… most of the time I know they're not real but sometimes…"

Ire nodded. “I can understand that.”

She curled into him, taking comfort in the warmth of the man she loved. "I just… when I'm asleep, it's hard to shake them."

He wrapped his arms around her.

“That makes sense.”

Sighing, "I remember you, the nights they shook you after… you dealt with them so well and me…"

“I could not have done it without you. I would have never got back into a cockpit if you had not been there let alone still be in starfleet. Just knowing that you were there keeping me safe as I worked it all out in my head made all the difference.”

Smiling softly, Greta looked at him, "You don’t mind… if it takes time."

He gave her a gentle smile. “It will take time. Nothing is a quick fix but I will be there for you as you were for me.”

"Even if I wake you every night and not in a good way?"

“Of course.”

Sighing heavily, Greta closed her eyes as she lay her head on his shoulder, "Ire… I’m scared sometimes. It's been a good while since it happened and I haven't been back to the bar.."

“Of course you are. no sane person would not be. You will get back there eventually but don’t rush it if you don’t want to.”

"It's not that I don’t want to… it's more of… I'm scared. I know I have to at some point. Can't avoid it forever."

“We have time. There are other places on the ship that we can go to. We will go when you are ready.”

"We? You'll come with me?"

“Of course I will go wherever and whenever you want.”

"Right now I would settle for sleep. Curled up with you."

“That sounds like a good plan. We definitely do that.”

Greta closed her eyes, and, as she began to fall back asleep, mumbled, "Don’t leave me…"

“I will never leave you.” He smiled at her as she drifted to sleep. He waited for a bit knowing what he would be returning to when he fell asleep but he knew that he needed his sleep as much as she did.

“Love you. Sleep well.”

He closed his eyes and drifted back to more troubled times.
