(Black Sight Facility– Interrogation Room – Inmate 1982– 1305)

Her hands were manacled andsecured to the table. She looked up as a man entered the room.

“Inmate 1982 I am LieutenantCommander McGuinness. I am here to ask you some questions.”

“Not again.”

She saw his hand touch a icon on the console asa stab of pain as lanced up through her manacled hands and into her body. Herbody twitched uncontrollable for a few seconds until she regained control ofher body. She took a few deep breaths to steady herself before she looked atMcGuinness.

“You quite finished?”

She glared at him.

“Yes sir. Of course, Sir.”

“Good.”

She watched as he took out aPADD and placed it on the table in front of him.

“So from our records you workedat the R&D centre on the Wallace space station?”

“Along with a lot ofothers.”

His finger twitched to hoverabove the icon and she glared at him but nodded.

“Tell me about Project SacredShift.”

“I have told the other peoplewho was her before all about it.”

“That maybe so but I want toknow.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Why was a NeurogenicInterface used rather than a Neural interface?”

She paused for a momentthinking back to the time that she had been given the project. A time of herlife that she had tried to forget.

“Control.”

She said simply.

“What?”

“I said it was aboutcontrol.”

She saw him frown and sighedinwardly.

~Do these idiots not readany of the other interrogations~

“The project was designed torun a Prometheus or Indefatigable class starship using only one crewmember…”

Starfleet had, had a largesurplus of hulls but not enough qualified crewmembers at the time.

“….it was found that using aneural interface did not provide a strong enough connection with the shipscomputer that we had wanted during high stress scenarios. Which meant that wehad an unacceptable failure rate.”

“What caused this failurerate.”

“Disconnection in the faceof mortal threat.”

He gave her a quizzicallook.

“You mean that people wereabandoning ship.”

“Yes.”

“And that was a problem?”

“Yes.”

He frowned at that answer.

“So why use a neuralinterface?”

“The interface of thecrewman with the ship is more complete as they almost become one entity. Thisincreases computing time as well as reaction time.”

“Even when the ships were inmulti vector assault mode?”

“Yes, there was a slight degradationbut not enough to cause any significant complications.”

“How far had the projectgone before you left.”

“We had gotten into phase two.We had obtained fifteen candidates as part of phase one and out of those only ninewere viable for the next phase. We had tried compatibility with differentclasses of ships and it was found that Prometheus or Indefatigable class werethe best compatible as well as the most promising tactical choice.”

“So it never went into fullproduction?”

“I don’t know about what ishappening now but at the time that I left we have two prototype Indefatigableships and four Prometheus ships.”

A buzzer sounded as McGuinesswas about to speak. She watched him as he got up, took his PADD and began tohead towards the door.

“Hay where is my part. You wantedinformation and I would get something in return.”

She watched as he paused atthe door, tapped a command on his PADD and through it onto the table. Shepicked it up and looked at the image on it.

“Hope you enjoy that. It’s thelast time you will see it.”

She frowned.

“What do you mean.”

“His ship has disappeared.”

~What has happened~

“What do you mean disappeared. What’s happened?”

“Tell me what I want to knowand I will tell you more.”

He grinned smugly as the doorto the interrogation room closed.
