(Runabout Muskogee - Tactical Ensign jg Jori - 0448)
Fully dressed and equipped with a tactical vest and now a respirator, Jori stood at the hatch, ready to begin their rescue mission. She wanted to be, and hoped to be, the first person from Starfleet to walk on this new and unknown world. Even if nothing significant came of it, it would be something she did. When Lieutenant Commander Shara chose her, a smile and exuberance clearly came out, though she quickly returned to a professional bearing.
"You got this, Ensign," said Shara.
"Yes, sir." Jori was as ready as she was going to be.
Shara pressed the release and the hatch began to lower. Jori could already feel the wind and warm air from the planet. When the ramp was ready, she put on a pair of sunglasses, and moved to its edge, where she stopped.
Jori wondered if she should say something, though she felt kind of silly considering it. Throughout the history of the exploration of space, innumerable planets had been discovered or had a first step. Why should this one be special?
Because it was her first away mission and her special moment.
Knowing she had to get moving, she said the first thing that came to her mind.
"To infinity and beyond!"
Her voice was slightly muffled by the respirator, so she didn't know if the others heard. Shrugging, she activated her tricorder and stepped onto the planet.
The reddish surface was generally flat, with slight undulations. It was barren and rocky, with small patches of scrub vegetation strewn about. There were clouds in the yellow-orange sky, but they weren't like any she had seen. The yellow sun was low, but still gave enough light to see. There was an odor she could smell through the respirator that reminded her of a burning wire. It was arid, but not uncomfortable.
While the others disembarked, Jori stood watch, her eyes constantly moving. Once everyone was ready, she did a tricorder scan. When finished, she addressed Shara.
"Sir, the downed vessel is 1.9 kilometers in that direction." Jori pointed northward. "Readings indicate patches of toxic substances spread across the landscape, but from this distance, I can't tell what it could be. We need to be cautious."
This was Jori's first report on her first assignment off the ship. She felt she did well, but there was still some doubt if she could have presented something more.
She really had to stop over-thinking things.
