(Runabout Muskogee - Tactical Ensign jg Jori - 0442)

"So, which one of us is going to be the first member of Starfleet to set foot on this planet?" said Winters.

Because of her curious and adventurous nature, Jori wanted to blurt out her desire to be the first. Exercising restraint, she kept silent, reasoning that their team leader should be that person. Lieutenant Commander Shara had a proven record of service, while Jori was new and inexperienced. If someday this planet ended up being special or historic, Shara's name should be the one attached to that.

The descent to the surface was a blur in Jori's mind. She had done her duty and diligence at the tactical station, but she was continually refocusing her thoughts as flashes of being marooned in her Quella trial kept coming to the fore. She and Lieutenant Ire Williams never went through the full experience, so she was puzzled about why that was occurring. Maybe it was because so much had happened to her over the last two days, it was preoccupying and overwhelming her inner thoughts. Yes, that must be it.

While waiting for the disembarking order to be determined, Jori recalled a particular training mission her third year at the academy. It was a survival task, but instead of taking place in a holo simulation, it was in a small teaching facility on the moon orbiting Earth. The scenario was a science team studying ancient ruins discovered on the moon of a fictional planet. Jori's role was that of chief of security, leading a group of ten. One of the archaeological teams was stranded outside after their rover broke down. There was static in the comm traffic, so little else was known. It was Jori's responsibility to lead the rescue.

At first, this seemed quite simple, almost pointless, but instructors had repeatedly taught to never make assumptions. Always be prepared and ready for the unexpected. In retrospect, the interference in communicating with the scientists, should have alerted her.

Jori led the group, taking the last two rovers, several others from security, and two from medical. In full EVA, they headed out.

EVA suits! That brought Jori back to the present. The planet they were on now was barely class M. On the way down, readings indicating possible risks in the air, had been detected. This was a concern.

"I have questions," said Jori. "Because of the atmosphere here, is their any risk to our safety? Will we be all right breathing? Should we wear EVA suits or at the very least, respirators? Is there a threat to exposed skin?"

Jori addressed Shara, but her gaze moved to Doctor Kruze.

"I just want to make sure."

(reply Kruze, Shara, Winters)
